1 The Monthly Newsletter of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church The Epistle Welcome The Rev. A. Michael Singer, Interim Rector! Dear Friends: What a pleasure it is to be with you! In this article I would like to introduce myself to you. I share my life with my best friend and wife Teresa. Teresa is a Music Specialist for Pender County Schools at Malpass Corner and Rocky Point Elementary Schools. We just celebrated our 39 th wedding anniversary. We are the parents of our daughter, Rachel. This past May, I was blessed to be able to walk Rachel down the aisle and to marry her to her husband, Michael at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Kinston. Rachel is a Dig- ital Learning Specialist at Northwest Elementary School in Kinston, NC. Rachel and Michael live in Pink Hill, NC. Teresa will continue to live in our home in Leland, NC, and join me at my apartment in Beau- fort as time permits. It is my plan, at this time, to go home to Leland for a couple of days every week or two. I came to the Diocese of East Carolina in 1999 as the Rector of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Kinston, NC. A few years ago I felt a call to do a different style of ministry prior to my retirement. After two years of training, through the Interim Ministry Network, I made the decision in the Spring of 2016 to leave St. Mary’s and accept my first interim position at Church of the Servant in Wilmington, NC. I believe that ministry is relational. It starts with the relationship we have first with God in Christ and extends to all of humanity, as well as all of creation. It is in relationship that we live our faith out in the world. Faith is always personal, but for a Christian it can never be private. We are called to share the love of God with those in our families and communities. The early church was known as “The Way” and those that followed Jesus were called “People of the Way.” Christianity wasn’t just a set of beliefs; it was a way of life lived out purposefully and intentionally. Those that followed Jesus lived a very different life than the surrounding culture. It is because of this relational orientation that I will spend the next couple months just getting to know who you are, who St. Paul’s believes itself to be as a community of faith, and to develop relationships and understandings about this place and its people. We are already connect- ed in our relationship with Christ; we are not strangers but rather brothers and sisters in Christ. Interim Ministry is a unique ministry that looks at ways to help a church identify its core values and de- velop a vision from them. Everything a church does, every decision a parish makes, should be grounded in and point to the core values of that parish. Interim times are often times of anxiety for a parish, and part of the job of an interim is to manage that anxiety and direct it into healthy and creative opportunities. My job as your interim is to help you find ways to strengthen the grace-filled life and ministry of St. Paul’s. I love what I do and I hope that comes through in everything I do every day. I look forward to our work together. Faithfully, Michael + The Rev. A. Michael Singer Interim Rector - St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Beaufort, NC

The Monthly Newsletter of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church The Epistle

Welcome The Rev. A. Michael Singer, Interim Rector!

Dear Friends:

What a pleasure it is to be with you! In this article I would like to introduce myself to you. I share my life with my best friend and wife Teresa. Teresa is a Music Specialist for Pender County Schools at Malpass Corner and Rocky Point Elementary Schools. We just celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary. We are the parents of our daughter, Rachel. This past May, I was blessed to be able to walk Rachel down the aisle and to marry her to her husband, Michael at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Kinston. Rachel is a Dig-ital Learning Specialist at Northwest Elementary School in Kinston, NC. Rachel and Michael live in Pink Hill, NC. Teresa will continue to live in our home in Leland, NC, and join me at my apartment in Beau-fort as time permits.

We are already connect-ed in our relationship with Christ; we are not strangers but rather brothers and sisters in Christ.

Interim Ministry is a unique ministry that looks at ways to help a church identify its core values and de-velop a vision from them.

MEALS ON WHEELS of Beaufort is our Outreach for September and operates under the Beaufort Fellowship of Churches. This is a service which delivers not only a balanced meal but also a friendly smile and contact for homebound folks. We are currently serving 13 persons. Good, balanced meals plus a carton of milk and fruit or dessert are prepared by Harborview Rehab in Morehead City. The meals are picked up between 10:45 am and 11:00 am and then delivered Monday through Saturday by VOLUNTEERS from St Paul’s Church, Ann St UMC, First Baptist Church, Beaufort Ole Town Rotary and One Harbor Church. MOWS pays Harborview $4.50 per meal. Some recipients want meals daily and some want meals three times per week. Some recipients reimburse us for their meals and some cannot pay which costs MOWS about $500 monthly. All donations are used to pay for meals and are greatly

appreciated. We also need more VOLUNTEERS to deliver meals. Volunteers usually deliver one day per week for a month duration. It takes about an hour and a half to deliver meals on a given day and really does make you feel good to have given of yourself. Ask Dave DuBuisson - he delivers EVERY TUESDAY unless he’s away. To inquire about volunteering, please call me Sandra Howarth 241-4292. THANKS!!

“An Evening for Broad Street Clinic” An evening for Broad Street Clinic presents “A Tribute to the Ladies of Song” including such greats as Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and more, featuring the beautiful voice of singer/songwriter Jeanne Jolly at Joslyn Hall, Carteret Community College, September 9, 2017. There will be two shows: 6:00-8:00 and 8:30-10:30. Tickets are $50.00 per person and include light appetizers, desserts and beer/wine. See the poster in the parish hall for more details.

Five Loaves mission meets every Monday at First Baptist Church. We can use volunteers from 5-7:30pm and servers from 6-6:45pm. It is an ecumenical outreach between St. Paul’s and First Baptist Church’s members serving a hot supper to anyone needing a meal and fellowship. Contact Nancy Ustach, 252-728-6811.

ECW Fall Social-Sunday, September 24th

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the ECW Fall Kick-off Social! This has become a favorite event that is purely “social” (with a little business thrown in!) as ECW starts a new year. Sarah Jo Safrit has again graciously invited us to her home on Sunday afternoon at 3 PM on September 24th. Refreshments will be served and this is a great opportunity to meet, greet and visit. We especially would like to invite all women who have recently joined St. Paul’s. The Safrit’s address is 1428 Hwy. 101 in Beaufort. If you need a ride or more information, please call Allison DuBuisson at 723-2104. Plan to join us and bring a friend. See you there.

Church Periodical Club Information

The Church Periodical Club or CPC began in 1888 when a small group of Episcopal women in NY started sending bundles of church periodicals, Bibles, and prayer books to missionaries in the western part of the U.S. Today the commitment to supplying free theological and educational materials in support of missions around the world still continues as an independent affiliated organization of the Episcopal Church. CPC depends entirely on voluntary contributions to carry out this unique ministry of projects in juvenile facilities, hospitals, libraries, schools, prisons, seminaries, drug/alcohol rehab centers and seafarer’s institutes to name a few. In our diocese we have also awarded grants to seminarians for educational assistance. At St Paul’s and in our diocese, CPC is an ECW project. This year our collection Sunday will be September 24 in honor of Patti Dill, a former CPC Coordinator for St Paul’s as well as for the East Carolina Diocese. Patti’s birthday is September 25. Also, our own ECW has made a donation to the diocesan C PC in Patti’s memory. Special envelopes will be available during both services on Sept 24 for your donation to this important ministry. Checks should be made to St Paul’s ECW – CPC fund. Please get involved by giving the gift that gives VOLUMES as we continue to support ‘ CPC – changing the world one book at a time.’ Thank you, Ginny Poindexter, CPC Coordinator

The Bazaar is Coming – Saturday, November 11, 2017 Fall has arrived and now it is time to be thinking about the bazaar. It is time for canning and freezing all the wonderful things from the garden. Be thinking of how you can help. We hope everyone will be involved! So be praying on how you can contribute this year to the Harvest Bazaar which will be Saturday November 11th this year! To learn more or how to help, contact Sylvia Wheatly at 252-422-5756, [email protected] or Lynne Eastman at 252-241-7857.

ECW Gathering at Trinity Center What an inspiring morning we had at the ECW Gathering at Trinity Center last week, joining women from other church’s in the Diocese of East Carolina. Those attending from St. Paul were Jenny Jeffries, Shelvey Lloyd, Sylvia Wheatly, Barb Ackermann, Pat Schaaf, Tricia Phillips, Mary Duane Hale, and Allison DuBuisson. Author and photographer Jeff Jenkins shared his reflections of finding God in ordinary places, teaching simple life lessons from the lens of his camera. We joined in Holy Eucharist, which is especially moving at Trinity Center, and a lovely lunch.

More News and Notes

The Bazaar is Coming – Saturday, November 11, 2017 The Annual Fall Harvest Bazaar co-chairs Sylvia Wheatly and Lynne Eastman have held several meetings and have fine-tuned many details. See Bazaar updates in this Epistle. The Fall Harvest Bazaar will be here before we know it. Mark your calendar for Saturday November 11.

How can you help? Here are a few ideas: ***For the Luncheon, Margaret Brock and Judy Mercer will need contributions of ingredients and dollars, as well as volunteers to prepare some simple dishes at home. Recipes will be provided. Keep an eye on the sign-up space next to the kitchen door in the parish hall.

***For the Frozen Foods room, Brenda Chadwick, Norma Gardner, and their committee will need LOTS of frozen entrees, soups, quiches, stews and such. Start filling your freezer now! Labels and some food containers will be available soon.

***This year we want a big push for the Baked Goods section. Pies, cakes, cookies and brownies go fast in this room, and we need contributions from anyone with an oven! Ann Carter and Len Gilstrap will take your delicious donations.

***The Country Store will need jellies, jams, relishes and pickles. Contact Missy Bailey for more information.

***The RAFFLE will need donations of gift items, gift certificates, and exciting donations for the Silent Auction. Do you have a talent you could share? How about providing a lesson, or preparing a special meal for the highest bidder? Let Barbara Ackermann or Michelle Laughridge know what you can contribute. Barbara and Michelle will also need volunteers to help solicit and collect donations.

***How about that priceless (or just treasured) antique that you never use? Call Doris McMullan and donate it to the Unique Treasures room. Furniture, art, lamps, linens, and decorative items will be needed.

***Start filling boxes! Rosemary Green will oversee the Kitchen Room, and will need donations of cooking equipment, dishes, cookbooks and serving pieces. What’s not being used in your kitchen and dining room?

***The Craft, Jewelry & Christmas Room will need Christmas decorations in good condition, and lots of jewelry. Can you make some Christmas crafts? Anna DeButts and Eva Higgins will be happy to have them for this charming room.

***Plan to bring gently used household items, toys, and sports equipment, for the Second Go Round section of the bazaar. Peggy Stallworth and Susan Schmidt will oversee this popular event this year. Smaller donations should be brought in during the week preceding the bazaar on November 11.

READY SET GO!

The church office will be closed Monday, September 4, in observance of the Labor Day Holiday

Supporting Voices

I cannot believe a new school year is beginning already. All of a sudden everything starts - soccer, football, band, school, Sunday School, Crosswinds! The first night for Crosswinds will be Sunday September 10 at 5:30. We will meet at the church. (Possibly in the new youth room!) The past few years we have had the parents come on the first night. I don't think that will be necessary this year. I will send home any necessary paperwork and you can chat with me at church about any concerns or ideas you have the for youth this year. I am thinking through some changes for this year and will be getting more information out about that soon. This will be an interesting year for our church as we define who we are and what we want to be and search for a new priest. I am praying that this will be a year where we will come together as a church family on a more regular basis on Sunday mornings for worship and Sunday school. Sunday School is a vital part of the church for youth and adults. It is a time to get to know each other and deepen our knowledge and understanding of what it means to be a Christian. I will be teaching the middle and high school Sunday school class with Sylvia Wheatly. I am praying that the classroom will be full of your kids and their friends. While in the Seattle area this summer, we attended church with Katie's brother. The pastor gave a sermon on family life and imparting spiritual wisdom to our children. A key part of his message was to "recruit supporting voices." While our voice as parents is perhaps the most important voice in the lives of our kids, it is certainly not the only voice. Our kids are bombarded by outside forces and voices. As I parent, I want to recruit voices for my kids to hear that support the values and messages I tell them at home. It is too easy for our voice as parents to be drowned out by competing voices in the lives of our children. I am thankful for the supporting voices Sunday School teachers have offered to my children. As our three girls become teenagers, I am going to encourage them to be near as many supporting voices as I can. I am praying that Katie and I can be supporting voices for your children at Crosswinds events. I am praying that Sylvia and I can be supporting voices for your children in Sunday School. The verses below from Deuteronomy open up with "Hear, O Israel.." Moses is telling the whole nation that they will be involved in imparting spiritual wisdom to the next generation. We can't do it alone as parents we need to recruit supporting voices and we need to be supporting voices for the next generation. Thank you, Frank Sherman

Deuteronomy 6:4-9New International Version (NIV) 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
