My dear Parishioners,

Many years ago, as a younger person, I was often amused

listening to some of our older religious talking about their

doctors. In those days, I had one doctor whom I visited

when it was absolutely necessary and that, thanks be to God,

was a rare occasion. But life changes as we grow older and

experience the consequences of ageing. And so, I have

joined that vast multitude of human beings who speak of

their doctors. As many of you are aware, in recent years, I

have experienced a number of ailments and have had to rely

on the services of medical specialists, mostly doctors but

also some excellent nurse practitioners, therapists, and tech-

nicians. What an eye opener! I never cease to be amazed by

the competence of these dedicated people and the technolo-

gy they utilize in their work. I can only be grateful that I

have been the beneficiary of such a wealth of dedicated tal-

ent. Of course, I am fortunate enough and grateful to have

health insurance. But I am bothered by the thought that so

many in this country don’t have health insurance, and that

so many who do have it are in danger of losing it because of

the insane bungling we have been witnessing among the

political leaders of our country.

This past May, in speaking to a group of doctors , Pope

Francis said that health is not a consumer good but a univer-

sal right. If this is true, then health care can’t be treated

simply as a business. As in so many other instances in this

country, money guides the politics of health care. Thus, the

patient becomes the customer. We have to work hard and

pray intensely that the stony hearts of so many political and

business leaders may come to resemble more closely the

warm hearts that beat in so many clinics, hospitals, and nurs-

ing homes across this country.

—Fr. Jerome, C.P.

17º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Queridos Hermanos,
