The goal of Burke’s intensive inpatient rehabilitation programs is to maximize your recovery. Whether you have had a stroke, brain or spinal cord injury, a neurological condition, a joint replacement, pulmonary or cardiac disease, or amputation, our expert rehabilitation teams are committed to helping you return to an active lifestyle.

OUR INTENSIVE THERAPY PROVIDES A MINIMUM OF THREE HOURS OF PHYSICAL, OCCUPATIONAL AND SPEECH THERAPY PER DAY—COMPARED TO SUB-ACUTE REHABILITATION FACILITIES THAT PROVIDE ABOUT ONE HOUR OF THERAPY PER DAY.

Burke follows the program model, which ensures the greatest possible level of recovery. At Burke, your therapy program will be custom-tailored to meet your specific needs by integrating several different disciplines including physical, occupational, respiratory and speech therapy; nursing; case management; and specialty medical services as needed, including an assessment by a neuropsychologist when appropriate. There is never a “one size fits all” approach at Burke.

BURKE’S ACUTE REHAB: PERSONALIZED FOR MAXIMUM RECOVERY

THE BURKE TEAM

Burke’s doctors, nurses and therapists provide state-of-the-art treatment and our personalized care is the result of expert, interdisciplinary teams. These are led by a remarkable range of highly respected medical specialists. Burke’s full-time physicians include neurologists, physiatrists, internists, rheumatologists and pulmonologists. There is a physician on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

We are part of the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System and have been academically affiliated with the Weill Cornell Medical College since 1968.

These remarkable resources explain Burke’s enduring national reputation for excellence. Our success in helping patients achieve the fullest possible recovery from illness or injury is renowned coast-to-coast.

WE WELCOME INQUIRIES AND REFERRALS FROM PROSPECTIVE PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES, PHYSICIANS, CASE MANAGERS AND OTHER HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS.

Every referral to Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is given individual attention. Burke’s Screening and Admitting departments will assist you and your family throughout the admission process.

Once we receive a referral, Burke’s screening nurses review the patient’s medical information with a Burke physician and verify insurance coverage. When an admission has been approved by Burke and your insurance company, our Screening and Admitting departments will assist you in completing the appropriate paperwork for admission.

For more information, please call (888) 99-BURKE or (914) 597-2519 to speak with a Burke registered nurse.

REFERRALS & ADMISSIONS A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

Year after year, patients continue to give us high marks for staff courtesy and overall care. An independent survey conducted by Press Ganey, a firm that is a recognized leader in healthcare performance improvement, found that on average, about 95 percent of Burke patients would recommend Burke Rehabilitation Hospital to others.

Almost two-thirds of Burke nurses are Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses, which indicates a specialized level of nursing education and experience caring for the patient undergoing physical rehabilitation. Burke nurses are also nationally recognized for excellence, winning the 2011 NDNQI Award for Nursing Quality by the American Nursing Association.

With our renowned doctors and award-winning staff providing unparalleled treatment, you can be assured you will receive the best care at Burke.

AMPUTEE REHABILITATION PROGRAM

BRAIN INJURY REHABILITATION PROGRAM

Burke’s Amputee Rehabilitation Program is designed to promote healing, restore confidence and provide you with the skills to return home and live as independently as possible after an amputation. It is a two-phase program that begins immediately following surgery. In the first phase, therapy will focus on pain control, healing, emotional support and preparing the limb for prosthesis. A specialist who designs, creates and fits various types of artificial limbs, will work with you to create a custom fit. The second phase begins once your prosthesis has been completed. You will return to Burke for intensive physical and occupational therapy to ensure maximum mobility and independence in your daily life.

Burke’s intensive Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program aims to return you to the most active and productive lifestyle possible, following a traumatic or acquired brain injury. We serve patients with diagnoses such as brain tumor, meningitis, skull fracture, cerebral contusion, encephalitis, intra-cerebral or subarachnoid hemorrhage, and brain abscess. In addition to intensive therapy, you will receive education from each discipline to maximize recovery from the physical, cognitive and psychological impairments caused by brain injury and help prepare you for the next stage in the rehabilitation process.

A series of educational lectures and discussions for families and caregivers related to brain injury is provided by team members weekly.

“I wanted the best rehab after my surgery and I’ve received it. Burke helped me regain my confidence. Burke

provided me the rehab therapy I needed to succeed.” Ray Calore

“When I got to Burke, I couldn’t do anything. I had to re-learn to walk, speak and swallow. The therapists at Burke

were positive and had a lot of integrity. They were very honest with me in that the healing would take time but

assured me that I would get better.” Sondra DeMichele

NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM

Burke’s Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program is divided into two parts: the cardiac program and the pulmonary program. The cardiac program is tailored to meet the needs of patients recovering from a cardiac event such as a valve replacement, bypass surgery or abdominal aortic aneurism repair. When appropriate, after inpatient therapy, you can utilize the Burke Outpatient Cardiac Rehab Program.

The pulmonary program serves patients with diagnoses such as COPD (emphysema, bronchitis), bronchiectasis, chronic and acute respiratory failure, and pulmonary fibrosis (or those who have suffered an acute lung condition). You will receive intensive therapy five to six days a week and will be taught strategies to help you manage your condition.

Burke’s Neurological Rehabilitation Program serves adolescent through elderly patients, with diagnoses such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Guillian-Barre syndrome, myasthenia gravis and peripheral nervous system disease. Using state-of-the-art equipment such as the RTI FES Bike, Bioness, WalkAide, Litegait and SAEBO, the medical specialists, nursing staff and other rehabilitation therapists will ensure your therapy results in the highest possible outcome.

Educational lectures and discussions for your family or caregiver on various topics related to neurological conditions are conducted by team members weekly.
