  • Welcome to 9th Grade at

Felix Varela Senior High “Home of the Vipers”

    Ms.Suarez Language Arts

    2011-2012

  • Tardy Policy •  For first block (periods 1 and 2) only, each

student has one 1 free unexcused tardy per 9 weeks.

    •  For the second and all subsequent tardies, an administrative detention is issued.

    •  Student gets PINK copy. •  Detentions are served the next school day. •  Detentions not served result in 1-2 days of SCSI. •  After 3 unexcused tardies, teacher writes a

referral to the administration and SCSI is assigned.

  • Uniform Policy

    •  First violation is a warning. •  First block teacher issues administrative

detention served next school day. • Detentions are Monday-Thursday from

2:30-3:30. •  Student receives PINK copy of referral. • Once 3 detentions have been issued,

referral for SCSI is written by teacher.

  • What is the uniform? Colors Clothing

Green Shorts to knees Black Jeans in blue or black Grey Khaki pants

Jackets must be in school colors with no other logos printed on them.

    NO JEGGINGS!

  • Ms. Suarez’s Rules and Procedures

Classroom Procedures All students are required to adhere to the general rules of conduct as set down by the

school administration and Student Handbook. READ IT!!! Ignorance is not bliss! Standard classroom rules include the following:

The student will: •  be in the classroom when the bell rings. First tardy is free; after that, consequences outlined by the administration will be followed. •  present a pass for any and all tardies to class. This includes returning from lunch. If

you do not have a pass, the tardy will be considered unexcused. Your conduct grade is lowered after every 3rd.

    •  not have ANY electronic devices visible or in use. Administrative procedures will be followed!

    •  NOT stay in another teacher’s classroom without my permission. •  not leave your seat without permission. Raise your hand. •  not abuse bathroom privileges. •  not disrespect any one for any reason. It will not be tolerated! •  follow the dress code. •  remember that the teacher, not the bell, dismisses class.

  • Academic Requirements •  You will always have required materials.

    –  Notebook dividers: Notes, Literary Analysis, Vocabulary, Writing, OBRs/Journal •  All assignments must be done in a timely manner. •  For any work that is turned in, use only 81/2 X 11-inch white non-spiral

paper and blue or black ink. •  Put heading in top right-hand corner. Title ALL work and use formal

language. •  When typing, use 12-point font in Arial or Times Roman, and do not use all

caps. •  Top grade is content (what you say and how you say it); bottom grade is

mechanics (spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc.). •  If you receive a grade (s) (essays only) with which you are not pleased, you

may rewrite it and turn it in the VERY NEXT CLASS for a re-grade. This can be done as many times necessary to obtain a satisfactory grade.

    •  TBA-You will also be REQUIRED to do Reading Plus as part of your class grade. If you have issues with accessing the Internet to do this vital assignment, please speak to me ASAP.

  • Make-up Work If you are absent for any reason, it is your responsibility to get and

make up whatever work you missed. If your absence (s) is/are excused, you have as many days as you were absent to make up the work. New.schoolnotes.com is updated regularly. You may NOT make up work without an excused admit. Should you have the need to make up a test, you need to make arrangements.

Evaluation Procedures Class grades are not limited to tests and papers. Much emphasis is

placed on alternative assessment and differentiated instruction. Some aspects of this type of performance-based assessment include participating in class discussions and demonstrations, completing written or oral responses, conferencing with teacher and colleagues, engaging in important projects, and actively participating in group scenarios. I encourage students to look at the processes through which they gather information, and come to a final conclusion or product. The final product is important, but the journey is equally as valuable.

  • Your attitude, degree of cooperation, and general behavior determine conduct. It is imperative that a classroom remain conducive to learning at all times; therefore, be warned that I will NOT tolerate misconduct. I will call home. Really, I’m not kidding.

Parents, much time and energy have been spent to ensure that your child will receive a quality education here at FVSH.
