Welcome to Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 1, 2021 ~ Our Mission Statement ~ We, the Roman Catholic Parish of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, joyfully worship together to give praise, honor and glory to Almighty God. We are called by the Holy Spirit to proclaim and to live the gospel message through the sacraments and to spread the message of Jesus Christ by living out the example of God’s power in our lives. Please note that there is not a 6:30am Mass this week. Thank you for your understanding. Adoration will be on Friday, August 6, after the 8:00am Mass until 4:00pm. THE BREAD OF LIFE Today’s Gospel has the crowd asking Jesus three ques- tions. First, “When did you get here,” to which Jesus responds by rebuking them for their failure to grasp his miracle as a “sign,” an occasion to put faith in him. Their second question about accomplishing the “works of God” has Jesus respond that faith is the “work” that God wishes. Many scholars believe this is John’s answer to the faith-works dichotomy emerging in the early Chris- tian community. Faith is the work of God in the believer, John would have us understand. The third question asked by the crowd is a request for a “sign” that would allow them to put faith in Jesus, as the manna in the desert al- lowed the Israelites to put faith in the Lord God. Jesus answers by revealing himself as the “bread of life” that “comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

~ Our Mission Statement ~

We, the Roman Catholic Parish of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, joyfully worship together to give praise, honor and glory to Almighty God.

THE BREAD OF LIFE Today’s Gospel has the crowd asking Jesus three ques-tions. First, “When did you get here,” to which Jesus responds by rebuking them for their failure to grasp his miracle as a “sign,” an occasion to put faith in him. Their second question about accomplishing the “works of God” has Jesus respond that faith is the “work” that God wishes. Many scholars believe this is John’s answer to the faith-works dichotomy emerging in the early Chris-tian community. Faith is the work of God in the believer, John would have us understand. The third question asked by the crowd is a request for a “sign” that would allow them to put faith in Jesus, as the manna in the desert al-lowed the Israelites to put faith in the Lord God. Parish News & Events

Let us pray for those members of our parish who are sick and suffering. If you would like a visit from Fr. Patrick, please call the parish office at 630-851-1436 to schedule a visit.

We pray for the Repose of the Soul of Donald Essling.

Our parish has joined a Catholic website called FORMED. This website is loaded with articles, videos, eBooks, and much more—all of which are thoroughly Catholic. You simply go to this website: https://formed.org (This is a secure site, which is why there is an “s” in the address). Once there, there will be a spot to enter our parish access code, which is 6MMWKC. We have unlimited access to everything on the site. I hope that you take advantage of this site, and pray that it will be ben-eficial to you. Fr. Patrick CONTRIBUTIONS Sunday, July 25

The next Annunciation food collection weekend will be August 7 and 8, 2021. Please bring your non-perishable donations to the rectory porch dur-ing that weekend and place in the food collection boxes. Please do not leave food in the church. Also, please check the dates on the items donated. Thank you so much for your support and generosity! Suggested items needed....canned food with meat or foods high in protein. Calling all choristers! What’s a chorister? A chorister is a child who loves to sing!

All parish children grades 3-8, regardless of the school they attend, are invited to join the Annunciation Jr. Choir. The choir provides the music for many Sunday masses and special occasions during the liturgical year.

The choir, now in its tenth season, will once again be directed by Mrs. Patricia Doctor, M. M. Ed. She is the former music specialist at Freeman School in West Aurora District 129. Mrs. Doctor has 26 years of experience working with children’s Church choirs.

The choir is accompanied by Bob Kresz, a fa-miliar face behind the organ at Sunday masses.

The choir rehearses on scheduled Wednesday evenings 5:15-6:15 p.m. in the church. To join the 2021-2022 Annunciation Jr. Choir, bring a parent with you to your first rehearsal, Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at 5:15 PM in the church.

Rediscovering Your Catholic Faith From the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church SECTION TWO: The Seven Sacraments of the Church Section One: The Sacramental Economy CHAPTER ONE: The Sacraments of Christian Initiation 251. How is Christian initiation brought about? Christian initiation is accomplished by means of the sacra-ments which establish the foundations of Christians life. The Sacrament of Baptism his Resurrection he gave to 252. What names are given to the first sacrament of initia-tion? This sacrament is primarily call Baptism because of the central rite with which it is celebrated. To baptize means to “immerse” in water. The one who is baptized is immersed into the death of Christ and rises with him as a “new creature” (2 Corinthians 5:17). This sacrament is also called the “bath of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5); and is called “enlightenment” because the baptized becomes “a son of light” (Ephesians 5:8). 253. How is Baptism prefigured in the Old Testament? In the Old Covenant Baptism was prefigured in various ways: water, seen as source of life and of death; in the Ark of Noah, which saved by means of water; In the passing through the Red Sea, which liberated Israel from Egyptian slavery; in the crossing of the Jordan River, that brought Israel into the prom-ised land which is the image of eternal life. 254. Who brought to fulfillment those prefiguration? All the Old Covenant prefigurations find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ. At the beginning of his public life Jesus had himself baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan. On the cross, blood and water, signs of Baptism and the Eucharist, flowed from his pierced side. After his Resurrection he gave to his Apostles this mission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nation, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). 255. Starting when and to whom has the Church adminis-tered Baptism? From the day of Pentecost, the Church has administered Bap-tism to anyone who believes in Jesus Christ. 256. In what does the essential rite of Baptism consist? The essential rite of this sacrament consists in immersing the candidate in water or pouring water over his or her head while invoking the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 257. Who can receive Baptism? Every person not yet baptized is able to receive Baptism.
