The people of St. Mary of the Annunciation continue to generously respond to the vision and needs of the To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign. This Archdiocesan campaign benefits important formation and education ministries in the Archdiocese and also addresses critical needs in each parish.

Campaign Update Only two weeks after the campaign was announced, we are off to an excellent start with more than $1,059,900 pledged thanks to the very generous commitments of 40 families! New pledges are received almost every day.

We thank you for your enthusiasm, generosity, and prayers. St. Mary is very grateful for your support and sacrific-es. As the campaign proceeds, our To Teach Who Christ Is team continues to contact more and more families each week to invite them to participate. When you receive a call, please accept their invitation and prayerfully consider how you might help. Your gift will ensure a vibrant future for St. Mary and for Catholic formation across Chicago. What Is Our Parish Goal? How Will The Funds Be Used? The financial goal for St. Mary of the Annunciation is $2.35 million. The components of the goal are:

• $642,000 for the shared formation and education ministries of the Archdiocese. Our parish school, religious education program, and adult formation ministry benefit from these Archdiocesan efforts. The Archdiocese calculates this portion of the goal for each parish as a percentage of Sunday offertory donations.

• $1.2 million to retire our debt, with the Archdiocese matching these funds on an extraordinary 3-to-1 ba-sis! The $3.6 million from the Archdiocese, when combined with the $1.2 million from St. Mary, will completely eliminate our $4.8 million capital debt!

• $328,000 to repave our crumbling, pothole-filled parking lots. Repeatedly patching the lots is a stop-gap meas-ure that does not remedy the long-term problem and is not an efficient use of parish funds. Once our debt has been retired, we will repave the three parking lots to ensure safety and ease of access.

• $182,000 to renovate the kitchen and basement of our historic 1869 church. This will improve our ability to host our PADS ministry serving the homeless, and allow greater use of the space by parish events and meetings.

A Word About Abundant Hope... Those who have been parishioners of St. Mary for a few years will recall Abundant Hope, a $10 million capital campaign launched in 2008 to retire our debt and build a new Intergenerational Learning Center. Unfortunately, the economy plunged a few weeks after Abundant Hope began and the campaign fell far short of its goal, raising $1.99 million. In keeping with the dual purpose of that campaign, $820,000 was applied to our debt while the $1.2 million balance remains in a dedicated account, earmarked for future expansion in keeping with our obligation to campaign donors. However, these funds are far less than what is needed to construct the new building for which they were given. We will revisit plans for a new building in the future, but our far more pressing need is to retire the parish debt. Indeed, we cannot move forward with a new building until we have paid for our current facilities.

Anointing of the Sick Joined to Christ, Witnesses of Hope and Healing This is the first in a series of articles with information from the United States Council of Catholic Bishops.

Anointing of the Sick is the sacrament that is received by those who are ill or suffering. By the sacred anointing and the prayer of the priest, the whole Church commends those who are sick to Christ. The sick person receives the Holy Spirit’s gifts of strength, faith, peace, and courage, and his or her suffering is united with the suffering of Christ for the building up of the Church (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], nos. 1520-23). Through the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, the Church carries out Jesus’ mission of compassion and healing for the sick. The one who is ill can also be a minister to others. By uniting their suffering to Christ, those who are sick can be signs of faith and witnesses of Christ’s Resurrection to the entire community (Pope John Paul II, Christifideles Laici [The Vocation and the Mission of the Lay Faithful in the Church and in the World], no. 54).

A Communal Celebration The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is both “a liturgical and a com-munal celebration.” In the family home, hospital, or church, members of the Body of Christ gather for the sacramental rite led by a priest. The Penitential Rite followed by the Liturgy of the Word and sacra-mental anointing of the sick can inspire and comfort both those who are ill and their family and friends who are gathered (CCC, nos. 1517-18). Many parishes have communal celebrations at which many per-sons receive the sacrament. These sacramental celebrations are a “source of strength amid pain and weakness, hope amid despair” and a “joyful encounter” for the entire community (Christifideles Laici, no. 54).

Connection to the Communion of Saints Anointing with sacred oil is a sign of blessing by the Holy Spirit of the one who is sick. Oil of the Sick, which receives a different blessing from the Chrism oil used during Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Or-ders, recalls the community’s sharing of the Holy Spirit and the sick person’s connection to the entire Body of Christ and Communion of Saints.

Imitation of Christ’s Compassion In the Gospels, Christ’s great compassion toward the sick is ex-pressed in the miraculous healings he performs, which heal the entire person, both body and soul. Parables such as the Good Samaritan (Lk 10:29-37) and the Judgment of the Nations (Mt 25:31-46) urge Christ’s followers to share his ministry of compassion and healing and to imi-tate his “preferential love for the sick” and all who suffer (CCC, nos. 1503, 1506; Pope Benedict XVI, Sacramentum Caritatis [Sacrament of Charity], no. 22).

Faith Formation Ministry Fair October 8th and 9th

Adult Faith Formation The Adult Faith Formation Ministry promotes learning and spiritual development for adults of the parish to deepen appreciation for the Catholic faith

Adult Initiation/RCIA The Adult Initiation Ministry of St. Mary prepares individuals for Chris-tian Initiation through a small-group process that includes spiritual formation, catechesis and a series of liturgical rites as prescribed in the Church’s Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.

Baptismal Preparation The baptism of a child is a significant moment in the life of a Christian family. Parents are expected to participate in a Baptismal Preparation session that helps them to better integrate the new birth and the change this initiates in family life into their spiritual lives.

Children’s Catechumenate Unbaptized children of school age are welcomed into a small-group faith building process that includes instructions in the Catholic Tradi-tion of prayer, doctrine and ritual and a socialization process that helps them make the Catholic way of life their own.

Religious Education Program (R.E.P.) St. Mary provides a thorough catechesis in the Roman Catholic Tradi-tion for all parish children so they might grow in their faith journey in communion with the Church and its life of prayer and mission.

Children's Liturgy of the Word Young children, ages 4 through 5th grade, are sent forward after the Opening Prayer to participate in the Liturgy of the Word, led by adult and teen leaders of prayer.

Cursillo Cursillo is a world-wide Lay Movement of the Roman Catholic Church which began in the 1940s. The word cursillo means “short course in Christian living.”

Marriage Preparation / FOCCUS FOCCUS is an acronym for “Facilitating Open Couple Communica-tion, Understanding and Study.” The FOCCUS instrument is a self-diagnostic tool designed to help engaged couples learn more about themselves and their unique relationship.

Mary’s Circle Mary’s Circle is a small faith-sharing group experience for all women of the parish. The goal of the group is to help individuals personally grow in faith and to support one another in the spiritual life.

Vacation Bible School Each summer St. Mary offers a Vacation Bible School for young chil-dren who, through fun filled activities and a carefully planned catech-esis, are immersed in the good news of the Bible.

Youth Ministry St. Mary of the Annunciation Youth Ministry accepts our mission to continue our life-long faith journey by nurturing and developing our gifts and talents empowering us to explore our faith and develop into committed disciples of Jesus Christ.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month Domestic violence has no place in a healthy relationship, whether the couple is dating, engaged, married or cohabiting. What’s the difference between normal conflict and domestic violence? Conflict is part of every intimate relationship–that’s why conflict resolution skills are important. Domestic violence, however, has no place in a healthy relationship, wheth-er the couple is dating, engaged, married or cohabiting. What is domestic violence? Domestic violence is any kind of behavior that a person uses, or threatens to use, to control an intimate partner. The two key elements are threat and control. Domestic violence can take various forms: Physical – Violent actions such as hitting, beating, pushing, and kicking. In many cases physical abuse becomes more frequent and severe over time. Sexual – Includes any sexual acts that are forced on one partner by the other Psychological – Includes a wide range of behaviors such as intimidation, isolating the victim from friends and family, controlling where the victim goes, making the victim feel guilty or crazy, and making unreasonable demands Emotional – Undermining an individual’s self-esteem, constant criticism, insults, put-downs, and name-calling Economic – Examples include limiting the victim’s access to family in-come, preventing the victim from working or forcing the victim to work, destroying the victim’s property, and making all the financial decisions Characteristics of victims • Female, although men can also experience domestic violence

• Younger, often in their 20’s and 30’s

• More likely to be dating or cohabiting than married Nearly half live in households with children Why do women stay? Women often stay with their abusers because of fear. They are afraid that the abuser will become more violent if they try to leave. Some fear that they will lose their children. Many believe that they cannot make it on their own. Some abused women believe that the abuse is their fault. They think that they can stop the abuse if they just act differently. Some cannot admit that they are abused women. Others feel pressured to stay in the relationship. They may feel cut off from social support and resources. Abused women often feel that they are alone, and have nowhere to turn for help.

Why do men batter? Abusive men come from all walks of life. They may be successful in their career and respected in their church and community. Abu-sive men often share some common characteristics. They tend to be jealous, possessive and easily angered. Many abusive men believe that women are inferior. They believe that men are meant to dominate and control women. Typically, abusive men deny that the abuse is happening or they minimize it. They may blame their partner for the abuse, saying, “You made me do this.” Alcohol and drugs are often associated with domestic violence but they do not cause it. An abusive man who drinks or uses drugs has two differ-ent problems: substance abuse and violence. Both must be treat-ed.

WHERE TO FIND HELP For abused women • Believe that you are not alone. Help is available for you and your children. • Talk in confidence to someone you trust: a relative, friend, pastor or family doctor • If you choose to stay in the situation, set up a plan of action to ensure your safety. This includes hiding a car key, personal documents, and some money in a safe place and locating some-where to go in an emergency. For more information about safety planning go to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. The National Domestic Violence Hotline provides crisis interven-tion and referrals to local sources of help in all 50 states. Call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or 1-800-787-3224 (TTY). For men who abuse • Admit that the abuse is your problem, not your partner’s. Begin to believe that you can change your behavior if you choose to do so. • Be willing to reach out for help. Talk to someone you trust who can help you to evaluate the situation. Contact Catholic Chari-ties or other church or community agencies for the name of a pro-gram for offenders. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) for information about where to find help. What the Catholic Church teaches about domestic violence The U.S. Catholic Bishops have made clear that “violence against women, inside or outside the home, is never justified. Violence in any form- physical, sexual, psychological, or verbal is sinful; often it is a crime as well.” Fr. Charles Dahm will speak at all of the masses on November 12/13 on this important topic. “Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was com-manded? So should it be with you. When you have done all

you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'" (Luke 17:10) In a quote I have often shared, Mark Twain once said, “Most people are bothered by those Scripture passages which they cannot understand. But for me, the passages in Scripture

which trouble me most are those which I do understand.” This is an-other of those passages that I do understand and find quite troubling. And, I think, they should scare you, too. Too often we approach our faith from a perspective of “What’s the least I have to do to get by?” We think we can fool and appease God by tossing him a few bones through occasional snippets of ritual action and lip service. And that we will be rewarded with a gold medal for doing so! Yet, there is noth-ing “least” or minimalist about God. His way is all about totality and completeness. We should not be deluded about our deserving any reward or pat on the back from God. God is a God of Love and Mercy…and a God of Expectations. We should not presume that we will be feted for doing our duty, any more than we would throw a party for one of our children when they complete a homework assignment on time or actu-ally put their dirty clothes in the laundry room. It’s more likely we would react by saying, “Just wonderful. You finally did what you were sup-posed to.” We cannot pride ourselves on fulfilling base obligations, especially when we so often fall short and give them minimal time & effort. Today’s Gospel challenges us to ask ourselves where we REALLY stand in our relationship with God. Do we simply go through the motions and give superficial attention to our Heavenly Father? Do we just maintain good appearances and observe the necessary rituals of our religion? Or are we in intimate love with Father, Son and Spirit, a relationship which drives every aspect of our lives? Are we spending choice and generous portions of our time, talent and resources on the work of the Gospel? Do we recognize how “unprofitable” we really are? Most of us (myself included) hold something back. We don’t put all our chips in the game. We cut corners and compromise on the demands. We convince ourselves that we’re doing “good enough” and are satisfied with that. Yet, there is nothing simply “good enough” or minimalist when it comes to God. His way is all about totality and com-pleteness. Christ’s words should scare us and rouse us from unjustified self-satisfaction and complacency. For in truth, we don’t even have faith the size of the teeny-tiny speck of a mustard seed. When I take an honest look in the proverbial spiritual mirror, I am only too aware of the many times when my thoughts and actions fall short of the Father’s will. Of the times when I hold back and cut corners because I don’t want to go out of my way. Of the times when my plans (or laziness) take precedence over the needs of others. Of the times when my spirit is not very generous. I have no claim on any sort of reward nor any basis for self-congratulatory pride. Moved by the clear statement of God’s expectations in the Gospel, may you and I embrace more deeply our Gospel obligations – out of love for God and out of gratitude for all he has done for us. May our thoughts, words, and actions clearly show that there is nothing simply “good enough” or minimalist when it comes to our relationship with God. Altar Server Training (4th grade and older)

Students in 4th grade and older are invited to par-ticipate in altar server training. There is onse more training session this autumn. You must sign up for

Altar servers are expected to sign up to serve at least one week-end Mass each month.

A Respect Life Holy Hour Service Monday, October 3, 7:00 p.m. in New Church All parishioners are invited. During the adoration of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, prayers for renewed strength to respect all life and the recitation of the Rosary will be offered. Come pray with us on this most important issue.

Laundry Volunteers Needed for PADS Would you like to help the homeless of Lake County through our PADS program? You might not know that our church provides dinner, shelter, breakfast and a packed lunch each week for 30-40 homeless guests through the PADS program. We provide food and shelter dur-ing the coldest months, from October to April. As we begin a new sea-son, we are in need of more laundry volunteers. Laundry volunteers simply wash the sheets so that we have fresh linens for our guests each week. Laundry volunteers help once a month (about 3 baskets of laundry) or as a backup volunteer. "Perspectives on the Scriptures"

Memorial Conference October 22, 2016

Fr. Patrick O’Malley was a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago for 56 years, passing away in 2013. He worked diligently and effectively to connect life with faith for the people of God. He had a great love for Scripture and wrote “Perspectives on the Scriptures” for the Archdio-cese of Chicago’s Catholic New World newspaper and for our parish bulletin for many years. Through the generosity of the ACTA (Adult Catechetical Teaching Aids) Foundation, the second of three yearly conferences will take place on Saturday, October 22. The Fr. Patrick O’Malley “Perspectives on the Scriptures” Memorial Conference is designed for all people seeking a deeper relationship with Christ. It will be relevant for laity, deacons and priests. The focus of the 2016 conference will be on the Gospel of Matthew (Sunday Cycle A). The speakers will be noted scripture scholars Dr. Elizabeth Nagel, Professor in the Department of Biblical Studies and Homiletics at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, and Fr. Donald Senior, C.P. President Emeritus, Chancellor, Professor of New Testament Studies at Catholic Theological Union. In 2005, he earned a doctoral degree, STD, at the International Marian Research Institute, Dayton, Ohio, which is affiliated with the Pontifical University Marianum in Rome. From 1996-2010 he served as Rector/President of St. Joseph College Seminary in Chicago. From 2010-2016 he served as the Vice Rector for Administration at Mundelein Seminary, serving as Director of Admissions and Assistant Professor in the Department of Dogmatic Theology. He is author of The Blessed Virgin Mary in the Third Typical Edition of the Roman Missal, appearing in a collection of essays Lift up your Hearts edited by Rev. Robert Tuzik. Fr. Adult Initiation Adults who wish to become Roman Catholics are enrolled in a formation process that includes prayer, dialogue, instruction, and introduction to the Church’s life and values, rituals and tradition. Call the parish office for more information.

Marriage St. Mary Parish rejoices with parishioners who are preparing for the Sacrament of Matrimony. The Church requires at least four months’ time before the marriage for adequate preparation. A parish wedding information packet is available at the parish office.

Ministry of Care Ministers of Care visit the homes of the sick, homebound, or hospitalized and bring Holy Communion to them. Call the parish office when a pastoral visit is desired. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered by the parish priest upon request.
