Reflecting on God’s Word The disciples were cowering behind locked doors. Fear has a way of imprisoning, away from the outer world, but also from our inner world, taking away our freedom to hope, imagine, and dream. We can become comfortable working in cramped spaces, isolated and unattached, re-moved from life and contact with others.

But then along comes the risen Lord, arms outstretched, heart wide open, bearing gifts to transform our lives. This peace is a gift that the world cannot give.

The second gift is a mission: we are sent, as Jesus was sent, by the Father. Where? To the world. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that every-one who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the

During the pastorate of Fr. Laukemper (1927–1932), through the ingenuity and hard work of parishioners, the church building was raised and a basement hall was con-structed. The church was hoisted up three feet with jacks, and the stone foundation was removed. Complete excava-tion of the basement was done using slip scrapers drawn by teams of horses. Labor and equipment were furnished by members of the parish. A new concrete foundation and floor was installed in order to provide a hall for church ac-tivities.

During our Sesquicentennial year the History Committee presents weekly selections from the treasure chest of our precious past.

June is a season of transitions. Graduates are preparing for ad-vanced studies or pursuing employment. A number of families find summer to be the opportune time to move to a new house or new location. For our Consortium of Catholic schools, which includes St. Mary, Santa Maria del Popolo, Transfiguration and Frassati Catholic Academy, we are transitioning into a different model of administration. The new model is called AIM (Archdiocesan Initiative Model). In the AIM model there are additional resources provided for us which will support our academic program. There will also be a consolidated and cen-tralized financial administration of the Consortium schools which in the end will help our participating parishes with their budgets. As with every transition in life there’s bound to be some inconvenience and even pain. One consequence of the AIM model in addition to not using classrooms at Santa Maria del Popolo, was that there had to be a reassignment of teachers in the Consortium, which unfortunately left some teachers with-out a contract for next year. While these kinds of changes can be unsettling, there’s always some good that comes from a transition and we have to stay positive and move forward with a renewed spirit. The good news is that our Consortium is stronger today than it was a year ago. And the refinement of our academic and spiritual program makes this a great time to invest in Catholic Education. As we enter the summer, it’s a good time for families to consider a Catholic school for their children.

This June also marks my own transition from pastor of St. Mary to a new assignment as the Cardinal’s Delegate for Parish Transformation. In this new position, I will serve as a resource to all our Archdiocesan parishes in Cook and Lake counties. The Parish Transformation program helps parishes to more clearly define their mission and to outline specific strate-gies for being more effective and vibrant communities of faith and mission. While I’m working with Parish Transformation I will be a resident priest at St. Theresa Parish in Palatine. I will also remain as Archdiocesan Dean for Deanery I-A, which in-cludes St. Mary of the Annunciation. Many have asked about final weekend in the parish. I will preach and celebrate all the Masses on the weekend of June 28-29. The last Mass at 11:30am will mark the conclusion of my service to you as your pastor. Next weekend I will offer in the bulletin my reflections on 18 years as pastor of St. Mary. My heart is full of gratitude for the precious memories I will always hold dear. Even with the excitement that comes with starting a new assignment, there is certainly a bit of sadness in leaving a community that has been my home for so long. I hope you will keep me in your prayers as I promise to keep you in my prayers, especially in this time of transition. Fr. Ron Lewinski

Set-Up Meeting for SesquiFEST What is SesquiFEST-a theatrical re-enactment of the early years of St Mary of the Annunciation, based on the rich chronicles published by the Sesquicentennial Historical Commit-tee. One live performance will be presented to the St Mary community during Harvest Fest on Saturday, September 27.

Who should attend-Anyone, younger or older, who would enjoy be-ing a part of the live re-telling of the early years of our beloved parish. If you have a special gift—ability to play banjo, guitar, ukele, flute or recorder, we would love to see you, too! If you have always dreamed of “getting on stage” what better time than NOW!

When-We will hold two meetings—Tuesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 12 at 7pm in one of the meeting rooms in the new church.

What will we do—Discuss the plan, form a writing team, establish a rehearsal schedule for the summer months. (Our goal will be to target at least two rehearsals/week during July, August and September, based on the troupe’s availability)

If you cannot devote the time, but would still enjoy being part of the endeavor, come anyway! We would love to find a way for anyone interested to be part of SesquiFEST!

Teacher Testimonial “I have been teaching at St. Mary School since 1986. At first it made sense to teach here because my children were attending St. Mary School. I quickly grew to love my job. The parents are supportive, the students are eager to learn, and the staff is collaborative. I love that I can expand from the classroom into activities that showcase the student talents and learning. Because the school is fairly small, it is easy for me to develop relationships with all of the students in the school. I know the parents. I feel comfortable sharing happy and sad moments that I experienced with their children during the school day. The older students know and care for the PreK, Kindergarten and First Grade students. They check in with them to see if they had a good day. They help them at their lockers. The cur-riculum and educational experience have changed over the years. What has not changed is the family feeling all stakeholders have at St. Mary of the Annunciation School. I have three children who graduated from St. Mary. Throughout their St. Mary educational experience, they experienced episodes of great success and times when they needed assistance in one subject or another. Always, the expectations were high and they had to continuously strive to learn and achieve good grades. When my children went to Carmel High School, they were well-prepared to meet the expectations set for them there. When they went to college, they excelled in their fields.” —Donna Sonza-Novera St. Mary of the Annunciation Teacher P.E., Health & Technology Coordinator

Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak “Help Wanted – Evangelizers”

With today’s celebration of Pentecost Sunday, the 2014 Easter Sea-son comes to an end. During this 50 day period that followed Easter Sunday, we have celebrated with joy and exultation, as if these days were one feast day, indeed one “Great Sunday.” I pray that we all have had some positive spiritual experiences during this most sacred time in our Church and were able to realize the sanctifying impact of Easter Season services. When I asked a number of parishioners which of the Easter liturgies they found most spiritually uplifting, most of them (without hesitation) mentioned the Easter Vigil as the most profound. But then they asked me a question. They asked, “Why weren’t any new adult baptized at that liturgy?” Although they thought the Vigil service was inspiring, they thought that from a parish the size of St. Mary, there would have been more persons completing the ini-tiation process and felt that if there had been someone going through that rite, the liturgy would be more closely linked with early Christian-ity. I didn’t know the “Why,” to these questions, so I got in touch with Kathi Barrett, the Coordinator of our parish Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process, and asked her that same question. Kathi thought that a more pertinent question related to this issue may be, “Who is responsible for bringing forth candidates for “initiation” at the Easter Vigil or for the RCIA process in general?” The Catholic Church’s answer is that the responsibility belongs to ALL the bap-tized, each and every one of us. Kathi went on to say that the ritual text Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the “Bible” for the guidelines and mandates for the RCIA process clearly states that, “initiation” is the responsibility of all the baptized and at our baptisms are asked to reach out to those who are or who may be seeking to find Jesus. We are once again called to be “Evangelizers.” Further, the faith commu-nity of the baptized are expected to invite those who are seeking Christ into their homes, into their lives and to engage them in personal conversation and encourage “seekers” to come to faith community gatherings so that they may actually experience the joy of being a part of that community. As Jesus said, “Come and see.”

So if we too may have wondered why there were no adults for “initiation” at the Easter Vigil, we may want to think about our role as “Evangelizers” in this wonderful “Kingdom of God” to which we all belong. You may be inspired to get more personally involved in the RCIA process here at St. Mary. We have before us a golden opportu-nity to live our faith, to be “fishers” of men and women, missionaries to those who may be ready to begin the journey of “initiation” into the Catholic faith.

“Don’t think it can be done?” Who would have thought that we would have a Pope who would live in a hotel instead of a palace, walk to work, eat meals with the poor and publicly hug and kiss a disfigured man? Our new Pope Francis has given new meaning to “sharing our faith.” Let’s share our faith by doing our part in encouraging, inviting, welcoming, yes being evangelizers for those who may be seeking Jesus through the RCIA process. Please contact Kathi through the parish office if you would like more information on becoming an “RCIA Evangelizer.” Are you ready to “walk the talk” and become an active RCIA Evangelizer? And Jesus said, “Come and see.”

May God love you and keep you in his warm embrace!

Priestless Weekdays Coming June 17–19 Every three years the entire Chicago Presbyterate (all the priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago) gather for a clergy convocation in St. Charles, IL. Convened by Cardinal George, all the priests of the Archdiocese are expected to participate in these days of prayer and reflection, inspiration and ongoing education. We will not celebrate morning Mass on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, June 17, 18 and 19. We will have 8:00 AM Commun-ion services on these days that include the prayers and scrip-tures of the day. Mass will still be offered at Marytown at 7:00 AM and 12:00 Noon. During these days everyone is asked to pray for the Cardinal and his priests and for future vocations to the priest-hood. Pastoral emergencies will still be received and channeled through the parish office.

Having Difficulty Hearing the Mass? The church has an induction loop system. If you use a hearing aid, switch it to use the T-coil. If your hearing aid does not have this feature or if you simply need better amplification, ask an usher for hearing loop headphones. You’ll be amazed at the clarity!

Congratulations Adult Confirmands Al & Jennifer Olorvida and Zach Wolniak were confirmed at the Adult Confirmation Mass on Wednesday, June 4 at St. Francis De Sales in Lake Zurich. Al, Jen and Zach were joined with other adults throughout the Vicariate who have spent weeks preparing for this final initiation sacrament. Congratulations and best wishes to all the newly con-firmed!

Parish Office Summer Hours

Monday–Thursday: 8:30AM–4:30 PM Friday: 8:30–12:00 PM

Saturday & Sunday: closed

Congratulations St. Mary Kindergarten Graduates, Class of 2014!

Commemorative Parish History Books The commemorative Sesquicentennial parish history is now available in the parish office during normal business hours. "Nothing is Im-possible with God: the Story of St. Mary of the Annunciation, Fremont Center, Illinois" com-memorates our rich history and spiritual heri-tage from the very beginning of the Catholic community in Fremont Center to the events of our Sesquicentennial year. The richly illustrated narrative honors the faithful witness of genera-tions and the abundant blessings our parish

has enjoyed over the past 150 years and should inspire us to make our own contribution to the proud history of our parish and be faithful stewards of the sacred inheritance we have received from our ances-tors in Christ. Available at the parish office, $10.00.

For anyone interested in a more extensive chro-nology of key events in the history of the parish and Fremont Center with a particular focus on the German families who pioneered the parish, "The Chronicle of St. Mary of the Annunciation" is also available. This exhaustively-researched volume features never-before-seen excerpts from the correspondence of early parishioners,

land maps, newspaper clippings, photos and more and is available on a print-on-demand basis at: http://www.cafepress.com/stmaryfc. Both of these attractive volumes are a great addition to any parishioner’s library and also make great gifts! Both books are brought to you by the Sesquicentennial History Com-mittee. Happy reading!

St. Mary Religious Education (REP) The Religious Education Program recently finished another successful year of faith formation. Many thanks to the volunteer catechists who so generously give of their time to “Echo the Word” to the children of our parish. We could not run our program without them.

The summer session for 2014 is now full and further registration forms will not be accepted for summer. The fall registration is ongoing but make sure to get your forms in be-fore June 1 to avoid paying late fees. Registration forms are on the parish web site or in the kiosk in the narthex. The summer session is in need of a few more catechists, so if you find you have mornings free the weeks of July 7-18 and would like to share your faith with our students, please contact me to talk more about it. If you are new to St. Mary and would like to enroll your children in our program but have not yet registered with the parish, just give the office a call and we can set up a time for you to register. Children begin for-mal faith formation in first grade and continue through their school years until confirmation in 8th grade. Contact Sue Matousek at [email protected] or 847-223-0010 with any questions.

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

A few months ago I found myself standing in the Upper Room and reflecting on the significant events that took place there.

Located only a stone’s throw from Caiaphas’ house (with the prison where Jesus was held after his arrest), it was very easy to appreciate why the Apostles had locked themselves inside, out of fear for their lives. Yet, it was from that room that the Church burst forth to spread the Good News of Salvation to the ends of the earth.

As we celebrate Pentecost today, we can mistakenly look on this feast merely as a commemoration of a long-ago historical event. But, in fact, Pentecost happens with you and me now, not just with the Apostles yesterday. We need to be personally aflame for Jesus Christ and His Church, not just wear red clothing. As part of the celebration, we need to examine how well we are doing as individuals and as a community in fulfilling the mission to bring the Gospel to the whole world.

Do we live a Pentecost faith? Or do we keep our faith locked up in some safe, comfortable upper room? Faith can be confined to the "upper room" of Sunday Mass or focused primarily on personal devo-tions. But a Pentecost faith uses those things to fuel actions and a lifestyle based on Gospel values. A Pentecost faith looks first at our obligations to God and then fits our other responsibilities around Him, not vice-versa. A Pentecost faith is missionary and reaches out to others and seeks to concretely address their needs – spiritual, emo-tional and physical.

We are all painfully aware that active participation in the life of the Church, which starts with Sunday Mass attendance, has been eroding. Studies show that weekly mass attendance in the U.S. has been on a decline since the late 1950’s. Approximately one-third of U.S. Catho-lics are currently going to Mass on Sundays, down from nearly 75% in the 1950’s. On average, 6.4% of those in a parish provide 80% of the volunteer hours; 6.8% provide 80% of the financial support. There are a gazillion other statistics that could be quoted, but we all get the pic-ture. We experience over-flowing churches on Christmas and Easter and wonder why these fellow Catholics aren’t joining us the other Sun-days of the year.

There is no single explanation for this situation. Rather, the current state is the result of many intertwined factors. If I know one thing, it’s that any simplistic explanation is inherently wrong. Yes, some may have distorted the Vatican II changes to mean that there are no longer any required demands associated with being a Catholic. But declining participation began before the Council and has affected all denomina-tions, many much more than the Catholic Church. Yes, the sexual abuse scandal is horrific any which way you consider it. And, yes, it keeps some people away from the Church. But weekly mass atten-dance has not declined during this period. Our culture has become less disciplined, more self-centered and seems to have eliminated universal moral absolutes. But this is by no means the only age in which the Church has confronted an environment that is hostile to its values and mission.

While there are institutional evangelization initiatives, I think the real solution begins with you and me as individual disciples of Jesus Christ. Part of the problem is that we Catholics don’t look much different than anyone else. At its core, Christianity is counter-cultural. Yet our lives today seem to mostly embrace our culture. Our divorce rate, our life-styles, our entertainment choices, our knowledge of the faith, etc., all mirror the prevailing culture rather than bucking the trends. What are

we doing that is really counter-cultural, both for ourselves as well as for our children? What acts of service and sacrifice are we making on a routine basis?

Our faith doesn’t seem to be forming our lives differently than the lives of non-believers or of non-practicing Catholics. We need to take a deep, hard look at our spiritual selves. Are we going to mass every week? Have we arranged our lives so that we are part of the 6.x% that volunteers time and helps fund the mission of the Church? Are we praying every day? Are we studying our faith? What was the last Catholic book you read? What incremental changes can we make in our lives to get things moving in the right (counter-cultural) direction?

Pentecost reminds us that we are each called to leave the comfort of our current routine (our personal version of the Upper Room) in order to do more for the Gospel. May our faith be enflamed and may we be stirred to greater action and commitment this Pentecost. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an email to [email protected].

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Office of the Archbishop

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In dioceses where many people are dependent on the Church for social and pastoral support, as in regions where Catholics are persecuted for their faith, Pope Francis extends his charity to those most in need. Our participation in the annual Peter’s Pence Col-lection provides us the opportunity to be a witness of char-ity, as His Holiness encouraged us to be in his Easter mes-sage. In addition, our financial support of this annual collec-tion will assist Pope Francis in strengthening diocese, reli-gious orders and struggling communities of faith. I thank you for your generosity. May our Lord continue to bless you and your loved ones as you share your faith and charity in your parish, the Archdiocese of Chicago and throughout the Universal Church. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours. Sincerely in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M. I.

As a group the work includes helping local families in Eastern Kentucky with much needed home repairs, anything from repairing floors, roofs, ceilings, walls, building wheel-chair ramps, assisting in a food pantry and warehouse. We travel Sun-day, June 15 arriving in Auxier, Kentucky. We spend the evening pre-paring to serve the needs of the people in the counties of Floyd, John-son, Magoffin and Martin until Wednesday Noon. Our group departs the Auxier Center to another very special place, the home of Thomas Merton, trappist monk. We will arrive at the Abbey of Gethsemani in time to join the monks in vespers. An overnight in the most beautiful small town in America, Bardstown, KY will give us am-ple time to take in some sites and a tour of a famous bourbon distillery. Our journey will return us to Mundelein in the early evening hour with refreshed spirit, new vision and hearts opened wide. We hope our parish missioners grow a strong spirit of friendship with our neighbors of Appalachia for years to come.

Featured CD for June Born Again? Faith Alone? by Stephen Ray In one of his most focused talks to date, Stephen Ray discusses salvation, the authen-

tic biblical understanding of being "born again", and how we are saved by faith, but not "faith alone". With great humor and doctrinal depth, he goes all the way back to Abraham to show that we are saved by faith and obedience to all that Christ demands of us. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material

E aster reaches its fullness today, the 50th day, the Spirit’s day, birthday of the

church, great Pentecost! What began in cold ashes, what was washed with water and oiled with gladness and nourished with bread and wine now is filled with breath and stirred aflame. Breathe deeply today; let every breath be a prayer. Play the flute or the kazoo. Hang wind chimes to catch God’s breath. Fly a kite. Be on fire today; live pas-sionately. Read a love poem. Challenge someone to act on behalf of the common

Fullness of Easter good. Take a stand against a grave injustice. Light seven candles on the dinner table. Wear red. Eat strawberries (if you’re not al-lergic). Sing “Come, Holy Ghost.” (And if you don’t know it, find someone to teach it to you.) Fifty days of Easter have been given for our delight and for our salvation. Rejoice and be glad! Hope Out of Darkness “I was a stranger and you welcomed me..”(Matthew 25:35) Pope Francis tells us “Migrants present a particular challenge for me, since I am the pastor of a Church without frontiers, a Church which considers herself mother to all. For this reason, I exhort all countries to a generous openness, which, rather than fearing the loss of local iden-tity, will prove capable of creating new forms of cultural synthe-sis” (Evangelii Gaudium, 210). In communion with our Holy Father, we generously welcome people into our church and community. This sum-mer, let us ask Congress to pass compassionate and commonsense immigration reform.
