“ THE VOICE OF ONE IN THE DESERT —

PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD”

Sunday, January 1, 2017 Feast of the Motherhood of Mary

In fulfillment of this precept, Mary’s newborn child is given the name Jesus on the eighth day according to the Jewish custom. Joseph and Mary gave the name Jesus because tht is the name given by God’s messenger before Jesus was conceived in Mary’s womb. This name signifies Jesus’ identity and his mission. The literal Hebrew means the Lord saves. Since God alone can forgive sins and free us from death, it is God who, in Jesus his eternal Son became man to offer up his life as the atoning sacrifice to save his people from their sins. The son that Mary bore is both God and man—the “Word who was God” and who “became flesh and dwelt among us”. That is why Mary is not only called the mother of the Christ (the Greek word for Messiah in Hebrew) but also the mother of God or Theotokos in Greek which literally means “God bearer.”

In the birth and naming of this child we see the wondrous design and plan of God in giving us a Savior who would bring us grace (the gift of God’s favor), mercy, and freedom from the power of sin and the fear of death. The name Jesus signifies that the very name of God is present in the person of his Son who became man for our salvation. Peter the Apostle exclaimed th at there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved. In the name of Jesus demons flee, cripples walk, the blind see, the deaf hear, and the dead are raised. His name is exalted far above every other name. The name Jesus is at the heart of all Christian prayer. It is through and in Jesus that we pray to the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit. Many Christians have died with one word on their lips, the name of Jesus. Do you exalt the name of Jesus and pray with confidence in his name?

VOCATION PRAYER CHALICE The Vocation Chalice will be at the home of Yvonne & David Adler. Please join them in praying for vocations. Call the Parish Center (834-0340) to sign up to have the chalice in your home for one week.

SANCTUARY LAMP This week the sanctuary lamp will burn In Memory of Douglas Junius Robicheaux, Sr.

FLOWERS ON THE ALTAR Poinsettias on the altar this week are in memory of immediate family members, friends and relatives of St. Francis Xavier parishioners.

ADORATION CHAPEL CLOSING The Adoration Chapel is also closed for Christmas and will reopen on Wednesday, January 4 at 7:00 A.M. A WORD OF CHRISTMAS THANKS As pastor I wish to express a word of thanks to the parishioners and all the members of the various organizations of the parish for their special efforts to make the celebration of Christmas a beautiful one here at the parish and for the many people who need a little help from us to make their Christmas brighter for themselves and their families. A special thanks to the Men’s Club for the great job they did in putting up the lights and the crib in front of the church. To the Daughters of Isabella and the Knights of Columbus for their efforts to make Christmas a happier occasion for the children and adults of the Special Children’s Masses here during the year, for decorating the church for Christmas and for their hard work for the Giving Tree and its many gifts to the poor. To the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Deacon Ed’s Food Bank and Helping Hand Ministry for their tireless work at Christmas and throughout the year to reach out in works of charity to the many poor of our parish and community to get a little help from us. Last, but certainly not least, to the parishioners and friends of St. Francis Xavier who make all of this possible by their generosity of canned goods and funds and who always respond to our call for help in reaching out to the poor. May God bless our parish, its members and all of those who volunteer their time, talent and treasure with good health and happiness in the new year that will begin this Sunday!

The First graders depict the Nativity story

On the last day of school, the first graders offered their rendition of the Nativity story as told by Matthew. The prayer service was led by Father T, with Mr. Jonathan Vitale and Ms. Barbara Martin offering the readings. The Choir lent their musical talents and the first graders did a wonderful job with their reenact-ment to the applause of parents and grandparents.
