Mission: We the people of the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, seek to be an example of the presence of God through our Christian Catholic worship, education, service and stewardship of all God’s gifts. We celebrate our diversity of age, culture, language, and view points as a sign of God’s all powerful and ever-present love in our community of faith. We strive to witness the gospel of Jesus Christ to evangelize and to respond in love, as well as compassion to our community in Honolulu, to be a welcoming place to all who seek the grace, fellowship, and love of God. Our Lord Jesus speaks to us in the Gospel this Sunday that when we pray to our Father in heaven he hears and answers our prayer. Jesus’ various pronouncements about prayer in the four gospels are quite far-reaching and comforting to ponder with: “...whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you” (Jn 16:23); “... I tell you, all that you asked for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours” (Mk 11:24); “...if two of you agree on earth about for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my Heavenly Father” (Mt 18,19). The gospel on this 17th Sunday of Ordinary Time, carries the same strong declaration: “And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (Luke 11:9-10). I hope these words of Jesus will give you comfort and move your heart to patiently wait like a child who trustingly rests in the arms of the father. Jesus speaks to us that our Father in heaven will always do for us whatever is in our best interest and what’s good for our soul. He assures us that, “As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him” (Mt.7,11). I pray that your hope in God’s providence will grow through the intercession of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, especially for those of you who are having difficulty in making sense and finding tangible manifestations of these reassuring words of Jesus. Many of us may have experienced that it took a while before our prayer is answered and maybe it took sometimes for us to recognize that God already answered our prayer in different ways. And also, sometimes our prayer of petition tends to undergo a change of content with the passing of time and we realized that after all it’s for our own good. Of course, those of us who are in a habit of prayer can attest that this requires patience and humility which we also beg from God. But those of you who are having burdens in life, restlessly waiting or questioning God’s providence, please know that God oftentimes blessed us with his PRESENCE, more than what we asked for. He enters and walks with us in our pains and struggles to strengthen us. Indeed, he comes to us in a special and personal way through the Eucharist that our faith community celebrates. Let us unite our hearts and minds with the words of the Responsorial Psalm, “Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me;” and let us be inspired to comfort those in trouble in our midst and pray for each other. May our communion with the awesome presence of Jesus in the Eucharist fill our hearts with much gratitude to the enduring mercy of God in our lives. — Fr. Manny Hewe

July 28, 2019 The Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,Let us come to God in prayer as children with a spirit of trust and expectant heart, for we become better “children of prayer” when we learn what it means to be a little child resting in the arms of our Father!

Saint Theresa School3rd Annual Golf Tournament

All of us at Saint Theresa School would like to thank you for supporting our annual golf

tournaments. The funds raised last year and the year before allowed us to install the much need A/C units in all of our classrooms. This was a $200,000 project and without you this project would not have been possible.

But we’re not done yet. We still owe a balance of $28,000 toward this project and we know with your continued sup-port we can bring this balance to ZERO!!.

We are now in the planning stages of this years tourna-ment and need your help. We would like to be able to have our committe formed by the end of August. WON’T YOU HELP!! Please call the school office at 536-4703 if you would like to help plan this years event. Mahalo for your Kokua !!!

Dear friend in Christ, Peace be with you. When the Son of God entered into his public ministry, he called to himself the Twelve Apostles, upon whom he entrusted his own power and authority to cast out demons, cure diseases, and to preach the kingdom of God and to heal (c.f. Lk. 9:1-2). Yet our Lord and his Apostles were not without support in their ministry. Certain women, some who were acknowledged by name, and many other people who were acknowledged only anonymously, provided for them out of their means (cf. Lk. 8:1-3). To this day, our Lord continues to call certain men to himself for the sake of priestly ministry, and the need for provision crucially remains, especially during the time of a man’s formal academic formation within the seminary system. Not including the overhead and operational expenses typically associated with managing an Office of Vocations, the education costs alone (tuition, room and board) per each seminarian total approximately $320,000 over the course of his four years of undergraduate studies in philosophy, four years of graduate studies in Theology, and one year of pastoral formation within a parish community. Because of these costs, and despite the generosity of so many of the faithful, the Office of Vocations operates, on average, annually at a deficit of over $200,000.I humbly ask you to please prayerfully consider making a financial donation towards priestly vocations. Your gift would directly contribute to the education of our seminarians and is much needed and greatly appreciated.

(Mt. 13:33 - NAB)

Starting a new school year is like moving out of an old home and into a new one! Since June 1, 2019 school staff and volunteers have been working to purge old and damaged school furniture, give away old books, dispose of equipment that cannot be repaired, strip and wax the floors, repair the plumbing, fix the woodwork, fix the spalling areas, seal the roofs, retouch the painting in the much needed areas, clean out the overgrown neglected landscaping areas, maintain and upkeep the cutting of the grass areas, and the list goes on and on. When it’s all done, the cycle continues. After the 2019-2020 is all over, the cycle of purging, maintaining, repairing and fixing up starts up again. Like your home, a school has to do the same maintenance so it is safe and enjoyable when the children are on campus.

During the summer and the school year, several families come to tour the school to see if this is where they want their child or children to learn. Our teachers also have to update their professional standings by attending workshops, participate in conferences or symposiums, read educational material that help them to enhance their teaching career, and find time to rest and rejuvenate so they are ready for their students in the new year.

The administration, faculty and staff of St. Theresa School welcomes back all their students and families to a new school year! Their doors open on August 7th. If you have a son, daughter, grandchild, niece, nephew or neighbor children, there is on-going registration throughout the year. The school is equipped to teach children pre-school age 3 to 8th grade. At the elementary level, each homeroom caps at 25 students. Once the homeroom is filled with 25, then a wait-list is taken for that grade level. The middle school is fully staffed with each subject having a teacher that specializes in the field. Therefore, the middle school (grades 6-8) is equipped to have two homerooms per grade level.

Parishioners are always welcome to tour the campus. Call the school office at 536-4703 to make an appointment. Come see your parish school in action!

The Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary TimeA prominent theme in today’s Gospel parable isgenerosity. Late at night, a sleepy friend responds to his neighbor’s request for food for an unexpected guest. Jesus suggests that it would be unthinkable for a friend to deny a friend in need. A friend would most certainly give what is asked and more. Through this story, Jesus illustrates God’s generosity. Good stewards realize the extraordinary love and graciousness with which God showers us. We need never convince Godto be generous. God is already that generous friend. His abundant love bathes us in goodness. This week, prayerfully reflect on God’s generosity to us. Whatshould our response be to that generosity? Ju
