A Word From the District Governor

Enrich …..Engage ……Enjoy

The convention and AGM lived to its theme Enrich Engage and Enjoy – Experience the Joy of Service.

It was a weekend filled with knowledge and forward planning with a good selection of guest speakers on Lions activities by PID Tony Benbow OAM, Bionics - Dr Robert Klupacs, Genetics by Prof Ingrid Winship and the importance of membership by PDG Ann Eldridge. All the speakers kept the conventioneers enriched.

The weekend was about Engagement , firstly the Leos helping out at the flag ceremony, car parking and other areas in the convention. We also engaged with the Rotary Club of Healesville with them cooking the BBQ on Sunday Lunch. Most importantly 48 Lions clubs and 218 Lions and Leos engaged in a weekend filled with fun and Laughter.

It was a privilege to have all Victorian District Governors present at the convention.

Most importantly we had time to enjoy. On Friday night 115 Lions and guests met for the meet and greet dinner held at the Sanctuary Resort which was a very casual event enjoyed by all. The day sessions were full of humour and laughter with our SAA PDG Brian keeping all entertained . A special mention of the singing duo Lions Don and Sam who were a bit of a surprise package.

The Saturday night dinner dance was a winner with the country and western theme costumes, country music, and some great food, kept almost everyone dancing till the end of the evening.

Back to the convention centre on Sunday morning with a memorial service remembering 15 Lions that had passed away in the last 12 months. The service was attended by family members.

Comments about the convention were all positive and we hope this trend will continue. I couldn’t have asked anything more from a committee that worked as one team and my sincere thanks to all for their tireless efforts.

Wooh!!! What a great convention! Lots of information, fun and fellowship. Approximately ¾ of the clubs in the district were represented. This means that clubs will now have enthusiastic members with lots of ideas – and new friends.

The presentation by the Seymour Goulburn Lions to promote next year’s convention gave everyone a laugh and something to look forward to next year. Convention 2020 10th and 11th October. Put it in your diary now.

Toolamba Lions – Seniors Week Event

Assisted by a grant from Greater Shepparton City Council, we organised an afternoon tea for local seniors as part of Seniors Week. We planned to cater for 60 visitors and had to turn down many more requests for tickets. Lots of planning and hard work ensured that the event ran smoothly, and everyone had a good time.

Four of our local councillors (including the mayor) attended, as did our federal member for Nicholls. Members of the local community chipped in to help, baking sausage rolls, scones and other goodies. The community hall was decorated with displays by local groups including Toolamba Primary School, Toolamba Wrens CWA, craft group, Lions and some local artists. Entertainment was from a group of young singers from the primary school. Our guests all had a great time and hoped that we would do it again next year.

Wantirna shares a strong bond with the Bayswater Seniors and is always willing to assist. A great day was had by all as usual.

What’s The BuzzALHD - Australian Lions Hearing Dogs Open Day

ALHD held their annual Open Day on Sunday the 22nd of September.

On the day there were more than 700 people in attendance despite the weather putting a bit of a dampener on the day. This was by far the biggest attendance that we have had in a number of years. We had new sponsors on board, Mt Barker Pet Care Centre and Black Hawk who are now our nutritional sponsors for ALHD supplying premium dog food free of charge. They also gave out over 450 free show bags on the day. Also, part of the event was the Australia Hearing Bus doing hearing checks, an Alpaca for visitors to pat and of course our Foster Pups. Many market stalls on the day added to the event and they were well supported by the visitors on the day.

“They see them at home, in hospital, during treatments, they see them for wellness projects, they develop a really close bond with their ladies and that bond continues for the rest of their life,” she said.

Pink merchandise and a range of raffles enticed visitors and locals to join the women in getting their pink on.Pink portraits from the local primary school lined fences along the main street for visitors to view.

Each painting had its own fundraising bucket and people could buy a ticket and vote for their favourite painting.

Ms Henderson said the event would become an annual event in the town’s diary with ideas for next year already in the planning.

“We had the idea of running a house decorating competition and also a gala dinner for next years event, so watch this space,” Ms Henderson said.

Or should I say – their third puppy! ‘Maxie’ was the name chosen by SVLC members for the club’s 3rd sponsorship hearing dog in the Lions Hearing Dogs Puppy Program. Maxie, a Tenterfield Terrier, was born in April 2019 and is currently beginning his training in the hands of Foster Carers, Amy and family.

Two previous dogs sponsored by SVLC, LuLu and Oscar again named by club members, have completed their training and have been placed with worthy recipients in WA and Geelong.

The Puppy Program began in April 2018 with the first two pups entering training in October the same year. The Puppy Program will enable the Hearing Dogs to keep up with the increasing demand for Hearing Dogs.

SVLC members receive regular update reports, including photographs, sharing information on Maxie’s training, what activities he has been up to and his development to become a fully trained hearing dog. Reports are always eagerly received by SVLC members and help form a close ‘Ownership’ of the club’s sponsorship and what benefits the club’s investment is achieving.

SOUTH VERMONT SPONSOR A PUPPY

In partnership with the Merrigum Lions Club, Julie Henderson and Mel Clohesy decided to raise funds for breast cancer workers after seeing the profound impact they had on their loved ones who were suffering cancer.

“My little sister is an 11-year survivor of breast cancer, but Mel’s sister passed away three years ago,” Ms Henderson said.

“The McGrath Foundation nurses look after our local ladies from diagnoses all the way through.

Early Advice – 2020 MD201 AGM & Convention in Adelaide

www.lionsadelaideconvention2020.com.au May 15-18th

The District Disaster Relief Trust is comprised of 5 trustees who are duly elected at the AGM/Convention in rotation, each year and serve for a period of 5 years. The purpose of the Trust is to provide help & assistance by way of short-term material & emergency aid for persons in necessitous circumstances which have been occasioned by natural disasters within the areas bounded by the municipal districts in which are represented by the clubs of District 201 V5. The Trust draws upon the generosity of the Lions Clubs within the District for donations which in turn allows the Trust to accumulate funds that can be released in case of a disaster. The Trust also has an award program known as the ‘Geoff Callander Award’. This is an award that a club’s donation can go towards and can be used by clubs to recognise the achievements of an individual.
