I was delighted to observe the enthusiasm of Lions who attended. Learning new skills and acquiring useful practical tips is of benefit to us as individuals and also benefit our Clubs when lessons learned are shared with fellow members and put into practice. It is vital that all Clubs foster new leaders and also encourage personal growth and development through Lions. It is rewarding to mentor inexperienced Lions by giving them responsibility for a project and by supporting them in standing for office. New club and district officers bring fresh ideas and energy and make Lions more enjoyable for us all. Congratulations to the Clubs and Zones that conducted Youth of the Year Quest, the students who entered and special mention to the schools and parents that supported this signature project. Every report I have received from Clubs has been positive and thanks are due to YOTY District Chairman Malcolm Campbell, Zone Chairmen and Club coordinators for the organisation of the quest. How could you not be inspired by our gifted youth? The District YOTY Final is on Sunday, 13th March at Tatura. The week beginning Monday, 21st March is Coins for Kids week. Have you approached a local primary or high school to invite them to partner with Lions in raising funds for children’s charities? It is not too late. Guidelines for your Club which are simple to follow and promotional material are on the District website. Bendigo Bank has declared this a great project. The more Clubs that do it the better. Why? It will mean we’ll help more kids and get more publicity as Lions for our community service. It also makes new connections with local schools and families and the wider community. It is a perfect opportunity to show we can cooperate within and between our Clubs and also right across Victoria by every Lions Club joining together in service on the same project in the same week. If your Club intends to join in but needs assistance, just email to [email protected] or phone 0403 125 186. Lions were out in force on Australia Day sizzling sausages, supporting parades, picnics and marches. We sure have a reputation to uphold and we do it with pride every year. It is a terrific idea to invite a prospective new member to assist at a sausage sizzle or other Club activity as an alternative to a regular Club meeting – unless you know for sure it will be a thoroughly well run and enjoyable meeting. Marysville Caravan &Holiday Park is open again. There is still much to do at the park, but we have some cabins and a fewpowered sites. Come and see how the

rebuild of this beautiful town is going.Give Christine or Ken a call 59633247www.marysvillecaravanpark.com.auinfo@marysvillecaravanpark.com.au

IN this issue I would like to revive an oldchestnut – the question of membership,or rather the question of youngermembership. In every Club I have visited, when the

talk comes to new members, I hear thesame cry,“we need younger members”.I daresay it is the same in your Club too,

but let us examine the difference between,“we need youngermembers”, and“we wantyounger members”.There can be no doubt that we need

younger members. Without them ourwhole organisation can, and will come to agrinding halt. The Lions Club, as we knowit today, will become a distant memory, and, whether we like to admit it or not, wewill have contributed to it’s downfall, bysimply putting things into the “too hardbasket”.Now let’s look at the other end of the

scale and examine the phrase “we wantyounger new members”. I have heard thiscomment made at numerous Clubs, andwhen I look around at the currentmembers of the Club, my immediatethought is, DOWE REALLY.Younger members have joined Lions

Clubs, but sorry to tell they, have perhapsnot stayed long with us. They bring to theClub, new thoughts, new values and newways of doing things, but all with theintention of serving the community. Thereare many young people who may havejoined their local Lions Club, only to findout that their input is really notencouraged and their ideas are greetedwith, “that didn’t work when we tried ittwo years ago”, or“we don’t live in that typeof community”. Even some new ideas maybe squashed before they have had thechance to see the light of day, because theestablished members of the Club do notunderstand the enthusiasm of youth, or donot want to understand it.What we are saying to these younger

people is “we want you to join our ClubBUT ON OUR TERMS.If Lions is to play an important part in

the development of any community, itmust reflect the image of a wholecommunity, and not just restrict theiractions to a minority of citizens who fitinto their age group. We must wholeheartedly embrace the

word, which can strike fear into everyheart.C H A N G E !

Zone 6, Jack’s parents Craig and Belindahave been able to convert a VolkswagenCaddy Maxi in order for Jack to travel inthe van in his wheelchair, rather than sit ina car seat. With him getting older and taller, it is

becoming increasingly difficult for Craigand Belinda to lift him in and out of the carand the Caddy is a wonderful addition totheir family. He is an older brother to four year old

Lucy and one of the cheekiest boys you canfind with a brilliant smile!! He loves goingfor a drive in the new car, especially withthe window down and the wind in his hair!Footnote: Jack’s mother is 33 years old

late November nearly 30 Lionsmembers attended the Lions

Children of Courage Award presentationat The Cerebral Palsy Education Centre(CPEC) in Glen Waverley. The eveningwas hosted by Ron Bromley from theVermont Lions Club.DG Anthony Stockdale and Lion Diane,

ZC Alan Fluck, District Chairman KarenYoung with Lions represented fromVermont, Box Hill, Waverley, Forest Hilland Wheelers Hill.Ron explained the Lions purpose of the

Children of Courage Awards and why it isimportant for Lions in the community. There were three CPEC children that

were selected to receive this mostprestigious Award:

Tristan ScanlonTRISTAN turned four in October. He is aplayful and happy boy who likes to listento stories – his favourite at the moment is“Where the Wild Things Are”. He likes toplay on his computer and is off to four 4year-old kinder He has worked really hardto get up on to his feet and learn to walk.

Alexander BrownALEX is another boy who loves books. Heis also four years of age and goes to hislocal day care centre where he loves toplay with his friends. He is really outgoingand loves to have a chat. He has a veryenthusiastic approach to everything hedoes – including learning to use hiswalker.

Ben AriarajahBEN is a really clever boy who is justfinishing his first year at four year-oldkinder. He loves kinder and has a go at all

the different activities. Ben has a great andparticular interest in all things “transport”– cars, trains, trams and aeroplanes. He isdoing a fantastic job with his walking. Hehas so much he has to think about and hereally keeps at it.A parent of each child thanked Lions

members for their wonderful support andencouragement that they have given toeach of the three winners, but importantlytheir commitment to CPEC. There were afew tears of joy from the parents along withsome from the Lions visitors.

From the Chairman and CEOGARRY Prigg welcomed the Lionsmembers along with the CPEC families andstaff. Garry emphasised how important theCPEC connection with the Lions is for thefamilies and staff. The costs of items likewalkers, second skins and communicationequipment are additional financialchallenges that families have to cope with- finding the

money, securing the right equipment andgetting it in time to maximise the use of it forthe child. The generous donations fromLions toward some of their equipment needsmeans that significant pressure is taken ofthe families and the child doesn’t haveunnecessary delays in getting their muchneeded items.Garry briefly talked about the plans for

the newly completed extension which isdesignated for the delivery of the Educationand Training courses for teachers andtherapists across Australia who work withdisabled children. By the end of 2011 hebelieved that CPEC would be delivering avariety of world-class courses.Garry thanked all of the Lions for their

wonderful support of CPEC and expressedhow much he personally valued the manywonderful friendships he has. He againthanked Ron for his valued support andlove of our children and staff.

Manager of Education ServicesCLAIRE Cotter who is the founder of theeducation services spoke of her gratitudetoward the many years of support byLions to assist her vision of providing thebest possible life opportunities forchildren with cerebral palsy and likedisabilities. She said that it would not bepossible if it were not for the skilled anddedicated therapists that are part of theCPEC Team.Claire mentioned that education and

training, transition to school for childrenand staff mentoring were such vitalcomponents of CPEC’s expansion to assistmore children with cerebral palsy. She mentioned her upcoming trip to

Hong Kong to attend a world conferenceon education services for children with CPand then a private tour of two educationcentres in mainland China. We completed the night with supper and

the chance for the Lions to meet and talk tothe CPEC families and staff.

WHEN Governor General Sir NinianStephen opened the Lions InternationalDiabetes Institute at Caulfield in 1985, itwas the culmination of years of effort byProfessor Paul Zimmet and 200 VictorianLions Clubs that supported the buildingfund. In the 1970’s Professor Zimmet established

the Department of Epidemiology andMetabolic Medicine at the Royal SouthernMemorial Hospital in Caulfield and in 1981the Department became the first WorldHealth Organisation Collaborating Centrefor Diabetes in the world. In the early years, the operations of the

centre were carried out from temporaryarmy huts and houses scattered over thehospital grounds; housing that was totallyinappropriate and inadequate for aninternationally recognised clinical andresearch unit.In October, 2010 the International

Diabetes Institute and Baker HeartFoundation merged to become Baker IDIand have moved into a world-class facilityat the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.Victorian Lions Foundation CouncillorsVeeda and David Oakley represented Lionsat the official opening of Baker IDI and areshown in front of one section of the“history wall.”This wall has been dedicated to the

history of the Institute and Lions featurestrongly. The Victorian Lions Foundationrecently donated $40,000 for the purchaseof 10 continuous glucose-monitoringsystems, which are loaned to patients on aweekly basis so that they can monitor theirblood glucose levels continuously in theirown home. The Institute urgently neededthese systems and Dr. Matt Cohen saidrecently that they have all been in usealmost continuously since the day theyreceived them.

Cakes/Puddings WrapJUST a short report from the ChristmasCake Coordinators’ meeting held in mid-January.A decision was made about the Header

Cards – each Club will receive three of eachand the District Cake Chairman will havesome spare ones if the Clubs need more.Next year the 1.5kg Cakes are going up

to $14.00 each, however there are still1.5kg cakes available at the 2009-2010prices, all Cakes are available until the endof March with payment.Cake sales are down by 10% this year; the

Cake Committee would like each Club toincrease sales by 12% next year if possible.V5 District is looking very good in third

position in Cake and Pudding sales – wesold 4,104 cartons. With the Pudding salesV5 District is in fourth position with 186cartons sold.I think we could beat the Q1 and Q3

Districts by trying to attract morecorporate sales this year.

INNOCENT people have always been thetragic victims of war long after the lastbomb has been dropped. No one knowshow many hundreds of thousands ofunexploded bombs and landmines thereare in the grounds of Laos, Vietnam andCambodia.Thirty-five years after the conflict, these

devices are still maiming and killingthousands of ordinary people. Visitors toLaos and Cambodia are constantly beingconfronted by hundreds of jobless localswith missing limbs because they hadaccidentally stepped on or ploughed intounexploded bombs while farming. In our four months of volunteer teaching

in Cambodia, Carol and I came acrossmany, many victims of landmines, someare beggars, but many are trying to make aliving as artists, street stall-holders andtourist guides. There is now a growingnumber of young victims who havecompleted high school education and areaspiring to become teachers. We met such agroup in the slum area not far from theglitzy establishments and restaurants ofSiem Reap, the city of the Angkor temples.Led by a young Khmer man named Bel,

advised by a charitable UK-based IranianJewish gentleman named Koosh, a group ofdisabled landmines victims have established a

small orphanage andare providing a basiceducation for theseorphans and some ofthe slum children inSiem Reap. They havecalled their legallyregistered organisation“Khmer IndependentLiving Team-Land-mines Victims” or KILT. The Lions Club of

Boronia has made asubstantial donationto pay for the training of two one-leggedKhmer teachers and to purchase pencilsand books for 500 children. Two otherindividual Australian couples have set upand funded monthly supply of rice andother school projects to assist thesepoverty-stricken but resilient people sotheir children will grow up with a goodfuture. Our time as volunteer teachers in

Cambodia was a most enriching and life-changing experience. Most of the overseasvolunteers who worked with us werecharitable individuals from Australia, theUK, New Zealand, USA and Denmark. Most are in their 20’s. Four of us are retireesin our 60’s.

All our English-language students whoare either studying at or have graduatedfrom the main Cambodian universitieswere enthusiastic and generous in spirit.Their age ranges from 18 to 50. Carol and I have learnt so much from our

Khmer students and many other Khmerpeople we have worked, lived andbefriended with. We are keenly lookingforward to doing another round ofvolunteer work in Cambodia in the nearfuture. Please contact me if you are looking for a

volunteer experience in Cambodia.

Boronia Lions – Supporting Cambodian Landmine Victims

THE Board of Lions Clubs International has adopted a recommendation to consolidate the functions of Membership,Extension and Retention into one team and separate Leadershipfrom M E & R and expand its functions. This separation of thefunctioning of Membership aims and Leadership aims is to bevertically integrated – inter-relationships from International levelto Multiple District level to District level.

At the District level there is to be a District LeadershipCoordinator who will oversee a small team to conduct trainingprograms, with the Second Vice Governor being the link to theDistrict Governor’s team. Twelve responsibilities have been identified for the District Leadership Team to achieve. To fulfilthese very demanding responsibilities, V5 needs a small numberof Lions to join this District team.

We need Lions who have the ability to organise and conduct arange of training sessions and who can identify and develop newleaders for the District. It is desirable – but not essential – thatthey have most of the following attributes:

• Qualifications in education or training;• Experience in training activities, eg as a teacher or lecturer;• Reasonably wide knowledge of Lions, eg been a member of

a DG’s Cabinet or higher;• Held a significant position of leadership, eg in Lions, other

organisations or in business. If you feel that you may be suitably qualified and/or experi-

enced and are able to contribute some of your time to DistrictV5, please contact the current V5 Leadership and TrainingChairman PDG Geoff Angus at 9874 4446 or email to [email protected]
