DID YOU KNOW?The North Carolina Korean War VeteransMemorial was created to ensure that futuregenerations remember and honor the pride anddedication of those who served, the legacy theycontinued, and the freedom they preserved. Thismemorial will ensure that the soldier’s sacrificewill always be remembered.

There were 788 members of the military fromN.C. who were killed or missing in action duringthe war. The N.C. Korean War VeteransMemorial is the only one of its kind in the state.

The main part of the memorial is encircled witha 188 ft. double wall planter with dwarf hollies. In the center is an eternal fountain in the shapeof the Korean Taeguek which is a part of theSouth Korean flag. Four 11 ft. granite pillars

surround the fountain and include the names of the 788 North Carolinians whomade the supreme sacrifice with their life. Granite benches face each of the fourpillars. Two life-sized statues of American soldiers are a part of the monument.

Chapter 265 of the N.C. Korean War Veteran’s Association which is headquar-tered in Indian Trail, NC were responsible for building the only memorial ofits kind in the state. $700.000, in cash donations and approximately $200.000in pro bono labor and materials came from several sources including thesales of memorial and honor pavers, local businesses, the Town of Mint Hill,Korean churches and Korean Business Associations, and the government ofSouth Korea.

Unlike World War II andVietnam, the Korean Wardid not get much mediaattention in the UnitedStates. The most famousrepresentation of the war inpopular culture is the tele-vision series “M*A*S*H,”which was set in a field hos-pital in South Korea. Theseries ran from 1972 until1983, and its final episodewas the most-watched intelevision history.Source: www.history.com

Creating new parks in a community takes a lot of time to go fromvision to reality. The Town of Mint Hill has already completed amajor step of protecting land from development and preserving itfor future generations by purchasing 27.5 acres located along BriefRoad. After receiving a grant of $335,000 from the Parks andRecreation Trust Fund (PARTF), the town matched the grant andpurchased the land for a final cost of $670,000. Although thedesign of the park facility has not been decided yet, there is astrong need for athletic fields for sports such as soccer, football, and lacrosse. The next steps include planning, surveying andequipping the property.

Beginning in 2008, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreationbegan acquiring land to build future parks. They currently ownover 22,000 acres of community and regional parks, nature pre-serve sites, and greenway connectors. Mecklenburg County isplanning to purchase 140 acres along Fairview Road to hold for afuture regional county park. It is located across from the OldeSycamore subdivision. Mecklenburg County Park and RecreationDepartment’s funding is already in place for the next few years.Planning and development of this land is not included in the 2015-2019 Capital Improvement Plan. It’s likely it could take up to 10years for residents of Mint Hill to have this land become anotherrecreational option, but at least the land will already be obtainedwhen it’s time to build. When the time comes for the site to bedeveloped, input will come from town officials and Mint Hillresidents as to what amenities will be needed and wanted.

On average, one law enforcement officeris killed in the line of duty somewhere inthe United States every 58 hours.

Many people take for granted that officers puttheir lives on the line every day. Beginning in 2013,Sgt. Michael Gainey, of the Mint Hill PoliceDepartment, has organized an annual 5K run andwalk called Soles 2 Remember to help raise awarenessand honor the brave men and women law enforce-ment officers who have lost their lives. The sergeantparticipated in a memorial for police officers in down-town Charlotte and felt like it would be nice to bringthat type of appreciation for our fallen heroes to MintHill as well

So far Mr. Gainey has been able to raise over$20,000 for the National Law Enforcement OfficersMemorial Fund (NLEOMF) with the Soles 2 Rememberevents. A number of local businesses have steppedup to sponsor and make generous donations

to Soles 2 Remember over the past couple ofyears. NLEOMF, a nonprofit organization, was found-

ed in 1984 and seeks to honor and remember theservice and sacrifice of American law enforcementofficers. The NLEOMF does not receive any tax-payer money to fund its day-to-day operations. The fund built and maintains the National LawEnforcement Officers Memorial located inWashington, D.C. Dedicated in 1991, the nation’smonument was built to honor the more than20,000 officers who have made the ultimate sac-rifice for the citizens they are sworn to serve andprotect since the first recorded death of a policeofficer in 1791.

The Mint Hill Police Department hosted the thirdannual Soles 2 Remember event in May, 2015 atPine Lake Country Club and drew over 200 partic-ipants, spectators and law enforcement officers. The Police Department is involved with the eventby assisting with traffic flow the day of the raceand donating a gift to the overall male and femalerunner.

The Soles 2 Remember 5K is held each year to raise funds for the National LawEnforcement Officers MemorialFund, which honors fallen lawenforcement officers.

With each year bigger than the last, Mr. Gainey says he usually spends about 5 months preparing for the race. His goal for the 2016 race is to raise more money for theNLEOMF and attract more participants for thewalk and run events. Gainey eventually wouldlike to have other local law enforcement agencies, such as the Matthews PoliceDepartment and the Charlotte-MecklenburgPolice Departments join in the event. If you are interested in participating, volun-

In 1701, Surveyor General and naturalist, John Lawson, venturedfrom Charleston inland to the wilds of the backcountry. He found “aparadise” of luxuriant savannas laced with pristine streams and edgedwith majestic forests. John Rogers was said to have been the first settler to the area

in 1732. By 1750, the fearless Scotch-Irish Presbyterians fromPennsylvania headed south in droves down the Indian Trading Paththat later became known as The Great Wagon Road and this commu-nity was called Clear Creek.

Many early communities adopted their names after the mid-nineteenth century railroad stops in their area. Clear Creek did nothave a rail stop so the name may have come from an assay officeestablished in the town during the local gold rush. Or perhaps theMint Hill name was derived from another tradition that says the post-master had an affinity for mint tea.

Churches were established as the center of the community andearly settlers placed a high premium on education. Churches were thefirst to provide classes and open local schoolhouses. Bain Academy,a privately owned institution, was established by John Bain in 1889 asa church school. Students came from all over the country to attendBain, one of the few high schools in the county. Originally chartered in 1899, the town fathers petitioned the state

in 1910 to cancel the town charter upon learning that state road workwould not be done inside of corporate limits. So it remained until

1971 when alarm over the approaching city of Charlotte annexationthreatened the community. The charter was resurrected to protectMint Hill from Charlotte’s sprawl. As Mint Hill entered into the new century, the town’s business and

industry expanded to meet the needs of the growing community.Agriculture and dairy farming continued to dominate the still ruralarea, but other industries emerged as crop farming became lessprofitable. The years have brought many changes to this once ruralfarming area. While opening its arms to diversity and growth, Mint Hillcontinues to retain its country charm. n

or 105 years, the Boy Scouts have beentraining boys to become responsible menand productive members of their communi-ties. In a world increasingly shaped by“online” experience rather than outdooractivities, the Boy Scouts continue to trans-form boys into men and make a unique andvital contribution to the health and qualityof life for communities across the nation.

Lots of eager kids across the countryparticipate in Boy Scouts when they areyoung, drawn by trips, outdoor adventuresand maybe even the marshmallows aroundthe campfire. There are countless opportu-nities that kids would not have chances totry if it were not for the Boy Scouts. An important value and tradition of the

Boys Scouts of America is helping thecommunity. Take a look around the MintHill area and you will see many improve-ments resulting from many Scout projects.Regular service work at food pantries, localmarathons and special projects offer manyopportunities for Scouts to give back totheir community. Scouts truly learn therewards of “making a difference” in ourcommunity.Scouting builds character and self-reliance

as well as promotes active citizenship.Just last year, numerous Scouts of the

Mecklenburg County Council collectedand sorted over 245,00 pounds of foodfor shelters and food banks in thecommunity. Scouts in the Mint Hill area belong to

the Etowah District of The MecklenburgCounty Council. In 2014, a total of 59young men in the Etowah District earnedthe distinction of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout is the highest rank possible

in the Boy Scouting program. Since it wasintroduced in 1911, more than 2.25million young men have achieved the BoyScouts of America’s highest rank.Eagle Scout is a big deal. For one thing,

it takes a lot of work to get the position.A scout requires passing all six levels ofScouts, earning 21 merit badges includingfirst aid and emergency preparedness, serving six months in a troop leadershipposition, spearhead a community serviceproject that they organize and managethemselves from start to finish, andpassing the Eagle Scout Board of Review. Living an eco-friendly lifestyle starts at home.According to the U.S. Department of Energy, res-idential use accounts for more than one-fifth ofthe nation’s total energy consumption. Adoptingan earth-first, energy saving mindset will let youmake adjustments around your home so thatyou can feel good about your family’s contribu-tions to protect the environment.

Green EnergyImproving your home’s energy efficiency is notonly good for the planet, it’s good for your wal-let. After all, wasted energy is money lost inmonthly utility bills. Numerous factors influ-ence a home’s energy efficiency, or lack thereof.Air leaks, outdated appliances or inefficientheating and cooling systems can all negativelyimpact your home’s energy usage.

Structural ImprovementsCorrecting any structural issues can go a longway toward making your home more efficient.Give your home a thorough inspection to iden-tify and repair leaks and cracks around windows, doors and duct work. Remember that poorlysealed attics and basements are also commonculprits of energy loss.

Appliances and Major SystemsUpgrading your appliances and temperaturecontrol systems also helps drive more efficientenergy use throughout the house. Look forENERGY STAR-certified products, which aredesigned to save energy without sacrificing onperformance. Where possible, make purchasesthat will perform double duty, such as high-effi-ciency washing machines that can save on bothenergy and water usage.

Fuel SourcesChoosing the right energy source can also helplessen your impact on the environment. Forexample, using propane-powered appliances inyour home can significantly reduce greenhousegas emissions. According to a recent studysponsored by the Propane Education & ResearchCouncil, propane-powered furnaces emit 73percent fewer greenhouse gases than electricity.Similarly, propane-powered storage waterheaters emit approximately 39 percent lessgreenhouse gas than electric storage models.

Shopping smart to incorporate high-efficiencyappliances and electronics into your home is justa first step. There are many other ways you canmake such products even more sustainable:

w Rely on LED light bulbs, which use a fractionof the energy and last significantly longer than traditional bulbs.

w Use light timers to turn off lights when they aren’t needed.

w Make a habit of powering off lights and other electronics when you leave the room.

w Set a programmable thermostat to adjusttemperatures when you’re away from home.
