All our actions and words will fail unless they are established in God’s love. If anything of ourselves and our self-love— whether for ego or church—is present in our preaching and showing forth of the word, our work will be useless and will not truly be God’s work. When Jesus speaks here of father, moth- er, and family, he is not saying that the family is not good or important. Indeed this is often where we first learn of and experience the love of God. But this disturbing image underlines the necessity of a sure foundation—commitment to and love of God as we find God in Jesus: his life and his words. Such love must stand behind all our efforts at evangelization. We are not concerned to increase our church membership, to get people to realize that Catho- lics are the best Christians, or to win over the world to the one true faith. We are opening our- selves to others in love because we have first been embraced by Jesus. What we have received we can- not help but share. We must trust in this love. We cannot use it to coerce or manipulate without se- riously distorting it into something that is not gospel. We can only live by it and trust in Je- sus. Priest Retirement The dedicated priests who served us in the past now deserve to live out their retirement years in dignity. Our parish has been assessed $<amount> for the priests’ retirement and benefits plans. This amount is slightly less than two times the regular weekend offertory. Please be as generous as you can in this second collection, which will be taken in our par-ish next weekend, September 14/15. Additional envelopes are available in the parish office.
Jubilación de Sacerdotes El Obispo Jugis ha escrito una carta a todos los feligreses en nuestra parroquia sobre la Colecta de la jubilación y los beneficios de los sacerdotes. 25th and 50th Wedding Anniversary Mass
IS THIS YOUR YEAR? Couples married 25 or 50 years this year will be honored at an Anniver-sary Mass held on Sunday, November 3, 2019 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, in Char-lotte. Faith Formation Registration has been extended until the end of September. Faith Formation Class will begin September 22, 2019 We will have both English and Spanish Faith Formation. Syveria Hauser will coordinate for the English commu-nity beginning with mass at 9:00 am followed by for-mation at 10:15and Leo Perez will coordinate for the Spanish community beginning at 11:45 am ending with mass at 2:00 pm If you have any questions please see Fr. My Dear Friends in Christ, The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.
Each year at this time, we have the opportunity to respond generously and with grateful hearts to the priests who serve us faithfully in the 92 parishes and missions throughout our diocese. With the annual collection to fund the priests’ retirement and benefits plans, we financially sustain these men who give their lives to preach the Gospel and teach the Catholic faith, to lead God’s people in love, and to celebrate the sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist.
Even through the years of their retirement, these priests will continue to
serve the people of our diocese. They will visit the sick in nursing homes and hospitals. They will go to our prisons, where they will counsel the inmates. Re-tired priests pray daily for the people of the diocese, offer Mass for the intentions of parishioners, and give of their time and talent to help with confessions and Sunday Masses in parishes throughout the diocese.
The annual diocesan collection to fund the priests’ retirement and bene-fits plans will be taken in all parishes the weekend of September 15, 2019. Our
goal for the priests’ retirement and benefits collection for 2019 is $1,920,000. We currently have 111 diocesan and religious order priests serving the faithful of
western North Carolina. Contributions from this collection will be added to pen-sion plans for these active priests currently serving in our diocese, as well as the
health benefits plan for our active diocesan priests when they retire.
You will find additional information about the retirement needs of our priests in the enclosed brochure and the August 30 issue of The Catholic News Herald. Please take the time to read them thoroughly, giving prayerful considera-tion as to how you can show your gratitude to the many priests who serve the peo-ple of our diocese so faithfully.
I ask you graciously to remember our active and retired priests in your daily prayers.
