What’s going on behind the scenes at St. Joes?

The Unites States Council of Catholic Bishops wrote a wonderful piece of work called “Co-workers in the Vineyard.” In it they present the image of all us being working

together with Christ to care for the vineyard. As a vine has many parts, it is also all connected together, if we care for our part of the vine, or creation the vine flourishes and

produces fruit. We all have God given gifts and talents that are meant to be shared in building up the kingdom of God.

This image comes to mind when I think of our parish. There are so many “Co-workers in

the Vineyard” doing so much, that it is inspirational. We want to encourage more co-workers to help our parish continue to thrive and grow. We all have gifts we an offer.

Through the Holy Spirit we are given the grace we need to do God’s work.

The following is some updates, news, and requests for help in our vineyard.

We have created two new ministries! Margaret Malm is the new leader for our Marriage ministry. Before the creation of this, we had no one to do wedding rehearsals and be with the couple throughout the whole process. After planning the marriage with the parish office, Margaret is the point of contact, for all questions and concerns. She does the rehearsal and is here the day of the wedding to assist the couple and clergy. As you can imagine this is a tremendous help to the church and the couple. Nancy Mulder is the new leader for Bereavement Ministry. Before the creation of this, after the family planned the funeral with the office, we usually didn’t have any contact with them until the funeral. Nance will now be there to help them with anything they need. Father and Nancy plan to make a home visit after they plan the funeral to see how they are doing and give support. Nancy will be here for viewings and funerals to support the grieving families and be the face of our caring parish. Vanessa Cruz has graciously agreed to take over altar server training. She is energetic and personable, she will make a great leader for the altar servers. She will help them with training, so that they feel confident in what they are doing, so they will have a positive experience. She will also plan activities to promote fellowship and fun. She has young children and will be able to relate to the servers and have fun! Nickie Gressmen, our former DRE has taken over training and scheduling for the EOM’s (Extra-Ordinary Ministers of Communion.) As you all know, Nickie did a wonderful job with CCD and we are grateful to have her talents being used again at the parish. Nickie really needs people at the 11:30 Mass to volunteer to help distribute Communion. Please call her if you are interested, 801-560-6042, we’re all in the vineyard together. Sid Cowand a longtime parishioner and Lector is has taken over training and scheduling for Lectors. Sid has many talents that we will be lucky to benefit from. Please take a moment to look at the 3rd page in the bulletin with all the ministry leaders and pray for them and all the ministers who do the work of the Lord here at our parish, we are truly blessed to have them and thank you to you all.

We kicked off our first Parish Advisory Council and Finance Meeting!

These councils are required by canon law and the diocese and we are thrilled to stat them up. We have some plans to start regularly publishing in the bulletin our income and expenses and sharing where we are at with that along with our building fund balance which is 1.5 million and how much we are bringing in for that. We

hope to create greater transparency and make it possible for everyone to know how we are doing financially. Michelle Kalleel, John Brandt, and Laurie Allen are very gifted and make an outstanding finance committee.

The pastoral staff is also on the council, Fr. Javier, Deacon Sunday, and Jeremy Castellano.

We will have our first liturgy meeting this coming Thursday and plan upcoming liturgies and event’s to promote our spiritual growth and participation. As one example, I want to not only have the two white books for All

Soul’s Day that we write the names of our dearly departed, but also have an altar of the deceased, perhaps in the Gathering Space where we can put pictures and mementos of our loved ones. It’s an idea we will discuss, along with blessing of the animals and anything you can think of where we come together to glorify God and his

kingdom.

We had our first Parish Advisory Council Meeting this past Thursday I want to take this opportunity to thank every member of the council. It is absolutely amazing what can be accomplished when a group of people get together to rationally and respectfully talk about issues. The spirit of the council was the best I’ve every experienced in a parish council. Everyone's agenda was only what is best for the parish. You have a great group of people representing you and looking out only for what’s best for the parish and it’s parishioners. Thank you to the parish council. Father Javier Deacon Sunday Espinoza DRE: Melissa Castellano Pastoral Associate: Jeremy Castellano Michelle Kaleel: Staff Accountant/Head of Finance Committee (Finance Committee also includes Laurie

Allen & John Brandt) Food Pantry: Dennis Bramble Women’s Group: Jan Meigs Men’s Group: Dave McKay Seniors Group: Gerard Collet: Knights of Columbus: Mike Anglin Susan Espinoza: Lay Ecclesial Minister/Adult Education Agnes Yoon: Music Ministry Nancy Mulder: Bereavement Ministry Margaret Malm: Wedding ministry Jim Steffon: Homebound Communion Rodney Mulder: Ushers/security Tim Cosgrove: Social Justice Ministry Tricia Johnson: Sacristan/environment

For those of you who may not know, we’ve implemented a dress code for ministers while they are serving at Mass. I’ve been asked if I could talk about it.. The Eucharist is the “Source and Summit” of our

Catholic Faith. During Mass we are literally attending the Lord’s banquet where we believe He is fully present with us. For that time during Mass when we might be thinking of other things, writing our collection check (please don’t stop that (: ,talking to someone, etc., we need to stop and perhaps reflect that we are having Jesus’ Last Supper with him every Sunday. He is present and our actions, participation and state of mind

reflect how we respond to Jesus in the most intimate way possible. In Mass we re-enact the Lord’s banquets with all the angels, saints and those in Heaven. It is the most solemn and reverent time that exists. Us faithful Catholic including myself might take this for granted and it become just a habit coming to Mass, sing, kneel,

get the host, go home. But I find if I am honest with myself, reflect on what we believe, that I must make it the most special time of the week and treat it as it’s meant to be, I’m eating and drinking the Lord’s Body and Blood, with Him fully present in communion with him and my community. It’s still such an awe inspiring

mystery that I don’t know if I can ever fully comprehend it.

This is what the church teaches and hopefully we believe, keeping this in mind, we need to do everything possible to give as much reverence at Mass as possible. The reverence deserved goes far beyond what you

might do at a wedding. Using the wedding example, I think most of us agree that for a formal wedding reception we would not wear a Hawaiian t-shirt and flip flops, If Mass transcends all of this, then why would we do this when sitting at a table with our Lord and Savior? This is where we are coming from in creating a dress

code for active ministers who are participating in Mass, not only for the above reasons, but also, Hawaiian shirts, tank tops, flip flops, neon orange colored golf shirts, etc., really take people out of the moment and

distract them when they should be communing with God, but see ministers standing around the altar they may be distracting. Not all will agree with our reasoning, and that's expected and okay, but regardless we feel it’s appropriate to have a minster dress code that applies to all ministers serving, Lectors, EOM’s, Altar Servers,

Ushers, and Choir Members.

Dress that’s not appropriate when serving as a minister at Mas: shorts, tank-tops, jeans, sandals for men or women (this includes high-heels, “dress” sandals, etc.,) any type of athletic shoes, shirts with logos, distracting prints or colors, i.e. Hawaiian shirts, neon-golf shirts, etc. sunglasses, winter coats, or hats while serving.

Acceptable dress: dress pants for men or women, Dockers, etc. modest formal type dresses for women (no t-shirt type

dresses, sleeveless, etc.) Shoes for both men, women, and children, must be closed toed dress shoes.

If you have any ideas for liturgy (church services), or for the parish council, finance committee, everyone’s input is welcome and encouraged. Please email your ideas to [email protected] and they will be

forwarded to the appropriate committee. Please understand if we can not personally email you back and respond, but know it will get brought up in a meeting.

What is a Jubilee Year of Mercy?

According to the Holy See, the origin of the Christian Jubilee goes back to Old Testament times. The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people (Lev 25:10-14). The trumpet with which this particular year was announced was a goat's horn, called Yobel in Hebrew, and the origin of the word "jubilee." The celebration of this year also included the restitution of land to the original owners, the remission of debts, the liberation of slaves, and "rest" for the land, which was left fallow. In the New Testament, Jesus presents himself as the One who brings the old Jubilee to completion, because he has come to "preach the year of the Lord's favor" (Lk 4:18-19; see also Is 61:1-2). The Holy See says that, in the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year or Jubilee is a great religious event, held roughly every 25 years, for the forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to sin. The Christian Jubilee tradition began with Pope Boniface VIII in 1300. Since that time, the Church has celebrated 26 ordinary and three extraordinary Jubilee Years. A Jubilee is a year of reconciliation between adversaries, conversion, and a time to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Consequently, it is a time of

solidarity, hope, justice, and commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. A Jubilee Year is, above all, the year of Christ, who brings life and grace to humanity ("What is a Holy Year?" www.vatican.va).

Plenary indulgences aplenty

Like all previous Jubilees, the Jubilee Year of Mercy features a very special plenary indulgence (the complete remission of all temporal punishment due to sin). I wish that the Jubilee Indulgence may reach each one as a genuine experience of God's mercy, which comes to meet each person in the Face of the Father who welcomes and forgives, forgetting completely the sin committed. – Pope Francis, Letter to Archbishop Rino Fisichella, Sept. 1, 2015. There have been many Jubilee Years – 26 ordinary Jubilees and three extraordinary – and each has featured a special plenary indulgence. This time around, Pope Francis is seeking to make the indulgence as widely available as possible. In the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, a Holy Door is to be opened in every cathedral around the world, as well as in particular shrines, such as the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where large numbers of pilgrims come to honor the mercy of God. Even though we can only obtain one plenary indulgence a day, if you perform the required actions for other plenary indulgences on the same day, you can still obtain multiple partial indulgences. To receive the Jubilee Year indulgence, you must fulfill the usual conditions, (specified below) and perform the indulgenced act: passing through a designated Holy Door during the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy (between Dec. 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and Nov. 20, 2016, the Solemnity of Christ the King) or performing one of the corporal or spiritual works of mercy. As for the sick and the elderly, the Holy Father says, "For them it will be of great help to live their sickness and suffering as an experience of closeness to the Lord who in the mystery of his Passion, death and Resurrection indicates the royal road which gives meaning to pain and loneliness. Living with faith and joyful hope this moment of trial, receiving communion or attending Holy Mass and community prayer, even through the various means of communication, will be for them the means of obtaining the Jubilee Indulgence."

For the imprisoned, the Holy Father says, "They may obtain the Indulgence in the chapels of the prisons. May the gesture of directing their thought and prayer to the Father each time they cross the threshold of their cell signify for them their passage through the Holy Door, because the mercy of God is able to transform hearts, and is also able to transform bars into an experience of freedom." You may receive the plenary indulgence yourself, or offer it for a person in purgatory. Please see PrayForSouls.org/indulgence1 to read the Holy Father's letter on the Jubilee Year indulgence.

To receive a plenary indulgence

To refresh everyone's memories, here are the normal conditions for receiving a plenary indulgence: It is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed.

A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace:

have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; have sacramentally confessed their sins; receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but

for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); and pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff.

It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an Our Father and a Hail Mary are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence.

For the sake of those legitimately impeded, confessors can commute both the work prescribed and the conditions required (except, obviously, detachment from even venial sin).

Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth.

– Adapted from the decree on the plenary indulgence for the 2000 Jubilee Year.
