40 days for Life is an internationally coordinated 40-day campaign that aims to end abortion locally

through community outreach, peaceful vigils in front of abortion businesses, and prayer and fasting.

Prayer keeps us rooted in the fact that it is our desire to carry out God's will.

Fasting is a sacrifice that helps us reach beyond our own limitations with God's help.

Since we are focusing on these last two during Lent, your prayer through these two offerings could be

for the unborn, those aborted, and the mothers and fathers who feel they have to choose this outcome.

Devotional for Day 19, Sunday, March 15

Rev. Rob Schenck, President, Faith and Action

Intention: We pray for a renewal of our zeal

to offer generous help to the unborn and their families.

40daysforlife.org Prayer: God, forgive us when we try to explain away the obligation we have to help others who need

help. Enable us to not devalue them because they are in the circumstance that they are in, but to see

them for what they are, those, who like us, were formed by your hand in their mother’s womb. Amen.

Reflecting on the Readings

FIRST READING: Exodus 17:3-7

In the first reading, the Israelites ask: “Is the Lord with us or not?” Have you ever had

that feeling? If so, what helped you deal with it? If not, what enables you to always feel that God is with

you?

SECOND READING: Romans 5:1-2, 5-8

In the second reading, Paul reminds us that Jesus died for us while we were still sinners. Yet sometimes

we may wonder if God loves us. Why is this? What can help us to always be aware of God’s uncondi-

tional love for us?

GOSPEL: John 4:4-42

The Gospel tells us that many people come to believe in Jesus because of the witness of the Samaritan

woman. This is a story of a woman coming to faith in Jesus, the Living Water, and leading others to

place their trust in him. What made her witness so powerful? How easy or how hard is it for you to

share your faith with others? Name one thing today’s Gospel says to us that we disciples of Jesus need

to heed and act on. AscensionCatholic.net

A Lenten Question Q. Are there exemptions other than for age from the requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday?

A. Those excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals

suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common

sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting. USCCB.org

Your Will, St. Joseph Parish and You

One important way to help St. Joseph Parish is to remember the parish in your will. The church’s mission throughout history has been aided, boosted, and propped up by people leaving a portion of their estate to the church. It is another way to prac-tice your stewardship of treasure, in addition to the Sunday offering. Nowadays it is common for Catholic funeral notices to mention a suggested dona-tion to hospice, or to some other medical institution or society. While this is a good and noble thing, unfortunately, the church is not mentioned. In fact, the church is usually not remembered by the friends or family of the deceased, nor is it mentioned in their last will and testament. I know that many of you have other charities that are worthy of leaving money to, including, of course, your children and grandchildren! Because the need of the church is great, I would ask you prayerfully to consider counting the church as one of your children in your estate. Maybe some of you could do even more. Again, please prayerfully consider this, and, if it seems right and just to you, please change your will to remember the church. For questions or assistance, please call the parish office at (513) 941-3661. Yours in Christ,

Fr. Andrew Umberg
