Stamford
Welcome to Stamford, a coastal community along Connecticut’s shoreline.
Stamford is a city of approximately 120,000 residents, consisting of 37.3
square miles. Stamford is 35 miles northeast of New York City and 40 miles
southwest of New Haven. Connecticut’s capital is Hartford, which is 90 miles to the north.
Stamford lies within Fairfield County and borders the Connecticut towns of Greenwich,
New Canaan and Darien, along with Pound Ridge in New York state.
4
5
In the early part of the 20th century, Stamford progressed from a factory hub to a research center, and in the last quarter of the century, to the country’s third-largest corporate head-quarters community. Today, we are the fourth largest city in Connecticut and our eco-nomic growth has soared, as we have become known as a financial center. We have also been ranked as the eighth largest business center in the United States.
In the past six years, we have seen incredible growth; added to our list of prestigious corporate headquarters is the North American headquarters of the Union Bank of Swit-zerland (UBS), with approxi-mately 3,000 employees in Stamford, and the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), where approxi-mately 2,300 people work.
We are a city with many facets, as we offer both urban and suburban elements, ranging from the multi-acre homes in wooded North Stamford, to our splendid corporate downtown center, to the beautiful shoreline areas that envelop our parks and beaches. The mayor is implement-ing one of the city’s major projects, which will vastly improve the waterfront area along our Mill River—a body of water that traverses the downtown.
The central core of our city—Stamford Downtown—offers a wide assortment of entertainment, fine restaurants, magnifi-cent retail stores, a shopping mall, and a variety of interesting attractions and places that create an atmosphere of fun and ex-citement for people of all ages and preferences. Our downtown is also home to the University of Connecticut’s Stamford Cam-pus, which bustles with students coming and going at all times of the day and evening.
Stamford’s proximity to New York City allows those who live and work here ample opportunity to avail themselves of its cultural, retail, employment and other resources. Metro North Railroad provides express train service to New York’s Grand Central Station in approximately 45 minutes. The Stam-
ford Transportation Center (our railroad station) is located in Stamford’s downtown business district, near I-95, which is Con-necticut’s interstate highway. Another major highway is Route
15, the Merritt Parkway, which crosses Stamford and merges into New York’s Hutchinson River Parkway.
Stamford is proud of its public schools and its multicultural diversity, which remains our greatest strength.
A School Resource Officer Program assigns police officers to all high schools and middle schools to fur-ther assist with education and instruction of students and to facilitate communications between young people and the police. We have been recognized as one of 10 school districts across the country to be
named a model of ex-emplary education re-form by the National Commission on Teach-ing and America’s Fu-ture. Some 79 percent of all high school grad-uates pursue higher education.
Stamford is one of the first cities in the country, and the first in the state of Con-necticut, to implement a School Readiness
Program, which offers all 4-year-olds in our community the opportunity to receive pre-kindergarten education. Our program was cited as a model for the rest of the nation by former U.S. Secretary of Education, Richard Riley. In addition, this initiative received an outstanding achievement award from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and a designation
of Stamford as one of the most livable cities in America.Stamford’s coastal location and vast amount of open park
space are integral parts of our community and create a beautiful atmosphere, which distinguishes us from a “big” city ambiance. To further preserve this unique characteristic, the mayor has es-tablished a Parks Master Plan, which will continue to maintain our recreational areas and provide the citizens of Stamford an exquisite place in which to live and work.
Stamford continues to significantly outperform other cities, due in part to our growing economy, our highly educated work-force and overall pro-business climate.

Surrounding Areas
Greenwich is an entity unto itself. On one hand, it is reminiscent of the way things used to be—a comfort-able place where policemen (and women) direct traffic, offer di-rections and en-sure that pedes-trians cross the Avenue safely. The people are
friendly and, most times, it’s vir-tually impossible to walk anywhere downtown without
bumping into someone you know. But Greenwich is neither old-fashioned nor small. Its facili-
ties are state-of-the-art. The schools are top notch. The parks are lovely. There is plenty of sailing, golf, tennis and swimming. The neighborhoods are safe, and the terrain is beautiful and diverse.
While Greenwich is certainly not a bedroom town, you can’t really define Greenwich without accounting for its proximity to New York City. It is a sophisticated place to be, offering a diverse array of culture, nature, food, entertainment and shopping. Population: 61,171 (2010 Census)
Darien is an attractive blend of comfortable seaside living and easy travel to the corporate world, just 50 minutes from the hub of Manhattan—making it a popular choice for executives and professionals and their families. Settled in 1645 and for-mally incorporated in 1820, the seclusion and beauty of Darien were well-kept secrets until 1920 when affluent artists and writers discovered the natural splendor of this coastal site. Since then, Darien has grown into a prosperous commu-nity, rich with history and enjoyment, and dedicated to the promotion of education, cultural/social development and conservation of natural resources. Population: 20,731 (2010 Census)
New Canaan, located in the southwest corner of Fair-field County, holds the enviable moniker of “The Next Station to Heaven”—a well-deserved title. This inviting town offers a breathtaking natural setting for comfortable living, superb so-cial and cultural amenities and convenient travel to the metro-politan centers.

Sprawling estates showcase large country houses surround-ed by the delightful stone walls of traditional New England. A wealth of architectural choices include deluxe condomini-ums, streamlined contemporaries and charming, early-Colonial homes. The village features the select merchandise of a group of specialty shops and exquisite restaurants.
New Canaan is proud of the solid academic education avail-able to its children. Four well-appointed recreation centers, a number of beautifully landscaped public parks, ball fields, tennis courts and skating ponds keep residents active through-out the seasons. In addi-tion, a private country club hosts a variety of so-cial events and maintains a challenging course for golfers, and a nature cen-ter offers everything from sheep shearing to maple syruping. Population: 19,736 (2010 Census)
Norwalk is the sixth-largest city in the state of Con-necticut with a pop-ulation of approxi-mately 85,597. It is located in southwest-ern Connecticut, on Long Island Sound, just a one-hour drive from New York City.
A host of agen-cies and organiza-tions are devoted to a quality life for all Norwalk residents and visitors. Major employers, diversified housing and excellent education-al opportunities attract people from all over the United States to live and work in Norwalk and the surrounding communities. The presence of many major employers based in Norwalk generates job opportunities and en-hances economic security for all the communities in the Greater Norwalk area.
Norwalk offers numerous shopping, dining and recreational opportunities in East Norwalk, historic South Norwalk (SoNo), Rowayton, Silvermine, Cranbury, Norwalk Center and major centers on U.S. Route 1 and Route 7. Over the past 10 years, the community has undergone a revitalization that incorporates historical preservation and beautification, the creation of major
office complexes, the improvement of Norwalk’s extensive wa-terfront area, as well as the development of new retail, cultural and recreational offerings.
Wilton is a highly desirable residential community with fine open lands (a testament to its colonial farming roots), beautiful historic architecture and a wealth of excellent services. Its two
railroad stations and convenient travel to the business and commercial centers of Stamford, New York City and White Plains make Wilton particularly attractive. Population: 18,064 (2010 Census)
Westport’s unique character can be traced to the town’s roots in the Native American tribes who fre-quented the area—the five original “Bankside Farm-
ers” who settled what is now known as Green’s Farms in 1648, and an-other group of settlers who followed: the Co-leys, the Wheelers, the Bennetts, the Jennings, the Burrs, and many more who came after them to shape this na-tionally known town.
Today’s residents treasure Westport Country Play-house and Compo Beach on Long Island Sound. Population: 26,343 (2010 Census)
Fairfield is ideally positioned for elegant liv-ing, an abundance of leisure activities and convenient travel to metropolitan areas. Situated on Long Island Sound, Fair-field’s 6-mile coast-line and pristine beaches are a sum-mer playground for water-sport enthusi-asts and sun worship-
pers alike. Overlooking the Mill River, several beautifully land-scaped parks offer the tranquil pleasures of picnicking, bicycling, walking and nature study. Residents may swim in freshwater at Lake Mohegan and, in the winter months, ice skating is enjoyed at Owen Fish Park, Sturges Pond and Gould Manor Park. Profes-sionals will find Hartford and Manhattan equidistant from this captivating atmosphere. Population: 59,404 (2010 Census)

You may not be familiar with all your choices for senior living nearby—or what, if anything, sets them apart from one another. Good
news! At Edgehill, the community setting the standard for Lifecare retirement living in the Stamford/Greenwich area, we can help you and your loved ones make an informed decision that leaves you feeling secure.
Retirement Communities: What Are My Options? While continuing care retirement commu-nities (CCRCs) are designed to provide ful-filling housing and lifestyle options along with a long-term plan for future care, their offerings vary. Three types of continuing care retirement communities exist. Con-sider the following summary of each for the facts you need to know.
8LifecareA community like Edgehill offers full access to hous-ing, services and amenities, plus complete on-site long-term care with health care tax deductions. A one-time entrance fee and predictable monthly fee guarantees lifetime occupancy—and care is provided at predeter-mined, substantially discounted rates for as long as needed.
8Modified CCRCHealth care services may be available on- or off-site, with two monthly fees incurred if couples require differ-ent levels of care. Care is typically provided in one of two ways: either a limited number of free days included as part of the entrance fee with additional care at mar-ket rates; or an ongoing, minimally discounted rate for care.
8Fee-for-ServiceHealth care services are available at market rates charged on a per-service basis. Any additional costs for health care would be additional to the resident’s monthly fee.
The Edgehill AdvantageIn the Stamford/Greenwich area, only Edgehill offers you and your loved ones protection from the rising costs of long-term health care—currently averaging $425* per day for skilled nurs-ing—with financial predictability, 90 percent refundability of the entrance fee and care that is guaranteed for life. It is called the Edgehill Advantage—and no one else in this area has it. Through
the Edgehill Advantage, residents have unlimited lifetime access to assisted living and skilled nursing care—at predictable, sub-stantially reduced rates, regardless of the level of care needed—through payment of a one-time 90 percent refundable entrance fee and a monthly service fee.
In addition, substantial tax deductions are available as a pre-paid medical expense at a Lifecare community—even while living independently. At Edgehill, it is a benefit that is easy to enjoy—residents receive a summary each year, indicating the percentage of fees allowed for deduction. Financial security is only the beginning of the Edgehill Advantage, and why families agree that Edgehill is unlike any other option available.
Families AgreeIt is easy to see why Edgehill is the smart choice for families today. Once you discover all Edgehill has to offer: greater inde-pendence and freedom, convenient opportunities for healthier living, a beautiful campus setting close to everything and lasting peace of mind. That is why Edgehill remains Southern Fairfield County’s choice for luxury Lifecare retirement living—and why you have to see it for yourself.
Now See for YourselfLearn more about your retirement community options in this area—and all the details of the Edgehill Advantage that could make a real difference for you and those you love.
