FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK… Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, On this first Sunday of Lent, the Gospel is the story of Jesus fasting and praying in the desert in preparation for his time of ministry. When he comes to the end of his forty days in the wilderness, he is approached by Satan who shows him the allure of earthly and supernatural pleasures and powers. Though tempted to the extreme, Jesus does not yield. Instead, he resists the devil with inspired truth: “One does not live by bread alone...You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve...You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” These are three teachings that can be of great help to us in time of temptation. The Lenten Season is a good time to remind ourselves that Jesus died and rose to give us the grace and strength we need to overcome temptation and sin and to open ourselves to the Father’s love. During these forty days of Lent, let us be vigilant in the midst of temptation and train our bodies and minds to follow the path of virtue, the path that ultimately leads to true happiness and life eternal. God’s Blessings, Fr.

PARISH LIBRARY NEWS NEW additions to our library for Lenten inspiration: DVD - Origin of the True Cross – Come to Italy where Bob and Penny Lord track the Tradition surrounding the origin of the Cross, going back to Adam and the Garden of Eden. Follow St. Helena in her quest to find the true Cross and bring it back to Rome. Learn about the Miracle of the Cross which brought about the conversion of Constantine and the release of the Church from slavery. DVD - Miracle of the Cross & Our Lady of Good Counsel – This film takes you to Genazzano, a small town just outside Rome where a voyage of a fresco of Our Lady of Good Counsel traveled from Albania across the Adriatic Sea to this little hamlet, and rested in a broken-down church, which has since become a major shrine. The fresco has inexplicably remained suspended in the air close to the wall of the chapel in the church of Our Lady of Good Counsel for over five hundred years! See the Miraculous fresco of Our Lord Jesus which bled when attacked by a sword; see the sword, which bent miraculously and remained that way. The True Icon - From the Shroud of Turin to the Veil of Manoppello – When the image on the Veil of Manoppello is laid over the image of the face on the Shroud of Turin, the two images match perfectly. It is the same face! Drawing upon his years in Jerusalem Paul Badde gives a riveting account of these two images.

THANK YOU to: Dr. Gerald Fleer, Dr. Nestor and Bien Alabarca, Greg and Jean Dexter, Irene and Budd Humphrey, In Memory of Grace Weis, Dr. Mark and Ann Pienkos, Anonymous in the Spirit of Faith and Hope and Love, and several other anonymous donors. Another BIG THANK YOU to Joe Cardiff for spending countless hours placing the stickers on the books so that recipients would be reminded that “We are family” and together we can make a difference.
