from the pastThe origin of the name Tintagelprobably comes from "Dindagell" aCornish word meaning "fort on theconstriction" referring to the fort orcastle on the headland. Tintagelwas the name of the whole parish, the village being known as Trevenauntil the Victorian period. "Tre" is aCornish word meaning settlementor farmstead.

This picture shows what is now King

Arthurs Great hall, but then aprivate house, known as TrevenaHouse, owned by Sir Arthur andLady Hayter who once entertainedW.E. Gladstone, the great PrimeMinister. It was built by DouglasCook and included 19 bedrooms, but no bathroom!

Farming has been the mainstay ofthe population's working lifethrough the ages. But intermittentlyother activities flourished, albeitbriefly. Slate was a valuablecommodity, providing buildingstone and roofing for localbuildings as well as being exportedfar and wide.

From the harbour fishing boatsplied their trade on the dangerouswaters of the north Cornish coast.Vessels would beach at TintagelCove, loading and unloadinggoods for sale and export to portsalong the Bristol Channel. It is

known that smuggling was rifealong this notorious coast, andmany wrecks furnished localhouseholds with opportune goodswashed up in the aftermath.

To attract modern visitors thevillage needed to smarten itself upand throw off the "tatty" monikeronce attributed to it in sections of

the travel press. This was achievedby a regeneration project during2003 and 2004 costing over 4million.

Now, as you stroll down the newlylaid granite pavements and lookat the clear blue sky overhead, your view is no longer interruptedby what was once a cat's cradleof overhead wires. You can whileaway some time sitting on oakseats in peaceful Trevena Square, once a busy bus station, now anattractive village centre withmodern toilet facilities and itsnewly installed granite cross.

An Outline of Arthurs life is given byGeoffrey of Monmouth in TheHistory of the Kings of Britain. Howmuch of this life was fact or fiction isuncertain. He tells Arthur was theson of Uther Pendragon. Hisaccount makes Tintagel the

Fortress of King Gorlois, husband ofYgerna. She was the object ofUther Pendragons desires. Merlintransformed Uther so he looked likeGorlois. This enabled him to trickYgerna into making love to him,

thus Arthur was conceived atTintagel. The child was given toEctor to be raised in secret. AfterUthers death there was no King

ruling all England. Merlin placed aSword in the Stone saying thatwhoever drew it out would be King.Arthur did so and Merlin had himcrowned King. He marriedGuinevere whose father gave himthe Round Table as a dowry. Thiswas followed by a wonderful ageof Rule and Chivalry. However, his

knight Lancelot becameinfatuated with Guinevere. The Quest for the Holy Grail began

and Lancelots intrigue with theQueen came to light. Lancelotfled and Guinevere was sentencedto death. Lancelot rescued herand took her to France. Arthurwent to war against Lancelotleaving Mordred in charge.Mordred rebelled so Arthurreturned to Britain. This led to

Arthurs last Battle where he killedMordred, but was gravelywounded himself. He was carriedoff by barge to the Vale of Avalon.

St. Materianas Church was builtalmost entirely as it appears today,in its cruciform shape of nave, chancel and transepts, between

the years 1080 and 1150, in thetime of the first Norman earls ofCornwall, Robert of Mortain and hisson William. They held Tintagel withother lands of the earldom, andbuilt their castle at Bossiney, somesmall remains of which may still beseen. They were followed by EarlReginald, a son of Henry 1, whoseems to have built the first castleon the island and probably finishedthe building of the Church.

It seems likely that the presentChurch was built on the site of anoratory served in Celtic days bythe monks of Minster and later

replaced by a Saxon-style building. This would mean that Christianworship has been continuallyoffered on this spot for 1400 years. There is a good view of CastleIsland from the Church.

nearly a mile inland to St. NectansKieve.

The rivers erosive power hasproduced a spectacular scene ofcrags, smooth rocks, gullies, cataracts and deep chasms.

The shelter offered by the valley isa welcome refuge for wildlife andthe stream plays host to dippersand grey wagtails. It is said thatthe 60s hit song Sunshine of YourLove performed by Cream andJimi Hendrix, was supposedlypenned here!

Further up the valley, remarkablywell preserved maze carvings arefound on a rock face behind theruins of an old mill. Similar carvingsfound in Crete date back 4000years, but these were only firstmentioned in 1948.

Trebarwith StrandTrebarwith Strand - With its vastcliffs, dark caves and fine goldensand, this was once the centre ofthe local slate trade, from where

    quarried stone was exported.

In the 1800s, this natural cove grewin importance mainly due toextensive quarrying along the cliffsand inland at the Prince of Walesquarry. It was so much easier toextract slate on the coast. Not onlywas it good quality, but there wereno problems with waste material. Itwas just thrown into the sea.

Transport was made easy by simplyshipping the slate out directly fromthe quarry site via Port William, asmall harbour at the south end ofthe cove. Today the abandonedquarries leave a legacy of richindustrial heritage that is clearlyvisible from the coast pathbetween Trebarwith Strand and

    Tintagel.

Today, Trebarwiths beautifulbeach, known as the Strand, is very

popular with locals and holidaymakers. Frequent strong winds offthe Atlantic Ocean make forexcellent surfing. The clean sand,

warm pools and climbing rocksmake it a great place for children. The beach is tidal and at low tide itextends for almost a mile. At hightide the water covers the beachcompletely for about two hours. It issafer to bathe after low tide, whenthe tide is coming in. During holidayseasons lifeguards are present toensure the safety of bathers.

BudeThere are two large sandy beacheswhich have been voted the 7thbest Beach Destination by TripAdvisor for 2012. They are perfect

for the family holiday with a varietyof beach activities available.

The Bude canal offers a lovely and

very different holiday experience. The canal regeneration project wascompleted in 2008. From the lockgates at Summerleaze Beach, itnow links the town to opencountryside as far as Helebridge, near Marhamchurch. The canalwas fully dredged and the

towpaths are now flat and widermaking them suitable forwheelchairs and pushchairs.

There is also a network of wellsignposted walking routes throughand over marshes that have beendeveloped to attract anabundance of wildlife. Otters areoften spotted and there is a birdhide overlooking the nature reservefrom the towpath.

The walk from Bude to Helebridge ismost enjoyable. The towpathcontinues a little further ending atThe Weir, a very pleasant caf and

bistro where refreshments can beenjoyed whilst overlooking a lakeand the resident wild life. There isalso a childrens play area.

Safe motoringPlease remember, going on holiday is probably thelongest journey you will do in a year.

Join a motoring organisation. If you break down on

route recovery to your home can be hugelyexpensive.

Have your car serviced by a reputable garage. GoodGarage Scheme members are subject to a strictmonitoring code and can be trusted to do a good

    job.

Always check your oil, coolant and screen washlevels, tyre pressures and lights before your journey.

Check the condition of your tyres. On motorwayswhen driving at high speeds your tyres work hard. Many breakdowns and some accidents are causedby tyre problems. Check your tyres for wear anddamage. Pressures will need to be increased whenloaded or towing.

If you are towing make sure the tyres on your trailer or

caravan are fully checked as above.

If you have a problem with your car coming down onholiday, have it checked as soon as possible.Problems rarely disappear on their own.

Make sure if you have a roof rack that both it and theload are secure. We can have very high winds inCornwall.

When using cycle racks, make sure that both the rackand the cycles do not obscure the lights or numberplate.

Keep your petrol tank well filled. Getting stuck downquiet narrow lanes in the middle of the countryside isnot much fun.

Take your time! Cornwall is rural and has many narrowlanes with blind bends. Always anticipate the

possibility that just around that narrow corner theremay be a wide farm vehicle that cannot stop quickly. There may also be a family enjoying a walk or cyclistson the road. Enjoy a leisurely drive and stay safe.
