Continuing on the previous weekend’s message on keeping our kids engaged positively and spiritually focused during this summer vacation, it is worth considering our priorities and sidelined commitments.

It is really admirable that we carefully plan vacation activities very appealing to them that will keep our kids occupied and enlightened as well. Here is the challenge. At baptism we all made the promise to raise our children in faith and according to the teachings of the Catholic Church. This implies that we teach them our faith values and doctrines at appropriate age, we train them to pray every day and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, we help them to develop a personal spiritual relationship with Him in a prayerful attitude, we help them to have devotional, prayerful and maternal relationship with Blessed Mother, mother of Jesus and our Mother, and intercessory dependence on all our saints in the church, and develop the habit of participating in the weekly liturgical celebrations, especially the Holy Mass, on a regular basis. In short we agree to raise our children for God not for the world. Question is are we true to this. Many a time it looks like we forget about it or we did not mean it.

If we carefully review our vacation plan, it reveals where our loyalties are. We will do everything that the world is offering for the kids. We make sure our children meet or exceed the performance expectations set by the world and they acquire the age appropriate skills and competencies. It is well appreciated.

Then, how many of us plan for their spiritual wellbeing during this summer? How many days are planned to attend the week day Masses and visiting churches on the travel plan?

Children learn our attitudes and more than our activities. When they see that church is not important, prayer is not at all in the agenda of the whole planning. And faith is far out from the total vacation planning, no matter what you do, they will walk away from church sooner or later.

If we focus on the Lord and His teachings, if it is evident in our planning and living that the goal of our life is to reach heaven at the end of life here on earth, we will resound that message in everything. Our priorities will display that. Children will believe it and they will think about it and consider it as important in life above and over the agenda of the world.

By giving preference and opportunity for spiritual projects and activities let us help our children recognize our priority on our salvation and we should conquer the world to be with the Lord in His glory at the end of life.

God bless you all.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless.

After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: “They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

OBSTACLES

The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
