Background Information
The Owens Community College Wellness Process Management team was charged with
the mission of identifying current health and wellness practices and then to evaluate and
develop an action plan that would lead to a positive change in the quality of life of our Owens
Community College family.
The health/wellness issue first was identified by the steering committee when an
employee commented that “the walk to and from the parking lot” was often the extent of her
exercise for the day.
Team Members with a wide variety of expertise from both campus sites were recruited
to further develop this concept. The Team first met in early September, 2007 for initial process
management training.
From that time forward, the Team has met every one to two weeks to identify the
current status of health and wellness on campus. The team early on identified the Owens
Health Care Committee as an important resource in developing an overall wellness plan. The
team collaborated with members of the Health Care Committee to develop and make available a
health survey to all Owens Community College Employees.
The results from the above Survey are detailed in the remainder of this document. These
results have served as a foundation for the recommendations and action plan that the Team has
developed.

Definitions*
Wellness Defined†
Wellness as defined by the National Wellness Association is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence.
The key words are process, aware, choices and success.
Process means that we never arrive at a point where there is no possibility of Improving. Aware means that we are by our nature continuously seeking more information about how we can improve
Choices mean that we have considered a variety of options and select those that seem to be in our best interest
Success is determined by each individual to be their personal collection of accomplishments for their life
Objectives of a Wellness Program include:
Raise the awareness of staff on the concept and practice of wellness and health
Create opportunities for adoption of healthier choices
Facilitate advancement in life‐long learning and application of wellness lifestyles

Engrafting Wellness into the System
The efforts of the Owens Community College Wellness Process Management Team
can be felt by the entire Owens’ Community. Every individual has a state of health and
wellness and the Team would like to act as an impetus for all employees to improve their
status on the health/wellness continuum.
It is our belief that a variety of departments will need to be involved in the
continuous implementation of our plan. These areas include Human Resources, the fitness
facilities on both campuses, and faculty and students in the Health Sciences areas.
Much work lies ahead, but we believe that we have developed a firm foundation for
helping our employees to integrate a more active health/wellness lifestyle into their daily
work environment.
