W/N Year 1Quarter 2

Before you begin the activity, please hand out the pre-test to each student. The pre-test has three different grade levels, make sure to use the correct one for your age group. The pre-test will help us evaluate how effective the

class is on teaching kids about nutrition. At the end of the quarter the same test will be administered again to see how much knowledge they gained from the beginning.

Tip: Avoid using the word test! Instead ask kids,

“How many of you know what nutrition is all about? How about we figure it out?” Then hand out the test.

Dear Parents: Today, your child learned… 1. Water is the best option to drink when they are thirsty.2. Everyone needs to drink plenty of water every day to stay healthy. Why is this important? Children get dehydrated easily and not having enough water in their body can lead to cramping and fatigue. Often, when children are thirsty, they drink sugar-sweetened drinks, which provide a lot of extra calories they don’t need. Even though 100% juice has vitamins and minerals in it, it’s missing all the fiber that is left behind when the juice is squeezed from the fruit. Try to limit fruit juice to 6 oz. a day for your child. We often mistake thirst for hunger, causing us to choose a snack when our body is actually asking for water. What you can do? 1. Encourage your child to drink water.2. If your child likes the taste of juice, encourage them to eat the actual whole fruit with a glass

of water.3. Limit sodas and fruit drinks. If you want to put a drink in his or her lunch box, try a small 8 oz.

bottled water that they can refill.4. If your family loves flavored drinks, switch to zero-calorie flavored water, diet soda, or herbal

tea. Sincerely,

6Goodbye to Things I’ve Never Seen

I wash my hands until they’re clean,(pretend to wash your hands)

To get rid of things I’ve never seen.(Cover your eyes with your hands)

I do this many times a day,(Hold your hands up)

to shoo the dirt and germs away!(Wave goodbye)

And before I eat an apple or pear, Iwash their skins with such great care.

(STOP and rub the fruit before you eat it)

I do the same for vegetables too, to keep them safe for me and you!(Point at yourself then extend out your arms)

6Germ Freeze Tag!

Split the children into 2 main groups:1. Hands2. Germs3. Soap

To help children remember which group they belong to, use tag signs

Mark a place as the “SINK”

1. Mark boundaries2. Have a restricted area for tagging such as from shoulders down to hands.3. Use butterfly fingers for tagging to avoid pushing.4. Remind kids if they hear the whistle they must FREEZE in place

After 5 minutes or so, stop the game and have them switch signs, remind them of the rules and resume play.

(It would help if you demonstrate as you are ex-plaining the rules, call on some volunteers)

• GERMS can chase apples or hands• SOAP are the “rescuers” to hands• Hands must run to the “SINK” and do a “WA-

TER TWIST” to get washed (make up a twist dance). Then return to play
