Ponder This:

“Cast yourself into the arms of

God and be very sure that if He

wants anything of you, He will

fit you for the work and give

you strength.”

—Saint Philip Neri

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

S O THE PHARISEES AND SCRIBES ques-

tioned him, “Why do your disciples not follow the tra-

dition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean

hands?”

He responded, “Well did Isaiah prophesy about you

hypocrites, as it is written:

This people honors me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me;

in vain do they worship me,

teaching as doctrines human precepts.

You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human

tradition.”

He summoned the crowd again and said to them, “Hear

me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from

outside can defile that person; but the things that come out

from within are what defile.

“From within people, from their hearts, come evil

thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice,

deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All

these evils come from within and they defile.”

St. Albert’s School Report

September 9th, at 6:30 is our Back to School

Parent Night. We would prefer only parents if

possible, but we want parents there even if

they must bring their kids. Your presence is

much more important than your ability to find

a babysitter.

Quote for the week

“Your success as a leader who gets the most

from people won’t depend upon your title,

your degrees, or your previous experience. It

won’t be the result of how much you know,

how hard you work, what long hours you

keep, or anything you say. It will rest almost

totally on the way you treat people.”

Sincerely,

Bret Scoggin, Principal

Centering Prayer An Introduction to Contemplative Practice

St. Albert’s Centering Prayer group, led by JoAnn and

Chuck Baird, will resume its first Monday of the month

meetings on Monday, September 7, at 7:00 pm in the

chapel.

On Centering Prayer

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CC), § 2653,

says:

The Church ‘forcefully and specially exhorts all the Chris-

tian faithful…to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus

Christ’ (Phil 3:8) by frequent reading of the divine Scrip-

tures…Let them remember, however, that prayer should

accompany the reading of Sacred Scripture, so that a dia-

logue takes place between God and man. For ‘we speak to

him when we pray; we listen to him when we read the

divine oracles.’

Centering Prayer is a spiritual custom based upon the

Word of God, Lectio Divina. We strive to increase the

time we spend alone with God to 15-20 minutes twice a

day. The purpose of our gathering is to encourage one

another each month in this sacred, individual practice, in

the words of CC, § 2560, in “the encounter of God’s thirst

with ours.”

All members of the Centering Prayer group invite you to

join them in the joy of this spiritual discipline.

K-8th grade Registration

for Religious Education (“Family Formation”) and sacramental preparation

for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist

is now OPEN.

This includes preparation for unbaptized children in the 3rd-8th grade (Children’s Catechumenate)

NEW THIS YEAR Registration WILL CLOSE on September 1, 2015 and students will

NOT be accepted into the program after this date.

Please Note

The Diocese of Reno requires two years of formal instruction for sacramental preparation.

Our first Family Formation class will held on Wednesday September 16th at 6:30pm in the gym. If we have NOT received a

copy of your child’s Baptism record previously, you are REQUIRED to bring it to this first class meeting. Parent and child attend-

ance at ALL Family Formation sessions is required and families in sacramental preparation are expected at each class meeting.

Registration can be done online and calendars for the year can be downloaded at www.stalbertreno.org.

Click on ‘Religious Education” and then “Family Formation” for the registration “Launch Form”.

You can also pick up a registration packet in the parish office. Summer hours are 9-1pm.

deacon’s corner Conversations at Table

ON COMING TO KNOW GOD SAINTS AND SINNERS

Deacon Chuck Lanham

T HERE rests a common complaint among many and I must confess throughout much of my life to membership with

those so conflicted, that there is no valid rationale for imbibing at the altar of church. After all, isn’t church simply a

crutch, a group therapy clinic for the weak and broken? The argument follows along a well-worn arc: church is unneces-

sary because I pray to God on my own, read and study about God on my own, talk and hear God on my own, anytime and any-

place. So why go to church? Why waste my time?

Having been a full-fledged member of this self-inflicted orthodoxy for many years I can say with no small amount of

equanimity and assurance that it is a delusion of the highest order which rests upon a shaky foundation. Arguably, there is abso-

lutely nothing wrong with praying to God, reading and studying about God, or talking and listening to God. Those are all good

and valid activities to engage in doing. But will you? How often and for how long?

And then there is the issue of coming to know God. On this Saint Thomas Aquinas tells us “It was necessary for man’s

salvation that there should be a knowledge revealed by God besides philosophical science built up by human reason … because

man is directed to God as to an end that surpasses the grasp of his reason. But the end must first be known by men who are to

direct their … actions to the end. Hence it was necessary for the salvation of man that certain truths about God which exceed hu-

man reason should be made known to him by divine revelation.”1

Our intellect and reason are incapable of discerning much that is God thus it was necessary for God to reveal something

of himself to us in order that we might come to know God not just know about God. Consider how little we know about God, the

fact that we still are attempting to “prove” or “disprove” his very existence.

Peter Kreeft offers this insight:

“But even if we had not fallen into sin and error, our knowledge of God would have been less adequate than a

worm’s knowledge of us. For the distance between the finitude of the worm and the finitude of man is only finite,

while the distance between finite man and infinite God is infinite.

Only God can bridge that gap, by acting ‘down’ with His power; we cannot bridge it by moving ‘up’ with our

power…This was so from the beginning, even before we fell. How much more do we need divinely revealed truth

now that we are fallen.”2

Returning to the question of whether church (organized religion) is a crutch, Kreeft responds, “Yes, organized religion is

a crutch. You mean you didn’t know that you are a cripple? … Go back to Socrates: ‘Know thyself.’ For Socrates, there are only

two kinds of people: the wise, who know they are fools; and the fools, who think they are wise. Similarly, for Christ and all the

prophets, there are only two kinds of people: saints, who know they are sinners; and sinners, who think they are saints. Which are

you? You can tell which class you fit into by whether or not you accept the ‘crutch’ ...”

RCIA needs you to talk to

the people in your life!

Did you know that, through the Holy Spirit, meeting just one

person who is Catholic can make a difference and help people

to join the church? Could YOU be that person for someone

else you know?

I think there are many of you in this church that could be “agents” of the Holy Spirit for someone in your

lives. I am asking you to please pray about that and to invite anyone you think might be interested in

learning more about the Catholic church to attend our RCIA informational session.

Do you have a friend who asks you questions about your faith or seems to want a closer relationship with

God? Why not invite them to come learn more about the Catholic Church? You could say something

simple like, “I just learned about a program you might be interested in at my church.” You could volun-

teer to come with them to the informational session.

RCIA gives people who would like to explore the possibility of becoming Catholic, and for Catholics

who have not been Confirmed or received First Communion, an opportunity to come into full commun-

ion with the church. We meet on Wednesday nights and each week have different topics, with a mix of

classroom style learning, faith sharing, group discussion, etc. We will also assign a member of the parish

to be a sponsor to accompany each person on their journey. There is no pressure to commit, if at any time

they decide they are not ready to join the church.

This year’s RCIA informational session will be held on Wednesday, September 16th at 7:00 p.m. in the

Chapel.
