Part 1 General
1.1 RELATED SECTIONS
1.2 ADMINISTRATIVE
1. Submit to Consultant submittals listed for review. Submit with
reasonable promptness and in orderly sequence so as to not cause
delay in Work. Failure to submit in ample time is not considered
sufficient reason for an extension of Contract Time and no claim
for extension by reason of such default will be allowed.
2. Work affected by submittal shall not proceed until review is
complete.
3. Present shop drawings, product data, samples and mock-ups in SI
Metric units, as required.
4. Where items or information is not produced in SI Metric units
converted values are acceptable.
5. Review submittals prior to submission to Consultant. This review
represents that necessary requirements have been determined and
verified, or will be, and that each submittal has been checked and
co-ordinated with requirements of Work and Contract Documents.
Submittals not stamped, signed, dated and identified as to specific
project will be returned without being examined and shall be
considered rejected.
6. Notify Consultant, in writing at time of submission, identifying
deviations from requirements of Contract Documents stating reasons
for deviations.
7. Verify field measurements and affected adjacent Work is
coordinated.
8. Contractor’s responsibility for errors and omissions in
submission is not relieved by Consultant’s review of
submittals.
9. Contractor’s responsibility for deviations in submission from
requirements of Contract Documents is not relieved by Consultant
review.
10. Keep one reviewed copy of each submission on site.
1.3 SHOP DRAWINGS AND PRODUCT DATA

1. The term “shop drawings” means drawings, diagrams,
illustrations, schedules, performance charts, brochures and other
data which are to be provided by Contractor to illustrate details
of a portion of Work.
2. Indicate materials, methods of construction and attachment or
anchorage, erection diagrams, connections, explanatory notes and
other information necessary for completion of Work. Where articles
or equipment attach or connect to other articles or equipment,
indicate that such items have been coordinated, regardless of
Section under which adjacent items will be supplied and installed.
Indicate cross references to design drawings and
specifications.
3. Allow 6 days for Consultant’s review of each submission.
4. Adjustments made on shop drawings by Consultant are not intended
to change Contract Price. If adjustments affect value of Work,
state such in writing to Consultant prior to proceeding with
Work.
5. Make changes in shop drawings as Consultant may require,
consistent with Contract Documents. When resubmitting, notify
Consultant in writing of any revisions other than those
requested.
.1 Accompany submissions with transmittal letter.
6. Submissions shall include:
.1 Date and revision dates.
.2 Project title and number.
.3 Name and address of: .1 Subcontractor. .2 Supplier .3
Manufacturer.
.4 Contractor’s stamp, signed by Contractor’s authorized
representative certifying approval of submissions, verification of
field measurements and compliance with Contract Documents. .1
Details of appropriate portions of Work as applicable.
7. After Consultant’s review, distribute copies.
8. Submit electronic copy of shop drawings for each requirement
requested in specification Sections and as consultant may
reasonably request.
9. Submit electronic copies of product data sheets or brochures for
requirements requested in Specification Sections and as requested
by Consultant where shop drawings will not be prepared due to
standardized manufacture of product.
10. Delete information not applicable to project.

11. Supplement standard information to provide details applicable
to project.
12. If upon review by Consultant, no errors or omissions are
discovered or if only minor corrections are made, electronic copies
will be returned and fabrication and installation of Work may
proceed. If shop drawings are rejected, noted copy will be returned
and resubmission of corrected shop drawings, through same procedure
indicated above, must be performed before fabrication and
installation of Work may proceed.
1.4 SAMPLES
1. Submit for review samples in duplicate as requested in
respective Specification Sections. Label samples with origin and
intended use.
2. Deliver samples prepaid to Consultant’s business address.
3. Notify Consultant in writing, at time of submission of
deviations in samples from requirements of Contract
Documents.
4. Where colour, pattern or texture is criterion, submit full range
of samples.
5. Adjustments made on samples by Consultant are not intended to
change Contract Price. If adjustments affect value of Work, state
such in writing to Consultant prior to proceeding with Work.
6. Make changes in samples which Consultant may require, consistent
with Contract Document.
7. Reviewed and accepted samples will become standard of
workmanship and material against which installed Work will be
verified.

Part 1 General
1.1 RELATED SECTIONS
1.2 INSPECTION
1. Allow Consultant access to Work. If part of Work is in
preparation at locations other than Place of Work, allow access to
such Work whenever it is in progress.
2. Give timely notice requesting inspection by Consultant.
3. If Contractor covers or permits to be covered Work that has been
designated for special tests, inspections or approvals before such
is made, uncover such Work.
1.3 ACCESS TO WORK
1. Allow inspection/testing agencies access to Work and fabrication
plants.
1.4 REJECTED WORK
1. Remove defective Work, whether result of poor workmanship, use
of defective products or damage and whether incorporated in Work or
not, which has been rejected by Consultant as failing to conform to
Contract Documents. Replace or re-execute.
2. Make good other Contractor’s work damaged by such removals
promptly.
3. If in opinion of Consultant it is not expedient to correct
defective Work, Owner may deduct from Contract Price an appropriate
value which shall be determined by Consultant.
1.5 REPORTS
1. Submit electronic copies of inspection and test or other reports
to Consultant.
1.6 EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEMS
1. Submit adjustment and balancing reports for mechanical,
electrical systems.
2. Refer to mechanical and electrical drawings for definitive
requirements.

Part 1 General
1. Provide temporary controls in order to execute Work
expeditiously.
2. Remove from site all such work after use.
3. Provide barriers around equipment and finishes designated to
remain. Protect from damage by equipment and construction
procedures.
1.2 DUST TIGHT SCREENS
1. Provide double skinned, opaque, dust tight screens or partitions
to localize dust generating activities, and for protection of
workers, finished areas of Work and occupants.
2. Maintain and relocate protection until such work is
complete.
1.3 ACCESS TO SITE
1. Provide and maintain access roads, sidewalk crossings, ramps and
construction runways as may be required for access to Work.
1.4 PUBLIC TRAFFIC FLOW
1. Provide and maintain competent signal flag operators, traffic
signals, barricades and flares, lights, or lanterns as required to
perform Work and protect the public.
1.5 FIRE ROUTES
1. Maintain access to property including overhead clearances for
use by emergency response vehicles.
1.6 PROTECTION FOR ADJACENT PROPERTY
1. Protect surrounding carpet, walls, finish surfaces and equipment
from damage during performance of Work.
2. To protect floor lay overlapped and secured Masonite 4 ft x 8 ft
panels on the floor for finishes to remain adjacent to work while
moving any materials. Remove and store after each shift.
3. Be responsible for damage incurred.

Part 1 General
1.1 RELATED SECTIONS
1.2 INSPECTION AND DECLARATION
1. Contractor’s Inspection: Contractor and all Subcontractors shall
conduct an inspection of Work, identify deficiencies and defects,
and repair as required to conform to Contract Documents.
.1 Notify Consultant in writing of satisfactory completion of
Contractor’s inspection and that corrections have been made.
.2 Request Consultant’s Inspection.
2. Consultant’s Inspection: Consultant, sub consultants and
Contractor will perform inspection of Work to identify obvious
defects or deficiencies. Contractor shall correct Work
accordingly.
3. Completion: submit written certificate that following have been
performed:
.1 Work has been completed and inspected for compliance with
Contract Documents.
.2 Defects have been corrected and deficiencies have been
completed.
.3 Equipment and systems have been tested, and balanced and are
fully operational.
.4 Certificates required by ESA and Building Department have been
submitted.
.5 Operation of systems have been demonstrated to Owner’s
personnel.
.6 Work is complete and ready for Final Inspection.
4. Final Inspection: when items noted above are completed, request
final inspection of Work by Owner, Consultant and Contractor. If
Work is deemed incomplete by Consultant, complete outstanding items
and request re-inspection.
5. Declaration of Substantial Performance: When Consultant
considers deficiencies and defects have been corrected and it
appears requirements of Contract have been substantially performed,
make application for certificate of Substantial Performance.
6. Commencement of Lien and Warranty Periods: date of Owner’s
acceptance of submitted declaration of Substantial Performance
shall be date for commencement for warranty period and commencement
of lien period unless required otherwise by lien statute of Place
of Work.

7. Final Payment: When Consultant considers final deficiencies and
defects have been corrected and it appears requirements of Contract
have been totally performed, make application for final payment. If
Work is deemed incomplete, complete outstanding items and request
re-inspection.
8. Payment of Holdback: After issuance of certificate of
Substantial Performance of Work, submit an application for payment
of holdback amount.

1.1 RELATED SECTIONS
1.2 PROJECT CLEANLINESS
1. Maintain Work in tidy condition, free from accumulation of waste
products and debris.
2. Remove waste materials from site at regularly scheduled times or
dispose of as directed by Consultant. Refer to drawings and
specifications for materials to be turned over to the Town or
re-used in finished work.
3. Make arrangements with and obtain permits from authorities
having jurisdiction for disposal of waste and debris.
4. Provide on-site containers for collection of waste materials and
debris as directed by facilities and security staff.
5. Provide and use clearly marked separate bins for
recycling.
6. Remove waste material and debris from site at end of each
working shift.
7. Dispose of waste materials and debris off site.
8. Clean interior areas prior to start of finish work, and maintain
areas free of dust and other contaminants during finishing
operations.
9. Store volatile waste in covered metal containers, and remove
from premises at end of each working day.
10. Provide adequate ventilation during use of volatile or noxious
substances. Use of building ventilation systems is not permitted
for this purpose.
11. Use only cleaning materials recommended by manufacturer of
surface to be cleaned, and as recommended by cleaning material
manufacturer.
12. Schedule cleaning operations so that resulting dust, debris and
other contaminants will not fall on wet, newly painted surfaces nor
contaminate building systems.
1.3 FINAL CLEANING
1. When Work is Substantially Performed, remove surplus products,
tools, construction machinery and equipment not required for
performance of remaining

Work.
2. Remove waste products and debris other than that caused by
others, and leave Work clean and suitable for occupancy.
3. Prior to final review, remove surplus products, tools,
construction machinery and equipment.
4. Remove waste products and debris other than that caused by Owner
or other Contractors.
5. Remove waste materials from site at regularly scheduled times or
dispose of as directed by Consultant.
6. Make arrangements with and obtain permits from authorities
having jurisdiction for disposal of waste and debris.
7. Clean and polish glass, mirrors, hardware, wall tile, stainless
steel, chrome, porcelain enamel, baked enamel, plastic laminate,
and mechanical and electrical fixtures. Replace broken, scratched
or disfigured glass.
8. Remove stains, spots, marks and dirt from decorative work,
electrical and mechanical fixtures, furniture fitments, walls, and
floors.
9. Clean lighting reflectors, lenses, and other lighting surfaces
within the scope of work.
10. Vacuum clean and dust building interiors, behind grilles,
louvres and screens.
11. Wax, seal, shampoo or prepare floor finishes, as applicable and
as recommended by manufacturer.
12. Inspect finishes, fitments and equipment and ensure specified
workmanship and operation.
13. Clean equipment and fixtures to a sanitary condition.
14. Remove debris and surplus materials from accessible concealed
spaces.

1.1 RELATED SECTIONS
1.2 SUBMISSION
1. Prepare instructions and data using personnel experienced in
maintenance and operation of described products.
2. Copy will be returned after final inspection, with Consultant’s
comments.
3. Revise content of documents as required prior to final
submittal.
4. Two weeks prior to Substantial Performance of the Work, submit
to the Consultant, four final copies of operating and maintenance
manuals in English.
5. Ensure spare parts, maintenance materials and special tools
provided are new, undamaged or defective, and of same quality and
manufacture as products provided in Work.
6. If requested, furnish evidence as to type, source and quality of
products provided.
7. Defective products will be rejected, regardless of previous
inspections. Replace products at own expense.
8. Pay costs of transportation.
1.3 FORMAT
1. Organize data in the form of an instructional manual.
2. Binders: vinyl, hard covered, 3 ‘D’ ring, loose leaf 219 x 279mm
with spine and face pockets.
3. When multiple binders are used, correlate data into related
consistent groupings. Identify contents of each binder on
spine.
4. Cover: Identify each binder with printed title ‘Project Record
Documents’; list title of project and identify subject matter of
contents.
5. Arrange content by Section numbers and sequence of Table of
Contents.

with text; fold larger drawings to size of text pages.
9. Provide [1:1] scaled CAD files in dwg format on CD.
1.4 CONTENTS - EACH VOLUME
.1 date of submission; names;
.2 addresses, and telephone numbers of Consultant and Contractor
with name of responsible parties;
.3 schedule of products and systems, indexed to content of
volume.
2. For each product or system:
.1 list names, addresses and telephone numbers of subcontractors
and suppliers, including local source of supplies and replacement
parts.
3. Product Data: mark each sheet to clearly identify specific
products and component parts, and data applicable to installation;
delete inapplicable information.
4. Drawings: supplement product data to illustrate relations of
component parts of equipment and systems, to show control and flow
diagrams.
5. Printed Text: as required to supplement product data. Provide
logical sequence of instructions for each procedure, incorporating
manufacturer’s instructions specified in Section 01400 - Quality
Control.
1.5 AS-BUILTS AND SAMPLES
1. In addition to requirements in General Conditions, maintain at
the site one record copy of:
.1 Contract Drawings.
.5 Reviewed shop drawings, product data, and samples.
.6 Field test records.

2. Store record documents and samples in field office apart from
documents used for construction. Provide files, racks, and secure

each document “PROJECT RECORD” in neat, large, printed
letters.
4. Maintain record documents in clean, dry and legible condition.
Do not use record documents for construction purposes.
5. Keep record documents and samples available for
inspection.
1.6 RECORDING ACTUAL SITE CONDITIONS
1. Record information on set of black line opaque drawings, and in
copy of Project Manual.
2. Record information concurrently with construction progress. Do
not conceal Work until required information is recorded.
3. Contract Drawings and shop drawings: legibly mark each item to
record actual construction, including (if applicable):
.1 Measured depths of elements of foundation in relation to finish
first floor datum.
.2 Measured horizontal and vertical locations of underground
utilities and appurtenances, referenced to permanent surface
improvements.
.3 Measured locations of internal utilities and appurtenances,
referenced to visible and accessible features of
construction.
.4 Field changes of dimension and detail.
.5 Changes made by change orders.
.6 Details not on original Contract Drawings.
.7 References to related shop drawings and modifications.
4. Specifications: legibly mark each item to record actual
construction, including:
.1 Manufacturer, trade name, and catalogue number of each product
actually installed, particularly optional items and substitute
items.

1.7 MATERIALS AND FINISHES

1.8 MAINTENANCE MATERIALS

1.9 WARRANTIES AND BONDS

2. List subcontractor, supplier, and manufacturer, with name,

3. Obtain warranties and bonds, executed in duplicate by

1. CSA S350-M1980 Code of Practice for Safety in Demolition of
Structures.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
1. Conform to The Occupational Health and Safety Act, and
Regulation for Construction Projects.
2. Conform to OBC, especially Article 2.3.2.3 as applicable and
comply with National Building Code, Part 8, Construction Safety
Measures at Construction and Demolition sites.
3. Conform to requirements of local municipality regarding disposal
of waste materials.
4. Conform to Fire Code, Regulation under Fire Marshals Act
especially Part 8.
5. Employ for this work demolition company having substantial
experience in this work satisfactory to Owner. Work shall be
executed by company having minimum of 5 (five) years continuous
experience and able to deploy adequate equipment and skilled
personnel to complete demolition work expediently in an orderly and
efficient manner.

3.1 PROTECTION
1. Where required by authorities having jurisdiction, submit
drawings, diagrams or details showing sequence of dismantling work
and shoring of structures during demolition. Drawings for
structural elements shall bear signed professional seal of
Structural Engineer licensed to practice in Ontario.

2. At end of each day’s work leave work in safe condition ensuring
that no parts of structure are in danger of collapsing.
3.2 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Conform to requirements of local municipality regarding disposal
of waste materials. Remove contaminated or dangerous materials as
defined by authorities having jurisdiction, relating to
environmental protection, from site and dispose of in safe manner
to minimize danger at site or during disposal.
3.3 PERFORMANCE
1. Disconnect and cap mechanical services in accordance with
requirements of local authority having jurisdiction. Natural gas
supply lines shall be removed by Gas Company instructions. Remove
and dispose of other existing underground services and mechanical
equipment.

5.1. PREPARATION

3. Protect existing adjacent work against damages which might occur
from falling
debris or other causes due to work of this Section.
4. Erect and maintain dustproof partitions as required to prevent
spread of dust, fumes and smoke to other parts of building. On
completion, remove partitions
and make good surfaces to match adjacent surfaces of
building.

4.1. PERFORMANCE
1. Materials and debris shall not be stacked in building to extent
that overloading of any part of structure will occur.
2. At end of each day's work leave work in safe condition ensuring
that no parts of structure are in danger of collapsing.
3. Carry out demolition in accordance with requirements of CSA
S350-M. Demolish structure and remove materials from Site.
4. Demolish and remove interior partitions, walls, ceilings,
flooring down to concrete substrate, except those specified and/or
indicated to remain.
5. Demolish interior masonry walls in small sections. Remove and
lower structural members and other heavy objects with safe and
suitable equipment.
6. Co-ordinate with Section 05999 for provision of lateral supports
at tops of existing interior masonry walls scheduled to
remain.
7. Firestopping and Smoke Seal: In event that work of this Section
impacts on integrity of fire separations, ensure that trade
performing firestopping is notified.
7.1. DISPOSAL OF WASTE MATERIALS
1. Selling or burning of materials on Site is not permitted.
2. Conform to requirements of municipality's Works Department
regarding disposal of waste materials.
3. Materials prohibited from municipality waste management
facilities shall be removed from Site and dispose of at recycling
companies specializing in recyclable materials.

.1 Cold weather requirements
.1 Supplement Clause 5.16.2 of CAN3-A371 with following
requirements: .1 Maintain temperature of mortar between 5°C and
50°C until batch
is used. .2 Review and follow unit manufacturer’s
recommendations.
.2 Hot weather requirements .1 Protect freshly laid masonry from
drying too rapidly, by means of
waterproof, non-staining coverings.
.3 Keep masonry dry using waterproof, non-staining coverings that
extend over walls and down sides sufficient to protect walls from
wind driven rain, until masonry work is completed and protected by
flashings or other permanent construction.
.4 Protect masonry and other work from marking and other damage.
Protect completed work from mortar droppings. Use non-staining
coverings.
.5 Provide temporary bracing of masonry work during and after
erection until permanent lateral support is in place.
Part 2 : Products
1.7 MATERIALS
.1 General: Provide special masonry shapes and sizes as shown or
specified such as solids, corners, etc. Special shapes shall be
manufactured and fired at same time and with the same batch as
standard masonry unit to be used. Special shapes shall be
manufactured in colours in accordance with masonry unit colour
locations as indicated on drawings.
.2 Standard concrete block units: to CAN3-A165 Series
CAN3-A165.1.
.1 S/15/A/M, 75% solid for block walls exposed on exterior,
foundation walls and for load bearing walls.
.2 S/15/A/M, 100% solid for all locations where structural members
bear on concrete block walls and where indicated on drawings.
.3 H/15/A/M for all other locations.
.4 Blocks shall be autoclave or bubble cure process, high pressure
steam cured, modular. Linear shrinkage and moisture movement not to
exceed .045% .
.5 Special shapes: provide bull-nosed units for exposed corners
where corner guards are not indicated, except for walls finished to
partial height with ceramic tile. Provide purpose-made shapes for
lintels and bond beams.
.6 Exposed block shall be uniform in colour, shade and texture and
made by one manufacturer.

.7 Where concrete block walls are required to act as fire
separations or
barriers, they shall conform to Ontario Building Code with respect
to equivalent thickness and type of concrete.
.3 Use same brands of materials and source of aggregate for entire
project.
.4 Mortar: CSA A179. .1 Use aggregate passing 1.18 mm sieve where 6
mm thick joints are
indicated. .2 Mortar for bedding steel bearing plates, lintels, for
laying bearing courses
under concentrated loads. Use type “M” cement mortar having a
compressive strength of 17.5 Mpa.
.3 Mortar for load bearing masonry units, use type “S” cement
mortar having a compressive strength of 12.5 Mpa minimum.
.4 Non-staining mortar: use non-staining masonry cement for
cementitious portion of specified mortar type.
.5 Except as indicated above for all other masonry, Type “N”
masonry mortar have a compressive strength of 5.0 Mpa
minimum.
.6 Mortar colour: to match existing mortar colour.
.5 Grout: to CSA A179, Table 3.
.6 Use same brands of materials and source of aggregate for entire
project.
1.8 MIXES
.1 Admixtures: Mix grout to semi-fluid consistency.
.2 Pointing mortar: Prehydrate pointing mortar by mixing
ingredients dry, then mix again adding just enough water to produce
damp unworkable mix that will retain its form when pressed into
ball. Allow to stand for not less than 1 hour nor more than 2 hours
then remix with sufficient water to produce mortar of proper
consistency for pointing.
.3 Prepare and mix mortar materials under strict supervision and in
small batches for immediate use only. Use and mix proprietary
mortar and use and store ready mixed mortars in strict accordance
with manufacturer’s instructions to produce the mortar types as
specified in accordance with CSA A179. Do not use retempered
mortars except for ready mixed mortar which shall be retempered in
accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
PART 2: Execution
2.1 INSTALLATION
.1 Perform masonry work in accordance with CAN3-A371 except where
specified

otherwise.
.2 Masonry units. .1 Bond to match existing in all locations. .2
Coursing height: as indicated on drawings .3 Jointing: concave
where exposed in the finished work, flush where
concealed or non-paint finish applied over block in the finished
work.
.3 Perform masonry mortar and grout work in accordance with CSA
A179 except where specified otherwise.
.4 Build masonry plumb, level, and true to line, with vertical
joints in alignment.
.5 Coursing: Layout coursing and bond to achieve correct coursing
heights, and
continuity of bond above and below openings, with minimum of
cutting. All coursing shall match and line up with existing
coursing. Bring all discrepancies to Consultant’s attention for
review.
.6 Where fire rated walls are indicated on drawings, materials and
construction shall meet ULC requirements.
2.2 CONSTRUCTION
.1 Exposed masonry: Remove chipped, cracked, and otherwise damaged
units in exposed masonry and replace with undamaged units.
.2 Jointing .1 Allow joints to set just enough to remove excess
water, then tool with
round jointer to provide smooth, joints true to line, compressed,
uniformly concave joints where concave joints are indicated.
.2 Strike flush all joints concealed in walls and joints in walls
to receive plaster or other applied material except paint or
similar thin finish coating.
.3 Cutting .1 Cut out for electrical switches, outlet boxes, and
other recessed or
built-in objects. .2 Make cuts straight, clean, and free from
uneven edges.
.4 Building-In .1 Build in items required to be built into masonry.
.2 Prevent displacement of built-in items during construction.
Check plumb,
location and alignment frequently, as work progresses. .3 Brace
door jambs to maintain plumb. Fill spaces between jambs and
masonry with mortar.

.1 Leave 3 mm space below shelf angles. .2 Leave 20 mm space
between top of non-load bearing walls and
partitions and structural elements. Do not use wedges. .3 Built
masonry to tie in with stabilizers, with provision for
vertical
movement. .6 Loose steel lintels
.1 Install loose steel lintels provided by structural. Centre over
opening width.
.7 Concrete block units. Lay block with face shell bedding only.
When solid units are used, lay block with full beds of mortar.
Leave no cells open in exposed work. Supply and install wall
reinforcement in all blockwork. Locate corners accurately. Bed face
shells and cross and end webs fully in mortar. Use full bed of
mortar for first course. Bond intersecting block walls in alternate
courses.
.8 Masonry Partitions: Extend all masonry partitions up through
ceiling to structure or concrete slab above. Leave void between top
of non-loadbearing walls and structural elements. Maintain fire
rating at all locations. Fill voids with mortar where required.

elements. Do not use wedges.
.9 Existing openings Infilled and New Openings Cut: In the existing
building there are various locations where new openings are to be
cut in existing masonry and where existing openings are to be
partially or completely blocked up. Some walls are structural.
Coordinate with Section 05120 - Structural Steel for lintels and
reinforcement as may be required. Carry out work in accordance with
Owner’s requirements regarding time of work and phasing
requirements. Coordinate with Section 02221 - Demolition. Do not
commence work until the work has been coordinated with Structural
Consultant.
2.3 Reinforcing and Connectors
.1 Provide masonry connectors and reinforcement in accordance with
code requirements, CAN3-A370, CAN3-A371, CAN/CSA-A23.1 and
CAN3-S304 unless indicated otherwise.
.2 Prior to placing mortar and grout, obtain Consultant's approval
of placement of reinforcement and connectors.
.3 Spacing of connectors and ties shall be in accordance with
standards referenced herein, local code requirements and structural
wall design.
.4 Reinforce all masonry walls with continuous masonry
reinforcement in every second block course. At openings, provide
extra reinforcement so that first and second courses above and
below openings are reinforced. Extend extra reinforcement 300 mm
beyond opening in each direction.

2.4 Lateral Support and Anchorage
.1 Provide lateral support angles and anchorage in accordance with
CAN3-S304.
2.5 Grouting
.1 Grout masonry in accordance with CAN3-S304 and as indicated. 2.6
Re-installation
.1 Cut openings in existing work as indicated.
.2 Make good existing work. Use materials to match existing.
2.7 Field Quality Control
.1 Inspection and testing will be carried out by Testing Laboratory
designated by Owner.
.2 Cost of testing will be paid by Cash Allowance.
2.8 Cleaning
.1 Allow mortar droppings on masonry to partially dry then remove
by means of trowel, followed by rubbing lightly with small piece of
block and finally by brushing. Obtain and follow masonry unit
manufacturer’s written instructions for cleaning. Test sample area
to judge effectiveness of cleaning procedures and obtain
Consultant’s approval.
.2 Remove mortar with wood paddles and scrapers before wetting.
Saturate masonry with clean water and flush off loose mortar and
dirt.
.3 Repeat cleaning process as often as necessary to remove mortar
and other stains.
.4 Obtain Consultant’s approval of the use of acid solution
treatment for difficult to clean masonry as described in Technical
Note No. 20 published by Brick Institute of America

1.1 DESCRIPTION OF WORK
1.1.1 Furnish all specially fabricated miscellaneous iron, steel,
aluminum, and copper based metal items not specifically described
in other Sections but required for complete and functional
building, all as indicated on Drawings, as specified, and as
required by the Work.
1.2 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS
1.2.1 Provide bracing as may be required to counter lateral loads
and dynamic stresses where movement of support equipment may occur.
Comply with requirements of OBC for design of all stressed
members.
1.3 SHOP DRAWINGS
1.3.1 In accordance with Section 01334; show each component,
dimensions, connections, anchor bolt and bearing plate locations,
paint types, installation details and other pertinent data required
for shop and field assembly.
1.4 PRODUCT HANDLING
1.4.1 Handle components so as to avoid permanent distortion, and
with care, having due regard for surface finish.
1.5 PROTECTION
1.5.1 When metalwork is to be left exposed, prevent staining by

1.7 TRENCH GRATING
1.7.1 Rectangular welded aluminum allow 65ST6 bearing bars and
50ST5 cross bars furnished in clear anodized finish. Loading, 4.9
kN/m2 at restricted pedestrian loading; 7.3 kN/m2 at vehicular
loading; manufacturers, same as Para 2.9 above.
1.8 GALVANIZING
1.8.1 ASTM A 123-89 for zinc (hot galvanized) coatings on products
fabricated from rolled, pressed and forged steel shapes, plates,
bars and strip.
1.8.2 CAN/CSA-G164-M92 for galvanizing of irregularly shaped

1.9 SHOP PAINT
1.9.1 Prepaint finish; cold phosphate treatment to galvanized

1.11 FABRICATION
1.11.1 Fabricate in accordance with reviewed shop drawings.
Fabricate structural components to requirements of
CAN/CSA-S16.1-94. Supply all fastenings, anchors and accessories
required for fabrication and erection of this Work. Hot dip
galvanize items occurring on or in an exterior wall or slab.
1.12 SURFACE PREPARATION AND FINISHING
1.12.1 Clean steel surfaces of mill scale, rust and foreign matter.
Remove oil, grease, soil, dust or foreign matter deposited on steel
after completing surface preparation. Apply 1 coat primer after
fabrication.
Part 3: Execution
1.13 ERECTION
1.13.1 By fabricator except as otherwise specified. Insulate metals
where necessary to prevent corrosion due to contact between
dissimilar metals, and between metals and masonry, concrete or
plaster.
1.14 SCHEDULE OF MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
1.14.1 Lateral Supports for Masonry Walls: Minimum size 100 x 100 x
150 mm long x 6 mm thick steel angles along top of masonry walls
exceeding 4500 mm in length and vertically laterally unsupported by
masonry walls running at right angles to them. Fasten angles to
floor or roof structure above and space at not over 1800 mm oc,
(and 1200 mm oc at Seismic Zones 2 and 3) on both sides of the
walls, staggering the angles so that when combined, angles are not
over 900 mm oc. Provide 40 x 15 x 75 mm long steel bar welded to 90
x 100 x 6 mm steel plate, to be used where masonry is exposed to
underside of structure.
1.14.2 Lintels: Supply miscellaneous non-scheduled loose lintels as
required to various trades for installation. Provide 150 mm minimum
end bearing.
1.14.3 Overhead Toilet Partition Supports: Provide necessary
suspended and diagonally braced channels and angle support Work for
suspended partitions and screens furnished under separate Sections.
Make connections to concrete structure using expansion bolts as
specified herein. Minimum depth of main carrying members; 200
mm.
1.14.4 Vanity Brackets: Where vanities span more than 2000 mm
between walls, assemble cantilevered vanity support brackets of
welded brackets in triangular configuration of 50 x 50 x 6 mm
angles extending 300 mm down wall and

horizontally under vanity top for nominal width of vanity. Connect
to walls with heavy-duty toggle bolts after setting plumb and
level.
1.14.5 Furnish 10 mm hard rubber isolation strips, drill and place
into position prior to screwing grating into final position. Ensure
vertical portions of rubber are mechanically fixed to vertical legs
of angles using stainless steel machine screws.
1.14.6 Hot dip galvanize grating after fabrication.
1.14.7 Dividing Bars: Supply for installation under Concrete
Section 6 x 38 mm continuous bronze dividing bars in locations
where resilient flooring and concrete floors adjoin. Provide
dividing bars to suit floor thicknesses.
1.14.8 Supply and install steel plate ceilings where indicated, in
accordance with details. Steel plate to be 5 mm thick. Include
accessories as necessary for a complete installation.
1.14.9 Miscellaneous Sections and Framing: Supply and install steel
sections which are:

1. For surfaces to be painted, use Pentox (clear) by Osmose -
Pentox Inc. Or Super Solignum - 10 - 10 Paintable Penta by Solignum

2. For concealed surfaces, use Pentox (green) by Osmose - Pentox

Treating 800 - 461- 7676 or approved alternate. Chemicals used
shall be free of halogens, sulfates, ammonium phosphate and
formadehyde. Carbon steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, copper and
red brass in contact with the fire retardant treated wood shall
exhibit corrosion rates less than one mil / year. Plywood shall be
pressure treated with Dricon fire retardant chemicals in accordance
with CSA 080 M. Follow up inspection and labelling shall be
provided by Underwriters Laboratories of Canada and the material
shall be certified to have a flame spread rate of 25 or less.
2. All plywood shall have ink brands on 1 face or end of plywood
sheet.
3. Pressure treat plywood with fire retardant chemical, according
to CSA 080.27 and colour for on-site recognition.
4. Follow up inspection and labelling shall be provided by ULC and
material shall be certified to have the following: flame spread
rating: 25 or less, fuel contribution: 25 or less.
5. Plywood shall be kiln dried to 15% after pressure
impregnation.
6. Fire retardant chemicals used for treatment shall be free of
halogens, sulphates, ammonium phosphates and formaldehyde.
Part 3 Execution
1. Treat surfaces of material with wood preservative, before
installation.
2. Apply preservative by dipping or by brush to completely saturate
and maintain wet film on surface for minimum 3 minute soak on
lumber and one minute soak on plywood.
3. Re-treat surfaces exposed by cutting, trimming or boring with
liberal brush application of preservative before
installation.
4. Treat all material at exterior and materials within an exterior
wall or floor assembly.
3.2 INSTALLATION
1. Comply with requirements of OBC, supplemented by the following
paragraphs.
2. Install furring and blocking as required to space out and
support carpentry work, applied moulding, railings, bumpers and the
like, wall and ceiling finishes, wall mounted equipment indicated
on the drawings, pull down screen, facings, and other work as
required. Coordinate with Owner for exact location, and
provide

wood blocking for mounting of curtains or blinds where
indicated.
3. Align and plumb faces of furring and blocking to tolerance of
1:600.
4. Install rough buck, nailers and linings to rough openings as
required to provide backing for frames and other work.
5. Install sleepers and blocking as indicated and as otherwise
required for support.
6. Consult with and cooperate with other sections in advance and
build in or make provisions for installation of other work.
7. Ground shall be of a thickness to provide for application of
finishes. Roof side surfaces of grounds shall present plumb and
true plane throughout.
8. All nails shall be long enough so that at least half their
length penetrates into the second member. Splitting of wood members
shall be minimized by staggering the nails in the direction of the
grain and by keeping nails well in from edges.
9. Blocking shall be through-bolted to structure.
10. Anchor rough bucks to concrete or masonry with 3/8 in. diameter
expansion bolts and shields to Drummond and Reeves security buck
anchors, minimum three per jamb.
11. Furring generally shall be at 2 ft. o.c. as noted, erected to
suit details, secured to nailing strips.
3.3 ERECTION
1. Frame, anchor, fasten, tie and brace members to provide
necessary strength and rigidity.
2. Countersink bolts where necessary to provide clearance for other
work.

1.3 DESCRIPTION
1. Supply all labour, materials, equipment, services and perform
all operations required to complete all finish carpentry, millwork
and fitment installation including the complete supply and
installation of all hardware, brackets, glass, mirrors, wire
hangers, installation of metal and wood doors and all other items,
to the full intent of the drawings and as herein specified.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
1. The Contractor executing work of this section shall have a
minimum of five (5) years continuous Canadian experience in
successful manufacture/fabrication and installation of work of type
and quality shown and specified. Submit proof of experience upon
Consultant's request.
2. The AWI / AWMAC Quality Standards Illustrated (QSI) including
supplements and modifications shall be used as a reference standard
and shall form part of this project specification. The Contractor
shall at all times have in his field office copies of this
manual.

3. All millwork shall be premium grade, as noted herein, in
accordance with QSI standards.
4. Supplements and modifications to the above standards as
indicated on the drawings or as specified herein shall govern this
work.
1.5 SHOP DRAWINGS
1. Submit shop drawings in accordance with Section 01300 -
Submittals.
2. Indicate details of construction, profiles, jointing, fastening
and other related details. Include layout with relation to
surrounding building components. Coordinate shop drawings with
related work. Shop drawings shall clearly indicate material being
supplied and shall show all connections, attachments, reinforcing,
anchorage and location of exposed fastenings. Submit schedule for
cabinet hardware.
3. Provide shop drawings to show interface with all built in
equipment and materials fastened to or mounted on millwork, whether
supplied by Section 06400 or other trade. Make special note to
verify, and to ensure all dimensions shown on the drawings are
maintained at site, taking care to make allowances for "no
tolerance" dimensions, specifically in areas where materials and
fitments have been fabricated by others, and non-adjustable
specialty items that are to be installed. Assume all
responsibilities for the accuracy, proper fitting and coming
together of the work as a whole, to produce a completely finished
area as intended by the drawings and these specifications.
4. Indicate all materials, thicknesses, finishes and
hardware.
5. Indicate locations of all service outlets in millwork.
6. Submit technical data sheets for materials and hardware for
approval.
1.6 SAMPLES
1. Submit samples in accordance with Section 01300 - Administrative
Requirements.
2. Submit duplicate colour samples of laminated plastic for colour
verification. Provide samples of fabricated metal accessories and
metal finishes, and any other material or item that may be required
for approval by the Consultant prior to fabrication or purchase, as
may be required.
3. Mock ups may be requested by Consultant to establish quality of
work. When requested, approved mock ups may form part of the
completed work. Approved mock ups shall become standard of
comparison for the remaining work, and shall not be destroyed or
moved until authorized by Consultant. Completed or partially

completed work, not conforming to the characteristics of the
approved mock ups shall be cause for rejection of such completed or
partially completed work. All rejected work shall be removed and
replaced with new work.
1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
1. Upon award of contract, the Contractor must immediately order
long lead items. Such as special hardware, plastic laminate,
special glass and mirrors, and the like, so that they will be
available when they are required.
2. Protect millwork against dampness and damage during and after
delivery.
3. Do not permit delivery of work to the site until area is
sufficiently dry so that wood work will not be damaged by excessive
changes in moisture content.
4. Co-ordinate deliveries to comply with construction schedule and
arrange ahead for under cover storage location.
5. Cover plastic laminate with heavy kraft paper and place in
corrugated cardboard cartons with all corners well padded to avoid
damage
6. Store millwork in ventilated areas, protected from extreme
changes of temperature or humidity.
7. Unsatisfactory materials shall be promptly removed from the
site.
8. Adequately protect the structure and work of other sections
during delivery, storage, handling and execution of the Work.
9. Provide tools, plant and other equipment required for the proper
execution of the Work.
1.8 WARRANTY
1. Warrant the plastic laminate work and millwork of this section
against defects in materials and workmanship in accordance with
General Conditions but for a period of two years, and agree to
repair or replace faulty materials or work which becomes evident
during warranty period without cost to the Owner. Defects shall
include but not limited to, opening of joints, cracking, shrinkage,
warpage, delamination of plastic laminate and veneers.
1.9 COORDINATION
1. Coordinate with trades that interface with the Work of this
Section.

For all other locations, use plywood to CSA 0121 M Grade “B”,
unless otherwise indicated on drawings. Thickness as indicated on
drawings.
6. Glue: Water - resistant urea-formaldehyde resin glue.
7. PVC Edging for all exposed horizontal and vertical edges
(counter tops, doors, drawers, shelves, etc) except where
premanufactured wood edge is indicated: 3 mm pvc edging thermally
glued. Colour to match laminate.
11. Grommets: 2 in. diameter Hafele model 429.99. Three colours to
be selected from manufacturer’s standard range.
12. Nails and staples: to CSA B111.
13. Miscellaneous Hardware: Provide all nails, screws, bolts,
anchors, special fastening devices, supports, brackets, corner
mouldings, shelf retainers, gusset plates, standards, hangers and
eye hooks, grommets , pins, and the like as required for
construction of millwork as indicated on drawings. Provide all
millwork hardware - pulls, glides, hinges, metal trims and
incidental framing components, braces, gussets, straps, and the
like. Hinges shall be concealed when door is closed and shall be
designed for size and weight of door indicated. Submit sample of
each type of hardware to Consultant for approval. Provide cabinet
door locks where indicated.
14. Hardware:
1. Door Catches: nylon roller spring catch or dual self aligning
permanent magnet type. Provide 2 catches on doors over 4 ft. high.
Ensure that door catches are of proper strength and are properly
adjusted to ensure that doors remain closed.
2. Drawer Guides: complete with integral stops to eliminate
accidental removal of drawer. Include provisions to prevent
rebounding action when doors are closed.
3. Drawer slides: For drawers 6 in. deep or less: Accuride No 3832
series. For drawers over 6 in. deep Accuride No. 3640.
4. Drawer Stops: Designed to permit easy removal and yet prevent
inadvertent drawer removal. Provide on all drawers. Locate on the
inside.
5. Pulls: For all other locations provide solid metal wire pulls

carry weight of door and ensure quiet operation. Elongated screw
holes on all leafs for vertical and horizontal adjustment. Finish:

1. Hinge requirements: Door height (minimum requirements) 2 hinges:
up to 36 in. 3 hinges: up to 5 ft. 0 in. 4 hinges: up to 7 ft. 0

2.2 MANUFACTURED UNITS
1. Construct cupboards and counters as indicated with 3/4 in.
plywood end gables, intermediate verticals, tops and bottoms.
Premanufactured carrier system where indicated on drawings. Fixed
shelves shall be housed into gables and divisions. Adjustable
shelves shall be set on angle clips on metal pilaster strips housed
into gables and divisions. Finish of all surfaces: shall be plastic
laminate. See drawings for locations of each. Interior of wood
veneer cabinets shall be plastic laminate. Interior of all drawers
shall be plastic laminate. See item 3, below for further detail.
Interior surface thicknesses shall balance exterior surfaces to
avoid warpage.
2. Shelving: 3/4 in. hardwood plywood with 3/8 in. thick solid
hardwood edge strip. Strips same width as plywood. Finish: Plastic
Laminate finish on all faces. See drawings for locations of each
finish.
3. Drawers: Drawer sides and fronts shall be 3/4 inch thick
plywood, backs ½ in. thick. Drawer bottoms 1/4 inch thick plywood,
grooved into sides and front and nailed to underside of drawer
backs. Front and back of drawer front and all faces of drawer
visible when the drawer is closed shall be plastic laminate. Use
plastic laminate backer sheets in locations concealed in the
finished work.
4. Cupboard Doors: For doors up to 30 in wide x 80 in high, 3/4
inch thick particle board with 3/4 in. x 1/4 in. solid hardwood
edge strips securely glued in place. Increase thickness of material
for larger doors. Doors shall be flush slab type, accurately fitted
and free of warp and twist. Finish on all faces: plastic laminate.

5. Where it is indicated on drawings that millwork is to support
equipment, design support system to suit weight of equipment
indicated. See Equipment Schedule and drawings for more
information.
2.3 FABRICATION AND WORKMANSHIP
1. Work shall be executed by skilled carpenters under the
supervision of a competent carpentry foreman. All items shall be
shop assembled, insofar as is practical.
2. Make thorough examination of drawings and details, check
anchorage, interfacing with work of other sections and other
factors influencing the installation of the work, and be fully
aware of requirements.
3. Millwork shall comply with the requirements for premium grade
work as specified in quality standards of AWMAC. Finished woodwork
shall be free from bruises, blemishes, mineral marks, knots, shakes
and other defects and shall be selected for uniformity of colour,
grain and texture.
4. Check access clearances at the site before assembling large
units or components in the mill for shipment to the project.
5. Jointing of shop assembled work shall be by means of mortise and
tenons, dowels, stub tenons, dovetails, dadoes, lock joints as
applicable for the jointing condition.
6. Be responsible for methods of construction and for ensuring that
materials are rigidly and securely attached and will not be
loosened by the work of other trades.
7. Fabricate the work in a manner which will permit expansion and
contraction of the materials without visible open joints.
8. Erect work plumb, level, square and to the required lines.
9. Fitments to be provided in quantities and in combinations of
units as called for on the floor plans and layouts of the rooms and
areas and to suit the actual job dimensions.
10. Accurately cut, mitre, fit and frame work together to produce
tight hairline joints, rigidly secured together in a permanent
manner using glue, blind screw fixing or nails. Use concealed glue
blocks for additional strength where possible.
11. Finished woodwork shall be in one piece wherever possible and
all trim shall be in long lengths. Where jointing is necessary in
the length the joints between pieces shall be scarfed, glued and
properly fastened. The material being jointed shall match
reasonably well for grain and colour where natural finish is
specified. Trim shall be accurately cut and mitred at all corners,
glued and properly fastened.

12. When a butt joint occurs, it shall be free from bends, dents,
improper cutting, and must appear flush from all angles of view.
All butt joints should be kept well below eye level.
13. Machine dressed work shall be properly machined using sharp
cutters, the finished work shall be free from drag, feathers,
slivers of roughness of any kind. Remove machine marks by
sanding.
14. Finished woodwork, millwork and fitments shall be carefully
hand sanded after installation to remove roughness, planer marks,
etc. Sanding shall be done with the grain of the wood and finished
with fine grit paper to leave a smooth scratch-free surface
suitable to receive shop finishing.
15. Nail heads in the finished surfaces shall be set with straight
shank nail sets. Screw and bolt heads in finished surfaces shall be
let into the work and capped with edge grain wood caps dressed and
finished flush.
16. Fitments shall be installed level, plumb and true and complete
in all respects.
17. Fit small scribe moulds of same material as fitment to hide
voids at junction of fitment to fitment and fitment to walls,
partitions, ceilings, furrings, etc.
2.4 PREPARATION
1. Millwork sub-contractor shall take all necessary action to
facilitate preparation of millwork, including site measurements to
establish sizes where dimensions are not available. Exercise all
precautions to verify figures shown on drawings before laying out
work, and ensure all dimensions on the site are compatible to all
fitment millwork indicated and/or detailed on the drawings.
2. Inspect surfaces over which the work of this section is
dependent for any irregularities detrimental to the application and
performance of the Work. Notify the Consultant in writing of all
conditions which are at variance with those of the Contract
Documents and/or detrimental to the proper and timely installation
of the work of this section. The decision regarding corrective
measures shall be obtained from the Consultant prior to proceeding
with the affected work.
3. Humidity in the building shall be checked with moisture reading
instruments if doubt exists that building is sufficiently dry and
ready to receive millwork. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory
conditions are corrected.
4. Commencement of work indicates acceptance of existing surfaces
and conditions.
5. Set nails and countersink screws, apply wood filler to
indentations, sand smooth and leave ready to receive finish.

6. Shop install cabinet hardware for doors, drawers and shelves.
Recess shelf standards unless noted otherwise. Pilasters for
adjustable shelves shall be finished in colour to match adjacent
plastic laminate finish to Consultant’s approval.
7. Shelving to cabinetwork to be adjustable unless otherwise
noted.
8. Provide cutouts for inserts, equipment, outlet boxes and other
fixtures.
9. Shop assemble work for delivery to site in size easily handled
and to ensure passage through building openings.
Part 3 Execution
1. Provide architectural woodwork to premium Quality Standards of
the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada
(AWMAC).
2. Provide and fit in place all furring, strapping, battens,
grounds and blocking required to provide adequate properly placed
fixing for all wood finishes, fitments as required for the work of
other trades.
3. Refer to drawings and co-ordinate with contractors of adjacent
work to establish sequence of installation or execution of each
other’s work. Pay particular attention to areas where materials are
prepared under this contract for other work to be applied or
installed by other Subcontractors.
4. Install prefinished millwork at locations shown on drawings.
Position accurately, level, plumb straight.
5. Fasten and anchor millwork securely.
6. Use draw bolts in counter top joints.
7. At junction of plastic laminate counter back splash and adjacent
wall finish, apply small bead of sealant.
8. Apply water resistant building paper over wood framing members
in contact with masonry or cementitious construction.
. 9. Fit hardware accurately and securely in accordance with
manufacturer's directions.

10. Provide all miscellaneous hardware items such as adjustable
shelf brackets and accessories, hooks, and the like as required to
complete the millwork.

11. Where primed work is cut at site for fitting, apply primer to
unprimed surfaces.
12. Plastic Laminate Work: Plastic laminate shall generally be
applied to cores of not less than 3/4 inch. To compensate for
stresses caused by facing sheet, ensure that all surfaces finished
in plastic laminate are backed in plastic laminate in colour to
Consultant’s selection. Grain direction for exposed laminate and
backing sheet shall be parallel. Apply pvc edging. Chamfer edges
uniformly at approximately 20 deg. using machine router. At “L”
shaped corners, mitre plastic laminate to outside corners.
Accurately fit members together to provide tight and flush butt
joints in true planes. Provide cut outs as required for inserts
fixtures and fittings. Use radiused corners and chamfer edges
around cut outs to avoid chipping laminate. Post form laminate work
to details indicated. Provide same core and laminate profiles to
provide continuous support and bond for entire surface. Adjacent
parts of continuous laminate work shall match in colour and
pattern.
13. Radius inside corners of cutouts 1/8 in.
14. Waterproof coved areas on countertops. Rabbet and groove
construction shall be used, with waterproofing adhesive.
15. Predrill holes required in laminate with a sharp drill
bit.
16. Plastic laminate shall be applied using a minimum of 20 lb/in2
pressure. Special conditions are recommended by each adhesive
manufacturer and should be followed. Pressure shall first be
applied to the centre of the sheet, working towards the edges to
avoid trapping air which can cause surface bubbles and
blisters.
17. During the winter months in a dry atmosphere, the plastic
laminate should be conditioned to the atmosphere of the building
for at least 48 hours before it is installed.
18. Provide filler strips for closing space between cabinets and
walls and ceilings of same material and finish as cabinets. Job
fabricated fillers are not acceptable.
3.2 DOORS AND FRAMES - GENERAL
1. Install fire labelled doors and frames in accordance with ULC
requirements.
2. Set frames in place, temporarily brace until built-in to
adjacent construction. Remove bracing following permanent
anchorage.
3. Co-operate with other trades in locating frames. Shim up where
required to ensure proper alignment and dimensions from finished
floor to door head.
4. Set frames plumb, square and level, maintaining widths and
heights. Anchor frames securely to studs using minimum of 3 anchors
per jamb for jambs up to 7

ft. high and minimum of 4 anchors per jamb for jambs over 7 ft.
high.
5. Brace frames rigidly in position while building in. Remove
temporary steel shipping jamb spreaders. Install wood spreaders at
third points of frame, rebate height to maintain frame width.
Provide vertical support at centre of head for openings exceeding 4
ft. in width. Remove wood spreaders after frames have been built
in.
6. Make allowance for deflection to ensure structural loads are not
transmitted to frame.
7. Pack voids in door jamb and head which occur at exterior walls
with insulation.
8. Caulk perimeter of frames between frame and adjacent
material.
9. Maintain continuity of air barrier.
10. Hang doors to swing shut with 1/8 in. clearance at heads and at
jambs and 3/8 in. clearance over finished floor surfaces. Install
doors so that face on opening side is kept recessed 1/16 in. after
bumpers are installed.
11. Install doors and hardware in accordance with hardware
templates and manufacturer's instructions.
3.3 WOOD DOORS
1. Be responsible for damage to doors until acceptance by
Consultant after installation.
2. Fit and install doors complete with all hardware. Be responsible
for the correct fitting of all doors. Warped or damaged doors will
be rejected.
3. Maintain an even clearance not exceeding 3/16 in. between door
and frame on all sides to allow free action of doors.
4. After trimming doors, have painter seal top and bottom edges of
doors.
5. Re-adjust and check doors upon completion of the building.
Correct any restriction to free action of door.
6. If lock or latch sets are installed before doors receive final
finish by painter, remove such hardware prior to painter's work and
re-install when finish completed.
7. Where door frames are not satisfactory for the proper
installation of doors, correct condition prior to
installation.

3.4 FINISH HARDWARE
1. Take delivery of door finish hardware not provided by this
section and install. Check each item as received.
2. Install finish hardware for fire rated doors in accordance with
NFPA 80 and ULC requirements.
3. Set, fit and adjust hardware according to manufacturer’s
templates and instructions to ensure that hardware operates freely.
Protect installed hardware from damage and paint spotting.
4. Install all hardware for hollow metal doors including hinges.
Prepare wood doors for installation with required levels,
clearances and mortises for hardware. Install wood doors, door
grilles and all applicable hardware
5. Predrill kickplates and doors before attachment of plates. Apply
with water resistant adhesive and counter sunk stainless steel
screws.
3.5 SHOP FINISHING
1. Do all shop priming and sealing of cabinets, fitments, casework
shelving units, including back priming, and back priming of trim,
etc., all as indicated and as scheduled on the drawings.
2. All surfaces of fitments, casework, shelving units, etc., shall
be shop finished.
3. During installation, immediately in the instances where sealed
or primed work is cut during the fitting or installation, a coat of
sealer or primer as applicable shall be applied to the resulting
raw surfaces.
3.6 CLEANING
1. Clean millwork inside cupboards and drawers and outside
surfaces.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
1. Deliver and store materials in original wrappings and containers
with manufacturer's seals and labels, intact. Protect from

1.6 ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
1. Comply with requirements of Workplace Hazardous Materials
Information System (WHMIS) regarding use, handling, storage, and
disposal of hazardous materials; and regarding labelling and
provision of material safety data sheets acceptable to Labour
Canada.
2. Conform to manufacturer's recommended temperatures, relative
humidity, and substrate moisture content for application and curing
of sealants including special conditions governing use.
3. Ventilate area of work to minimum requirements recommended by
sealant manufacturer and if requested by Consultant provide
additional ventilation or regulate time of work to suit Owner’s
requirements.
