Manistee County Surveyor Patrick Bentley keeps a close eye on the students tomake sure they properly utilize the equipment.

Hands-on lessonBear Lake High School trigonometry

students put classroom work to the testByKEN GRABOWSKI

    Staff Writer

BEAR LAKE Manistee County sur-veyor Pat Bentley often remembers sittingat a desk in his high school trigonometryclass wondering where he would ever useany of that material when he was in thereal world.

What he never imagined was severalyears later it would be something hewould be using on a daily basis in his jobas a surveyor. When Bentley heard aboutthe Trig Star program several years agohe quickly realized it would be the perfectvenue for teaching high school studentsabout the importance of trigonometry.

For the past eight years, Bentley has

been visiting the functions, statistics andtrigonometry class of Lavon Jonson atBear Lake Schools to present the Trig Starprogram. It is something Jonson and thestudents have met with open arms.

The Trig Star program is sponsoredby the National Society of ProfessionalSurveyors and has surveyors coming intotheir local schools and introducing thestudents to the surveying and mappingprofessions, Bentley said. I came in yes-terday, and we did an introduction on thebasics and how we use math in it. I canremember being in a math class like thatin high school and having no clue whereI would use any of this, but I ended upusing it daily in my job.

Bentley said the second part of theprogram is the one the students reallylook forward to taking part in. It is theopportunity to gain that hands-on experi-ence.

The second day is when we have thefun because I bring the surveying equip-ment in, and we use it outside. They turnsome angles, take some measurements, and we create some problems for them tosolve. They actually gather the data, andsolve the problem from the trigonometryshe is teaching them.

Another part of the program is in thenear future Bentley will return to Jonsonsclassroom to administer the Trig Star test. This is an opportunity for the students tocompete against others across the stateand nation for cash prizes.

It is a one-hour universal exam that isgiven all over the state, Bentley said. Ata small school like Bear Lake they have

between eight and 15 kids that are goingagainst some big schools that may have acouple hundred kids taking part in it.

Jonson pointed out that Bentleysvisits are a perfect way to drive home theimportance of trigonometry beyond theclassroom.

It gives them a taste of the realworld, Jonson said. The competition onthe test is pretty good, and we have a stu-dent in the class this year whose brotherdid real well on it a few years ago, and sheis hoping on beating his record.

Pat does a really good job of dem-onstrating, and showing what they havelearned.

Jonson said that she hopes to continuethe program into the future because of thegood response the students have given itover the past eight years. It is another out-standing example of hands-on learning.

Students view the readings that thecomputer on the equipment prints out.

Before taking to thewaterways, plot a course tosafety. GEICO Insurance

Agency and the U.S. CoastGuard recommend the fol-lowing:

    1. Always wear a lifejacket The U.S. CoastGuard requires that all rec-reational boats must carryone Coast Guard-approvedlife jacket for each personaboard. Life jackets should

be tested yearly and mustbe the appropriate size forthe intended user.

    2. Check the weatherforecast A calm, sunnyday can quickly turn intoa deadly storm. Check the

weather forecast beforeventuring out. Also, keepa radio on board to receive

    weather updates and advi-sories.

    3. Take a boater safetycourse Learn the properregulations and safety

precautions. Most statesrequire operators to passboater safety requirementsand display their safety cer-tificate.

    4. Dont drink andboat According to theU.S. Coast Guard, boating

while intoxicated (BWI)is a leading cause of fatal

boating accidents. Alcoholaffects judgment and vision, increasing the likelihood ofan accident. Its illegal tooperate a boat while underthe influence of alcohol.

    5. Preventative boat

maintenance Regularlychecking your equipmentfor safety ensures that it

will perform better, reducedepreciation and save oncostly repairs.

    6. Operate at a safespeed Excessive speed-ing is a leading cause of allreported boating accidents.Operate your boat at a safespeed and stay aware oftraffic density and naviga-tion hazards.

    7. Learn the rules of thewaterway Waterwaysdont have traffic signals

to direct boater traffic. Soboaters must depend oneach other by observingsafety precautions and navi-gational rules to preventmishaps.

    8. Hypothermia is a risk Avoid entering the water

when the temperature isbelow 59 F. Symptomsinclude a decrease in bodytemperature, uncontrolled

breathing and unconscious-ness. When planning yourtrip, pack dry clothing in a

    waterproof bag and never

go out alone.9. Install a carbon mon-oxide detector Internalcombustion engines on

boats emit a harmful, odorless gas called carbonmonoxide. The symptomsare similar to seasickness oralcohol intoxication.

    10. Create a float plan Inform a friend or fam-ily member of your boatingplans and when you areexpected to return.

    NORTH AMERICANPRECIS SYNDICATE

If youre one of the mil-ions of Americans who suf-

fers from a skin disease likeeczema or psoriasis, thenmost likely you have beenprescribed a topical corti-costeroid treatment to helpmanage your condition.

Topical corticosteroidsare one of the most use-ful medications for treat-ng eczema and psoriasis

and come in a variety ofstrengths (potencies) andformulations (creams, oint-ments, lotions, gels, foams, mousses and shampoos).1

When talking to yourdoctor about which topicalcorticosteroid is right for

    you, consider the followingfactors:

Which strength is rightfor you? Not all strengthswork the same for everypatient.1 Medium to highpotency topical cortico-steroids tend to be themost effective for treatingeczema.1

Do you prefer acream or ointment? Often, patients find creams morecosmetically acceptablethan greasy ointment for-mulations, even thoughointments are generallyconsidered more potentthan cream formulations ofthe same strength.1

Do you need to avoidpreservatives or fragrances?Fragrances or preservatives, such as propylene glycol, are often found in creamsand can cause irritation, stinging and allergic reac-tions.1

Does your doctor havea sample for you to try?

rial sizes can offer sig-nificant benefits to both thephysician and the patient in

    establishing the appropriatecare protocol.

Physicians often offertheir patients triamcino-one, the most frequently

prescribed topical corti-costeroid2. One option isfragrance and preserva-tive-free Trianex 0.05%(Triamcinolone AcetonideOintment), a mid-potencytriamcinolone ointment for-mulated with a unique basethat provides the strengthof an ointment with thefeel of a cream. Trianexs indicated for the relief

of itching and inflamma-tion caused by certain skinconditions that respond totreatment with corticoste-roids.

Ask your doctor ifrianex is right for you. If

you are prescribed Trianex, you may be eligible to takeadvantage of the TrianexInstant Savings Card-asittle as a $5 co-pay on each

of your next three prescrip-tions for Trianex-regardlessof whether you pay cashor have insurance (some

imitations may apply).he program expires on

    December 31, 2012. Visitwww.trianex-usl.com foradditional details.

Trianex 0.05%(Triamcinolone AcetonideOintment) is indicated forthe relief of itching andnflammation caused by

certain skin conditions thatrespond to treatment withcorticosteroids. It should be

sed as directed by a physi-cian for the skin conditionfor which it was prescribed.

    Important SafetyInformation

    Systemic absorptionof topical corticosteroids

as produced a reversibleormone disorder called

Cushings syndrome, hyper-lycemia, and glucosurian some patients, includ-ng children. Children may

absorb proportionally largeramounts of topical cortico-steroids and thus be moresusceptible to systemic

toxicity. Administration oftopical corticosteroids tochildren should be limitedto the smallest amount nec-essary.

The treated skin areashould not be bandagedor otherwise covered or

wrapped so as to be occlu-sive, unless directed bythe physician. Do not usetight-fitting diapers or plas-tic pants on a child beingtreated in the diaper area,as these garments may con-stitute occlusive dressings.

Patients should reportany signs of local adversereactions, especially underocclusive dressings. Localadverse reactions infre-quently reported with topi-cal corticosteroids include

burning, itching, irritation, inflammation, dryness, infection, excessive hairgrowth, acne-like lesions, lightened skin color, allergiccontact dermatitis, break-down of the skin, stretchmarks, and heat rash. Ifirritation develops, topicalcorticosteroids should bediscontinued and appropri-ate therapy instituted.

    NORTH AMERICANPRECIS SYNDICATE

You may find you canhave more time and moneyfor lifes delights when

you heed these 10 hints onwarm-weather fun:

    1. Stay safe at poolside.Keep each child within armslength at all times; designatean adult as water watcher;ensure that the pools fenceis always locked; and install

    both gate and pool alarms.

    2. Liven up the land-scape. Use shrubs for form, flowering plants for colorand perennials for cheery

    blooms with little tending.

    3. Beautify your back-yard furnishings. If mildewappears on outside chairsand tables, wash the fabricand dry it in the sun. Thenmix together equal partslemon juice and salt; spreadthis on the stain. Dry thefabric in the sun again andrinse thoroughly.

    4. Keep toys and toolsneat. Two simple rules foravoiding backyard clutter:

Air out wet things by stor-ing them in big mesh bags

or open-weave crates. Tossall the little bits into a clearplastic shoe organizer hungon a fence or nearby wall.

    5. Exercise your right toa water workout. Accordingto the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention,

just 21 minutes a day ofexercising in a pool can cut

your risk of chronic dis-ease. Strength, enduranceand balance are all ben-efits of using water as theresistance. A typical water

exercise session of 40 to 50minutes can burn up to 600calories.

    6. Keep pool main-tenance simple. You canhave a pool thats sparklingclear and inviting with justthree simple steps. A newproduct called SmartPAKfrom BioGuard provides thethree-step care system inone simple kit. It includeschlorine, shock and algicidealong with easy-to-read dos-age charts to ensure that

    busy pool owners have the

    items they need.

    7. Enjoy your special spatime. Place flameless LEDcandles around the edge ofthe spa. Take tunes into thespa with a floating speakerthat connects wirelessly toan MP3 player. Add a sooth-ing scent to the water withsingle-use aromatherapypacks.

    8. Protect the environ-ment. Always keep your pool

    water balanced with the

right combination of chemi-cals. Overworked filters andmotors waste energy andhike utility bills.

    9. Keep pets safe. Beforeyou let a dog jump in, makesure he can get out withoutdamaging the pool or hurt-ing himself. Also check

with the vet. Swimming ina pool should be appropri-ate for the breed. Monitorthe water. A typical dog can

be the equivalent of about50 swimmers in the pool, meaning extra vigilance

is needed to maintain thechemical balance.

    10. Keep things clean.A good pool care strategyinvolves circulation, filtra-tion, cleaning, testing andchemistry. A BioGuard deal-er can provide computerized

water testing and recom-mend the best care systemfor your pool.
