Manistee Catholic Central students are dwarfed by a massive sculpture at theMeijer Gardens and Sculpture.

    BYKEN GRABOWSKI

    ASSOCIATE EDITOR

The Manistee Catholic Central fourthand fifth grade classes made a field tripto Grand Rapds this spring to visit theFredrick Meijer Gardens and SculpturePark and to view the documentary on bugsat the IMAX Celebration Cinemas.

That trip fit perfectly into the science

curriculum, as students were able to seethe life cycle of different insects includingthe a mantis and a butterfly. Students wereresearching insects in their classrooms, and creating PowerPoints and papers thatsupport their findings.

The IMAX 3D experience reallybrought home things in a big way with a50-foot by 70-foot screen that is coatedin a special silver paint, which directs thelight reflected off of it for 3D films.

The screen is flat, but has a slight cur-ature that helps extend it to the edge ofeoples peripheral vision. That screen isonstructed of a special diffused vinyl per-orated with thousands of tiny holes. This

llows sound to pass through freely, givinghe screen acoustical transparency. The 3D effect is created by using two

projectors to send two pictures to thescreen. Without glasses, a person wouldsee doublevision. The glasses separatethe images so that those viewing it see onepicture with one eye, and the other with

your other eye. The result is a picture withnot only height and width, but also depth three dimensions and 3D.

After the IMAX viewing, the studentsenhanced their learning on insects when

they traveled to Fredrick Meijer Gardensand Sculpture Park. At that location, they entered the Butterfly House wherestudents could walk around with manydifferent types of butterflies up close andpersonal.

Butterflies Are Blooming is MeijerGardens most popular annual exhibitionand the largest temporary tropical butter-fly exhibit in the nation. Visitors are ableto mingle with more than 6,000 tropical

butterflies flying free in the 15,000-square-foot Lena Meijer Conservatory.

The exhibition boasts more than 40different species from the Far East, Africaand Central America. Each week hundreds

of chrysalises arrive at Meijer Gardens

When do ducks wear Hawaiian shirts? One of the funny

little jobs we have at thechamber office is order-ing the ducks for the duckrace, one of the ManisteeNational Forest Festivalsignature events. Youmight think that a rubberducky is a rubber ducky,

but thats just not so. Thereare pirate ducks, patri-otic ducks and this year wehave Luau ducks, with leisand Hawaiian shirts and ofcourse, sunglasses.

The duck race attractshundreds of families todowntown Manistee andthe riverwalk to watchmore than a thousandducks being dropped offthe Maple Street bridgeand bob down the ManisteeRiver toward the finish lineust before the Elks Lodge.

Its one of the honors of my

job to scoop the winningduck out of the river, fol-lowed by the second andthird place finishers. Each

year we turn to our friendsat Insta-Launch, who arestanding by with nets tofish the 1,197 runners upout of the river.

The duck race begins at6 p.m. on Thursday, June30. Depending on the rivercurrent and wind, the win-ning duck should cross the
