MANISTEE TheWest Shore Medical CenterAuxiliary took on a pledgeof $152,000 in July of2009 to fund a new ambu-lance to add to the hospitalfleet to replace one thatwas to be retired.

Many have probablyseen this vehicle on theroad servicing the ManisteeCounty area with the mes-sage on the side Proudlyfunded by the West ShoreMedical Center Auxiliary.

Throughout the yearthe auxiliary has variousfundraisers. During theyear when accumulatedfunds make it possible, theauxiliary presented BurtParks, CEO of WSMC witha check toward fulfillingthis pledge.

    At its recent holiday

meeting on Tuesday, Dec.14, at the Bungalow Inn,the auxiliary presentedParks with checks total-ing $15,000 from the Bitsof Cheer Gift Shop, andfunds raised from its recentSleighbell Craft Show, BakeSale and Bazaar, bringingthe total remaining on thepledge to $70,000.

Theauxiliary sincerelyappreciates the communitysupport of their fundraising

    efforts.Also that summer,

auxiliary member EileenHawkins presented themembership with theidea of having somethingthat was ongoing whereamounts of money givenand accumulated wouldalso add to the pledgemonies from the largerfundraisers. She had puttogether a display showinga picture of the new ambu-lance with an attached lock

box for people to contributeto the fund whenever theycould. The group voted toput the display near theBits of Cheer Gift Shop inthe lobby of WSMC.

There have been someinteresting stories of howsome funds came to the

    box.

Karen Kimble, one ofthe auxiliary patient trans-porters was talking aboutfunding the ambulance. Her patient asked wherethis display was as she

would like to contribute.Kimble wheeled her downto the display where shedeposited $10.

A while back, EstelleMessner, called auxiliarypresident Betty Tyson toask how she could con-

tribute. Messner said whatprompted her contribu-tion was, I was recentlytransported by ambulanceto WSMC, as well as hadsome of other familymembers over the years.I thought of how valuablethis service is to the com-munity. Estelles kind con-tribution was added to themonies collected from theQuiet Sentinel.

One emptying of thelock box held a tiny plasticzip bag with $1.33 in it as ifsomeone thoughtfully con-tributed what they could. One of the auxiliary mem-

bers, Sue Pearce, gave halfthe proceeds from her yardsale. And some of the auxil-iary members who work inthe Bits of Cheer Shop haveseen customers deposit

their loose change from apurchase. It all adds up tohelp meet the $152,000goal.

The WSMC Auxiliary isopen to all and new mem-

bers are very welcome. There are many areas to

be served. If someoneis interested in joining, applications are available

by calling Brooke Stevens,WSMC Auxiliary liaison at(231) 398-1270.

    6/6

People often thinkthat those of us who workin the media dont havefeelings when it comes tocertain stories we reporton, but the truth of thematter is we do react thesame way as others tocertain events.

    This weekend one

story that left me feeling like I was kickedin the stomach was the news of the tragicshooting in Tuscon, Ariz. That was wherea single gunman killed six people, and

wounded 14 others including DemocraticCongresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. One ofthe victims killed was a 9-year-old girl andin my opinion, anyone who cant feel some-thing for that isnt breathing.

It was another example of a grow-ing concern in America over conduct ofpeople taking differing political beliefsto the extreme level. I think most people

will agree that in the past decade, the waypeople react to politics has changed and notfor the better. The ability of people to spout

off via the Internet, call-in radio showsand television has created what sometimesfesters into an out-of-control anger fromcertain individuals.

The vast majority of us are rational peo-ple who are able to write it off as being justpolitics. However, for the less mentallystable it creates a venue for their radical

views and festers a frightening need to dosomething about it.

Disagreement of political issues is some-thing that can be traced to the first days ofDemocracy. For most of us, the ability toagree to disagree and then move on nevergoes beyond that point.

Political debate in its purest sense is nota bad thing. Putting out ideas and pointing

out the merits or downsides to them can bea healthy process of government.

However, what we have witnessed morein the past few years is often an obsession

with my way is the only way line of think-ing from some political figures and theircult-like followers.

That is wrong. That is what creates what happened last

Saturday in Tuscon.Someone asked me if I was surprised at

the news of the shooting, and to be quitehonest my answer is, no. I find it repre-hensible, but it doesnt surprise me that wefinally dropped to that level as a society.

Last fall in Big Rapids, we witnessed

what in my opinion was a very disturbedMichigan State University student push acherry pie in Michigan Sen. Carl Levinsface. Yes, it was just a pie, but it couldhave easily been a gun in her hand as sheapproached him.

And why?Because you dont agree with a persons

political views? That is wrong. This country was founded on certain

rights and one of those is freedom ofspeech. You shouldnt have to fear for your

life because your opin-ion differs from anotherperson.

Some have alreadyspeculated that this inci-dent may change the waypolitical officials appearin public, and that moresecurity is needed dur-ing those appearances. I

hope it doesnt come to that as it is impor-tant for politicians to have interactions

with their constituents. It is a vital part ofthe governing process because they are the

voice of the people. You have two options if you dont agree

with some politicians views. The first is tovocally provide an alternative view, but doit in a civil manner. The second is if you

want to remove them from office then do soat the voting booth not with a weapon.

In an ironic twist of fate, last weekI interviewed our former CongressmanPete Hoekstra who is stepping down after18 years in Congress. One of the topics

we talked about that will appear in my

Lifestyles story this Saturday was his abil-ity to debate with the public in forums andtown hall meetings. He stressed to me howimportant that was to him to hear the dif-fering views on a subject.

One of the things I always admiredabout Hoekstra was his man in the arenaapproach to politics in his district. Healways wanted to hear what the constitu-ents had to say about the issues, and never

backed down from a good debate in thosemeetings.

He pointed out that in his 18 years inoffice, people would often disagree withhis beliefs. However, he quickly added theyseldom became mean spirited, and he neverfelt threatened.

What concerns me is there were a fewtimes I covered some of those meetings

when it got close to being much more thanjust spirited debate. That is scary to me, notjust from a view of society, but from some-one who actually has to sit in that room.

Something that plants the seeds in theminds of the mentally unstable is the rheto-ric we hear spouting from the mouths ofpoliticians, political analysts and the media. They often give the impression that all islost if a certain legislation passes or fails, and the opposing political party isnt justthe opposition they are the enemy.

It is time for the great silent majorityof this country to step forward and voice

its opinion in this matter and to say thatbehavior of this kind will not be toleratedfrom our politicians, political analysts, themedia and the public. Until that majorityspeaks up in a loud and clear voice it isntgoing to stop.

Hopefully, we will start moving in thatdirection by the time I...

    See you next Wednesday.
