The weight and circuit training class began on Oct. 11, and participants (picturedhere on stationary bikes) combined weight and cardio, interchanging activities inshort intervals.

    ONEKAMA When the $14 million

bond project for the Onekama ConsolidatedSchools was proposed, a big component wasto create a community center.

The vision included a walking track, fitness center and activities room whereclasses could be held to enrich peoples livesthrough increased health and well-being. Anew art room was also built as a part of theproject, and plans to utilize that were alsoin place.

This month, Onekama school boardmember Leslie Acton said the vision is verynearly complete. The health enrichmentclasses began on Oct. 11, and include indoorcycling, weight and circuit training and abs, core and more.

In addition to the fitness classes,Onekama is offering classes in paintingtechniques, Google Docs and CPR.

So far, Acton said the response to theprogram has been good on two fronts.

(The response) has been pretty good, she said. We have people in every class andwe have teachers, community members, parents teaching classes and so its been agood response for instructors also.

In the future, Acton said additionalclasses will be added to the schedule includ-ing yoga, Jazzercise, woodshop, potterymaking and drawing to name a few.

I think, she added, even by word-of-mouth, this will get to be even bigger andwell be able to use all the facilities that we

have. The activities room, which Acton said

has diverse opportunities for use, was con-verted from the old weight room. It housesthe stationary bikes that are used in theindoor cycling class, and was outfitted withthe speakers from the old gym and a projec-tor and screen were installed.

The latter two are also used for indoorcycling. While cycling, class attendees aretreated to sights like the French countryside, projected before them on a large screen.

    Literally, youre seeing scenery, Acton

said, adding the visual aides go hand-in-hand with the actual work out. When thecountryside goes uphill, for example, shesaid, the instructor then tells the class, crank down on your resistance, pedal fastfor 30 seconds. Ive not had a chance totake the class yet, but I have heard it isgreat.

There is also a new weight center at theschool, however Acton said it wont be gen-erally open to the public because of safetyconcerns.

Obviously, our athletes will be in hereusing this, she said. And I think wellprobably run a couple classes, that some-

body can be there to supervise whats goingon in here.

The weight and activities rooms were thelast two portions of the bond project to becompleted, and Acton said it feels good tohave them done and have the classes begun.

The programing, she added, has beenpulled together by volunteers, many of

whom didnt have any experience planninga community center.

No one really had any fitness experi-ence, she said. However, quite fatefully,a woman named LeAnn Burger recentlymoved to the community. Burger had volun-teered at a community recreation center inOklahoma and is a certified fitness instruc-tor, so offered to teach the fitness classes.

She moved to the community in May,Acton said. It was unbelievable. We openedup the fitness center in June and literally,

we were just OK, weve got to open, wevegot to get this right and in she walked and, from day one, has just helped us so much. Its been wonderful.

All the classes except painting havealready started, but Acton said anyone

whos interested can call the schools stu-dent services office at (231) 889-5521 to seeif space is still available. The school will hostthree sessions of classes each school year,

with the next beginning in January, andanother following in April.

Though Acton knew the project centeredaround creating a community center, itsalready provided an unexpected benefit toher personally after 10 years of living inthe community, shes meeting new people.

After a while in Onekama, she said, you feel like you know everybody and its

been nice to meet people that way.

Landowners with invasive spe-cies concerns now have a contactperson for help with identificationand removal options for invasiveplants.

Invasive species are organismsintroduced to our area from otherparts of the world that are causingeconomic or environmental harm. They have not co-evolved with thenative plants and animals of theregion, and typically out-competethe native species because they haveno natural predators to curb theirgrowth. The result of an alien plantinvasion is often the staggeringloss of native biodiversity. Invasivespecies are a serious threat to theeconomy of this area, which is soheavily dependent on tourism tonatural areas.

    Liz Padalino was appointed as

the Northwest Michigan CWMAInvasive Species Coordinator forManistee, Benzie, and Leelanaucounties in mid-September. ACWMA, or Cooperative Weed

Management Area, is a group oforganizations and individualsinvolved in invasive species control,

with the aim of improving com-munication and sharing resources.

The CWMA is focused on control-ling the spread of garlic mustard,a plant introduced from Europe asan edible green to New York in the1860s. It escaped from householdgardens and is now a serious forestinvader.

My role as invasive speciesprogram coordinator is to organizeand train volunteers who will be anactive force on the ground, saysPadalino. We will need interestedgroups to scout for garlic mustardand map the areas using a GPS.

Padalino graduated from theUniversity of Michigan in 2009

with a B.S. degree in the Program

in the Environment. She worked asan ecological restoration intern atthe Nichols Arboretum in Ann arborfor three years, and served as an

    AmeriCorps volunteer with Huron

Pines, a non-profit conservationorganization in Grayling, Michigan. This year, Liz will be conductingoutreach and education about inva-sive species, organizing and training

volunteers, and applying for fund-ing to support future programs.Watch for workshops, trainings, andeducational programs scheduled forthis winter and spring.

This is an exciting position, andits a new one for the area, saysPadalino. Three counties is a hugearea to cover, but with the commu-nity energy and volunteer involve-ment I have seen thus far, I think

we will really be able to have a hugeimpact on preserving Michigans

    biodiversity.Contact Padalino at the Manistee

Conservation District on Mondays,Tuesdays, and Fridays at (231) 889-

4761 or email [email protected]. For a calendar of upcomingevents and additional informationon invasive plants, visit the CWMA

Despite this warm fallweather that we are allenjoying, the 22nd annual

    Victorian SleighbellParade & Old Christmas

    Weekend is just aroundthe corner.

Scheduled for Dec.2 to 5, the festival torch

has been passed from theManistee Area Chamberof Commerce whichhas coordinated the event

for a number of years - tothe Manistee Main StreetDowntown Development

    Authority (MSDDA) forthe 2010 event.

We shadowed theChamber last year interms of making the eventhappen and how all the

finances work, saysTravis Alden, MSDDADirector. With the cen-terpiece of the event - theparade - as well as manyother aspects of it tak-ing place downtown, itonly made sense for theMSDDA to take the reinson this event and wehave some great thingsplanned.

The MSDDAsMarketing & PromotionsCommittee has met mul-tiple times already to get

    the planning going, and

is now in the process oflocking in events for thefestival.

The committee doeshave some new thingsplanned which will be verexciting, notes Alden. But there are manythings that have made this

event so special over theyears, and we definitelydont want to lose those.

A total of 10,000 eventbrochures will be distrib-uted throughout the area, and substantial advertis-ing will be done as well.

A website for the eventis in the works, which

will include completeschedule information, parade entry forms, andmore. It will be located onthe Downtown Manistee

    SCOTTVILLE Anexhibit of original works

by abstract artist ManierreDawson (1887 to 1969) and

biographical panels abouthis life and contributionsto the art world will remainin the Manierre DawsonGallery on the West ShoreCommunity College campusthrough November.

The didactic exhibition, titled Manierre Dawson:Engineer/Artist, traces theevolution of his work andshows how elements of hispaintings leading up to andincluding his first abstrac-tions and his conceptionof abstract art itself are

directly related to his civilengineering training. Theseries of photographic pan-els are designed to appealto artists, engineers and thegeneral public.

Dawson was a 55-year resident of RivertonTownship (Mason County,Michigan), and his 20thcentury modernism chal-lenged his viewers precon-ceived ideas of art and, untilrecently, has been one ofhistorys most overlooked

American artists. In 1910,he produced a series ofseven abstract composi-tions, making him the first

    American artist to paintabstractly.

    Manierre Dawson: engineer/artistexhibits through November

Much of the exhibit isthe result of ten years ofresearch by Dr. Randy Ploogof Penn State University.Ploog will deliver two lec-tures focusing on Dawsonslife in West Michigan onOct. 28, at 12:30 p.m. and 7p.m. in the colleges CenterStage Theater.

Dawson was not moti-vated by fame or financialreward, he was driven topaint and carve for no rea-son except for his desire tocreate. He found inspirationin his engineering coursesand his Michigan orchards, far from the mainstreamartistic communities ofParis or New York, says

    Ploog.Ploog is an art histo-

rian whose research hasfocused on Dawson fornearly 15 years. He haspublished a number ofessays on Dawson includingthe exhibition catalogues,Manierre Dawson: AmericaPioneer of Abstraction

Art (New York: HollisTaggart Galleries, 1999)and Manierre Dawson: NewRevelations (Chicago: HollisTaggart Galleries, 2003).

    He has also lec-

tured on the artist at theNational Gallery of Art,Washington D.C.; the PeggyGuggenheim Collection,

    Venice, Italy; the Newberry

Library, Chicago; theChicago ArchitectureFoundation; and at VirginiaTech University.

Stronach Townships initi-ated a series of community-wide discussions focusingon new opportunities forgrowth, collaboration, com-munity sustainability andeconomic prosperity.

The community is in themiddle of a fundamentalshift from the old economyto a new economy. Localleaders recognize that thisserious threats to manycommunities, such asincreasing unemployment, population loss, rising
