    SeeWALKpage 5

I cant remember thefirst time I saw or wentacross the Mackinac Bridge. It was probably sometimein the 1970s.

But, it wasnt until Ibecame a Michigander inthe mid-1980s that thebridge and I became goodfriends crossing probablyat least twice a year. Maybeonly once on a bad year.

Ive heard that somepeople are afraid to driveor ride across, and truthbe told, there may have

been a time when I was abit leery that high aboveLake Michigan. Im sure Igripped the steering wheel alittle tighter after the Yugoblew or skidded over the36-inch railing in 1989.

    Photos by Dave Yarnell/News Advocate

The skies were cloudy and the temperatures on the cool side but everyoneseemed to enjoy the walk just the same.

What should be the roleof the federal governmentin public education?

This is the topic that theLeague of Women Voters(LWV) Manistee County

will be discussing at theThursday, Sept.15 program. This national league studyfocuses on the role of thefederal government in ourschools and the matter ofequity for all students inour public school system. Some questions that will

be discussed and debated---Should we have a nation-ally mandated curriculum?

    Do you think the cur-

rent role of the federalgovernment in public edu-cation is much too smallor much too large?

At the grassroots levelthe LWV studies issues ofnational, state, and localimportance, comes to aconsensus, then takesa position on the issues

based on that consensus.Plan to attend this LWV

program to make yourvoice heard. This leagueprogram will be held at theeducation center., Room. Aof the West Shore MedicalCenter at 7 p.m. The publicis invited and encouragedto attend this program.

    Public education has

been getting a lot of atten-tion recently...both posi-tive and negative. Public

education has never beena more important topic. Astrong democracy dependsupon a well educatedpublic. Public schools arean American institution

with rich history, amazingachievements and societal

    worth.The LWV is a nonpar-

tisan political organiza-tion for women and men, encourages informed andactive participation in gov-ernment, works to increaseunderstanding of public

policy issues and influ-ences public policy throughcitizen education andadvocacy. The League doesnot support or oppose can-didates or political partiesat any level of government,

but always works on vitalissues of concern to mem-

bers and the public. TheLeague mobilizes citizenaction for a better America.

industry are no small pota-toes, ranking second amongthe nations private employ-ers with 12.8 million jobs, forecasted by the NationalRestaurant Association toadd 1.3 million jobs in thenext 10 years. The countrys960,000 restaurants pro-

vide jobs for 10 percent ofthe U.S. workforce.

As part of the week-longcamp, Putney worked witha fellow student to make

Peach Soup Shooters andPeach Chips and GrilledChicken Quesadillas that

were prepared to the lik-ing of her classmates andclass instructors under the

watchful eye of executivechef Scott Bova.

Another day thatwill live in infamy

It is hard to believe 10 years have

passed since that memorable fall daythat changed the lives of every citizenin the United States forever.

I remember Sept. 11, 2001 like itwas yesterday as my schedule calledfor me to come into work in theafternoon that day because of a nightmeeting that needed to be covered.

When the phone rang at my housethat morning there wasnt any reasonfor concern from me. The voice onthe other end was my editor, DaveBarber, telling me he needed me tocome in because a plane had hit the

World Trade Center. My televison wasnt on at home,

and at the time I didnt know what

he was talking about. To be quitehonest, I grumbled to myself abouthaving to come to work. Why was aplane crashing into a building in New

York that important? Planes periodi-cally crash and what made this one soimportant?

It was mere minutes after get-ting into work that the significancehit home. What transpired over thecourse of the next 10 hours is some-thing I will never forget.

The generation before me hadPearl Harbor as their unforgettablemoment in time, but for me it willalways be Sept. 11, 2001. For my gen-

eration it was the day that will livein infamy.Unlike some people, I clearly

recall there wasnt a great deal ofemotion that came later. We didnt

know what we were dealing withearly on, or the extent of it.

I think many people forgot whattranspired in those first few hours. Many talk about their instant pentup rage, or being moved to tears. However, the fact of the matter was

we were watching history be createdright before our eyes.

I remember all of us beingfocused on the job at hand which

was searching for local connectionsto what was transpiring in New Yorkand Washington. Our paper made thedecision early on to put out a specialedition, which hadnt been done indecades.

We had heard on television thatmembers of Congress were beingmoved to safe locations. My editorsuggested I call our representativePete Hoekstras office for a comment.

My thoughts were our chances of

contacting anyone were slim to none.Imagine my surprise when the voiceof Hoekstras press secretary, Jamal

Ware, came on the line. His surprised tone and words still

    ring through my ears.

How did you get through?said Ware. All the phone lines arejammed.

The whim proved to be a jour-nalistic coup for the News Advocate.

Ware described what was transpiringincluding how he could see smokefrom his window coming from thePentagon.

I remember he finally said, Hey,I gotta run. We are being evacuated.

Shortly after that time we receivedword from local resident FrankBalcer that his son John had been ata conference in the second tower, buthad been able to evacuate after thefirst plane hit.

It was amazing as in a matter ofhours and being several states away

we were able to get local connectionsto events that were breaking as wetalked. The adrenaline was incrediblein our newsroom.

Time flew by and, with one eyeon our computers and another onthe televison, our entire staff workedlike crazy. Although we knew it wasa big story I dont think the real sig-nificance of it all really hit home untildays and weeks later.

Without a doubt it was and stillis the most exciting day of my jour-nalistic career. However, in the after-

math of seeing the loss of life I prayanother one never happens. That issomething I hope lasts long beyond

    when I...See you next Wednesday.

WALK:From Page 1These days it doesnt bother me at all

to drive across the mighty Mac. Its alwaysa pretty sight to me even at night or ingloomy weather. But on those lucky dayswhen the sky and the lake waters are deepblue theres no prettier place on earth.

Prior to this year, my wife Mary, ourdaughter Stephanie and I did the LaborDay Bridge Walk, sponsored by theMackinac Bridge Authority, two or threetimes. It became more difficult doing it asStephanie approached her teen years, andI remember one reason we decided not tomake it an annual tradition was that thetwo or three times we did it, the weatherwas perfect. We decided to quit while wewere ahead.

Six months ago Mary and I were ableto get camping reservations at Straits StatePark. Its at the north end of the bridge,so you can basically get out of bed, throwon some clothes, and walk about a quartermile to the start of the walk.

For this years walk I got myself out ofbed at 6 a.m. to see Governor Snyder sendoff the 300 runners who had been selected

to participate in the Governors Councilon Physical Fitness Jog at 6:30 a.m. Itwas cool 49 degrees and dark whenGovernor Snyder spoke to the walkers.

Its great to be here, what a wonderfulday, Snyder said. Im all fired up, arentyou?

Also on hand to start the event was theSt. Ignace mayor and Lieutenant GovernorBrian Calley.

Todays a wonderful tradition and Impleased to be a part of it. Brian and I areboth excited to be here because its LaborDay, a day to celebrate all the hard work-ing men and women of Michigan. What agreat talented group.

But its also a day to have fun. This isone of those great events to have fun anddo physical fitness, and thats the mes-sage youre going to hear from us later thismonth, about how we can all be healthier. What a better way to start than on a walklike this, right?

Even though the sun popped out acouple of times during the morning, thetemperature stayed a constant 49 degrees.

There were babies in strollers and gray-haired senior citizens whose grandchildrenwere wheeling them across one more timein wheelchairs. When feet and knees andhips started to ache a bit, seeing one ofthe kids or adults on crutches inchingtheir way along made those tiny pains feel

pretty insignificant. It is estimated that about 60,000 peo-

ple walk across the bridge each Labor Day a tradition started by the Michigan gov-ernor who opened the bridge G. MennenWilliams.

The Mackinac Bridge opened just intime for deer hunting season on Nov. 1,1957. The first bridge walk was held aspart of the dedication ceremony the fol-lowing June and the walks have been heldon Labor Day since 1959.

The first six walks were fromMackinaw City to St. Ignace, but since1965 they have started at the north end ofthe bridge.

For the first couple of hours walk-

ers get both lanes on the east side of thebridge; and after 9:30 southbound trafficgets two lanes and northbound traffic onelane. The bridge authority engages dozensof school buses to carry walkers from thesouth end of the bridge to the north.

Mackinac Bridge Facts:n It cost just under $100 million to

build the bridge. It would cost $400 mil-lion to replace it. The bonds sold to pay for

bridge construction were paid off in 1986.

n The bridge is just less than five mileslong. The towers soar 552 feet above the

water. The water under the center of thebridge is about 250 feet deep. The distanceto the water from the roadway at mid-span

is 200 feet.n Before the bridge was build a fleet

of five car ferries transported 900,000vehicles across the straits each year.

n Five men died while constructing thebridge including 26-year-old steelworkerJames LeSarge of Manistee.n There have been only four fatal traf-

fic accidents resulting in five deaths inthe nearly 54 years the bridge has beenopened.n Painting the bridge is a never-ending

job. It takes nine years and 70,000 gallonsof paint to coat the bridge.n There are about 65 flat tires on the

bridge each year, and approximately 65vehicles run out of gas on the bridge.

n The bridge has been closed about 30times in its history due to zero visibility

with blowing snow. The longest closurewas 8.5 hours.

n In June 1998 the 100 millionth vehi-cle crossed the bridge. About 4.5 million

vehicles cross each year. Over 500,000crossed this past July.n In 1978 a freighter sideswiped the

north tower, causing $40,000 damage tothe bridge and $250,000 damage to thefreighter.

Governor Snyder, with Lieutenant Governor Calley at his left, pose for a photo just before the start of the bridge walk.

Governor Snyder starts a group of runners.
