STRONACH TOWNSHIP Severalmonths ago, Jack Peet, manager of traf-fic safety for AAA Michigan, presented a$15,600 check to Stronach fire chief TimGuenthardt to purchase a modern set ofJaws of Life equipment, and on Mondayhe was back at the Stronach fire hall forthe official demonstration and dedicationof the equipment.

This is something like my 25th dedi-cation, Peet said, noting that AAA hasplaced 60 units around the state since the

    grant program started in 1993.

Peet added that AAA looks to fill inareas that dont have equipment nearby, and they also keep in mind that if an areahas just one set of Jaws, two might beneeded if accidents occur in different loca-tions at the same time.

The new equipment includes cuttersand spreaders, and Guenthardt is pleasedthat the new cutters are capable of cuttingthrough the stronger steel used in todaysautomobiles. He said Maple Grove andNorman township fire departments haveJaws equipment as does the ManisteeCounty Jaws of Life unit. The idea is to be

sure that at least one extraset is available in case therewould be two accidents atthe same time. He addedthat the new equipment

will be available for usethroughout the area.

Peet pointed out thatanother advantage of thenewer equipment is that itis much quieter. Some ofthe older equipment was sonoisy that emergency crewmembers have a difficulttime talking to one another.

Peet retired nine yearsago from a 27-year career

with the Michigan StatePolice, and while with thestate police he came toknow the importance of get-ting the victims extricatedfrom crashed vehicles assoon as possible.

I cant even count thenumber of times I foundmyself holding a victim,

waiting for the crew to cutthem out, Peet said.

The Stronach FireDepartment has had theequipment for about amonth, and it was pressedinto service just a couple of

weeks after it was receivedto remove a driver from acar that had rolled onto itsside just a couple of blocksfrom the fire station.

Several times during thedemonstration, Guenthardtstressed to his departmentmembers the importanceof the golden hour. Thereis a much greater rate ofsurvival if the crash victimarrives at the emergencyroom within an hour of theaccident.

Quick response timeis so critical, Peet said

several months ago, addingthats why, when deciding

who receives the grants, they look for areas thathave a lot of traffic andfor agencies in need of theequipment.

There are signs everywhereOn June 2, the cham-

ber building received aboost in the form of a newsign face, featuring thechamber logo and that hasstarted me thinking aboutsigns of our increasinglybright future in Manistee

County. There are open signswelcoming seasonal resi-dents and visitors to ourcounty. There are signsfor new businesses, likethe Manistee Bookstoreand its my understand-ing that in the next weekor so well see a signreading River StreetStockyard and Spirits atthe corner of Maple andRiver streets. Existingbusinesses, like CareLincand Action Termite andPest Control have movedor expanded and thats asign of their continuingcommitment to ManisteeCounty.

In a very good signof an entirely differentsort, seven businessesin Manistee Countyreceived Small BusinessAdministration loans infiscal 2009, accordingto the MI District OfficeAnnual Report. SBAloans are a great optionfor some businesses thatmight not qualify for tra-

ditional loans for collat-eral or other reasons.

Manistee County is agood place to be if youreconsidering an SBA-guaranteed loan, becauseHuntington Bank, whichhas an office in ManisteeCounty, made more SBAloans in Michigan thanany other lender, witha whopping 184 loansthroughout the state. AndmBank, PNC (formerly

National City), HonorState Bank, NorthwesternBank and West ShoreBank all made SBA loans,a sign that many of us arepursuing the AmericanDream right here.

Finally, this Saturdayat 11 a.m., chamberambassador Gini Peltonand I will be at TreasuredThreads for a grand open-ing celebration. TreasuredThreads is owned by newresident Cyndi Vasilnekand the store is a beauti-ful display of art, antiques

and home dcor. The store is beautiful

and is already attractingcustomers from out oftown even before it offi-cially opens. Surely thatsa sign that the cornerlocation has finally foundthe perfect business fit.

    There are signs every-where.
