    HANDS-ON

    LEARNING

Marty Holtgren, senior inland fisheries biologist for the natural resources departmentof the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians said the students love to touch the fish.

National Science Foundation grantlinks MHS science students with

LRBOI sturgeon programBROWN TOWNSHIP The Little

River Band of Ottawa Indians sturgeonrearing and release program, which hasbeen a model for inter-agency cooperationsince it began eight yearsago, has added a new level ofeducation and cooperation.

From the start, the pro-gram has required a coop-erative effort from the U.S.Forest Service, MichiganDepartment of NaturalResources and Environment, and the Little River Band ofOttawa Indians.

    The newest level of cooperation

involves the Manistee High School scienceprogram as part of a global watershedprogram that is funded by the NationalScience Foundation (NSF).

Marty Holtgren, senior inland fisheriesbiologist for the natural resources depart-ment of the Little River Band of OttawaIndians, started working on his doctorateat Michigan Technological University two

years ago, and there he learned about theNSF-funded program that is a joint effort

between Michigan Tech and several schooldistricts. He worked with Manistee High

School science teachers KateThomson and Kevin Postmato become a part of theprogram along with severalschools in the western UpperPeninsula and Sonora,Mexico.

A primary goal of theNSF program is to helpresearch scientists bettercommunicate with non-sci-

entists. Ph.D. students like Holtgren con-

duct research on local, regional and globalwatershed science projects and work withlocal teachers to develop lesson plans toteach middle and high school students theresearch process and content knowledge. The emphasis is on hands-on, inquiry-

    based research approaches.

Holtgren talks with the students about the sturgeon rearing program. He talked withthe students about his career and how he enjoys making a difference. You canhave the chance to make a difference in the environment, too, he told them. Dontforget that this is your river and your watershed.
