Whether its a person walking past the lighthouse as a low-hanging fog all butmakes the historic structure disappear. Or a brilliant sunset captures or the calmblue waters, the calm blue waters do the same. the lighthouse has been photo-graphed in many memorable ways over the years
An important step in the preservationof the Manistee North Pierhead Light willbe acknowledged on Thursday, June 30when an open-to-the-public transfer cer-emony will be held in conjunction with theManistee National Forest Festival.
Steve Harold, former director of theManistee County Historical Museum, hasbeen rallying for over 13 years for the Cityof Manistee to acquire the lighthouse. InNovember 2009 the city made applicationto the United States Department of the
Interior National Park Service to transferthe decommissioned lighthouse to thecity, and in early 2010 the city receivednotification that the transfer had beenapproved.
A component of the application wasa concession agreement between thecity and the Manistee County HistoricalMuseum. The museum will act as stewardsfor the lighthouse and be in charge of itsrestoration. Harold is now semi-retiredfrom the museum, but continues to servesas curator and as such is in charge of thelighthouse restoration project, utilizing his
vast knowledge of historic preservation.Restoration plans include removing
hazardous materials, repainting the exte-rior and interior of the lighthouse and
making necessary repairs to the interiorof the lighthouse. After the renovation iscomplete, the lighthouse will then becomea museum and be open for public tours.Long range plans call for a virtual tour onthe Internet of the facility that will allowpeople of all abilities to enjoy the light-house.
Anyone interested in helping withthe restoration should call the ManisteeCounty Historical Museum at (231) 723-5531. Donations can be sent to ManisteeCounty Historical Museum, 425 River St.,Manistee, MI 49660.

STORY IDEA?If you have a story idea,

Barber, at (231) 398-3113 or e-mail
him at [email protected].
Every breath you take, everymove you make, every bond youbreak, every step you take Ill be
watching you.Song Every Breath You Take
by the rock group Police
When George Orwell pennedhis famous novel 1984so many years ago, one of
the things he included in it was thefamous part about big brother is
watching you.For years, generations of stu-
dents in school read those words andchuckled, saying it could never hap-pen. The truth of the matter is big
brother is closer than you think.I read something the other day
that listed how many security cam-eras were located just in the streets ofNew York City. It was an astronomi-
cal number, and if you wanted to youcould virtually watch as someonemoved about the city.
Sounds like big brother to me.The amazing thing is some people
can virtually be on camera from thetime they leave their home until theyreturn. That is a scary proposition,
but in todays crazy world it is oftennecessary to have the cameras inplace. Many criminals and terroristshave been spotted in that manner.
With cameras in buildings, andpointed out to the front of their build-ings, you can be viewed just abouteverywhere. Stop at the ATM andtheyve got you on camera, grab a cupof coffee and make sure you smile,
because I am sure there is one in thecoffee shop or restaurant as well.
Think you can avoid it if you ridepublic transportation? Well forget it,
because most trains and buses havecameras today. Even if a police carpulls up behind you, then you know
your you are being filmed by theircameras.
Most work places have camerasas well. So if you are out and about inthe next day or two and have an itchin a not too flattering place dontscratch it unless you want to share
that image with dozens of others. Those of you who are old enough
to remember Allan Funt of the televi-sion show Candid Camera have toagree that he has to be dancing upin heaven with all these hidden cam-eras. For those who arent old enoughto know him, he had a televisionshow where he secretly filmed people.
The government has had thecapability with spy satellites to watch
the entire world. It really seems likethe days of just disappearing some-
where in the country are all but overbecause you will turn up on a camerasomewhere.
What started me thinking aboutall of this is I ordered something froma mail order catalog and was able to
watch it be shipped step by step allthe way from Maine to Manistee onthe Internet. Thanks to the famousUPC sticker they kept scanning at
various locations, they were able tosend me e-mail updates to tell me theexact location of my package.
That package saw more parts ofthe country than I have in the past
year. What cracked me up was see-ing it listed at a tracking stationin Connecticut, a regional stationin Maume, Ohio, and every otherstop. Im amazed it didnt say driverstopped for lunch at McDonalds inGrand Rapids.
I half expected the last message tosay look out your front door, stupid, its on the porch, but all it said was ithas been delivered to your house.
It has pretty much reached thepoint where you can track just aboutanything or anyone with a UPCsymbol and a scanner. It makes me
wonder if pretty soon, when babiesare born, the doctor will slap them onthe backside only instead of startingthem breathing he will be installing aUPC symbol.
I do know they have places rightnow that require cars to have a UPCsticker so they can get scanned tomake sure they are able to park incertain parking areas, but Im surethey could be used to track people
just as easy.It is either that or we will all
become like basset hounds and havea computer chip shot under our skin.It really makes you realize how easybig brother can watch us.
There was talk a while back howif everyone did have a chip of thatnature that it could include thingslike their medical history on it. In mycase, they would probably put one in
me like the shock dog collars and giveme a little zap every now and then. The military technology being
what it is today, they can even watchus from tiny drone planes so smalland far up that you cant even see orhear them. So Uncle Sam can tune usin any time he wants, and we donteven know it.
Something I find interesting is thebig push in the last few years withthe HIPAA laws. You have to remain
behind a dotted line at a pharmacyaway from the person in front of you,or in a private booth, when check-ing in at a hospital so your privacy isprotected.
But ... what about my privacy tobe filmed on a camera. I am sure allof those places are filming me andeveryone else without a worry in the
world about our privacy.Kind of makes you think where
privacy begins and stops anymore inthis country. Right now, a 5-year-oldhas probably been filmed more thanJohn Wayne was in his entire life onthe big screen.

MANISTEE West ShoreCommunity College and theManistee Civic Players are team-ing up once again and will bringarea audiences the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Oklahoma!
The show will be performed atthe historic Ramsdell Theater onJune 24, 25 and July 1, 2 at 7:30
p.m. and on June 26 and July 3at 2 p.m.This exceptional musical is
hands-down the most Americanof all musicals, said RickPlummer, director of the showand WSCC professor of theaterand director of cultural arts. Itcaptures our national characterperfectly our rugged individu-alism, which we all prize, and ourlove of community.
Oklahoma! was the first
musical written by Rodgers &Hammerstein. Composer RichardRodgers had wanted to adapta rural folk drama of the 1930s Green Grow the Lilacs tothe musical stage and lyricistOscar Hammerstein II was askedto collaborate. They decided thatthis collaboration would be dif-
ferent from standard Broadwaymusicals. Hammerstein wouldfirst write the lyrics and Rodgers
would set them to music. Bothwere determined to put the nar-rative of the story and characterdevelopment before typical musi-cal comedy convention. Aided
by the brilliant choreography ofAgnes de Mille, their simple taleof cowhands and farmers find-ing love and community in theOklahoma territory caught the
imagination and patriotic passionof wartime America.
The love story challenges thetypical romance with the indepen-dent Laurey refusing to acknowl-edge her feelings for Curly and
Ado Annie unable to say noeven though she knows its wrong. The villain is Jud Fry, the brood-
ing outsider who lives in AuntEllers smokehouse and pines forthe beautiful Laurey, whos reallyin love with the handsome Curly. The soot-smeared brute is thetortured center of this unrequitedlove story, which flickers fromlight comedy to fierce tragedy. The contrasting themes raised thedramatic bar for musical theater.
Oklahoma! was thefirst phenomenon in modernBroadway history. No show had
run over 500 performances untilOklahoma! ran for 2,212.
Plummer said the songs arewonderful and addictively hum-mable. People Will Say Werein Love was a number-one hitsong in 1943 and Oh, What aBeautiful Mornin and TheSurrey with the Fringe on Top
also topped the charts.A 1953 article in the NewYork Times reported that theshow not only holds the recordfor the longest run of a musicalon B It ran on Broadway for five
years and two months, grossing$7,000,000.
Past WSCC and MCP produc-tions have included last fallsCabaret, last summers AnnieGet Your Gun, Neil Simonscomedy Barefoot in the Park
and The Sound of Music. MCPand WSCC will also collaborate ithe fall for the musical, SweeneyTodd: the Demon Barber of FleetStreet.
Reservations for Oklahoma!can be made by calling the WSCC
box office at (231) 843-5507 orstopping by the office located
in the Arts and Sciences Centerbetween 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.Monday through Friday.

BYKEN GRABOWSKI
ASSOCIATE EDITOR
Over the course ofthe last several years theManistee Art Institutehas put on some interest-ing programs that reallychallenged local art loversto expand their horizons
when it came to the worldof art.
Later this month begin-ning on June 24 the artinstitute will be doing itagain when they host theManistee MetropolitanMuseum of Art Show. Thisunique show will not fea-ture the artwork of localartists, but rather the art-
work that is owned by localresidents.
To me it is going tobe an extremely excit-ing event, said Manistee
Art Institute board chairKerry Schubach. We have
asked the people fromthe greater community tocontribute the use of theirprivate collection. There issome amazing and fine artthat is owned by people inManistee.
So what people mightsee adorning the walls ofthe T. Walter Hardy Hallof the Ramsdell Theatreduring this exhibit is aRembrandt or Degas. However the art instituteis asking that they all beoriginal works and notreproductions. Schubach
said they will keep it veryprivate in terms of whosepieces they are for securityreasons.
We will not let peopleknow where the artworkcame from during theexhibit because we knowthere are some valuablepieces, said Schubach. No names of the owners
will be published and weare trying to do somethinghere that represents a big-
time exhibit.However, Schubach
said they really dont knowat this time the full scopeof artwork they will bereceiving. She said a goodexample is that someonecontacted her about show-ing a watercolor that wascreated by jazz musicianMiles Davis.
I know he isnt a
famous artist, but justthe fact that Miles Davisdid a watercolor makesit an exciting piece, saidSchubach.
She said another piecethat will end up in theshow is a wood cutting that
was purchased for a verysmall amount of money ata yard sale. However, whenthe owner did research onthe artist it was discov-ered that she had exhib-ited her work all over the
world, including at the
Smithsonian.I thought that wasworthy of putting in theshow, said Schubach. What we are asking is foreveryone who lets us showthe artwork they own togive us some details aboutit, and the artist. When
you look at that little storybehind it is when it comesto life. It just isnt the aes-thetic part or the artwork,
but the human part of it aswell.
Another unique piecethat they plan to showis a rather large impres-sion that came from KingTuts Tomb that weighs300 pounds. The impres-sion was then painted withauthentic colors.
The artist was givenpermission to go into KingTuts Tomb and do impres-sions, said Schubach. He
then turned around andmade artwork out of them.
We went and met the own-ers to view them, and noware working out the way toget it here.
Schubach said thateach collector will havethe opportunity to exhibitthree pieces of artwork. They are asking for all artand no photography to bein the exhibit. Anyone thathas any questions shouldcontact the art institute at
(231) 723-2682, or at [email protected].
Works may be deliveredon June 17 from 1 p.m.until 7 p.m., and June 18from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. toHardy Hall in the RamsdellTheatre complex at thecorner of Maple and FirstStreets.
Show dates are June 24(4 to 8:30 p.m.), 25 (1 to
8:30 p.m.), 26 (1 to 5 p.m.),July 1 (1 to 8:30 p.m.), 2(1 to 8:30 p.m.), 3 (1 to 5p.m.), and 4 (1 to 5 p.m.)
We are not going tohave the traditional open-ing night reception, as
we will have an art loversreception on July 1, saidSchubach. My thinking is
we want to give Manisteesomething bigger than lifeto get excited about, andnot just open the doors to a
bunch of art.
