If a movie were being made about thelife of Toni Trucks, the first scene shotmight be her on the red carpet of the pre-miere of Breaking Dawn.

Or perhaps it would be her shooting ascene with Annette Bening and AntonioBanderas on the set of He Loves Me.

Thats how it often works in film andtelevision, Trucks points out.

When you think about your favoritemovie, she said, and then you think about the ending scene where they finally kiss and they fell in love and it was thebest thing ever and then you say, youknow what, they did that scene the first

day that they ever filmed and they hadnever met each other.Thats good acting, where you have to

fall in love with somebody, or you have togo to their funeral before you ever fall inlove with them. Thats really doing yourhomework.

So in this film, the actress playingTrucks might have first asked to portray someone who has just completed twomajor motion pictures. But a lot of hardwork brought both of them to that point.

A LITTLE EXPOSITIONFrom a young age, Trucks began

embracing every opportunity Manisteehad to offer. And the community embraced her as

well. What Im doing sounds very glamor-

us when youre far away from it, but Ian honestly say that I feel 100 percenthat I am a product of Manistee, Trucksaid. And I say that because the people,he community of Manistee were alwayselling me yes. They were always sayingyes, you can do this. Yes, we believe inou, we support you.

So Trucks took advantage of every

chance to do what she loved.I exhausted my opportunities in

Manistee, she said. I did every danceclass, I did every play at the Ramsdell,

I choreographed and helped out at thehigh school and starred in the plays there.I was always just trying to find a way to be more until I couldnt do anymore. And then the community said, OK, go toInterlochen, and I got a scholarship andthe community helped me do that.

So I really think that Manistee is lov-ing and there are people and institutionsin Manistee that are telling young peopleyes, you can do it. And you have to look for those people and those avenues.

Manistee native Toni Trucks arrives atthe premiere of Summit EntertainmentsThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1 at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live onNov. 14, in Los Angeles.

2 WEST SHORE SHOPPERS GUIDE Sunday, December 18, 2011

Trucks finished highschool at Interlochen ArtsAcademy and then choseto go to the University of Michigan after auditioningfor about a dozen programsacross the country.

They only accepted10 girls and 10 boys eachyear, Trucks said of theprestigious musical theaterprogram. I was thrilledto get in and were a

Michigan family. My dad isan alum and so it was kindof perfect.

She also spent a year inLondon studying theaterand upon graduation in2003, moved to New York City to pursue her careerand had an agent within aweek.

Trucks credits thisstroke of fortune to thepreparation she received atU of M and luck.

I was very lucky, shesaid. I try to do my bestto encourage young artiststo go to school and justbecause youre so prepared.... Michigans musical the-ater department prepared

us so wonderfully for the business aspect of it.

    HER FAVORITE

    MOMENTTrucks spent the next

two and a half years doingregional theater and com-mitting herself to the goalof doing one new thing a year. It could be anything work in a new theater, try a different type of role.

When I auditioned forBarbershop, I thoughtthat was my one new thing, she said. I was like,oh I did a television audi-tion, isnt that neat? Andthen all of a sudden I did ascreen test and I was like,OK thats two new things.

Then all the sudden I booked a television show and my mind was blown because I was doing the-ater, I was doing regionaltheater I wasnt evendoing Broadway ... andall the sudden it was like, heres a television show on Showtime, you are thefemale lead, theres nopilot, you are definitely doing 10 episodes, youhave to move to L.A. and your life is different now forever.

This, she said, ranks asher favorite moment in acareer that has featured alot of great moments.

Ive had so many phone calls to my mom and

dad where weve just been jumping up and down and

screaming, Trucks said.I have so many memorieslike that. I think probably booking my first televi-sion show was a really bigmilestone for me becauseI wanted to do film andtelevision, but I didnt haveany timeline for that.

That phone call to hermom, she said, is a particu-larly great memory.

    We just screamed,

we jumped up and down.I dont think I could takethe smile off my face,Trucks said. I just knew that things would be dif-ferent. I knew it wouldnt be easy, I still had so many ups and downs. I was like, will I ever work again? Ihave that moment rightnow, Im like will I ever work again, or is this it? And you just keep going onfaith.

But that was a really special moment. We were just all so excited.

    LIFE OF A

    WORKING

    ACTORThe results of an actors

work are on view for every-one, however the life of a working actor is not oftenabout red carpet appear-ances and seeing your faceon the big or small screens.

You must be able toaccept perpetual uncer-tainty and I think thatsthe thing that ultimately

separates people who doit for a long time, Truckssaid. Its not good or bad,its just, do I want to benervous about being able topay this or that bill or do I want to know where I wantto be in a month? BecauseI am sitting here not know-ing where Im going to bein a month, and thats OK with me.

I could be here, I could

be in Bulgaria, I could beanywhere. And you justhave to be able to changeon the drop of a dime, andfor lots of people, thats toounsettling. ... If youre the biggest star in the world, jobs end, TV shows end, movies end, if you do aplay, it has a run. It ends.

As a working actor,Trucks said shes foreverreturning to square one.

So Ive just finishedtwo major motion picturesand Im back to squareone, she said. Im audi-tioning again. Thats my reality, and thats OK.

The work itself is oftenless glamorous than theend result, especially infilm and television. Truckssaid she thinks those whohave never seen a movie being made or a TV show being taped would find the whole process interesting.

Theyd be surprised athow much sitting around you have, just because ittakes a lot of time to setup shots, it takes a lot of time to do the lighting, she said. I think everyonein their lifetime should go watch a taping of anything... just to see how it is.

RECENT WORKTrucks was at an out-

door plaza in Los Angeles when she got the callthat shed landed a rolein the fourth part of theTwilight movies.

I was jumping up anddown and I was so excit-ed, she said of learning

shed been cast as Mary inBreaking Dawn. I madea complete fool of myself,Im sure.

The hardest part camein the next month, whenshe was sworn to secrecy at risk of losing her new job. But finally, the day came when the cast wasannounced to the press andTrucks began the adjust-ment of being a part of theTwilight phenomenon.

The whole franchise of Twilight is so enormousand its definitely been anadjustment getting used toall the attention, she said. Its just so big, its really hard to fathom when yousee it. Actually being on

the carpet and seeing allthe screaming people whohave been sleeping outsideof the theater for a week thousands of people sleep-ing outside, they called ittent city just to catch aglimpse of the red carpet was just insane.

She also just completeda movie called He LovesMe, which was written by Zoe Kazan (granddaughterof Academy Award winnerElia Kazan) and stars PaulDano, Antonio Banderas,Deborah Ann Woll and

Annette Bening. And now, in this lifeof perpetual uncertaintly, shes back to square oneand looking for her nextrole.

Besides being her job,Trucks speaks passionately about the importance of film and television.

I think that film andtelevision and YouTubeand all these avenues we have but film inparticular levels theplaying field for people,Trucks said. We all start

out, were all seeing thesame story and we takeadventures together andas audience members, weare always trying to under-

stand otherwise you wouldnt enjoy going to themovies. Youre always try-ing to understand someoneelses perspective. ...

Thats the same thing with Twilight. All these young girls are puttingthemselves in Bellas shoesand theyre experiencingthis adventure and I think we just learn and becomeso much more tolerant of people when we are tryingto see things from otherpeoples perspective.

    This belief, and her

fond memories and love of her hometown, have madeTrucks a passionate advo-cate for the Vogue Theatrerevitalization project.

I saw my first mov-ies at the Vogue Theatre, she said. So now that tiny little girl thats seen moviesat the Vogue is dreamingof performing and beingin the movies that I am, Ireally want to bring thatfull circle if I can and doeverything I can to help the Vogue because they helpedme.

Between the Ramsdelland the Vogue and all the wonderful acting and danceteachers in the community, all of these entities really have lifted me up and Ithink the options are limit-less for what the new facil-ity can do.

Its an avenue forunderstanding, she said.Movies are so healing, theyre powerful. I think thats why people get pas-sionate.

By making simple switchesand smart product investments, new parents can save thousandsof dollars in the first year, whilestill providing what is best forbaby.

Parents can get high-quality,safe products for their infant andspend less, says Sandra Gordon, national baby products expertand author of Consumer ReportsBest Baby Products, 10th edi-tion. Here are her tips:

    SAVEn Infant nutrition go with

the store brand. While breastmilk is best and the most eco-nomical choice, for moms whochoose to formula feed or wantto supplement breast milk withformula, store brand infantformula is nutritionally compa-rable to national brands. As amom and pediatrician, I recom-mend to moms who choose toformula feed to check out store

brand infant formula, said Dr.Jennifer Trachtenberg, M.D., aNew York City pediatrician andauthor of The Smart ParentsGuide to Getting Your KidsThrough Checkups, Illnesses and Accidents. All infant formulasold in the United States, nation-al and store brands, must meetthe same nutrient requirementsof the U.S. Food and Drug Administration so they are nutri-tionally equivalent. Visit www.storebrandformula.com for moreinformation and nutritional com-parisons.

n Dont buy a crib set. It may seem nice to have a beautiful, coordinated crib set, but certainaccessories can make your babyscrib unsafe. Basically, bare is best. A tight-fitting crib sheet isall your baby needs. For warmth, dress your baby in a sleep sack instead of using a crib blanket.

n Skip the designer duds.Babies grow fast, so they wontget to wear expensive clothes forlong. Watch for sales and scoutfor designer wear at secondhandshops. They can also be great

    places for holiday outfits.

SPLURGEn Buy a new car seat. If you

get a used car seat at a garagesale, you wont know the age of the car seat or if its been in anaccident, which can compromise

its integrity; car seats have anexpiration date, typically six years. Car seat components candegrade over time. Also, theinstruction manual may be miss-ing, and installing the seat cor-rectly is extremely important for your childs safety.

n Buy a safe, reliable crib.Crib safety standards are updatedfrequently. A new crib can help you be sure youre getting the saf-est one for your baby. Its money well spent, especially consideringthat babies spend up to 18 hoursa day sleeping.

n Buy a quality stroller.Consider how and where youlluse the stroller most often todetermine what kind to get andavoid buying multiple strollers. You can probably get a quality

set of wheels starting at around$150.

Just because it isntsummer doesnt mean youshould put away those sun-glasses.

Most people think sunglasses are just for the bright summer sun, butdamaging ultraviolet (UV)rays are present year-round, says Dr. JennaLewis, an optometrist with VSP Vision Care, the largestnot-for-profit vision ben-efits company in the UnitedStates. In fact, the sunsits lower in the sky dur-ing winter, providing moreexposure.

While Americans arepretty good about wearingsunglasses in summer, mosttend to ignore the sunsharmful effects in the wintermonths. But UV rays aredangerous all year. Snow is reflective, and up to 85percent of the suns UV raysare reflected back up intothe eyes.

Those UV rays damageeyes the same way they damage skin, and can causecataracts, macular degener-

ation and cancerous growths both inside and around the

eyes, all of which can cause blindness.

However, much of thedamage the sun causescan be prevented simply by wearing sunglasses that block 100 percent of UV rays.

    Start YoungUV damage is cumulative

over time and doesnt heal,so start protecting youreyes from the sun now.

That includes making surechildren are outfitted withsunglasses and protecting

eyes of all ages from the sunall year. Most UV damage occurs

before age 18, but less than30 percent of children wearsunglasses.

In the winter, parentsarent slathering their kids with sunscreen, and areinstead bundling them up with coats and scarves, says Dr. Lewis. So sun-glasses arent intuitively topof mind, but they should be.

    Check TheLabel

Make sure your sun-glasses are 99-100 percentUV-rated. Tinted sunglasses wont provide UV protec-tion unless they have a UV rating on the label. Wearingtinted glasses that are notactually protective allow the

pupils to dilate, which letsmore radiation in the eyes

than wearing no sunglassesat all. Also, the more cover-

age the frame provides, themore protection you willreceive. You may also wantto get polarized lenses, which cut down on glare, if you live in a snowy area or by water.

When the sun is shin-ing on the snow, its almostimpossible to see, let alonedrive without sunglasses, cautions Dr. Lewis. Andthats a real safety hazard.

    Be Functionalin Style

Different color lenses work better for differentconditions. For example, yellow lenses are great forskiing since they filter out blue light that can makefocusing difficult. Greenlenses are great for generaloutdoor use, and brown/amber lenses enhance deptperception, making themgood for driving and sports. You can learn more at www. vsp.com. Or see your localeye doctor, who can help you find the right shades fo your needs -- particularly if you prefer the convenienceof prescription lenses.

Just remember as youre bundling up this winter tomake sure your eyes dontgo naked!

Protect your eyesfrom the winter sun

With a little finesse,ou can find out how youroney feels, and still makehe question a completeurprise when the timeomes. Watch a movie

hat involves a marriageroposal or mention thengagements of friends andcquaintances to gauge aeaction. This light detec-ive work should give youll the information youeed.

    Celebrate theSeason

Take advantage of thetinsel and lights of theseason, which providethe perfect backdrop for

romance. Consider hangingthe engagement ring fromthe tree instead of a star orangel, or slide the ring intoher stocking.

Or, if you like the ideaof spectacle, deliver the ringdressed up like Santa, orhave carolers incorporatethe proposal into a tune.

You may want to waituntil youre not surroundedby extended family to popthe question. New YearsEve is a great time to dothis because your kiss andtoast at midnight will havetwo meanings.

    Next StepsGetting engaged is the

first step in a long weddingplanning process. Next youwill need to share the goodnews with your loved ones.

Youll want to announceyour engagement and wed-ding date right away toensure everyone can makeit to your celebration, butdont sacrifice creativity.Save the dates cards from

an online stationery storewith customization options, such as Minted.com, makethe process easier.

Your wedding is yourspecial day, so look forcards that express your per-sonality, advises MariamNaficy, CEO of Minted.com. An online store alsois a great option for wed-ding invitations, becausethe color and style optionsare vast and easily search-able. To explore save thedate and wedding invitationideas, visit www.minted.com.

However you decideto propose, dont forget tomake the moment special, because its one youll neverforget.
