    English, economics, pre-calculus manners?

The senior class of Onekama HighSchool had an interesting course line-up this quarter. In addition to theirtraditional classes, the seniors partici-pated in a four-session etiquette classdesigned to help them better navigatethe world outside their classroom.

The course, taught by formerOnekama teacher, principal, andsuperintendent Beth McCarthy, cov-ered topics including first impressions, gracious guest practices, importantcommunication techniques, social

awareness and appropriate manners indaily living. The purpose of the presentation

was to reinforce the lessons that thestudents have been taught by theirparents and teachers, explainedMcCarthy. Our focus was life afterschool. Sometimes life experiences can

be overwhelming. My goal was to givethe seniors the skills necessary to besocially confident and ultimately to beprepared for success.

The classes culminated in a unique

practicum: a fine dining experienceat the restaurant at Arcadia Bluffs.Students were treated to a complimen-tary breakfast at Arcadia Bluffs, thanksto Bill Shriver, chief operating officer;Scott VerStrat, director of food and

beverage; and Ashley Sholl, director oflodge operations.

The students took away more fromthe experience than full stomachs.I really enjoyed learning how to dothings that are considered to be cour-teous, and some of them I had no ideathey would even be considered cour-teous, commented Onekama senior

Ashley DoRooy. The brunch was greatbecause we learned how to have goodmanners while eating, and we got thechance to eat good food at the sametime.

Added Senior Taylor Hagen: Itwas kind of Mrs. McCarthy to take thetime and share these lessons with us.Im certain that the tips she shared

with us will help us with college, jobinterviews, relationships, and even inthe way we present ourselves to the

    world.

    Come Celebrate the Advent Season

and the Birth of Our Savior Jesus Christ

    The

    Catholic

    Community

    of Manistee invites

    you and your family to

    celebrate with us this Blessed

    Christmas Season. Do you know

that God has chosen you for this time

and in this community? He has need of

you, and so do we, to help spread the Gospel

message of His Son, Jesus Christ. The Catholic

Community of Manistee is a community of believers

striving for a more spiritual and prayerful relationship

with God. Over the years some of our brothers and sisters in

the Manistee area have moved, drifted, or walked away from

regular Sunday worship with us and have left the Catholic Church.

This fact saddens us and we miss your presence with us. This Advent

and Christmas Season we invite you to come home! Come home andonce again celebrate the Catholic beliefs of your youth and join with

us in the participation of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It is our fervent

prayer that you will want to share this experience of Gods love for all of us.

Come and worship with us and re-discover Gods love, truth and grace

    as witnessed and

    practiced in the

    Catholic Church.
