Dear Westbrook Families, Cold weather is here to stay! That means it’s already time to get all the winter gears and our students ready for the winter routines! It would be helpful if parents can find time at home to help your children practice more independence in getting their winter gear on and off quickly by themselves. For our young children, this process can take a long time. Please also label boots, jackets, mittens and hats if possible. With so many similar items, it’s really difficult to keep track without names. Outdoor Recess Procedures The benefits of an outdoor recess are many and Westbrook School makes every effort to see that all of our students go outdoors every day. Children are able to exercise, socialize and experience a variety of activities with friends and this all helps to enhance their learning experience. Starting the afternoon after a time of fresh air definitely improves learning, alertness and overall productivity. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play. The wind chill factor must be ten or below or it must be too wet or raining before we cancel outdoor recess. The children are out approximately 20 minutes. Please note that children must wear coats if temperatures are below 32°F. We are often presented with requests for children to remain indoors at recess, generally because of allergies or as part of a recovery from illness. If it is necessary for your child to be indoors at recess, a note from the doctor will be required. We appreciate your support and cooperation with our recess procedure. Report Cards Your child’s report card will be coming home in a few weeks. They will be sent home on Tuesday, December 5th. Use this opportunity to celebrate your child’s growth and development as learners, as well as the effort and behaviors that contribute to success in school. When you sit down with your child to reflect on their growth this trimester, remember that it is one snapshot of their learning journey. The “grades” are just one way to gauge your child’s work at this point in the year, with the recent conference with the teacher providing you a much more detailed picture of your child as a learner. When parents take time to have a conversation and reflect with your child about various parts of the report and their growth as learners, children feel your support of their learning. Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership, and enjoy your weekend with your wonderful children! Jeannie Sung Westbrook Principal

Dear WB/GG Families – Did you know WB/GG PTA funds 4 to 5 school-wide assemblies each year? These amazing assemblies enrich the curriculum and allow our kids an opportunity to learn about other cultures and also learn from role models in our community. Glen Grove assemblies are 45 to 50 minutes & Westbrook assemblies are 30-35 minutes. These are for student only and are held during school times. Be sure to ask your children what they thought about the performances as we go through the 2017 - 2018 school year lineup!!! "The Spirit of Harriet Tubman" - written and performed by Leslie McCurdy On a barren stage with only a trunk of costumes, Leslie thrills the young audiences with her passionate, entertaining, and highly engaging portrayal of the Harriet Tubman. She embodies the "spirit" of Tubman from her early childhood to her elder years. Leslie literally will bring history to life on stage!!! November 10th at 8:00 am, Glen Grove WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS: An original musical by American Eagle Productions will tell the “The Giving Tree” story through different characters from Shel Silverstein’s collection of poems. Children will meet a boy who turns into a TV set and a girl that eats a whale. The Unicorn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sara Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out!!! It is a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off and crocodiles go to the dentist. Ooh, what fun our kids will have!!! December 12th at 10:00 am & 1:15 pm, Westbrook Elementary Larry Yazzie, The Native Pride Dancer Larry will teach our students about the beauty, symbolism, and skill of Native American music, dance, and regalia. The performance will include stories, musical styles, and insight into the vibrant history and culture of Native American life. January 25th - 8:00 am show at GG 10:00 am & 1:15 pm shows at WB Game of Warriors: Brazilian Capoeira – presented by Urban Gateways This exciting live performance will introduce our children to Brazilian cultural history and meaning behind Capoeira, a Brazilian cultural art form that beautifully combines dance and music with the acrobatic skills of martial arts. February 27th- 8:00 am show at GG 10:00 am & 1:15 pm shows at WB Chicago Boyz Acrobatic Team A young, all boys, team of inner city kids who made it all the way to America’s Got Talent Season 8 semifinals! Team will be flipping, flopping and tumbling to send home the message of individuality, perseverance and inclusiveness with our kids. Hope their attitude and positive vibes make an impact on our kids to work hard and achieve their dreams! Jun 1st – 8:00 am show at GG And 10:00 am and 1:15 shows at WB Tanya Klatt and I are so excited to have found these amazing assemblies that I am certain our children will enjoy and learn from. A special thanks to both the principals and the Fine Arts teachers (Eileen Berichon & Karin Meister) for their support in helping PTA bring these fun and educational assemblies to our school. Thank You, Vibha Gupta & Tanya Klatt, Cultural Arts Chairs

How to be your best at school and home

Ever had one of those days when you feeling a bit tired? Or don’t have all the energy you wish you had prior to a test or school project? Chances are, what you did or didn’t do at home may be having an effect on how you feel. If you want to always feel your best, be sure to follow a healthy routine and lifestyle. A good example to live by is 9-5-2-1-0. This simple acronym can help you to always feel your best.

· 9 stands for the number of hours of sleep you should receive each night. To feel fully recharged, you need a good night’s sleep. To help achieve this goal, maintain a regular bedtime and wake up time. This will help your body to get on a regular sleep cycle. It also helps to avoid caffeinated beverages and keep bedrooms free of electronics.

· Fill half of your plate (.5) at each meal with fruits and vegetables. This will help you to maintain your daily advised intake of different vitamins, minerals, and fiber. A healthy diet is important for overall health and a feeling of wellbeing.

· The number 2 tells you the maximum number of hours in each day that should be spent in front of a screen. This includes computers, TV’s, tablets, and other electronic devices. In general, when partaking in these activities, your body is sedentary. Limiting screen time to 2 hours will help to ensure that the day is also filled with other activities.

· At least 1 hour of every day should be used to have physical and active play. This can be a game with friends, hiking with family, or playing with pets. Exercise has many health benefits including heart and lung health and maintaining an ideal weight.

· When consuming beverages, try to make water and low fat/fat free milk number one choices. It’s best to drink 0 sugary beverages. Drinks which are high in sugar tend to have no nutritional benefit and are high in calories. Interested in learning more about the 9-5-2-1-0 program and ways you can start the day right and stay
