Western Canada Summer Games

HistoryEstablished in 1975 and occurring every four years, the Western Canada Summer Games is a multi-sport event that brings the top amateur athletes together from the three western provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the three northern territories, Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut.

The Games serve to develop the athletes’ skills in a competitive but friendly environment while preparing them for future Canada Games and multi-sport games at the national and international level. Outside the Canada Games, the Western Canada Summer Games assembles the largest contingent of future Olympic hopefuls in a multi-sport setting in our country.

MedalsAt the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games, specially-designed Games medals will be presented to each athlete having competed and achieved a first, second and third place standing in their event or team competition.

Games TrophyThe Western Canada Summer Games Trophy is awarded to the province or territory that accumulates the most points over the ten days of the Games.

Some facts about Team Alberta, and the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games:• Alberta, comprised of 20 teams, will compete in all 16 sports• Team Alberta will have 425 participants with 341 athletes, 67 coaches and

managers and 17 mission staff in Swift Current• Team Alberta features 164 female athletes and 177 male athletes• 26 Team Alberta coaches are male and 17 coaches are female• Team Alberta participants represent 56 communities across the province• Team Alberta’s youngest athlete is 11 year old Diver Luisa Arco from

Edmonton• Team Alberta’s oldest athlete is 26 year old Meghan Sander from Edmonton

in the sport of Athletics (Special Olympics)

Colours and LogoTeam Alberta’s colours are blue, white and grey. The blue represents the vast prairie skies. The lightning bolt shows the power and electricity that Team Alberta athletes will possess in Swift Current. The bolt is located in the southwest corner of the logo to indicate the location of the rugged Rocky Mountains in the province. Also, the lightning creates the shape of an evergreen tree in the middleof the “A”, symbolizing Alberta’s many forests.

Swift Current, Saskatchewan will host the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games August 9-18, 2019.

The 2019 Western Canada Summer Games continues the western Canadian tradition as a multi-sport event to provide development opportunities for amateur athletes and to help them advance their skills in a competitive, but friendly environment.

The 2019 Western Canada Summer Games is the largest event to be held in the region hosting over 1700 athletes, coaches, officials and mission staff. The Games will feature 16 sports at more than 20 venues as well as a cultural festival.

MissionStaffA group of sport volunteers and professionals will serve as mission staff for Team Alberta at the Games. They are responsible for leadership of Team Alberta and for the coordination of a number of organizational tasks prior to the Games, such as transportation, uniforms and accommodations, as well as ongoing communications with teams and the Host Society.

During the Games, each Team Alberta sport contingent will have a mission staff liaison assigned to help make their participation in the Games run smoothly.
