Saint Catharine of SienaSchool sits atop a hill adjacent toSaint Catharine of Siena Churchon the corner of Wunder Avenueand Fischer Place in Westwood.

Saint Catharine of SienaSchool has been serving the com-munity of Westwood for morethan one hundred years thanksto the dedication and commit-ment of this parish to providinga Catholic education for the chil-dren of the parish.

Saint Catharine serves stu-dents from kindergarten througheighth grade. The school sup-ports a philosophy of educatingthe whole child with the Catholicreligion at its center and founda-tion. Students not only receivereligious instruction daily in reli-gion class, they also attend week-ly Mass each Friday morning.

The educational environmentchallenges and encourages chil-dren and parents to participate inthe formation of a positive andmoral learning environment. Theschool is accredited by the OhioCatholic Schools Association. Thecurriculum is aligned with theGraded Courses of Study for theArchdiocese of Cincinnati.

One of the mantras of theschool is – Experience theWarmth Our Small School Offers– Saint Catharine sees its smallsize as an advantage for studentswho receive more personalizedattention from teachers. Eventhough they are small, with oneclass at each grade level, theyremain committed to the educa-

tion of the whole child. This commitment is evidenced

in the school curriculum whichoffers music and physical educa-tion instruction as well as weeklySpanish classes. Individual musiclessons are also available for stu-dents.

Art instruction is taught beclassroom teachers from kinder-garten through fifth grade.Students in 6,7 and 8 receive artinstruction from an art specialist. They have hosted Art Weeks thispast school year where an artteacher visits for a week to workon special projects with studentsin grades K-5. Saint Catharinehas an excellent school librarywhere students go each week toread and research. The schoolalso has a science lab and a com-puter lab that is staffed with afull-time technology coordinator.

Saint Catharine utilizesadvanced interactive technology

in all aspects of the school day. Their Power School program

enhances parent-school commu-nication by posting grades, home-work, tracking assignments, progress reports and attendanceonline. Each classroom has sever-al computers with Internet access.

Their computer lab containsenough computers to host anentire class for project andresearch-based work. The majori-ty of our classrooms haveSMART Boards. They have prior-itized technology training for ourteaching staff over the past year.Teachers have attended severalworkshops to improve the use oftechnology in classroom instruc-tion.

Two other things that theschool offers are a hot lunch pro-gram and a Latchkey program. The lunchroom staff prepares hotmeals for students each day. TheLatchkey program is an after-

school childcare program.Children are supervised immedi-ately upon dismissal and canparticipate in recreational activi-ties or do their homework.

The school also offers a vari-ety of extracurricular activitiesincluding many sports, scouts, aswell as academic and creativeprograms.

Examples of these programsare The Power of the Pen for stu-dent writers in grades seventhrough eight, Bible Bowl for stu-dents in grade six, SpeechContests for students in gradesseven and eight, an It’s AcademicTeam Competition for students ingrade eight, and student councilfor two students in grades fourthrough eight who are elected bytheir peers to represent theirgrade level.

Students in grades six througheight are servers for the dailyMass and weekend liturgies. Theseventh- and eighth-grade stu-dents can also serve as readersfor weekly schoolwide Masseseach Friday morning.

Saint Catharine offers tuitionassistance for parishioners whoqualify and also accepts vouchersfrom children who attend publicschool and meet the criteria forthe State of Ohio Ed ChoiceScholarship program.
