KEEP YOUR KIDSACTIVEHealth Kids Day is not just a single day of fun, active play and learning – it's a kick off to helping parents get a jump on creating a healthier summer. We know that during the summer, kids are more likely to gain weight and fall behind academically than during the school year.

Try these tips from PBS.org for keeping your child’s day filled with activity and learning:

1. Encourage outdoor games.

2. Explore the world around you.

3. Make TV Time active time. Encourage them to sing, dance, march along as they watch.

4. Limit TV Time.

5. Provide healthy snacks.

6. Do chores together.

7. Set a good example. Exercise regularly and eat healthy foods.

Look for this icon to find more FUN activities to keep kids growing and achieving throughout this guide.

BUILD AHEALTHY FAMILY HOMEEvery family can be a healthy family! And summer is a great time to get started. We know health begins at home, so we’re sharing with you ways your family can feel stronger and live healthier. Take small steps by using the Y’s 5 pillars of a healthy family home – Eat Healthy, Play Every Day, Get Together, Go Outside and Sleep Well.

Start creating a healthy family today!

eat HealthySmall steps lead to big changes. With a

balanced approach, even the busiest families can discover ways to eat healthier and feel better. Special treats, trips to the ice cream store

and the occasional cheeseburger are just fine when balanced against choices

that are mostly healthy and are combined with an active lifestyle.

Play every DayPlay may be the best way to prevent

childhood obesity. By putting more play into your family’s day, you will soon find yourself getting the activity that will have your family

feeling energized and strong.

Get TogetherTake Time to Get Together. Spending

regular quality time together as a family is one of the best ways to improve your family’s health and well-being. Eating together

as a family can strengthen your relationships at home and help young

people learn to be better friends at school.

Go OutsideSo many good things happen when kids

unplug and go outside to play. Kids and adults benefit from contact with nature as well as unstructured play and exploration. It sparks

imagination and helps develop social skills.

Sleep WellOne of the best ways to raise healthy kids

is to make sure they – and you – get enough sleep. Sleep plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy immune function, an active metabolism,

memory, learning and other vital functions. The good news is that eating

healthy, playing every day and going outside can all help improve the quality of the sleep you get at night.

DROWNINGPREVENTIONAccidental drowning is the leading cause of death among infants and small children in Florida, and Broward County leads the state, but the reality is accidental drowning is preventable.

3 LAYERS OF DROWNING PREVENTION

ADuLT SuPerVISION You MUST have active supervision on your child at all times while around lakes, oceans, beaches, canals, bathtubs, pools, wading pools and standing water. Children under the age of 5 should be within arm’s reach. BArrIerS AND ALArmS The more barriers and alarms in place, the SAFER your child will be. If you have a pool, install a four-sided fence around the pool that is at least 4 feet high. ALL gates and doors leading to the pool should be locked and have a self-latching, self-closing gate. Door alarms on all doors will alert you if a child opens the door to exit the home.

WATer SAFeTY INSTruCTIONEnroll your child in the YMCA Progressive Swim Lesson program. Swimming lessons provide children the opportunity to learn water safety, drowning prevention skills and how to swim. These skills could SAVE your child’s life.

TEACHING ALL CHILDREN TO BE SAFE IN AND AROUND WATERThe YMCA of Broward County offers water safety and swim lessons for children of all skill levels and different capabilities. And each year through our SPLASH drowning prevention and GoSPLASH mobile drowning prevention programs, we teach basic swimming skills and safety habits to more than 900 children across Broward County. This year’s annual SPLASH takes place May 19-22 in Lauderhill. Please contact the Lauderhill YMCA at 754.322.3608 for more information. If your apartment complex is interested in participating in GoSPLASH Mobile, contact Jackie Gizzi 954 334 9622 or [email protected]. This program is free for eligible locations.

Drowning is the number ONE killer of children ages 4 and under. These three layers of prevention can help make a child safer in, on and around the water.

Fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, all build important bonds through one-on-one time together and shared experiences with other families. Help your family stay active, strengthen their bond, gain a sense of belonging, and learn the importance of giving back.
