From the Headmaster

Dear Parents, Every week is a busy week, and as you know, there is no such thing as a 'normal' week at Wetherby Prep. You do have to be 'on it' to stay up-to-date with everything that happens at School, and those that follow our Twitter and Instagram pages will know that this week, more than most, different aspects of the school have been competing to see who can post the most interesting and significant achievement or event. On Sunday, our U11 rugby team had what was to prove to be the relative luxury of a day all to them-selves on Instagram after they dominated their group at the Berkhamsted 7s tournament, winning six out of their seven matches and, some would say, more significantly achieving 55 'likes' and 1 com-ment. What won the day over? Mrs Shanley's @mrwafflesoflondon, narrowly taking the lead, and whilst not strictly a School event, I'm claiming it all the same - good effort, Mr Waffles!

On Monday, the photos accompanying the trying coach journey with the Year 6 boys to France achieved in excess of 43 'likes' but these weren't terribly interesting, more for parent reassurance; the Wetherby Ski Team's arrival in Tonale for the IAPS Ski Champi-onships, however, snowploughed ahead with 52 'likes' of their happy and athletic poses in the Dolomites. Come Tuesday, the French Trip starts to hit its stride and le petit dejeuner photos capturing almost every boy make a great start to the day with 48 ‘likes’, backed up by a supporting 29 'likes' for the pictures of our boys with farm animals. But then qualifying for the Ski Championships starts mid-morning, and pictures and videos of the boys start to dominate the social media platform with even one of Mr Thorne, Mr Brawn and Mr Criddle chiming in with an impressive 42 'likes' and a comment. The Home Team have-n't been forgotten though and quite rightly, Mr Dean and the U9 Rugby Team win the day with 52 ‘likes’ for their triumphant achievement in winning the Ravenscourt Park Tournament. On Wednesday morning, Mrs Harris comes to see me to ask for the login details for the Instagram account as, "Nick, it's Science Week; the boys are doing lots of cool Science stuff and yet, all I’m seeing on Instragram is post after post about France and Ski-ing!" So, with solution in hand, she posted a series of images showing great fun being had with Lego robotics, fractals and Science Dome activities, magnetising a multitude of 'likes'.

And then came Thursday. The 2012 Olympics had 'Super Saturday' but this was very much our 'Thunderous Thursday'. The French Trip went into overdrive with posts about the visit to Mont St Michel, cycling around the Normandy countryside, making croissants, eating snails and cuddling guinea pigs. That's a high bar right there, but the monumental success of our Ski Team, who won Gold Medals in the Plate and Bronze Medals in the Cup at the IAPS Ski Championships amongst fierce competition, rightly harvested dozens of 'likes' and a number of comments. Perhaps an open-top bus victory parade through Bryanston Square and painting a nearby postbox in gold would garner further ‘likes’? Even then, with all of that success, achievement and a wide variety of memorable experiences for the boys, this wasn't the social media winner of the week; that lofty mantle was earned by a simple post yesterday of Mr Hal Ogden holding a cake to celebrate his birthday. That earned over 70 'likes' and a Wetherby World Record 10 'comments'.

The boys do amazing things, day after day, week after week, year after year, and the standards we are setting this year, both in and out of the classroom, are surpassing pretty much everything we have done before. Still, we are humble enough to recognise those things that are the most important: the affection and respect we have for one of our own. Well done, boys! An amazing week but more so, #HappyBirthdayHal… Have a good weekend,

Miss Kroiter’s Year 4 English Class

This week’s Citizen of the Week is Henry in 4L. Henry has had a tremendous couple of weeks, performing with aplomb at musical concerts and in Wetherby’s Got Talent last Friday. Many boys are brilliant at talking to visitors that tour the School but Henry was particularly articulate this week and is a fine ambassador for Wetherby Prep. Well done, Henry!

This week’s Sportsman of the Week is Jake

in 4M. Though new to the School, we were

alerted to Jake’s sporting prowess when

receiving his reference from his previous

school. Those references were absolutely

spot on as he has proved to be an excellent

asset to our sporting teams at Wetherby

and was a key player with our U9 success

at the Ravenscourt Tournament on Tues-

day. Well done, Jake!

Happy Birthday to the H brothers who both celebrated their birthdays in the last few weeks. Thank you for book donation, and Happy Birthday to you both!

From the Senior Master—Townsend Warner History Prize

Mr Blundell writes…

It gives me great pleasure to announce the final results of the Townsend Warner History Prize. The Townsend-Warner History

Prize, started 133 years ago, is one of the oldest institutions in the preparatory school world. It has proved enduringly popular

in encouraging the study of history. It is not linked to any national testing or examinations, but aims to provoke interest and

delight in historical reading, facts and analysis. It regularly produces winners of a remarkable calibre who write history with

much flair and knowledge.

This year, after completing a difficult Paper 1 consisting of 100 questions about mainly British history, twelve Wetherby boys

qualified to take part in Paper 2 . In order to qualify the boys had to finish in the top 250 out of 1000 candidates. 11 boys took

Paper 2 which consisted of four essay questions about a range of different topics from Emperor Hadrian, to Sir Isaac Newton

to Tony Blair.

The overall results are as follows.

Name Overall Position Paper 1 + Paper 2 = Total

James Hunter 11th 77 + 75 = 152

Luke Barker 77th 55 + 73 = 128

Javier Fernandez de Ybarra 87th 55 + 70 = 125

Arthur Kay 129th 51 + 68 = 119

Luke Leventis 153rd 49 + 66 = 115

Aki Hatzistefanis 183rd 45 + 66 = 111

Birthday Books

It is Felix’s birthday today and he has kindly donated Ghosts of Shanghai for the library. Thank you Felix and Happy Birthday!

It was extremely pleasing to see all boys represent the school and themselves so well. Luke, Douglas and Ashaan will have the chance to enter the competition again, next year. Included with the results is a final report and this line caught my eye… “Westminster Under dominated this year in terms of numbers, but there was also strong representation from King’s College Wimbledon, Summer Fields, St Paul’s Junior, Vinehall and Wetherby Prep.” Keep it up boys!

From the Science Department—Science Week!

Mrs Harris writes…

We had a great Science Week at WPS. The Year 7s and 8s enjoyed a ‘Lego Robotics’ workshop on Monday and were a credit to the school. They were all incredibly enthusiastic and persevered with the challenges. On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have the ‘Science Dome’ in school again. This year the topic was fractals. Years 3, 4 and 5 thoroughly enjoyed themselves and many boys came up to me to thank me for the experience afterwards! Along this theme, the Lower School Form Time science challenge was to build a fractal tetrahedron out of marshmallows and cocktail sticks. All forms demonstrated excellent team-work and creativity skills, the photos shared all week have been great and the final products are very impressive! The Y7s and 8s had a challenge to come up with a scientific invention. There have been many very creative and innovative ideas present-ed! Had the boys had more time they may have been able to make prototypes or models of their ideas which has encouraged the science department to run a science fair next year with more time for the boys to created their masterpieces. There has been a great science buzz around the school this week, helped by Mr Tilleray’s stickers, displays balloons and of course his exciting workshop that some of the boys managed to experience whilst waiting in the lunch queue. Thank you all, for a brilliant science week!

From Charities—Wetherby’s Got Talent

Miss Martin writes..

Last Friday saw the return of ‘Wetherby’s Got Talent’ for the Lower School. The of acts performed in the competition were

particularly impressive this year, huge congratulations to all those boys who took part! The judging panel deliberated long

and hard about the overall winner and eventually decided on the following:

3rd place – ‘HMS Talented’ – Henry Moody-Stuart for his beautiful violin rendition of a piece by Bach. It was an incredibly

technically accurate performance, so well done, Henry!

2nd place – ‘Rockstar Ilai’ – Preforming 3 songs consecutively, Ilai Arazi impressed the whole audience with his electric guitar

skills. The effects that he used and his stage presence were amazing… A future rock-star in the making!

1st place – the ‘magical’ Dunn brothers – Finlay and Thomas Dunn who performed a rendition of ‘Harry Potter in 99 seconds.’

This took us through the whole magical story of Harry Potter and a performance itself which was just brilliant! The boys learnt

their lines perfectly and it was lovely to see brothers performing so well, clearly having practised at home a great deal! Well

done!

A few comments from the judges… Miss Olney: ‘What a competition this year; the talents of the Wetherby boys continue to

amaze me! From the ‘magical’ Dunn brothers to kookaburra Coupland, the boys should feel proud of how they performed on

Friday and consider applying to Britain’s Got Talent.’

Mr Brawn: ‘I didn’t think last year’s Wetherby’s Got Talent could be topped, but all the boys who performed last Friday

proved me wrong and raised the bar of the whole competition. This was such a fun event. Well done to all involved, including

Miss Martin for deftly organising it all. I hope lots of boys feel inspired to develop their own ‘talents’ further and also to con-

sider taking part next year!’

Mrs Shanley: ‘Wetherby certainly has got talent! It was a treat for us all to feast our eyes on such outstanding acts. I was tak-

en on a journey from the depths of an inner city urban jungle to the spectacular surroundings of the Royal Albert Hall. Thank

you to all the boys and Miss Martin for a fantastic morning.’

Miss Waters: "Wetherby proves it really does have talent with such an incredible variety of unique performances, ranging from Alex Govindan popping out his meticulous MJ moves - who knew he had those hiding away? To the lightning fast, flaw-less knowledge of the world's capitals from Sid Gujrani. But at the end of the day it was these three that blew our socks off and took the top spots. The boys who 'Dunn' it... these brothers demonstrated a whole variety of brilliantly perfect-ed performance skills, all with a cheeky grin and articulation to boot, making us listen carefully and laugh our socks off - that made them Number One for me. What an incredible way to support our school charities, thank you so much for organising Miss Martin!" We have raised a brilliant £686 for our school charities from this event, thanks to the generosity of the boys. Huge thanks for

this wonderful effort!

From Trips—Isle of Wight Sailing Residential 22nd-25th May

Miss Kroiter and the Sailing Team write …

We are really looking forward to the Year 5 Sailing Residential in the summer term. The action packed trip will include; keel-ing, raft building, learning to sail dinghies and some fun evening activities. Hopefully Year 5 parents will have received my email sent out earlier this week. If not then please find attached to the Weth-erbuzz the trip letter including the Wetherby consent form (corrected dates in the letter body for those beady eyes). If all consent forms could be returned to form tutors by Monday 23rd March that would be fantastic.

WPS London to Paris Cycle

Mr Lock writes…

I am delighted to announce the first of our generous corporate sponsors for the L2P challenge. Their donations have been

used to swell the money we are able to give to our school charities this year: Rwanda Aid, Auditory Verbal UK and our own

Scholarship Fund.

Miss Kroiter and Miss Bevan write…

Our penultimate run club was blessed by gorgeous sunshine. The boys, less Year 6, had a good sprint training session with a few body weight exercises thrown in. A perfect start to the day!

From the Drama Department — School Play and LAMDA Recitals

Miss Waters writes…

Rehearsals are hotting up with less than a week to go until the much awaited Wetherby Prep School Play....

LAMDA Recital The LAMDA programme at Wetherby is invaluable, providing the boys with key performance skills, debating technique and poetic understanding. This week and last the boys had the opportunity to show off some of their performance skills at the LAMDA Recital. Both evenings were excellent with some outstanding performances from many boys across all year groups, so a huge well done to you all. It can be nerve racking to perform in front of so many people and you were fantastic! Here are a couple of pictures from the evening...

Play Poster Competition We had a competition for an eye-catching poster to advertise the show. We had some fantastic entries that were really well thought out and creative. It was a very tricky decision but we decided that Andre Davis' excellent drawing (that you can see here) captured the feeling of the play whilst hinting at the magic and humour involved. A huge well done, Andre!

**There is still a chance for you if you entered the competition as we will be using another entry on the play programme next week ... watch this space - you may be one of the winners! **

Play Tickets

Most of the boys will have the opportunity to watch the play on Thursday during the school day but there is also an even-ing performance at 7pm on Thursday 22nd March that you are more than welcome to attend with your children. We would love you to come and enjoy the play at Rudolph Steiner House and show your support for the boys so please email Miss Waters [email protected] to reserve tickets for the performance.

Play Parents...

Please can you double check that you have now sent in all costume items required for your son as I am still missing some, (especially footwear!) Please can I request that each item is labelled and that you bring them to school on Monday if there is anything missing. Please do not do not send costumes with boys to Saturdays rehearsal as we can't store them at the theatre. Thank you so much!

Taekwon Do Champs and Noah’s Ark

3P have been busy in and outside of school this week.

Kimon became a black belt in Taekwon do and Bear

made his one version of Noah’s Ark! Both boys pre-

sented their achievements to the class on Tuesday.

Well done, boys!

From the ICT Department—Touch Typing Course

Mr Bayes writes..

Naomi Martin has just been in touch to notify me that she will be running her acclaimed touch typing courses over the Easter break. We have sent many boys to Naomi over the years and the feedback has always been brilliant. If you are in London over the Easter Break and you’d like to give your son a boost in this im-portant life skill then get in touch with Naomi on [email protected] or head to her website www.nmtouchtyping.co.uk . She offers all Wetherby parents a 10% dis-count on the courses offered.

Match Reports

1st U13s Berkhamsted 7s tournament

The U13s travelled to the Berkhamsted 7s along with 63 other teams to compete in an extremely competitive and prestigious

tournament. Despite a difficult first group the boys fought hard throughout. After a re-group the U13s came out with renewed

vigour and won two out three of their afternoon matches. A great day with some exceptional rugby played. Well done, boys!

U9 C&D V Notting hill Prep

The boys battled incredibly hard and both teams came away with narrow victories. The boys maintain their unbeaten season!

Man of the match C team: Yousif Al Saffar

Man of the match D team: Taymour Auchi

U8 A&B V Notting Hill Prep

The U8 boys continued their successful rugby term by taking on Notting Hill Prep. All the boys did themselves proud and con-

gratulations to the A team for their impressive win

A team man of the match: Kimon Kantouras

B team man of the match: G Lund

U9 Franchise Rugby

It snowed, rained and at times tried to freeze us into ice cubes. Unperturbed the U9 Franchisers soldiered on through thick and

thin and once again proved that the Franchise concept is a "winner for all". In terms of competition, the Medusas ran out

league champions, and wooden spoon-ists, the Griffins pulled of the result of the season by taking the Ribena Cup. To cap off a

great season, it was really pleasing to see some of our top performers make their way up into the school's representative

teams and perform so well at that level to.

1st & 2nd 13 V Fulham Prep

The season came to a close as the senior rugby boys hosted Fulham Prep on a mild Wednesday afternoon. Both teams put in

excellent performances to end the season on a high with two great victories!

1st team man of the match: Max Adams

2nd team man of the match: Eddie Jones

Senior Franchise Rugby

The Wetherby Sports Ground could easily have been mistaken for the world’s biggest natural disaster zone over the past few

weeks as the Senior Franchise Boys Teams took the names of nature’s biggest events. Eight weeks of seismic competition saw

Wetherby Lightning, bolt into first place in the league, winning with an impressive 215 points scored in their matches. The ex-

citement wasn't to end there however, as the Wetherby Thunder rumbled home in the seasons crescendo to lift the 7Up Cup.

Rugby Tournament Success

On Sunday, the U11 A team had a fantastic day out at Berkhamsted School’s VIIs tournament. This is a national competition

with a great reputation attracting schools from all over the country. All the more impressive then, that Wetherby finished the

day with six wins from seven matches (see full results below). All the boys played superbly but special mention to Chinua Og-

bunude who scored 8 tries on the day!

v Warwick B won 15-5 (Chinua 2, Shuaib)

v Akeley Wood lost 0-20

v St Johns Northwood (Chinua 3, Chinonso)

v Caldicott B 25-15 (Jones, Chinua, Chinonso 2, Shuaib)

v Wisbech Grammar School won 35-10 (Gillanders, Jones, Scott 2, Shuaib, Chinua, Chinonso)

v Manchester Grammar School won 20-10 (Shuaib, Chinua, Chinonso 2)

v Belmont Mill Hill won 25-15 (Chinonso 2, Scott 2, Simich)

U9 winners of Ravenscourt Park Tournament

On Tuesday the U9 A team travelled to Ravenscourt Park Prep School to compete in their annual tournament. The boys

played five matches, winning the first three to top their group and qualify for the semi-final. In a good game vs The Roche the

boys demonstrated their defensive abilities to repel The Roche attack and score three break away tries to qualify for the final.

The final was an excellent display of rugby between two good teams. Defence came out on top again as both teams struggled

to break the other down with some fantastic tackling forcing knock-ons and turnovers. Even after extra time the teams could

not be separated and the game finished 10-10. This meant the trophy would go to whichever team had scored the most tries

over the course of the tournament. Wetherby’s 18 tries was enough to secure them the title, well done to all involved.

v Fulham Prep School Won 20-5 (Hurrell, Eren, Novis, Hawtin) v Kew Green School won 20-0 (Hurrell 2, Eren, Johnson) v Ravenscourt Park Prep B won 25-0 (Hurrell, Coupland, Marks, Eren, Johnson) Semi Final v The Roche won 15-5 (Hurrell 2, Marks) Final v Ravenscourt Park Prep A drew 10-10 (Hurrell 2)
