TO HONESTLY SUMMARIZE THE WORKS THAT I HAVE BEEN A PART OF SO FAR AND THE ASSOCIATED PERSPECTIVE DRIVING THEM, I CAN SAY THAT IT FUNDAMENTALLY COMES BACK TO VIEWING EACH PROJECT AS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY. EACH PROJECT AS A CHANCE TO INTERVENE IN THE PERSONAL, LOCAL, REGIONAL AND GLOBAL CONTEXTS OF SOCIETY, ECONOMY AND ECOLOGY. BECAUSE OF THE CONTEXT OF OUR TIME, IF EACH PROJECT IS AN OPPORTUNITY THEN WITH EACH PROJECT COMES THE RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE IT THE MOST EFFECTIVE, MEANINGFUL AND BEAUTIFUL WORK POSSIBLE. TO DO OTHERWISE WOULD MEAN TO HAVE WASTED THAT OPPORTUNITY AND HAVE LESSENED OUR SHARED FUTURE. I BELIEVE THAT WITH A HEIGHTENED AWARENESS OF OUR CIVILIZATIONS ROLE WITHIN OUR INTERDEPENDENT BIO-REGIONS, AND A GREATER EMPATHY FOR OUR OWN THRIVING AND STRUGGLING PEOPLE, WE AS MAKERS OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT MAY ENTER A NEW PERIOD OF DESIGN THAT TRULY SEEKS TO INTERVENE WITHIN THE EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURES OF OUR CONTEMPORARY CITIES AND ECOSYSTEMS SO AS TO ALTER THE LOCAL AND GLOBAL, FOR THE BETTER.

I WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE LEARNING HOW TO MAKE NECESSARY ARCHITECTURE. ARCHITECTURE THAT MAKES DAILY LIFE BETTER FOR PEOPLE AND THEIR COMMUNITIES, THAT RESPECTS AND ASSISTS LOCAL ECOSYSTEMS, THAT BENEFITS GREATER SOCIETY AND PLANET. FROM THE UNIVERSITY IT IS EASY AT TIMES TO THINK THAT “GOOD ARCHITECTURE” MEANS MORE GLOW ON A RENDERING, DYNAMIC ARROWS ON A SECTION, OR GRANDIOSE CLAIMS BACKED BY ENTICING DIAGRAMS. THE MORE I AM EXPOSED TO THE PROCESS OF TAKING AN ARCHITECTURAL IDEA INTO THE WORLD, THE MORE I AM AWARE OF HOW MUCH THERE IS TO LEARN BEYOND REPRESENTATION. HOW MUCH MORE THERE IS TO ARCHITECTURE THAN THE IDEALIZED IMAGES WE MAKE AND MODELS WE BUILD. HOW “GOOD ARCHITECTURE” IS A CHALLENGE TO REALLY ACHIEVE. THAT EVEN ONCE YOU’VE MADE ONE GOOD BUILDING, OR ONE GOOD SYSTEM, IT DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY FOLLOW THAT YOU WILL ACHIEVE IT TWICE. THAT RATHER THAN FINDING AN APPROACH TO REPEAT FROM PROJECT TO PROJECT, AS IT MIGHT SEEM APPROPRIATE DURING TIME AT THE UNIVERSITY, INSTEAD WHAT IS GAINED IS A SENSE FOR THE ARCHITECTURE TO COME, WHEN VIEWING ONLY THE DRAWING AT HAND. IT WOULD SEEM PRUDENT TO ACCEPT THAT WITH EACH COMBINATION OF A SITE, PROGRAM, BUDGET, USERS AND [UNTIL DISCOVERED] UNKNOWN CONTEXTS, THAT A SPECIFIC, POTENTIALLY UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL RESPONSE MAY EMERGE, IF ONLY PERMITTED.

NAM QUANG TEMPLE

LOCATION: PORTLAND, OREGON

STATUS: SCHEMATIC DESIGN

FOCUS: BUILDING AS ECOLOGICAL SCAFFOLD FLEXIBLE PROGRAM / TECTONICS SEQUENCE OF LANDSCAPE AND ARCHITECTURE THE PROPOSED DESIGN SERVES AS A NEW BEGINNING FOR THE VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST TEMPLE OF PORTLAND OREGON. WITH THIS SCHEME, TEACHINGS ARE PUT IN CLOSE PROXIMITY WITH THEIR SUBJECT MATTER: NATURE. HERE THE ARCHITECTURE SERVES TO NOT ONLY BRING ITS VISITORS INTO CLOSE RELATION WITH ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, BUT TO ACT AS SCAFFOLD FOR THE PROPAGATION OF A NEW ECOSYSTEM. A PIPED CREEK IS DAYLIT AT ONE END OF THE SITE FORMING A NEW A WETLAND. THE BUILDING LIFTS ITSELF ABOVE THE EARTH SO THAT THE SITE, ITS PROMOTED HABITAT AND HYDROLOGY MAY REMAIN CONTINUOUS. THE BUILDING ITSELF ACTS AS HOST TO PLANT AND ANIMAL LIFE, JUMPSTARTING ECOLOGICAL ACTIVITY UNDER THE STEWARDSHIP OF TEMPLE MONKS. VISITORS ENTER THE SITE WITH THE WATER ON AN OPEN SOUTHERN SIDE, TRAVELLING NORTH ALONG THE ARCHITECTURAL DATUM DEEPER INTO THE TREES, AND SACRED SPACE OF THE NORTH.

[STUDY OF PROCESSION] REVEALING THE SITE BY REVEALING THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE TEMPLE

(OPPOSITE) [ARCHITECTURE AS ECOLOGICAL SCAFFOLD]THE PROPAGATION OF AN ECOSYSTEM ALLOWS THE INTRODUCTION OF INTERDEPENDANT SPECIES, FOOD CHAINS WHICH DEVELOP OVER TIME AS WELL AS MICROCLIMATES FOR VARYING HABITAT TYPES.

[EVENT HALL] THE ENTRY TO THE TEMPLE BRINGS PEOPLE FIRST TO THE EVENT HALL, WHICH ON ONE SIDE VIEWS THE EFFECTS OF CONTAMINATED WATERS ENTERING THE SITE, ON THE OTHER LOOKING INTO THE MORE RESILIENT WETLAND OF THE INNER COURTYARD

THE YOUTH TEMPLE PLACES YOUNG PRACTITIONERS DEEPER INTO THE WETLAND CROSS SECTION, WHILE MAINTAINING PROXIMITY TO THE STREET, PRESENTING THE CONTRASTS OF LIFESTYLE BETWEEN NEARBY SUBURBAN HOUSING WITH THAT OF THE TEMPLE

THE DINING HALL RECEIVES SOUTHERN LIGHT WHILE VIEWING NORTH INTO THE SECOND COURTYARD. HERE TUBER PLANTS ARE GROWN PROVIDING FOOD FOR THE TEMPLE. DINING AND COOKING ARE DIRECTLY RELATED TO THEIR SOURCE.

(RIGHT) [SECTION AS CONNECTOR]THE BUILDING PERFORMS NOT ONLY AS A ARMATURE FOR HABITAT GROWTH, BUT AS A CONNECTOR WHEN SEEN IN SECTION. THE NEARBY TREES REACH THE ROOF, WHICH MEETS VARYING GREEN WALLS THAT LAND UPON THE WETLAND FLOOR

A MORE DEVELOPED FACADE SHOWS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SUPERSTRUCTURE, A REGULARIZED GRID UNDER AN ENCOMPASSING ROOF, AND THE FLUCTUATING SUBSTRUCTURES, ALMOST INDEPENDENT BUILDINGS NESTLED UNDERNEATH, YET STILL SUSPENDED ABOVE GROUND.

THE MODEL WAS DEVELOPED TO BE USED IN MULTIPLE WAYS. ABLE TO BE PULLED APART INTO 4 QUARTERS, IT ALLOWED ELEVATION, SECTIONAL AND PERSPECTIVE STUDIES TO BE MADE OFF OF ONE MODEL. WITH ONE QUARTER REMOVED VIEWS INTO BOTH COURTYARDS WERE MADE POSSIBLE

EUGENE CITY HALLLOCATION: EUGENE, OREGON

STATUS: SCHEMATIC & DETAIL DESIGN

FOCUS: BUILDING AS CULTURAL ARTIFACT URBAN INFILL SIMPLE FORM WITH COMPLEX DETAIL DETAIL DEVELOPMENT THIS STUDIO PROJECT FOCUSES ON A NEW CITY HALL AND CIVIC BLOCK REDESIGN WITHIN THE DOWNTOWN OF EUGENE. A SOMETIMES MISUNDERSTOOD CITY, EUGENE SITS UPON OF A MIXTURE OF SOMEWHAT DIVERGENT DEMOGRAPHICS. THIS DIVERGENCE OF SUB-CULTURES (OF WHOM SOME ARE PARTICULARLY NOSTALGIC), CAN LEAD TO THE LACK OF A SHARED CULTURAL IDENTITY, ESPECIALLY WITHIN THE CIVIC CORE. THE AIM OF THIS INTERVENTION IS TO TIE TOGETHER THE DIFFERENT CULTURAL GROUPS OF EUGENE. THE NEW CITY HALL RECALLS A FUNDAMENTAL FORM AND AN ARCHETYPAL ATMOSPHERE, WHICH IS THEN ARTICULATED WITH CONTEMPORARY IDEAS OF SPACE, FUNCTION AND DETAIL. THE ENVELOPE BECOMES A SHELL, ADMITTING RAYS OF LIGHT BY LOUVERS TO THE INTERIOR SUSPENDED PROGRAMMATIC VOLUMES, THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS PROJECTING OUTWARD TOWARD VIEW FROM THE CITY. THE BUILDING ACTS AS A LARGE ATRIUM, PULLING AIR FROM THE NEARBY GARDEN, RADIATING WARMTH THROUGH THE SUSPENDED INTERNAL PLATFORMS.

[A NEW CENTER] THE CITY HALL BECOMES A CATALYST FOR THE DOWNTOWN AREA [THE BUILDING] WITHIN THE SHELL OF LOUVERS, INTERIOR VOLUMES AND CIRCULATION FLOAT WITHIN THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS TAKE PLACE USUALLY IN THE EVENING. THE COUNCIL AS A VOLUME PROJECTS FROM THE BUILDING BECOMING A GLOWING OBJECT SHOWCASING THE INNER ACTIVITY OUTWARDS TOWARDS VIEW BY THE CITY.

[FLOATING TECTONICS] (OPPOSITE)

THE CITY HALL IS GIVEN A SPECIFIC TECTONIC LANGUAGE WHERE THE STRUCTURE STANDS SEPARATE OTHER ELEMENTS. VOLUMES OF PROGRAM AND PATHWAYS SIT SUSPENDED BY 12 INCHES IN ALL DIRECTIONS. ON THE EXTERIOR THE SHELL OF LOUVERS STANDS 24 INCHES FROM THE STRUCTURE.

[ GROUND FLOOR ]

THE BUILDING IS SPLIT INTO FIVE ZONES IN PLAN. TWO ATRIUMS AT EITHER CITY BLOCK CORNER (THE NORTH AND SOUTH EDGES), SEPARATED FROM THE CENTRAL OFFICE AREA BY VERTICAL CORES OF CIRCULATION AND MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT. IN THIS WAY THE BUILDING PROVIDES TWO CEREMONIAL ENDS FOR THE BLOCK, KEEPING FUNCTIONAL AREAS IN BETWEEN. THE SOUTHERN ATRIUM, WHICH HOLDS THE COUNCIL CHAMBER, CAN OPEN COMPLETELY ON THE BOTTOM FLOOR TO THE OUTER PLAZA. THE LARGER ATRIUM AND COUNCIL CHAMBER MAY BECOME PART OF THE PUBLIC REALM.

[ SECOND FLOOR ]

AFTER ENTERING THE SOUTHERN ATRIUM, ONE MAY WALK UP THE MAIN STAIR UP TO THE SECOND LEVEL TAKING THE CATWALK ACROSS THE TRIPLE HEIGHT SPACE TO THE SEEMINGLY FLOATING COUNCIL CHAMBER VOLUME. DEEPER INSIDE THE BUILDING, THE OFFICE AREA BECOMES A SERIES OF LEVITATING FLOORS WHICH ARE CUT BY SHAFTS OF LIGHT AND A SUB ATRIUM AT CENTER. SMALLER VERSIONS OF THE COUNCIL CHAMBER VOLUME LIE TO THE WESTERN EDGE OF THE BUILDING AND PROJECT OUT TO THE STREET AS MEETING ROOMS AND ENCLOSED OFFICE AREA.

[ THIRD FLOOR ]

THE SOUTHERN ATRIUM’S VERTICAL PROGRESSION CONTINUES, ALLOWING ONE TO REACH THE COUNCIL CHAMBER’S MEZZANINE LEVEL. THE MAYOR’S OFFICE IS ADDED TO THE NORTHERN ATRIUM AGAIN AS A PERCEPTIBLE VOLUME, HUNG INSIDE OF THE STRUCTURE. BETWEEN THE TWO ATRIUMS THE OFFICE AREAS CONTINUE TO LAYER WITH LIGHT FALLING BETWEEN THE GAPS OF PATHS AND ROOMS.

[ FOURTH FLOOR ]

THE FOURTH FLOOR PROVIDES MORE OPEN OFFICE AREA FOR THE ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT FUNCTIONS, AND IS PLACED WITHIN THE ACTUAL GABLE ITSELF. HERE LIGHT COMES NOT FROM THE SIDES OF THE BUILDING BUT FROM ABOVE WITH THE CONTINUOUS LIGHT MONITOR THAT LIES AT THE CREST OF THE ROOF. A UNIQUE MOMENT IS CREATED ON THE EDGE OF THE SOUTHERN ATRIUM, WHERE A FINAL MEETING ROOM IS PLACED AT THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE TRIPLE HEIGHT SPACE, ABLE TO LOOK UPON THE COUNCIL CHAMBER FROM ABOVE AND FAR BELOW TO THE ENTRY OF THE BUILDING.

DEXTER LAKE BOAT HOUSE

LOCATION: DEXTER, OREGON

STATUS: SCHEMATIC DESIGN

FOCUS: CONTEXTUAL RESPONSES PROCESSION FROM LAND TO LAKE EFFECTS OF TIME ON MATERIAL EXPLORATION OF “REGIONAL” TECTONICS

THIS PROJECT WAS GENERATED FROM A CAREFUL AND PARTICULAR RESPONSE TO THE EXISTING CONTEXT OF A SITE. LOCATED ON ONE OF THE LARGEST LAKES IN THE REGION, THIS BOAT HOUSE WAS TO SERVE AS AN INTERMEDIARY BETWEEN LAND AND WATER

HERE THE ARCHITECTURE CHOSE TO PULL BACK FROM THE EXISTING NODES OF PLACES ALREADY INHERENT ON THE SITE. RATHER THAN BECOME THE CENTER, THE BUILT MASSING FURTHER ARTICULATES THE EDGE OF THE CENTER. PEOPLE AND OUTDOOR PROGRAM ARE WRAPPED BY THE ARCHITECTURE IMBEDDED IN THE LANDSCAPE

IN THIS WAY, THE COMPLEX BECOMES A LENS, THROUGH WHICH ONE MAY ENGAGE THE WATER. THE BUILDING STEPS BACK AND EMBRACES THE ACTIVITY IT HOLDS. OVER TIME THE COMPLEX WILL AGE, ITS MATERIALS GATHERING THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE AND WEARING THEM OPENLY.

THE CONCEPT WAS ROOTED IN AN IDEA OF SEQUENCE FROM LAND TO WATER. A SEQUENCE THAT SHIFTS NOT ONLY VERTICALLY WITH THE CHANGING OF TOPOGRAPHY BUT HORIZONTALLY, BACK AND FORTH TO THE SHIFTING ROOMS CREATED BY EXISTING OUTCROPPING OF TREES.

THIS EXPERIENCE BECOMES ONE OF COMPRESSION AND EXPANSION, THE TREES TIGHTENING AND OPENING FROM ROOM TO ROOM OF THE OUTDOOR SITE. IT WAS HOPED THAT THE ARCHITECTURE COULD CONTRIBUTE AND MAGNIFY THIS EXPERIENCE UNTIL THE END OF THE SEQUENCE: THE VASTNESS OF THE LAKE

[COURTYARD-YEAR 1] THE COMPLEX BEGINS BRIGHT, AN AMBER GLOW UPON THE HORIZON AS ITS ROOFS REFLECT LIGHT AND ITS CEDAR WOOD ACCEPTS WARMTH.

[COURTYARD-YEAR 60] OVER TIME THE BOAT HOUSE AGES, ITS ROOFS TURNING GREEN TO BLEND WITH THE NEARBY TREES, THE CEDAR TURNING GREY AND SEEMING OF THE EARTH. TIME IS RECORDED.

THE MOST USED ROOM IS PLACED AT THE MOSTPROMINENT LOCATION OF THE SITE AT THE HEIGHT OF

[GRAND STAIR] A LARGE STAIR WITH SIDE AREA FOR SEATING BECOMES THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE COURTYARD ABOVE AND THE LAUNCHING DECK BELOW AT THE EDGE OF THE LAKE

[TRAINING ROOM FACADE] THOUGH AN EXPRESSIVE AND COVERING ROOF WAS DESIRED, NATURAL LIGHT WAS STILL A NECESSITY. TO DELIVER LIGHT DURING EVEN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER, OPENINGS WERE ALLOWED IN THE AWNING AND LOUVERS WERE USED TO CONTROL EXPOSURE

A MAIN ROOM FOR EVENTS, THE LOOKOUT JUTS SOUTHWEST OUT OF A BAND OF TREES TO EXPOSE THE COMPLEX TO THE LAKE

SALEM POLICE STATION

[SUSTAINABLE CITIES INITIATIVE]

LOCATION: SALEM, OREGON

STATUS: CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR CITY REVIEW STUDIO AWARDED NCARB PRIZE 2011

FOCUS: SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS (BUILDING & DISTRICT) HABITAT RESTORATION URBAN CONNECTIVITY

SUSTAINABLE CITIES INITIATIVE (SCI) IS A UNIVERSITY OF OREGON ARCHITECTURE EFFORT TO PAIR DESIGN STUDIOS WITH ACTUAL CITIES AND THEIR STAFF. FOR THE YEAR OF 2010-11 OREGON’S CAPITAL OF SALEM WAS CHOSEN. PROPOSED FOR THE STUDIO WAS A REVITALIZATION OF THE CITIES BRUTALIST CIVIC CENTER AND A NEW POLICE STATION. THOUGH LOCATED IN A CENTRAL PART OF THE CITY, THE CIVIC CENTER CURRENTLY STOPS ALL FLOWS OF PEDESTRIANS, INTER DISTRICT CONNECTIONS AND ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS. THIS PARTICULAR DESIGN TRIED TO RECONNECT THE SITE TO THE REST OF THE CITY, USING THE NEW POLICE STATION AS A CATALYST ON THE EMPTY NORTHERN PART OF THE CIVIC CENTER

THE PROGRAM ON EITHER SIDE OF THE PARK CAN BRING REAL ACTIVITY AND ALLOW FOR PATHS TO TIE THE NEARBY DISTRICTS TOGETHER. THIS PROJECT CAN SERVE AS AN EXAMPLE OF PASSIVE AND ACTIVE SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS FOR THE REST OF SALEM’S PUBLIC OR PRIVATE DEVELOPMENT, AS WELL AS THE REST OF THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY.

SUNLIGHT IS BLOCKED ON THE POLICE STATION’S SOUTHERN EDGE BY AN EXISTING GROVE OF TREES. HIGHER IN THE ATRIUM, ALTERABLE LOUVERS CONTROL SOLAR LIGHT AND HEAT GAIN. WHAT HEAT DOES GATHER WITHIN THE ATRIUM IS PULLED UPWARD THROUGH STACK EFFECT AND ALLOWED OUT THE TOP OF THE OPEN CEILING VENTS. WITH THIS EVACUATION COMES THE PULL OF COOLER AIR FROM THE CANTILEVERED NORTHERN EDGE OF THE BUILDING. OPEN FLOORS ALLOW AIR TO CIRCULATE FREELY AS NEEDED THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE BUILDING. THE ATRIUM BECOMES A PLACE OF RETREAT DURING THE WARM SUMMER, WHERE NATURE IS STILL PRESENT. TREES GROW AND BIOSWALES FILTER THE RUNOFF OF ANY RAIN EVENTS. THE ECOLOGY OF THE OUTDOORS IS ALLOWED TO PERMEATE INWARDS RIGHT UP TO THE EDGE OF AN INDIVIDUALS WORK SPACE.

WITH THE CHANGE OF SEASONS THE GROVE OF NEARBY TREES LOSES ITS LEAVES, ALLOWING SUNLIGHT AND HEAT TO PENETRATE THE FRONT SIDE OF THE ATRIUM. ABOVE, THE LOUVERS ROTATE TO ALLOW LIGHT TO PENETRATE. IN THIS WAY DURING EVEN THE MOST OVERCAST OF WINTER DAYS, THE ENTIRE POLICE STATION MAY HAVE AS MUCH LIGHT AS POSSIBLE. WITH THE RETAINING OF HEAT AND INTERMITTENT PRESENCE OF UV LIGHT, THE ATRIUM TREES AND BIOSWALES MAY STAY FLUSH WITH LEAVES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THE ATRIUM SERVES AS A CONTAINER OF GAINED HEAT WHICH IS THEN RADIATED OUT INTO THE OFFICE FLOORS. IF AT ANY POINT THE INTERIOR TEMPERATURE WERE TO RAISE TOO HIGH, THE STACK VENTS MAY BE OPENED TO REACH A DESIRED LEVEL.

(OPPOSITE) [THE NEW CIVIC CENTER CAMPUS] THE OLD CIVIC CENTER LIES TO THE SOUTH AND IS PARALLELED BY THENEW POLICE STATION. THE PARK IS PROVIDED TWO PROGRAMMATICBOOKS ENDS, CAUSING NEW REASONS TO USE THE SPACE BETWEEN.CONNECTIONS STRETCH BACK AND FORTH ACROSS THE CAMPUS

THE OLD CIVIC CENTER ATRIUM TO THE SOUTH OF THE NEW POLICE STATION MIGHT BE REIMAGINED. CURRENTLY IT IS A NORTHERN FACING ATRIUM, TOO DARK AND TOO COLD DUE TO ITS ORIENTATION. IT MIGHT BE RE AWAKENED THROUGH INTERVENTION

THE GLASS OF THE ATRIUM REMOVED, LEFT OPEN TO THE SKY ABOVE PERMITTING LIGHT AND WARMTH. HUNG FROM A SCAFFOLD, CEDAR 8”X8” MEMBERS HANG LOW, CONVERTING THE BRUTALIST STRUCTURE INTO A MORE ORGANIC, SOFT-ENED SPACE. WITH LIGHT GLANCING OFF THE WOODEN COLOR.

CONDENSATION HARVESTER

[DRYLANDS COMPETITION, SHOWN AT A+D]

LOCATION: SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

STATUS: COMPETITION ENTRY (SELECTED FOR EXHIBITION)

FOCUS: WATER CATCHMENT FROM AIR VAPOR LOCAL COMMUNITY LIVING AROUND RESOURCES VISIBILITY OF WATER SYSTEMS AND USE THIS ENTRY’S CONCEPT WAS A WATER HARVESTING SYSTEM BASED UPON CONDENSING WATER VAPOR HELD IN THE AMBIENT AIR. HUMID AIR IS DRAWN IN THE BASE OF THE BUILDING, TRAVELLING UP THROUGH A WRAPPING DOUBLE ENVELOPE STACK VENT. UPON REACHING THE TOP OF THE STRUCTURE, AIR IS FORCED TO PASS THROUGH A LARGE COOLING MANIFOLD WHICH STAYS CONTINUALLY AT THE SAME TEMPERATURE AS THE EARTH. THE HOT AIR MEETS A MUCH COOLER SURFACE AND CONDENSES, SHEDDING MOST OF ITS HELD WATER. THE AIR IS ALLOWED TO ESCAPE WHILE THE NOW LIQUID WATER VAPOR FALLS DOWN THROUGH THE HIGH RISE FOR USE BY ITS INHABITANTS. ONCE THIS WATER IS USED, IT IS TAKEN BACK TO THE TOP AND ALLOWED TO CASCADE THROUGH A SERIES OF BIOSWALES WHICH ALLOWS A REUSE OF MOST CAPTURED WATER.

BEFORE RECYCLING UP TO 15,000 GALLONS OF WATER CAN BE HARVESTED A DAY, BASED UPON RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS USING ALREADY CONDUCTED EXPERIMENTS OF CONDENSATION AS THE STRUCTURE FOR COMPUTER MODELING. AFTER CONTINUOUS RECYCLING ALMOST 100,000 GALLONS OF WATER MAY STAY IN CONSTANT CIRCULATION. IF ASSUMING A 10% LOSS OF WATER (UNABLE TO BE RECYCLED).

FOCUS: SIMPLICITY AND FLEXIBILITY FOR THE ARTS THIS COMPETITION CALLED FOR AN INSTALLATION FOR THE SPACE BETWEEN TWO GALLERIES, BELOW THE RECENTLY RENOVATED NEW YORK “HIGHLINE” RAIL PARK. THE INSTALLATION WOULD THEN BECOME AN OUTDOOR EXTENSION OF THE NEARBY GALLERIES. OUR ENTRY WAS BASED UPON CREATING A SIMPLE SYSTEM FROM WHICH MANY THINGS COULD HAPPEN, ACOUSTICALLY, VISUALLY, SPATIALLY, VOLUMETRICALLY AND ARTISTICALLY. WHAT DEVELOPED WAS THE “PATTERN BOX.” AN OTHERWISE NON-DESCRIPT MASS OF WOODEN MEMBERS THAT WITHOUT INTERVENTION WOULD LIE DORMANT, UNTIL AWAKENED THROUGH USE FOR ART OR PERFORMANCE. THESE PATTERN BOXES MAY ALLOW FOR AS MUCH AS ONE CAN IMAGINE THEM TO BE.

[THE FRAME] WELDED STEEL, ATTACHED INTERNALLY BY CROSS BRACES OUT OF PLANE OF THE WOOD MEMBERS. THIS IS THE ACTUAL STRUCTURAL SYSTEM, WHICH SLIGHTLY ELEVATES THE PATTERN BOX ABOVE THE GROUND.

[THE INFILL] 6”X6” MEMBERS INFILL THE FRAME, HIDING THE INTERNAL BRACING AS WELL AS THE FRAME. AT THE EDGES, SMALL TIPS OF THE FRAME ARE ALLOWED OUTSIDE THE MASS, TO HOLD THE EDGE MEMBERS AS WELL AS GIVING A SLIGHT INCLINATION OF SOME HIDDEN STRUCTURE

[THE BOX] THE MASS IS DEFINED NOT BY THE STRUCTURE BUT BY WHAT IS HELD BY THE STRUCTURE. THE WOODEN MEMBERS BECOME A MOVEABLE AND ALTERABLE AMORPHOUS MASS THAT MAY LIE DORMANT OR BURST OUT INTO IMPROMPTU FORM

FOCUS: DECONSTRUCTABLE STRUCTURE COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT (DESIGN & BUILD) STUDENT LED AND CARRIED OUT PROCESS THE SMALL FARMERS PROJECT IS A YOUNG CO-OP FARMING GROUP OF LATINO FAMILIES NORTH OF EUGENE. DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE FARM WAS INCREASING ITS PRODUCTION (NEEDING A WALK-IN COOLER AND TRACTOR SHED) AND THE POSSIBILITY THAT THEIR LEASED LAND WOULD BE TAKEN FROM THEM; DESIGNBRIDGE, A STUDENT RUN DESIGN BUILD PROGRAM, LOOKED TO FIND A WAY TO HELP

OUR PROJECT, WHICH LASTED ONE YEAR, BECAME FOCUSED AROUND ENCAPSULATING THE IDENTITY AND FUNCTION OF A COMMUNITY INTO ONE SIMPLE, AFFORDABLE, ALL PURPOSE, (AND MOVEABLE) STRUCTURE. WHAT BEGAN AS MERELY AN ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT BECAME AN INTERDEPENDENT RELATIONSHIP, BASED ON TRUST AND TRULY GOOD WILL. WHAT DEVELOPED WAS A CLEAR AND CONCISE FORM, WHICH IN ITS DETAIL WAS INCREDIBLY UNIQUE. WITH JUST A WRENCH MORE THAN 2/3 OF THE BUILDING MAY BE DISASSEMBLED.

IN THE FALL, WE BEGAN CONCEPTUALIZING AND SCHEMING WITH OUR INCREDIBLY PATIENT CLIENTS. DURING THE WINTER WE DEVELOPED THE DESIGN IN DETAIL, AND BY SPRING STARTED TO BUILD OUR ALMOST 600 SQFT BUILDING. THROUGH ALL KINDS OF REAL WORLD CHALLENGES OUR IDEAS AND INTENT PERSEVERED, TEACHING ALL

FOCUS: USE OF 90% RECYCLED MATERIALS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT (DESIGN & BUILD) MARINE CONSERVATION EDUCATION THE SMALL ISLAND OF MANTANANI (1 MILE LONG, 1/2 WIDE) IS A HALF HOUR BOAT RIDE FROM THE NEAREST MAINLAND PORT. TO A WESTERNER IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IDEALIZED LANDSCAPES. HERE THOUGH, THE ENVIRONMENT IS OFTEN UNREALIZED AS A DELICATE AND ALL ENCOMPASSING THING.

DUE TO CYANIDE FISH BOMBING, IMPROP-ER WASTE MANAGEMENT AND THE OVER USE OF WATER FROM THE ISLANDS SMALL AQUIFER, THE MANTANANI COMMUNITY FACES A GRAVE SITUA-TION. FISH LEVELS (THEIR MAIN SOURCE OF FOOD AND INCOME) ARE DROPPING, AND THEIR CLEAN WATER POSSIBLY GONE WITHIN 30 YEARS.

IN RESPONSE TO THIS INCREASINGLY DIRE SITUATION OUR TEAM OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND YOUNG ARCHITECTS SET TO THE DESIGN AND BUILDING OF AN EDUCATION CEN-TER, SO AS TO ALTER THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE ISLANDS BEST HOPE, ITS YOUNG (AND WITTY) CHILDREN.

IT WAS OUR GREAT PRIVILEGE TO WORK ALONGSIDE THE ISLANDS CHIEF: ALBI, HIS FAMILY AND THE MANY KIDS OF THE ISLAND.

A GROUP OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND YOUNG ARCHITECTS CAME TO-GETHER TO FIND AN APPROACH THAT REFLECTED THIS UNIQUE LOCATION AND SET OF PROBLEMS

A SLIGHT SHIFT FROM WESTERN PRACTICE, BUILDING HERE MEANT NO ELECTRICITY AND THEREBY NO POWER TOOLS, AND MOST OFTEN, NO SHOES. OSHA VIOLATIONS NEED NOT APPLY.

[THE AXIS] OUR DESIGN WAS SOMEWHAT JARRING FOR THE LOCALS BECAUSE OF ITS ORIENTATION, WITH ITS ROOF SPANNING THE MAIN PATHWAY OF THE ISLAND (WE CALLED IT HIGHWAY 1). UPON WALKING UNDERNEATH THE ROOF THEY WOULD SEE AN AXIS THROUGH THE LENGTH OF THE BUILDING, POINTING TOWARDS THE OCEAN THEY DEPEND UPON SO HEAVILY.

THE MID LEVEL GAINS EXTRA AREA DUE TO THE DROPPING OF THE CONCERT HALL BY ONE FLOOR, ALLOWING A MEETING ROOM TO BE PLACE NEARBY THE DOUBLE HEIGHT FACADE, BRINGING ACTIVITY TO THE PLAZA FRONT

THE ATTIC AREA IS LEFT MAINLY UNTOUCHED, WITH THE CURRENT CURTAIN DIVISIONS IN THE MIDDLE BEING REPLACED BY A THEATER BOX. THIS ALLOWS SECONDARY OFFICE SPACES PRIVACY AND QUIET FROM THE ACTIVE IMPROV STAGE

DUE TO ITS POPULARITY THE BUILDING HAS BECOME FILLED WITH SECONDARY USES, AND REACHES MAXIMUM CAPACITIES FOR ITS WELL ATTENDED CONCERTS. OUT OF NEED FOR MORE GENERAL SPACE AND CONCERT SEATING, IT WAS ASKED THAT THE KARLSTORBAHNHOF BE EXPANDED BUT WITH MINIMAL ALTERATION TO ITS HISTORIC FACADES.

THE WINNING CONCEPT LOWERS THE CONCERT HALL BY ONE FLOOR INTO THE BASEMENT, OPENING UP THE SECOND LEVEL FOR MORE SPACE WHILE CREATING A NEW ENTRANCE TO THE CONCERT HALL THAT ACTIVELY ENGAGES THE UNUSED PLAZA. WITH THIS APPROACH, OVERALL FLOOR AREA GREATLY INCREASES WITH NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR INCLUDED PROGRAM WITH LITTLE CHANGE TO THE FACADES.

WHEN ENTERING SCHOOL, THE DETAIL APPEARS IN ALL HONESTY AS EITHER DIFFICULT OR UNINTERESTING TO THE STUDENT.
