2018 Annual Report

What Does A

CaregiverLook Like?

The needs of individuals with disabilities and caregivers brought more people than ever to Easterseals for exceptional services and support in 2018. These needs were met through a variety of services, ranging from children’s therapies, to employment training and support, to attendant services for independent living, to adult day care for the aging, and respite care. Easterseals delivered direct care to approximately 7,600 individuals inneed last year. Another 25,000 individuals sought out Easterseals for information, referral and educational training. More than 94% of Easterseals’ revenue went directly to support the services for the people we serve.

Here are some highlights of the year that your support made possible:

• As Volleyball Ambassador, Emily led the charge and helped Easterseals raise more than $300,000 at the 2018 Easterseals / CAI Volleyball Challenge. (Emily pictured above.)

• Our Memory Care program continued to grow – a sign of the growing need by caregivers of loved ones with dementia and early onset Alzheimer’s.

• Children’s Therapy Services grew by 7% as we served more than 2,145 individuals.

• Easterseals helped lead the advocacy drive to secure passage of the Michael McNesby Act, a commitment by the State of Delaware to fully fund services for adults with intellectual disabilities in the state. Continued advocacy is needed in the future to make sure the state approves the dollars to meet this commitment. • The annual Walk With Me Delmarva hit a record high in fundraising, reaching $53,000!

Dear Friends of Easterseals,

“There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.” -Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter

• Our Annual Dinner highlighted several Easterseals family caregivers while focusing on the urgent need for services to support caregivers who are caring for the most vulnerable in the community.

• Easterseals’ annual Caregiver Conference hosted a record number of participants.

• 100% of those responding to a survey indicated satisfaction with services provided by Easterseals. See full performances measures here.

While there were many successes, the year brought a reminder of continued challenges. Funding for services to caregivers through our Community Outreach Program

remain insufficient to meet the need. In addition, the opioid crisis in both Delaware and Maryland continues to have a tragic impact on the littlest ones we serve in Children’s Therapy Services requiring intense treatment.

We look ahead to 2019 with gratitude for your past support and hopeful anticipation that you will partner with us to meet these and other challenges in the days ahead. Thank you for helping assure that Easterseals can continue to be a vital resource for people living with disabilities, seniors, caregivers and families.

Thank you for taking action for Easterseals!

Sincerely,

Kenan J. Sklenar President/CEO

All Abilities, Limitless Possibilities

What Does ACaregiver Look Like?

Sometimes a caregiver looks like a

husband, caring for a wife of 37 years

who has had a debilitating stroke –

like Emory and Tish. Because of the

generous support of donors, Tish

is able to attend the Easterseals

adult day program, making life a

little more manageable for Emory and

allowing him to keep her living at home.

“Easterseals has been a lifesaver,” says Emory.

“For me, just the fact that I know she’s going to be well taken care of during the

day…she’s going to be safe and all her needs are going to be addressed…I’m

grateful for that.”

“I’ve told Tish that I’m going to take care of you as long as I can. If it gets to the

point where I can’t, and if we go to a nursing home, we’ll just go to a nursing home

together. But as long as I can take care of you, then that’s what we’re going to do.

Easterseals helps me do that.” See their story here.

Emory and Tish

Some Moms are Caregivers for a Lifetime

When a child is born with a lifetime

disability, moms like Julia must carry

the responsibilities of intense

caregiving into adulthood. Julia has

peace of mind knowing that her

25-year-old daughter, Emily, is safe,

happy and learning new skills to build

her independence at the Easterseals

day program for adults with intellectual

disabilities.

“When your child is mostly nonverbal, it multiplies your fears

for their safety, tremendously. You must find people, like I have found at Easterseals,

that you can trust,” says Julia. “Having this day program for Em is especially

important for people like us who have no family in the area. As long as Easterseals

continues to exist, I know that she will be safe and happy during the day so I can

work. We truly depend on this program, and can’t imagine our lives without it.”

Emily and Julia

Sometimes Caregivers are Grandparents

Donna’s life took an unexpected turn when she

found out that she needed to become the

caregiver for her grandson, Brayden,

who was born addicted.

Donna shares, “When Brayden was

born I was told that he was addicted

and that it was going to be a long

road for him to recover. It was really

overwhelming.”

With the help of intense physical and

occupational therapy through Easterseals

Children’s Therapy Services, Donna has learned how to help Brayden through the

pain of his recovery so he can begin to meet developmental milestones.

“Before, his legs and his arms would tense up so bad that I couldn’t even change

his diaper. I would feel like I was going to break his arms, like snap them, that they

were so tight. Now we’re getting to the point where I can change him, I’m not scared.

I’m seeing the relief in his pain,” says Donna. “I was in a panic when I first found out

what he was going to go through. I know how to deal with it now and it’s because of

the help of Easterseals.” See their story here.

Donna and Brayden

Easterseals Steps In When Children Become Caregivers for Parents

Like thousands of adult children across our

state, Cynthia is caring for her aging

parent. Because of Easterseals,

Cynthia is able to keep her mom,

Mary, living at home. Mary, who is

86-years-old and has dementia,

enjoys coming to Easterseals every

day and Cynthia has peace of mind

knowing her mom is well taken care

of and happy.

“When Mom first came to live with me, she had

dementia, she was showing signs of it and things were

not that great. However, a little after she was here, like over the past year, she has

experienced a great decline.” Cynthia says, “Easterseals means everything to me.

To have that level of care and people that really care for her, means everything. I

don’t have to worry about her, when she gets on that bus to go into Easterseals, I

know she’s safe and I get a break.” See their story here.

Cynthia and Mary

Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore touched the lives of 32,601 people with disabilities and their families in FY18 through direct and indirect services. Direct services included: • 732 adults with intellectual disabilities who participated in community-based services at Easterseals, including those in supported-employment and pre-vocational services.

• 2,515 adults with disabilities and/or conditions of aging who relied on Easterseals for Personal Attendant or In-Home Services to help with activities of daily living, allowing them to remain living independently in their community.

• 187 adults with disabilities or aging conditions who were provided a safe and supportive place to come each day through our adult day care services.

• 875 children and adults who benefited from recreation and respite at Camp Fairlee, including Fairlee Vacations and special camp sessions for children with autism.

• 2,145 children and adults with a variety of disabilities who received the services of our highly qualified therapists.

• 244 individuals who benefited from assistive technology services at Easterseals.

• 897 individuals were served through our Community Outreach Program, including our Resource and Technology Demonstration Center, assistive technology low interest loan program, case management services, and the Caregiver Resource Center.

In addition, Easterseals indirect services benefited 25,006 individuals with disabili-ties and their families through Easterseals

outreach activities such as education and training, information and referral services and

disability education awareness.

Total operating revenue last year was $51.5 million. Underfunded services totaled $1.5 million, requiring

Easterseals to seek additional support through foundation and corporate grants and individual donors.

FRIENDS OF EASTERSEALS (Continued)

The Annual Dinner was an inspiring evening featuring

nationally recognized expert on caregiving, Peter

Rosenberger, and celebrating the vital role of

Easterseals in supporting family caregivers.

Peter, pictured on the left, with Easterseals

President/CEO Ken Sklenar and Easterseals

supporters Carol Barnett and Steve Slotkin, talked

about the importance of caregivers in our community and

the need to support these unsung heroes.

The evening also featured the personal story of Julia Hurst, who shared the impor-

tance of Easterseals services to her and her daughter, Emily, as well as what life is

like as a caregiver.

Once again, the auction of several beautiful pieces of art

created by participants in our Easterseals

programs was greatly appreciated by guests

at the dinner this year.

See the many faces of Easterseals

caregivers here. To learn more about all

of the Easterseals services and

supports for caregivers, go to

“Mommy, Mommy, listen,” five-year-old Stella

squeals as she claps her hands together. Tears

spring to her mom’s eyes as she hears her

daughter clap for the very first time.

Learning how to clap was a big accomplishment for

Stella, the 2018 Easterseals Walk With Me Delmarva

Ambassador. Born premature, Stella fought many

complications early in life, including having a stroke at birth.

“I am profoundly proud of Stella. From seeing her for the first time in the intensive

care unit to current times, she has been a fighter,” her dad, Jim, says. “Stella has

not let anything stand in her way. I’m grateful to Easterseals for that.”

Thanks to your support of events like Walk With Me

Delmarva, families like Stella’s are celebrating new

milestones through Easterseals.

Ambassador Stella Leads the Way at Walk With Me Delmarva!

Thank you!

The 38th Annual Easterseals / CAI Volleyball

Challenge was once again held at William Penn

High School in New Castle, Delaware. The

weekend hosted over 1,500 people playing

volleyball, sponsoring, and volunteering to

raise funds and awareness of Easterseals

services.

Title sponsor CAI and founding sponsor Canada Dry hit

the courts to explore their ‘spiking’ and ‘setting’ skills. The 13th

annual legislative match pairing Delaware Democrats vs. Republicans was exciting

to watch __ with the Republicans taking the win. The corporate challenge included

teams from Barclays, Capital One and Delmarva Power, with the trophy going to

Delmarva Power. Area high schools Conrad Schools of Science and William Penn

held their challenge on Sunday afternoon with William Penn

leading in fundraising __ and everyone having a blast

on the courts!

Thanks to all the sponsors, teams, and

volunteers, the weekend event raised over

$300,000 to support Easterseals services!

The 2018 Bill Adami Fund for Innovation was awarded to the

Easterseals “Artfulness” program, creating a more

inclusive art program for the participants of Easterseals.

The program sponsors local artists to teach art classes

at Easterseals locations statewide, allowing Easterseals

participants to experience community activities at local

art museums and galleries, like this recent exhibit at the

Biggs Museum in Dover.

The Adami Fund for Innovation honors the legacy of Easterseals late

President/CEO, William J. Adami. To help fund future projects like “Artfulness”,
