The Historic New Castle Alliance attended a WILMAPCO (Wilmington Area Planning Council) meeting to support James Wilson, Executive Director of Bike Delaware, and his efforts to create a bike path that will connect

Wilmington and New Castle…known as the Industrial Track. The WILMAPCO Technical Advisory Committee and the Committee voted to amend the TIP (Transportation Improvement Program) to include the Industrial Track and to program $480,000 in federal transportation matching dollars to go along with a $120,000 commitment from DNREC to advance it to construction. WILMAPCO | Transportation Improvement Program (TIP)

The HNCA has written a letter of support for the Route 9 and 13 Corridors Economic Development Plan developed by New Castle County Office of Economic Redevelopment. They feel the area would greatly benefit from a targeted economic development plan. The area economy is struggling, as many of the manufacturing and chemical companies that once were located in the corridor have moved or closed operations.  This has resulted in higher rates of unemployment, an excess of brownfields and other social and economic issues. The economic development plan accomplishes many of the Economic Development Administration’s priorities. Through coordinating the infrastructure of the Port of Wilmington, New Castle Airport, highways, passenger and freight rail service, the plan will identify opportunities for small and existing businesses to better use this infrastructure to grow and expand operations, and increase exports.  It will invest in the workforce through job training programs.  The presence of brownfields and vacant sites along the planning area has long been a disadvantage.  By developing an area-wide plan for brownfield redevelopment, the economic development plan will help to revitalize this community and support sustainable development.  Currently, they are applying for a grant to begin a feasibility study. HNCA has also committed to sending a small financial contribution in support of this grant application.  We are one of 5 local organizations contributing to this grant application.

Cold Cereal 101Either processed or whole grain

kernels, flakes, or manufactured shapes made from oats, barley, rye, wheat, and others; for

snacks. Cold Cereal has been a part of our daily lives forever!

Check the Label: The first ingredient should be a grain. Often sweeteners are added: sugar, corn syrup, corn syrup solids, high fructose corn syrup, honey, maple syrup, molasses, or rice syrup; but should not be the first ingredient. Check nutrition panel for fiber. The Food and Drug Administration says that it takes 3 grams of soluble fiber a day to actually lower cholesterol.

More Varieties: Corn, oat, rye, rice or wheat flakes or particular weaves, shapes, or may be puffed. Nuggets of mixed grains may have added ingredients such as dried fruit and nuts which adds to the calories.

Not just for breakfast: For a meal or as a snack or crushed to replace bread crumbs in recipes. Add fresh fruit for more fiber or low-fat milk or yogurt for more protein.

Shelf life: Store opened packages in Ziploc type plastic bags or tightly sealed in glass or ceramic containers to insure freshness as grains will absorb moisture in the air. Store in cool, dark area.

Health Benefits: Whole grains provide fiber and nutrients. Enriched cereals may include 15-20 vitamins and minerals. For gluten-free diets, opt for corn or rice cereals or those specifically marked gluten free.

Kraft Foods (Stock Quote: KFT) surprised everyone recently by announcing it would split into two separate companies, one of which will focus solely on putting out grocery products like macaroni and cheese and Maxwell House coffee domestically while the other would push snack items like Oreos and Cadbury to markets outside the U.S. Consumers reading this may wonder if the restructuring will have any impact on the Kraft products they see on supermarket shelves, but according to food industry experts, the short answer is no. So valued readers, out Oreos are safe. GOT MILK?

Kennebec Potato The Kennebec is a large potato, and it looks very pretty with its

light tan skin, nice uniform appearance (it usually doesn't have large 'holes' like many other potatoes), and attractive white fleshy insides. The skin is thin so it peels quickly (and is fine to use even unpeeled), and it's a nice oval potato so it is more attractive on the plate than some other irregularly-shaped ones. It is an easily-grown main crop potato, the plant has a high and dependable yield of large potatoes, it resists blight and other diseases well, and the potatoes winter very well for a long storage time. In-N-Out uses the Kennebec variety of potato for its fries and prepares them in store as opposed to purchasing them pre-made from other companies
