FOCUS GROUP

We began our research into our chosen demographic with a focus group. Which allowed us to have an insight into what our audience found intriguing and enticed them, and what they found to be dull and unattractive. Which in full, allowed us to have a full insight into our audience’s response to our the narrative and performance aspects of our piece.

QUESTION 1

We asked our focus group ‘What was your favourite part of the video?’

Findings:

Constant transition between the performance and the narrative

The portrayal of relationship change i.e. mirror shot

Again, how portrayal of the past is shown, where the protagonist is portrayed reminiscing the past throughout.

QUESTION 2

We asked our focus group ‘In what ways do you feel that our video could have been improved?’

Findings:

The way in which the bench shot didn’t look professional in that not enough people were shown walking past the protagonist

The lighting in some of the shots was dark and not bright enough i.e. bus stop shot

The length of some of the shots could have been shortened, due to some shots making it seem too long and repetitive.

QUESTION 3

We asked our focus group ‘In what ways did the video appeal to you i.e. target audience?’

Findings:

‘The videos choice of having characters of our age group really appealed to me’

‘The setting is somewhere that I know, and it appealed to me due to this factor’

QUESTION 4

We asked our focus group ‘What certain edits did you find interesting, and did you find them effective?’

Findings:

The shot shown at the very end of the photo falling, the blurry background made the ending very effective

‘I enjoyed the bench shot, because it emphasised how long he was sat there for and also portrayed his sadness.’

They enjoyed the shot at the coffee shop, because it easily portrayed the protagonists state of mind i.e. reminiscing about their past love’

They also found the editing effect of the fade to white between our sequence of photos, thus portraying a photo booth.

QUESTION 5

We asked our focus group ‘Does our video fit in the conventions of our chosen genre?’

Findings:

The way in which the videos tempo was slow and the mood was calm due to the dull colours used throughout, and these factors helped to reflect the genre well.

The dark colours used portray the chosen genre, and also portray how emotion the video and song is.

It is in a middle class mis-en-scene, so can relate to a lot of people.

QUESTION 6

We asked our focus group to rate our production out of ten, in order to gain a simple but worthy data collection.

Findings:

- We received 9 out of 10, 9 out of 10, 9 out of 10, and a 10 out of 10. Reasons for the decisions are below.

- ‘The video didn’t have many mistakes and the editing was on point’ i.e. of a high standard.

- ‘I really enjoyed the video due to how well made it is’

RESEARCH INTO OUR TARGET AUDIENCE

Our Chosen demographics' age range would be 11-17, so in order to collect the most reliable and accurate data, I decided to use social media as the pinnacle institution for my data. Reasons for this choice is as follows:

Page 11: What Have You Learnt From Your Audience Feedback1

SOCIAL MEDIA

Due to researching into social media’s demographic age ranges. I found that throughout the social media institutions, the youngest age range was the predominant group. Even though within my second findings i.e. piece b, the youngest age group was minimal in growth, the social media site Facebook was the most frequently used institution by their demographic, and due to this, I decided to research my audience on this site.

SOCIAL MEDIA RESEARCH

When choosing Facebook as our selective research convention, the way in which we would collect data had to be discussed. I carried out my research by asking my mutual friends on the social media site to watch the video and to comment on the post what their interpretations and opinions (be that positive or negative) were.

POSITIVES MENTIONED FREQUENTLY

One concept our demographic found very interesting and widely attractive was the way in which we combined two time periods in a simple presentation. Examples of this are below:

POSITIVES MENTIONED FREQUENTLY

One positive feedback I received numerous times in my data collection, was how we portrayed our complex and unique narrative. Examples of this positive feedback is below:

POSITIVES MENTIONED FREQUENTLY

The last frequently mentioned positive feedback I received was about the editing within our piece. In how it made it look professional and accurately presented our narrative. Examples of how we used editing to our advantage is below:

FREQUENT CRITICISMS

We found that a frequent criticism of our piece was that the shots of our shown Artist lacked in variety, in that it was mainly one plain shot of the Artist. Examples of these criticisms are shown below:

Page 18: What Have You Learnt From Your Audience Feedback1

FREQUENT CRITICISMS

Another frequent criticism was that of the shot of our Protagonist on the bench, where the speed and duration were increased. And audience members also stated that within that shot it lacked in shot variation, due to it being a still shot throughout. This proved to me that whilst the shot did look effective, if some peers criticise it, this may mean that it must be of a high standard in order to look achieved. Examples of these criticisms are below:

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISMS

I received plenty of constructive criticisms about my piece, and this allowed our group to have an insight into what went well and didn’t bode well with our demographic and in our piece as a whole. Examples of these are shown below:

WHAT HAVE I LEARNT?

Through the constant mention of editing within our negative feedback, I now know that our variety of camera angles in the narrative and of the performance was very minimal in complexity. And now I have learnt that our chosen demographic are interested in a variety of shots – whether the genre is slow or fast – and in the near future I will use a wide variety of shots in my production.

Another factor I will improve on is the smoothness/accuracy of the shots. In that in the bus shot and bench shot with high speed duration, they were both criticised in the feedback due to them standing out as not as professional as the rest of the production. I have learnt that in the next production, I will make sure that shots are accurate and clear, and will take time in making sure they are the best they can be, and that the audience members will relish in a production full in professionalism.
