What is an “APP”?

  • What is an “APP”?

  • The term “app” is short for the word “application”. An application is a program or a set of programs created to significantly improve existing functions of device, or providing this device with new extremely useful (or, sometimes - stupid) functions. Some apps may let you use your device in absolutely new way - for example, Dragon Dictation for iPad transforms you voice into the text.

  • For the most part APPs are mainly thought of as software programs for smartphones and tablets. For purpose of this presentation we are going to look at APPs for computers.

  • Sticky Notes

    For does that have worked in an office environment you are probably familiar with post it notes. Sticky notes are the equivalent for the PC and comes pre-installed on Vista and Windows 7.

  • You can find Sticky Notes by clicking on “Start”, “All Programs”, “Accessories” and then “Sticky Notes”. There is a version for the MAC called, Stick ‘Em Up, that can be downloaded at:

  • A box like above will be displayed on your desktop.

  • Click on the sticky note and type your reminder. Click and hold between the “+” and “X” to move it around the desktop.

  • Right click on the body of the note and you can change the color.

  • Click on the “+” on the top left hand side to create another note. Click on the “X” on the top right hand side to delete the desired note.

  • For XP users, there is a free download for a similar Sticky note call “Simple Sticky Notes” and can be downloaded at:

    I have not used this product.

  • Microsoft Calculator Plus This application allows you to complete many different types of conversions; it also includes all the mathematical functions offered in Microsoft Calculator.

  • When loaded what every view you last used will be displayed.

  • To change the view click on menu and select the desired view. The view displayed is “Standard”

  • Selecting the “Conversion” view will display the following:

  • This view will do various conversion. Select the “Category”, the Convert from:” and the “Convert to:”.

  • Enter the number to be converted and click on “Convert”

  • .5 areas has been converted to 21780 square feet.

  • Selecting the “Scientific” view will display the above .

  • A.F.5 Rename your files

    A.F.5 makes it easy to rename many files at the same time. Drag and drop your files from Microsoft® Windows® Explorer to the window of A.F.5, build new filenames and click Rename.

  • Click on “Add” to select the files to be renamed.

  • Select the files and click on “Open”

  • Note the file names under “New Filename”. Click on “Rename” to complete the changes.

  • The new name is determine by changing the “Type” fields. The first field in the example is ModDate. This option uses the Modified date in the files properties.

  • The second type field in the example is “String”. A dash was entered in the field below. Using “String” you can use any character or group of characters.

  • The third type field in the example is “Counter”. The numbers enter in the field below will determine the sequence number range to be used.

  • Click where the arrow is pointing for Picture In Picture (PIP).

  • Audacity • Record live audio. • Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs. • Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files. • Cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together. • Change the speed or pitch of a recording. PV and MAC versions available.

  • When loaded the screen above will be displayed.

  • Click on “Edit” and select “Preferences” to setup.

  • Convert cassette and records to MP3 files then burn them to a CD. A training DVD is available for any interested in learning more.

  • TrueCrypt

    TrueCrypt is software for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted volume (data storage device). On-the-fly encryption means that data is automatically encrypted right before it is saved and decrypted right after it is loaded, without any user intervention. No data stored on an encrypted volume can be read (decrypted) without using the correct password/keyfile(s) or correct encryption keys. Entire file system is encrypted (e.g., file names, folder names, contents of every file, free space, meta data, etc).

  • Available for both PC and MAC.

  • Click on “Help” then “User’s Guide” for a beginners tutorial.

  • To create your secured file click on “Create Volume”.

  • Leave the first option checked and click on “Next”’.

  • Enter the name of the file and the location where the file will be saved and click “Next”.

  • Leave default options and click on “Next”

  • Enter the size of the file and the measurement. The example is 10 GB. Click “Next” to continue.

  • Enter your desired password in the first field and again in the second field and click “Next”.

  • Click the “Yes” or “No” based on what size files you plan to encrypt and then click “Next”.

  • Click on “Filesystem” select your desired format. In the example “NTFS” was selected. Click on “Format”.

  • This will be displayed when formatting is completed. Click on “Next”.

  • The create file will show up in the selected directory.

  • Click on “Select File” to find your file. Then select the letter to be assigned, “N” in example. Click on “Mount”.

  • Enter your password and click “OK”.

  • Files can now be saved to the “N” drive.

  • The document “ssn.doc” has been saved on the “N” drive”.

  • When done with the drive click on” Dismount”. The file will be encrypted.
