Preamble

This document provides an overview of the most important changes in PTV Vissim 6

compared to Vissim 5.40 in handling and behavior.

A detailed description of the functionality can be found in the Vissim 6 online help.

1 Right Click Behavior

When you start Vissim 6 for the first time on your computer, you will see this dialog:

Now, you must decide what a click with the right mouse button will do in the network editor:

If you select the first option (“context menu”), a right click in a network editor will open a

context menu. In order to insert a network object directly, you need to press the Ctrl key

when right-clicking / right-dragging.

If you select the second option (“create new object”), a right-click / right-drag in a network

editor will insert a network object (as in Vissim 5.40). If you want to open a context menu in

a network editor, you need to press the Ctrl key when right-clicking.

In all other windows, a right-click opens always the context menu, independent of this

setting in the user preferences (which can be changed later through the “Edit” menu).

2 Files

Network File

The Vissim 6 network file has the extension *.inpx and uses the XML format. Old *.inp files

can be read in if they have been saved with Vissim 5.40. (Older *.inp files need to be

opened in and saved again with Vissim 5.40.)

All settings for evaluation files, including the active/passive flag, are saved in the *.inpx file.

There are no more separate configuration or filter files.

Data files for external signal controllers (including *.sig files of fixed time controllers), path

and cost files for dynamic assignment, and background images, texture and 3D model files

are still separate files, referenced by file name and path in the *.inpx file.

Layout File

The new layout file contains the graphical settings of all Vissim windows and sidebars,

including the network editors’ graphic parameters and the list layouts.

The layout file has the extension *.layx and uses the XML format. Old *.ini files are ignored.

When an *.inpx file is saved, a *.layx file with the same name prefix is automatically saved

in the same directory. This *.layx file is read in automatically, too, when the *.inpx file is

opened, so the layout of the whole user interface (window positions, graphic parameters)

looks exactly as when the *.inpx file was saved.

Automatic saving of the *.layx file can be switched off in the user preferences (menu “Edit”).

In the same menu, an additional option can be switched on to save the *.layx file when the

current network is discarded, i.e. when Vissim is closed or when a (new) *.inpx file is

opened or when File/New is selected. (This makes sure the layout of the previous network

looks the same when it is reopened as when it was closed.)

Evaluation Files

Many evaluation text files and database tables are written by Vissim 6 in the same format

as in Vissim 5.40. The result data of most aggregated evaluations is collected in result

attributes of network objects now, which are saved in an internal subdirectory (*.results\ in

the data directory, with one database file per simulation run). Usually, direct user access to

this directory should not be necessary, as all data is available in the GUI of Vissim 6 and

can be exported from there.

3 User Interface / Workspace

3.1 Sidebars

There are several new sidebars which replace toolbars and dialogs from Vissim 5.40 and

add new functionality: Network Objects, Levels, Backgrounds, Smart Map, Quick View.

Closed sidebars can be opened from the “View” menu.

3.2 Window Handling

Any number of network (editor) windows (for display of different views in the network) and

list windows can be opened from the “View” menu. (There is still no more than one network

loaded at a time!)

All windows can be made floating by dragging them out of the main window. Windows can

be docked and tabbed with each other, using the docking manager which appears when a

window is dragged. Sidebars can be docked and tabbed with each other, too, but not

tabbed with windows.

3.3 Undo / Redo

The undo function allows users to undo the last changes on any network objects (in a

network editor window, a list window or the quick view sidebar). The redo function allows

users to undo the last undo operations. The size of the undo history, i.e. the maximum

number of operations which can be undone, can be set in the user preferences. Layout

changes are not undoable.

3.4 Dialogs

There are no dialogs anymore for editing multiple objects at the same time or for selecting

objects from a list on the left side. Instead, there are list windows (see below) for all

network objects and, for most object types, single edit dialogs. The edit dialog for an object

can be opened from the network window by double-clicking the object, or by (Ctrl-)right-

clicking and selecting “Edit…” in the context menu, and from the list window by right-

clicking and selecting “Edit…”.

Time intervals for network objects (e.g. inputs, routing decisions) can only be edited in the

list window “Time Intervals”, where the relevant object type can be selected from a drop-

down list box in the toolbar.

3.5 Network Object Sidebar

In contrast to Vissim 5.40, it’s now possible to select objects of different types (even as

multiselection) in the network editor without changing the mode in the toolbar in between.

There is no special multiselection mode or label mode anymore. The display of objects of

one type can be switched on and off with one mouse click, as well as the display of labels.

In the sidebar, there are 5 controls for each network object type: visibility (icon),

selectability (lock), insert mode (name), label (“A”) und graphic parameters/preview.

If you don’t need the columns for selectability, label and/or graphic parameters you can

remove these from the sidebar through the context menu of the sidebar. In addition, you

can decide to display only the rows for network objects for vehicle or pedestrian traffic.

A click on the visibility icon switches on/off the display of the objects of this type in the

network window. Activating the selectability lock for a visible type prevents that objects of

that type can be (inadvertently) selected and changed/moved in the network window.

(Invisible objects can never be selected.) The label control (“A”) is used to switch/on off the

labels for the objects of this type in the network window.

If multiple network windows are open, all these settings affect only the last network window

which had focus.

Objects of the type selected for insert mode (through click on the name of the type,

highlighting the complete row) are always visible and selectable in all network windows

(unless their level is hidden or locked).

For routes, areas and obstacles, the subtype (static/partial/… respectively polygon/

rectangle) to be inserted is shown in parentheses and can be selected in a drop-down box

which opens after a click on the drop-down button (or a second click on the object type

name).

A click on the graphic parameters control (preview) opens a table containing all available

graphic parameters for this object type, including label attribute, label color and font size

and coloring options for the objects themselves. For links, pedestrian areas/ramps,

vehicles, and pedestrians, user-defined color schemes can be selected to display a color-

coded classification by any numeric attribute. The graphic parameters affect only the last

network window which had focus.

After a click in a different network window, the network object sidebar displays the settings

for that network window.

3.6 Network Editor Window

The toolbar of the network window has controls to access the basic graphic parameters

and the 3D graphic parameters, controls to switch between wire-frame and normal display

and between 2D and 3D, controls to select the behavior for synchronization with list and

other network windows (Auto Pan/Auto Zoom, see below) and for navigation in the network

(zoom in and out, back/forward to previous/next zoom view, pan mode, in 3D rotate mode

and flight mode, camera position and mouse sensitivity).

The current layout of a network window (i.e. all graphic parameters and the network object

sidebar settings but not the zoom view) can be saved with a user-defined name by entering

that name in the drop-down listbox “Select layout…” and pressing Enter. A previously

saved named layout can be loaded (in any network window) by selecting its name from that

drop-down listbox.

The special display modes “quick mode” (Ctrl-Q, maximum simulation speed by switching

off the display of all changing objects, i.e. vehicles and pedestrians and dynamic labels and

color schemes) and “simple network display” (Ctrl-N, display only link and area-type objects

but no objects on links and areas) affect all network windows and thus are accessible by

controls in the main toolbar.

In the network window, network objects are highlighted as soon as the mouse pointer

hovers over them, to show which object will be selected with a mouse click at that position.

In all network windows and all synchronized lists, the same objects are selected. (Even if

objects are not visible in a network window because visibility of the object type is off.)

New network objects can be added only if the insert mode is active for the respective type.

Sub-objects (spline points of links, intermediate points of routes and lines, node or area

polygon vertices) can be added and edited only if the insert mode is active for the

respective main object type.

As already described above, there are two options for the behavior upon right-click in the

network editor which can be selected in the user preferences:

A) New mode:

Right-click opens a context menu; Ctrl-right-click inserts an object directly.

B) Classic mode (as in Vissim 5):

Right-click inserts an object directly; Ctrl-right-click opens a context menu.

In any case, the context menu includes an item to insert an object of the current type (insert

mode), as well as all operations available for the selected object(s) and the current type.

Note that inserting objects that have a spatial extent (e.g. links, reduced speed areas,

pedestrian areas) through the context menu behaves differently from inserting these

objects with right-drag / Ctrl-right-drag:

Objects are directly created with a predefined size, which can be adjusted afterwards.

Especially, it is not (yet) possible to insert connectors through the context menu. This

means that you must always use (Ctrl-) right-drag to insert a connector.

Another option in the user preferences defines what happens after adding a new network

object in a network editor window:

A) The edit dialog with the data of the new object is opened if available; otherwise a list

window with all objects of this type is shown (brought to the top or opened) and the

row of the new object is selected.

B) The edit dialog with the data of the new object is opened if available; otherwise

nothing is shown automatically.

C) The list window is shown (even if there is an edit dialog for this type).

D) Nothing is shown automatically; the attributes of the new object keep their default

values.

3.7 Levels Sidebar

Levels are network objects now, so they can be added/deleted through the context menu in

their list window (not in the sidebar). In addition to the construction elements of the

pedestrian simulation (areas, ramps, obstacles), links, backgrounds, static 3D models and

3D signals have a level now as well.

In the levels sidebar, for each level, the display of static objects on that level can switched

on/off (visible/invisible), selection of objects on that level in the network editor can be

switched on/off, and the display of vehicles and pedestrians on that level can be switched

on/off independently. All these settings affect only the last network window which had

focus.

3.8 Backgrounds Sidebar

Background images are normal network objects now. They can be added by (Ctrl-)right-

clicking or -dragging in a network window if their insert mode is active (“Background

Images” selected in the network object sidebar). Background images can be moved, scaled

or deleted in any insert mode (provided neither their level nor the whole type is locked).

When you open an *.inp file written by Vissim 5.40, there are no background images in the

network (background images mentioned in *.ini files are not added automatically). All

background images must be inserted in the network editor. When a background image is

inserted, the associated scaling file (*.bgr or *.hgr) from Vissim 5.40 is read together with

the image file, so the position and size should be correct. For background objects already

defined in a Vissim 6 network, these scaling files are not used anymore.

The display of each background image can be switched on/off in the backgrounds sidebar.

These settings affect only the last network window which had focus.

3.9 Smart Map Sidebar

This sidebar shows the location of the current network sections of all open network

windows with 2D view, one yellow rectangle for each such network window (the last active

network window is marked with a thicker line). A section can be moved by dragging it with

the mouse, replaced by a new section with Ctrl-left-drag, and a new network window can

be opened with Ctrl-right-drag. A right-click opens the context menu which includes the

option to apply the graphic parameters from the last network window which had focus to

the smart map network display.

3.10 Quick View Sidebar

This sidebar shows the values of a user-selected subset of all attributes of the network

object(s) in the current global selection (in the network windows and synchronized list

windows). The attributes to be displayed and the formatting can be selected by the user in

the attribute selection dialog which can be accessed through the wrench icon in the

sidebar.

If multiple objects of different types are selected, no attributes are shown yet. For multiple

objects of the same type, an attribute value is shown as * (asterisk) if the values differ

between selected objects, otherwise the common value for all selected objects is shown.

Attribute values can be edited in the quick view sidebar, too. If multiple objects (all from the

same type) are selected, the new value is applied to all selected objects.

3.11 List Windows

List windows can be opened from the menu (under “Lists” for all network object types or

under “Base Data”, “Traffic”, “Signal Control”, “Evaluation” and “Presentation” for the

respective subsets) or from the context menu of the network object sidebar (right-click in

the desired row) or from the context menu in a network window (“Show in List”).

The content of a list can be sorted by any column (A..Z buttons in the toolbar), and the

complete list can be exported into a database or into a semicolon-separated text file (*.att).

Arbitrary selections can be copied and pasted to/from the clipboard, i.e. to/from other

applications like Excel.

A list window shows all network objects of one type, one row per object, with one column

per attribute. The attributes to be displayed and the formatting can be selected by the user

in the attribute selection dialog, which can be accessed through the wrench icon in the list

window toolbar.

Result attributes in lists

Several network objects have result attributes. The values of these attributes are collected

during simulation runs. Result attributes can have up to three sub-attributes: Simulation run

number, time interval index and vehicle class or pedestrian class. For the sub-attribute

simulation run number, there are additional special values “current run”, “average of all

runs”, “standard deviation between runs”, “minimum of all runs”, “maximum of all runs”. For

the sub-attribute time interval, there are the special values “last completed interval”, “total

of all intervals”, “average of all intervals”, “standard deviation of all intervals”, “minimum of

all intervals” and “maximum of all intervals”.

In a normal list window, one column can display the value of one result attribute for one

specific combination of sub-attribute values, e.g. the average travel time in simulation run

number 4, time interval 300-600, for vehicle class “light trucks”. To display results in a

different scheme, there is an alternative concept called “Result Lists” (see below).

As the definition of a list layout with attributes with sub-attributes can be cumbersome

(because there can be many time intervals and many simulation runs), there is a filter

dialog available to support the user in selecting the desired sub-attributes. Here, the user

can select which simulation runs (or aggregates of simulation runs), which time intervals (or

aggregates of time intervals), and which vehicle/pedestrian classes are available for

selection to be displayed in the list.

Synchronized Lists

Through the synchronization button in the toolbar, a list window can be synchronized with

the global selection. If the synchronization is active, any click in the list window changes the

global selection, i.e. a simple click deselects all previously selected objects and selects

only the new object, and Ctrl-click adds the new object to the global (multi-)selection. The

new global selection is visible in all network windows (as far as these objects are visible

there) and in all synchronized list windows. Depending on the state of the synchronization

toolbar buttons in the network window, the view is automatically panned (“Auto pan”) or

panned and zoomed (“Auto zoom”) to the new global selection.

Vice versa, any click in a network editor which changes the global selection changes the

selection in all synchronized list windows to the globally selected objects of that type and

scrolls in the list windows so that the first selected object is visible.

Coupled Lists

If an object type has relations to other object types (e.g. a routing decision to routes), one

of these relations can be displayed adjacent to the main list (selectable in a drop-down

listbox in the list window toolbar). In this coupled list, all objects are displayed which are

referenced from the selected objects in the main list, e.g. all routes which belong to one of

the routing decisions which are selected in the main list.

The attributes displayed in a coupled list can be selected by the user separately through

the attribute selection dialog (wrench icon). Synchronization with the global selection can

be activated for the coupled list, too (which deactivates the synchronization of the main list

automatically and vice versa).

Coupled lists are most useful for the access to child objects of main objects, e.g. lanes and

signal groups. In some cases, there are direct list windows for child objects available from

the menu “Lists”.

Result Lists

In a result list which can be opened from the “Lists” menu, there is automatically one row

per combination of network object and simulation run number and time interval, i.e. only the

vehicle/pedestrian class is shown as sub-attribute in the columns. Additional rows for

average, standard deviation, minimum and maximum of all simulation runs and/or all time

intervals can be switched on/off in the result list window toolbar (through the “Sigma” icon

buttons).

List Export

In the list window toolbars there are buttons for export to a semicolon-separated text file

(*.att for “attribute file”) or to a database table. The complete content of the list window is

exported to the respective file, using the current layout (displayed decimals and units). In

addition, there is a button (disk with arrow) for “Autosave after simulation”. If this is

activated, the list is exported automatically at the end of each simulation run.

4 Simulation

Settings

Basic settings of the vehicle and pedestrian behavior are found under Base Data / Network

Settings now. Default units (metric/imperial) for the display of values can be selected there

as well.

A multi-run simulation is started exactly like a single continuous simulation now, with the

respective settings for number of runs etc. in the simulation parameters.

The evaluations output directory is used for single simulations, too.

Inputs

Vehicle and Pedestrian Inputs which can not be completed in the assigned time interval are

now extended into the next time interval (if there is one). The remaining latent demand is

added to the demand of that next interval and uses the traffic composition of that interval.

Simulation speed in 2D

The problem of Vissim 5.40 with the Aero desktop themes on Windows 7 does not affect

Vissim 6. The 2D visualization is not slowed down by Aero desktop themes anymore.

In very small networks, especially with many standing vehicles, the 2D visualization in

Vissim 6 can be quite a bit slower than in Vissim 5.40. The same applies to bigger

networks if only a very small section is visible in a network window. In Vissim 6, the 2D

visualization of big networks and big sections is much faster but it doesn’t get faster if you

zoom in or if many vehicles are standing.

Simulation speed in 3D

The speed of the 3D visualization is still determined by the graphics card and the graphics

driver. If the 3D visualization is abnormally slow on a Nvidia GeForce card from the series

400 to 700, it is recommended to switch off the option “Double sided lighting” under User

Preferences / Graphics.

If Vissim 6 crashes during startup while the splash screen is still visible, this is usually

caused by a bug in the graphics driver, typically on notebooks with integrated processor

graphics (Intel HD) and no dedicated graphics card. Please update your graphics driver if

there is a more recent version available on the website of the manufacturer. If this doesn’t

help, you can start the program VDiagGUI.exe from the Exe folder of your Vissim

installation, click the button DISABLE 3D, close VDiagGUI, and start Vissim again. Usually,

this prevents the crash (but the 3D mode is disabled).

5 Evaluations

There are two types of evaluations: Direct output and result attributes.

Direct output evaluations

These are written directly into a text file or a database as in Vissim 5.40, either

continuously during the simulation run (raw data) or at the end of the simulation run

(several special evaluations). Direct output evaluations can be activated under Evaluation /

Configuration / Direct Output, and their parameters can be set there as well.

Result attributes

These are specific attributes of network objects which usually contain aggregated values.

The values can be shown anywhere where static attributes can be shown (list window,

quick view sidebar, label text in the network window, color from a color scheme) and

additionally in result list windows (see above).

Collection of result attributes data for a network object type in subsequent simulation runs

can be activated under Evaluation / Configuration / Result Attributes. Parameters for these

evaluations can be set there as well. Result attribute values are determined only if “collect

data” for an evaluation is active before a simulation run.

If results are to be collected separately for specific vehicle classes and/or pedestrian

classes (in addition to the virtual classes “all vehicle types” and “all pedestrian types” which

are always collected), the desired classes need to be selected in the list boxes in this

configuration dialog.

Result attribute data from previous simulation runs is deleted if either the respective

simulation run is deleted from the simulation run list window or if the evaluation

configuration option “Overwrite all previous results” is active (in this case all old results are

deleted at the start of a simulation run). If “Keep results from previous simulation runs” is

selected instead, there is an additional option to add columns for results of the previous run

to list windows automatically at the start of each simulation run. Each column with sub-

attribute “current simulation run” gets the number of the previous run instead, and a new

column for “current run” is added for each of these columns.

Result data is deleted also if objects of the respective type are added, deleted or edited or

if the configuration of the evaluation is changed (e.g. the time interval length). If only other

objects are modified, e.g. signal control or demand data, result data from previous runs

(e.g. travel times) is still available. In this case, result data from different scenarios can be

collected in one network file (respectively the associated *.results directory) and checked

and visualized in Vissim, exactly as multiple runs with different random seeds.

6 Data Model

2D/3D Models

A 2D/3D model distribution contains references to one or more 2D/3D models, each one

with a relative share. Each 2D/3D model contains a list of 2D/3D model segments with

geometry data and (optional) model file references. (This allows the same combination of

model segments, e.g. the segments of an articulated tram, to be used in multiple model

distributions more easily.)

AVI Recording

Each “camera position” (new object type) contains a certain 3D view. The current view in a

network window in 3D mode can be saved as a camera position by entering a new name in

the drop-down list “Select Camera Position…” in the network window toolbar. The view can

be set to an existing camera position by selecting that camera position’s name in the drop-

down list.

The new object type “storyboard” can contain multiple keyframes, each one referring to one

camera position. There can be multiple storyboards. When “AVI Recording” (in the

Presentation menu) is active during a simulation run, one AVI file is created for each

storyboard with the active flag “RecToAVI”.

Vehicle Occupancy

The occupancy of a vehicle type is defined as a reference to an occupancy distribution

(new type of distribution, can be an empirical or normal distribution) – not a simple double

value as in 5.40.

Each vehicle of a vehicle type gets an independent random value from this distribution,

rounded to the nearest integer. (Non-integer occupancy values defined in old *.inp files are

converted to distributions, keeping the same probabilities for upper and lower value.)

Vehicle Width

The vehicle width is not an input attribute of a vehicle type anymore, but (as the vehicle

length) an attribute of a 2D/3D vehicle model calculated as maximum width of its 2D/3D

model segments, so vehicles from the same vehicle type can have different widths. When

an old *.inp file is opened, each 2D/3D model is assigned the user-defined width of the first

vehicle type that uses this model. If this is not equal to the width of the 3D model of the

*.v3d model file, there is a message about the geometry not matching when the *.inp or

*.inpx file is loaded, with an option to use the widths of the *.v3d model files.

Pedestrian Behavior

The maximum acceleration function (per pedestrian type) has been removed. All behavior

parameters are now available inside the GUI. Global parameters can be accessed via Base

Data / Network Settings / Pedestrian Behavior. Parameters which can depend on the

pedestrian type and/or location are defined directly in the walking behavior objects. Each

pedestrian type references a walking behavior. An area behavior type can have any

number of elements, each one assigning a walking behavior (and a desired speed

distribution) to a pedestrian class for a specific time interval. Parameters which only affect

the movement from one pedestrian route location (start, end or intermediate point of a

pedestrian route) to the next one are defined directly as attributes of that second location

and can be edited in the pedestrian routes list window with coupled list pedestrian route

locations or in the dialog, which can be opened with a double-click on a route location point

in the pedestrian routes insert mode.

7 COM Interface

All attributes of all objects can be accessed through COM with the method AttValue of the

respective object. Read access is always possible, write access only if the attribute is not

read-only and for many attributes not during a simulation run. The COM manual has been

replaced by an introduction document (“Vissim 6 – COM.pdf”) and an HTML reference

which is part of the Vissim 6 online help (last chapter). Because of the generic data model,

the syntax for access to some objects and attributes has changed compared to Vissim

5.40.

9 Known Bugs

The most important issues presently known are these:

Block signalization does not work properly yet. (Bug IDs 7750, 7776)

Signal times table: In the default configuration of the signal times table window, no

signal groups and detectors are shown. They need to be added to the window

layout explicitly. (Bug ID 7759)

Time interval list: The original list layout of a time interval list is not restored when

loading a *.layx file. (Bug ID 7237)

Workspace layout: When adding a new tab, the window height increases. When

removing a tab from a group, the window height decreases. (Bug ID 7753)

Workspace layout: When saving and reloading a layout file, the width of the network

objects sidebar slightly diminshes. If the window sizes read from a layout file do not

match the current screen size, automatic adaptation of window sizes and positions

is still to be improved. (Bug ID 7641)

Workspace sidebars: Sidebars can be docked and tabbed to one another, but some

configurations are currently not supported. (Bug ID 7650)
