Clearing/AdjustmentChanging my mind

Last year (2013), English Universities received 558,898 applications

from students from the UK and European Union

401,540 applicants accepted through Firm, Insurance or

Clearing

There has already been a 4% increase in the number of applicants to UK universities in 2014, despite a small decline in the number of 18-year-olds in the population overall.

Current gov. policy is that HE institutions are fined £3,800 for each student recruited beyond strict targets

imposed in 2013. (Core number)

However... Changes for 2013 entry mean that universities and colleges

can openly recruit learners with ABB+ or equivalent as these

learners do not count towards the total number places given to them by the

Government (Margin number)

Firm and insurance choices

If you achieve the grades for your firm choice then you will be automatically accepted onto the course after results day and it will be expected that you attend that university.

Your insurance choice only comes into play if you haven’t got the grades for your firm choice or the course is withdrawn.

Therefore, you need to think carefully about your choices.

C 95/200 BYou can work out the UMS you need based on the previous exam series results. Whilst not 100% tolerant, it provides a strong idea of what you

need.

You’ve just received all your offers and latest assessment data puts you ‘on track’. Which would you choose as firm and insurance based on the info below?

University Entry requirements

Your opinion of the city / university

Leeds AAB Really like the city but you live in it and are quite keen to try out a new city. You were very impressed with the facilities at the uni.

Edinburgh AAA You love the city and the university. It would be your ambition to go to this university.

Northumbria BBB You like the city and the university facilities are good but you aren’t quite as keen on the city as Edinburgh and Leeds. You would still be happy to live here.

Sheffield AAB You like the city but the facilities at the university aren’t as good as Leeds and neither is the accommodation.

Hull BBC You weren’t very impressed on the Open Day and felt that the city wasn’t quite big enough for you or closer to other universities. You really aren’t keen on attending this university.

Extra

If you have received rejections from the universities you have applied to or have decided to decline any offers you were given then you are eligible for UCAS Extra.

To see courses that are eligible you visit the UCAS course search page and look for any courses that available under UCAS EXTRA. You then apply using TRACK for one course at a time. You cannot apply for your next course until you have got a reply from the previous university.

Once you have started the UCAS Extra process you cannot go back to any previous offers that you might have declined.

Working out tariff points

Some universities will give you a points offer rather than stating exact

gradese.g. 240 points rather than CCC

AS points can only be counted to your overall points score if you didn’t

continue the course into A2

Firm choice

On results day if you have met the requirements for your firm choice your

place will be confirmed by the university and you will be expected to

take the place.

You cannot decide not to take this for your insurance offer instead

Insurance choice

If you don’t meet the requirements for your firm choice but do receive the

grades for your insurance choice then this university will automatically be

upgraded to your firm choice and you will be expected to attend that

university.

Some flexibility is given to insurance offers

Accepting OffersUnconditional firm (UF) You're in!

Conditional firm (CF)

You're in if you meet the conditions.

Conditional firm (CF) and conditional insurance (CI)

You've made a first and second choice – you'll be in at the first if you meet the conditions. If not you might have met the conditions for the second – if so you'll be on that course instead.

Conditional firm (CF) and unconditional insurance(UI)

You've made a first and second choice – if you meet the conditions of the first you'll be on that course. If not you'll definitely be on the second.

Tip... If in doubt watch the UCAS relying to offers video or ask a member of the team

Adjustment

If your grades exceed the entry requirements for your firm choice

then you have 5 calendar days to research alternative courses.

You will need to register this with UCAS on their ‘Tracking’ page. Your firm

offer will be held during these 5 days.

Beware... Changes to offers

A university could offer you an alternative course, defer your entry or start you at a different point of

entry if you don’t meet the entry requirements.

Keep watching your emails and make sure personal details are correct.

Clearing

www.ucas.com has a list of all the courses available through clearing

This info will be available from 14th August

You don’t have to stick with the subject / course you originally chose

You must be available to speak to admissions tutors in person during the clearing process

i.e. think very carefully about when you go on holiday over the summer

What other information should inform my decision?

• Push Guide• Cost of Living• Applicant open days• League tables • Former students

• Speak to us!

University guide 2014: University league tables?

Guardian guide

But wait.... I have changed my mind

• If you decide that you would rather defer your place, you will need to discuss this with the universities as soon as possible. This is something that the universities themselves can change if they are able to accommodate the request.

• Students defer through Apply by choosing the appropriate start date for a future course. Students applying for deferred entry need to be aware that they will still be expected to meet entry requirements by 31 August 2014

Alternatively if you are Year 13 you have the flexibility to come back into Year 14 and reapply for

next year.....

Practical points results day

• Traditional vs. technology?• UCAS will crash at some stage... • Ring the institution for clarity (Gen

studies)• Close to a grade boundary• Worst case scenario • Holidays

• Ring your parents!

And finally...

You are not alone...Please come and see the 6th Form Team or talk to your Tutors if you have any queries

Remember... less places = Disappointment ...we DO NOT want any of

you to be included in that figure

Any Questions...?

What is your intention?

Complete the form as accurately as possible.

If you are not sure then provide your current

thinking

Write your ideas down on your paper. Work with the other people on your table.

What do you imagine you will have to do in the

first week at university?

How many of these did you write down?

• Attend Fresher’s Fair.• Sign up to a Doctor’s surgery.• Attend the Electives Fair and choose Elective modules.• Catch the bus to uni.• Find out the numbers of local taxi firms.• Buy a bus pass (if necessary).• Walk around the area surrounding your

accommodation.• Go and find your lecture theatres!• Attend the Student Union societies fair.• Spend as much time as possible in communal areas of
