What’s Happening
Hay War Memorial High School Pine Street (PO Box 266) HAY NSW 2711 T 02 69931408 F 02 69931223 E [email protected]
From The Principal On Wednesday 15 August, our School Captains acknowledged VP Day (Victory in the Pacific) and the Vietnams Veterans Day, which occurs on Saturday 18
August at the Hay Cenotaph in Lachlan Street. Remembering the people who served in the defence forces and those who were impacted by World War II and the Vietnam War is extremely important occasion for our school community. Our school motto at Hay War Memorial High School is a reminder for everyone of the sacrifices made by loved ones to ensure that we live a safe and enjoyable life and we owe them so much. The start of this week saw the well-acclaimed Australian singer and actress, Christine Anu. Christine enabled the audience to join in with the performance with groovy dance moves and fantastic singing. The 2018 NAIDOC theme was: Because of her, we can! Christine Anu concluded Hay War Memorial High School activities for NAIDOC this year. Her life story reinforced the importance women who have played - and continue to play - as active and significant role models at the community, local, state and national levels. Our school community felt it was important to share this
event and we invited students and staff from Hay Public School, St Mary’s Primary School and the broader school community to hear the music and message of Christine Anu. It was fabulous to see so many people attending and participating. Yvan Chambers Principal
School Photos Students were provided with their personalised school photo payment envelope last week. The envelope must be returned to the front office, even if payment is made online. Year group photos are taken as well as individual photos. Students are asked to wear their full school uniform, including the correct grey or brown school jumper. Students who are not in school uniform will not be in their year group photo. Hopefully, all students will be present as this is a permanent record of who is present in each year group.

VP Day and Vietnam Veterans Day Commemoration The School Captains represented the school at Wednesday’s service to commemorate both VP Day (Victory in the Pacific) and Vietnam Veterans Day, on Saturday. Eddie Jones read a short speech outlining the significance of VP Day. VP Day marks the end of hostilities in the Second World War with the surrender of Japan to the allied forces on 15 August 1945. Almost 40,000 Australian gave their lives during the war. Mikayla McCartney delivered a short address about Vietnam Veterans Day, which commemorates all Australian Vietnam Veterans and is held on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.
Hay High Ten In Colour
The Hay High Ten has been running since 1983 and has been extremely successful as a fundraiser with
many resources being purchased in all faculty areas. To reinvigorate this long running event a few changes have been made. The course will now take advantage of the walking tracks down at the river and have a colour run theme, with colour stations placed around the course. Students that are running the track competitively will have to complete three laps of the river circuit. Students can organise their own shirts or the school has purchased 100 white cotton t- shirts that will be available free of charge once cards are returned. Students have received their sponsorship cards and are encouraged to get as many sponsors as possible. Every $5 of sponsorship raised entitles the student to a raffle ticket/tickets in a random prize draw. The school is very appreciative of the many prizes local businesses donate to support this event. There will be a major prize – choice of a tablet or smartwatch. Every $100 raised entitles the student to one ticket in this major draw. All cards are encouraged to be returned to the front office prior to the run. Once you return your card you will have the choice of getting a free T- shirt (until supplies run out).
Don’t lose cards – they are legal documents and they all have to be returned prior to the run. If you lose your card a Statutory Declaration must be filled out.
Community members are welcome to participate in
the event with sponsor cards available from the front
office. The Hay High Ten in Colour will take place on
Thursday 30 August starting at 1pm Sandy Point.

Meet Our Staff
Mr Jim Mackintosh - Head Teacher - Science What are your main commitments at HWMHS? I am the head teacher of Science at HWMHS. This involves both educational leadership and classroom teaching. Together with an amazing faculty of talented and dedicated teachers, we strive to have a well running faculty producing quality lessons and assessment tasks. To do this, we work to develop our professional practice and knowledge. My other role at HWMHS is as the head teacher of Year 7. This involves working with the whole school, parents and the Learning & Support Team to support Year 7 students in their learning. I’ve found that the students at HWMHS are very talented and have great general knowledge.
What has helped you improve your learning most and why? I was really fortunate to be guided earlier on in my career by some of the top educational leaders in NSW, particularly Steven So and Daryl Currie who were my first Head Teacher and first Principal respectively. Both were major positive influences on my development as a teacher. They helped me recognize the importance of student engagement and how to help create conditions for quality teaching. I also learnt a lot from Kath McMicking, a teacher who recently retired after almost 50 years, and Mr Simon Paterson my principal at the previous school in Sydney. More recently, I’ve been learning from Mr Chambers and all the amazing teachers and staff I work with at HWMHS. In terms of educational theory, I’m interested in Formative Assessment and the ideas of Professor Dylan Wiliam. This increasingly is an influence on my teaching, or at least on how I aspire to teach.
What has been your most memorable moment so far at HWMHS? Probably my most memorable experience was taking a walking group along the river for the first time last autumn. The students at HWMHS have a keen appreciation and knowledge of the unique geology, flora and fauna of the region in which they live. The students are very happy to share their knowledge with me so it’s a real privilege.
Meet Our Students Braydan Cooper - Year 12 What is your favourite subject at HWMHS and why? My favourite subject is Hospitality as I am able to eat lots of great food. What has been your most memorable moment at HWMHS so far? My most memorable moment so far would have to be the Year 12 Swimming Carnival. Where do you see yourself in ten years? In ten years I would like to be working as an Operating Theatre Technician in Geelong.

A message from your School Counsellor – in – Training
Making mistakes is human - everyone
makes mistakes! It is what we do after we have made a mistake
that matters. It is how we repair any hurt we caused that
matters. It is how we can use our mistakes to do better
in the future that matters. If you feel like having a chat about your choices
before and after making mistakes, come to the
School Counsellor room (Monday and
Tuesday).
