When he was 10 years old he began writing plays and has since been a professional playwright for the last 15 years. After taking a leave from teaching Macdonald became a master of fine arts student, studying directing at the University of Regina. His plays have been produced locally and nationally. “My first love has been playwriting and being involved in professional theatre. I’ve learned the elements of theatre throughout the years but taking the formal training at the University will enable me to learn the elements and to specifically learn to direct in a more organized way,” says Macdonald. Macdonald’s master thesis project is based on Eurydice, a play which he is directing in February. Eurydice is about finding out where we belong and finding comfort in that – it’s about love, relationships and the memory of our family which keeps us secure, happy and comfortable as we find our place in the world. The Theatre Department runs four plays per season. Each production aims to focus on different topics of interest. Eurydice has taken an inter-disciplinary approach to its production. Students from the Department of Computer Science and from the Faculty of Engineering are involved with the technical aspects. A desire to be involved in the community is exactly what theatre has done for Macdonald. “Coming together and sharing our stories brings the community together. The audience gets to experience different emotions without having to live them themselves.” The role of director adds to Macdonald’s ability to give back. The Persephone Theatre, for example, will produce a play Macdonald co-wrote, Waking, with Dr. Martin LeBoldus high school students this spring. The play is part of their young company educational component. The Persephone Theatre will also produce a play in February that he’s written entitled, Velocity. To add to his extensive list of accomplishments, Macdonald has collaborated on numerous theatre projects with students and has acted in prominent shows such as Corner Gas and the Tommy Douglas Story. He is also a recipient of the Regina Writer’s Award, Enbridge PlayRites Award from the Alberta Theatre Projects and is a two-time recipient of the Saskatchewan Motion Picture Industry Association award for film acting. “Theatre is a collaborative process,” says Kathleen Irwin, head of the Theatre Department. “Eurydice is an example of our department reaching out to the rest of the campus community. We are combining many students who are able to use their knowledge from other faculties and apply it to a theatrical production.” Sophisticated projections and actual rain falling will be added to the usual tricks of the University Theatre’s fly gallery and trapped stage. Eurydice runs February 16-19 at the University Theatre. Tickets are $15 for adults; seniors/children $10; U of R students free with valid identification.
