Throughout 2014 and beyond

As the date marking 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War grows near, Preston Remembers is working with and for communities to make the city’s War Memorial and what it represents forever relevant to the people living, working and growing up in Preston. The project started with the restoration of Preston’s War Memorial, a fitting focus for the city’s commemorations. Over the next three years, Preston Remembers will uncover the stories of both those who served and those who lived in Preston during the First World War. From stormy seas to tranquil sunny bays and busy harbours to shipwrecks, the beauty, drama and ever-changing nature of the sea and coast has long fascinated artists. Making Waves features paintings, prints and ceramics from the Harris collection that capture the unpredictable and wild beauty of the sea and our relationship with it.

The exhibition draws on the Harris’ rich collection of marine paintings including work by Julius Olsson, Paul Nash, Maggi Hambling, Lubaina Himid and ceramic artist James Tower. who reflect on their habitual swim at the beach in Beirut. Sophie Clements’ There, After seductive film installation was developed from a discussion with a particle physicist. Samson Kambalu’s St Augustine is a performative action based on the legend of St Augustine and the Little Boy.

This is also the first showing of our recent joint acquisition, Ocean, by Natasha Daintry, which features 1,002 slip-cast porcelain pots.

Ocean was purchased through the Contemporary Art Society’s Craft Acquisition Scheme with support from the Art Fund. Co-owned by Gallery Oldham, Harris Museum & Art Gallery Preston, Touchstones Rochdale, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery Trust and Nottingham City Museums and Galleries

Behind the Scenes

Go ‘behind the scenes’ to explore how the Harris’ costume and textile collection is cared for and to celebrate all the people who help – from local volunteers and students to researchers from far and wide.

It’s a great chance to see the variety of treasures we look after in the museum stores, from elegant ball gowns to funky platform shoes. Find out about the work that goes on ‘behind the scenes’ and have your say on what projects the museum works on next.

Preston Remembers – 1914 to 191512 September – 31 January 2015

This exhibition explores the impact of the first two years of the First World War on Preston and is displayed alongside the Preston First World War Roll of Honour. Featuring eyewitness accounts, photographs, poetry, objects, memorials and film, it reveals some of the remarkable stories of the men of the regular forces, reserves and volunteers who first answered the call to arms.

Marian Clayden: A Dyer’s Journey through Art and Fashion 27 September – 29 November

From dyeing fabrics for costumes and hangings for touring productions of the musical Hair in 1970, to producing an atelier collection of hand-dyed garments and accessories under her own label from 1981-2005, this exhibition showcases Preston-born Marian Clayden’s unique and luxurious designs.

Access Blue Badge parking is in Jacson Street. We have level or lift access to the first and second floors and an accessible toilet. We welcome guide and assistance dogs. An induction loop is fitted throughout the galleries. Audio guides are available on the second floor, or from any member of staff.

Bring your family Baby-changing facilities are available. As well as regular family workshops (see harrismuseum.org.uk or pick up a leaflet for details) you can find trails, Annie’s Arty bags, babies’ treasure baskets and other family activities available throughout the day in the galleries.
