PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Cory

Spring has Sprung! One of my favorite times of the year; the fl owers are starting to bloom, the birds are chirping, and it’s almost festival season!

In April, we will see a new festival in town - The Mission Street Food Fest will happen in downtown Mission on April 18th. Presented in part by the Mission Downtown Business Association and the Fraser Valley Food Truck Association, this exciting new event will bring over 20 food trucks, live music, and fun family activities, followed by a wrap up party at The Stage at the Bellevue. Bring on the food trucks!

One of Mission’s premier events is on April 25th - The Mission Hospice Society 10KT Golden Gala at Rockwell’s Banquet Centre will be one of the most glamourous events in Mission this year. Complete with diamonds and spectacular auction items, the annual hospice gala is not to be missed. This event will sell out as it does every year. Contact Angel at [email protected] for tickets or to support this very worthwhile cause.

A couple months ago it occurred to me that we were not doing much to promote events that happen after dark - in other words,

where is the night life?! So, in this issue, we have started our new What’s On! Mission After Dark section that lists venues that host events in the evening. If you know of venues or events that promote night life in Mission, email us at [email protected].

Happy Spring Mission! Here’s hoping you all get out and enjoy Mission’s natural beauty.

Cheers,

Cory with What’s On! Mission at The Stage at the Bellevue

Why would you get your vehicle serviced at a dealership? There are many places these days to get your vehicle serviced and repaired. It seems like there is some sort of repair shop on every corner, from franchise shops to private “mom & pop garages”. Some are good, some unfortunately aren’t as good – some are honest, and some… well you know. Some people choose their repair shop based solely on price – which is great to save a dollar or two, but in the long run, is it really saving you money? There is a perception that dealerships are way more expensive that private shops but… are they really? For every vehicle we service, we check for and perform any safety recalls that your vehicle may have – saving you time and keeping your vehicle and family safe.

Chrysler products. There are constant new courses that keep them up to date on all the current models and designs making them experts on all Chrysler and Jeep models. Would you rather have a factory trained Chrysler technician working on

Just saying…

We perform a multipoint inspection on every vehicle we service, and inform our customers on and repairs that may be required and we NEVER perform unauthorized work – whether it is under warranty or not. We offer a ONE year parts and labor warranty on all our OEM parts giving you peace of mind motoring. We have the latest computer systems and information from Chrysler on all the newer and older vehicles – from certain repairs, to

We wash and vacuum every vehicle we service so your vehicle will look as good as it runs. We have a free shuttle service and luxury loaner vehicle available by appointment allowing you to keep your day going. We also have a comfortable waiting area with TV, internet, WIFI and free coffee for you while you wait. So, really, is Pioneer more expensive in the long run than the private shops?

The Future of Job Demand in the Region

Keeping in touch with the business of MissionKeeping in touch with the business of Mission, BC, Canada

At the end of January a labour market research study was completed on behalf of the Invest North Fraser partnership of Mission, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The topic may sound a little a little dry, but the future employment needs of the 489 employers surveyed was rich with insight.

The research included analysis of human resource issues

tourism, manufacturing, education, advanced technology), as well as an assessment of labour supply and demand, recruitment and retention issues and training needs.

included the following:

LATE WINTER PRUNING GUIDEThere is really is nothing like a properly trimmed bush

It’s not too lateDid you know that 90 percent of deciduous (leafy) plants can be pruned in winter? Even though we are getting close to spring, there is still time to complete your pre-bloom garden maintenance.

Why Prune? In addition to prolonging the lifespan of a plant, pruning enhances the plant’s beauty and prevents the crowding of other plants.

What to prune - Dead, dying, or diseased branches.- Branches that are obstructing walk/driveways or are

crowding other plants.- Where you see two branches crossing, prune off the

smaller one.

Tools of the Trade

By-pass Shears and Loppers- These pruners use a scissor like motion and are best

used on live branches. Use shears for cuts up to ½” and loppers for cuts up to 1 ½”.

Anvil Shears and Loppers- Using a single blade that cuts against a soft metal surface,

anvils are best used on dead branches that can damage by-pass pruners. Use shears for cuts up to to ½” and loppers for cuts up to 2”.

- NOTE: Avoid using anvil pruners on life branches as they can crush the cut ends and prevent the plant from properly healing.

Folding Saw- For branches that are too big for a lopper, a folding saw

is a very handy tool. It can also be used for cutting longer branches into more manageable pieces.

Pole-Pruner/Saw- It is risky, awkward and time consuming to prune

out of reach branches from a ladder. It’s best to use a telescoping pole-pruner or pole-saw so you can stay safely on the ground, just be weary not to stand in the fall path of the branch.

Chainsaws and Reciprocating Saws- Use these tool for fast cutting of branches larger than 3”

in diameter.- NOTE: Use extreme caution and wear proper protective

clothing and equipment when use motorized cutting tools.

Pro Tips - Prune branches at an angle that mirrors the branch collar

(the furrow of bark where branch and trunk meet). - Don’t leave stubs behind as this will encourage insects

and disease to move in and attack healthy tissue.- Cut large branches in three parts. First, cut off about one-

third of the branch to reduce the weight. Holding up a heavy branch while you prune it off the trunk will break your back and your saw, and tear the trunk’s bark. Next, undercut the remaining stub so the trunk bark won’t rip

top, beside (but not cutting into) the branch collar.- Don’t prune when the plant is wet as this can spread

disease. Also, when pruning diseased wood, cut several inches below the diseased section.

- Although not as critically important as during the growing season, cleaning tools with a 10 percent solution of rubbing alcohol and water (approximately 2 tablespoons of alcohol to 1 cup of water) helps prevent the spread of disease from cut to cut as you prune.

- Don’t prune your trees straight across the top. This is called scalping and is the pruning equivalent of a terrible haircut. Be sure to follow the natural shape of the tree.

Water never quenched my thirst, and I didn't drink enough throughout the day. One day a friend had me try this water called Dolphin water. OMG, the first glass had me wanting more. We ran out of the Dolphin water and drank tap water for a couple of days, and noticed how much we missed the Dolphin water. Our white standard poodle has the red staining on his fur from his saliva. We put him on the Dolphin

water and the PH level in the dog has been balanced and the red staining has almost disappeared. Both dogs actually drink more Dolphin water than tap water, as their water intake of tap water wasn't much throughout the day. My partner and I also use a C Pap (breathing) machine every night, and our water reservoirs were looking nasty inside with using tap water, and also using distilled water. We put the Dolphin water in and it actually lifted the crud off the walls and base of our reservoirs, and it is so clean every day. We also noticed how awake we are in the mornings, compared to before. The psoriasis on my leg has stopped itching, now feeling smooth, and redness almost gone. All these wonderful changes has happened over a 3 month period. We couldn't be happier.

Thank you Dolf for sharing this water with all of us that use it. Jacqueline B.

EARTHTACULARROCKS AND GEMS

Find us on Facebook

Hello. My name is Wyatt Scott and it’s my pleasure to introduce you to Earthtacular Rock and Gem. We are a family owned and operated lapidary shop located at 33128 First Ave, Mission. Lapidary is just a fancy way to say rock shop! Lapidary can also mean a cutter, polisher or engraver of precious stones; you get the idea. Basically, we love rocks and I use the word rocks loosely. It includes gemstones, fossils, geodes, carvings, landscape, tumbled, etc.

There are so many different things made from stone and different elements that come from the ground. At

advancements and technologies come from a rock. For example; do you have a car? Well, at one time it used to be a rock!

Stones can also have symbolism and meanings behind them and can be traced back through history. They have been written about in books since the dawn of time and adorned by kings and queens. They have also been used as currency!

bring something unique to their positions. We believe every person is inherently born an artist and we look for that

and draw it out from within them. We are so fortunate to have these amazing employees who truly are, our business’ greatest asset. Our artisans create so many

elaborate jewelry, large landscape and other custom stone projects.

Mission is such an eclectic community and as such is full of amazing artisans around every corner. These are some of the people who help make Mission such an incredible place. At Earthtacular we encourage and support the arts through many local artists. Stop by and check out some of the remarkable artwork from local indigenous artists in the store.

As well as our retail location on First Avenue, we also manufacture from our small workshop. We have a very unique line of orgonite, orgone generators and one of a kind, custom stone lazy susans. Some of the stone projects we work on can take hundreds of hours to create. We also offer high quality Canadian manufactured wholesale products made right here in Mission. To round out our operations we attend about

150 different venues annually as well as having an online sales presence.

Hope to see you soon! - Wyatt

IT IS BETTER TO BUILD BOYS THAN TO MEND MEN!GET BOY SMART!

Parents everywhere express their concern as boys arrive home from school with negative attitudes toward school learning. They recognize their boys’ capacity to learn and create,

struggle with how to motivate boys. Now what to do about it?

On April 20th the Mission Daycare Society and Heritage Park Child Care Centre is sponsoring the BC celebrated author and educator Barry MacDonald to help parents meet the challenges of parenting boys for success at school – and life. Drawing on studies from cultural and biological-based understandings of how children grow and develop, the author of the best-selling books Boy Smarts and Boys on Target: Raising Boys into Men of Courage and Compassion, and founder of the MentoringBoys.com website, will help parents, teachers, and care-givers to understand how gender patterns

boys to navigate and overcome cultural pressures to become men of courage and compassion.

MacDonald’s message about helping boys’ school achievement recently struck the right chord with Canadian school leaders, including Dr. Avis Glaze, Ontario’s Education Commissioner and Senior Advisor to the Minister of Education, who remarked, “Barry MacDonald’s compelling presentation is one of the best I have ever seen. His keynote address at the National Principals’ Conference was balanced, insightful and presented with perspicacity. He offers a framework and an array of strategies that will indeed make a tremendous difference in the lives of boys struggling at school. Barry is an outstanding speaker who wisely knows the place of atonement and humour, and indeed should be heard by every educator and parent.”

With creativity and humour MacDonald packs the house to hear his passionate message about the varied needs of boys as he weaves together new gender understandings into an optimistic framework that shows us all how to bring out the best in boys and guide them to become courageous, caring, and ethical men.

Boys and girls approach life with differing needs, differing abilities and differing goals. The fact that each child is unique and complex should not blind us to the reality that gender is one of the great organizing principles in child development.

The challenges of raising boys have become increasingly hard to ignore.

HOPE CENTRALIf you are familiar with Mission you likely don’t need to be convinced that Mission has a problem; ‘a very visible demographic of disenfranchised, poor and marginalized people in our downtown.’ What is interesting, is the dialogue around what part of that phrase expresses the problem. Are we more concerned with the hurting people in our community or are we angered by the optics of it? Hope Central aims to invite the wider community to work in partnerships that address both.

HISTORY Approximately 14 years ago people from New Heights Church saw a need in the community and rallied to meet it. With wagons loaded with hot soup and sandwiches, they walked the downtown streets and alleys on Sunday nights offering food to people who were without.

From this simple beginning Hope Central has grown into a consistent presence in Mission’s downtown. Serving a simple breakfast six mornings a week and three hot, healthy suppers, the service of Hope Central greets people with desperate needs at the dinner table and invites them into drop-in programs where the underlying causes of their situations can be addressed.

Over time, New Heights became increasingly aware of the growing complexity of the social issues in our downtown corridor. This awareness convinced the group to change from only trying to address hunger, to forming partnerships that would multiply effectiveness and reduce the overlap of services. Hope Central serves as a hub where the credibility that has come through years of relationship building can be augmented with other various services available in Mission to address complex individual problems.

VISIONHope Central’s only employee, Carrie Prentice coordinates this growing group of volunteers from churches, charities, businesses and individuals

facing poverty. Beyond food, the programs at Hope Central are aimed at creating positive movement with any person facing physical, spiritual, social or psychological poverty. By building relationships at meal times, people begin to feel secure in accessing other available programs and networks that will help them, when they are ready, move towards greater health.

The team of helpers believe that alleviating poverty requires a holistic approach that acknowledges that all people experience some level of poverty and that solutions are complex, long term and earned at a price. It is not unusual

ways they wouldn’t have predicted. Volunteers eventually realize that many believe myths about homelessness and that they are not all that

relationships are formed and barriers are broken down, our community’s goal is to move from an “us” and “them” mentality toward a place where everyone is a valued part of the community.

With the tireless work of a growing number of volunteers Hope Central is making an impact. The invaluable support of other groups and especially the United Way, and Mission District Foundation also make this collaboration at Hope Central possible.

Addressing a Downtown Problem

HOW YOU CAN HELPFor many, how to help with the social issues that are faced regularly on our main streets is overwhelming. However, there are simple things that can be done to contribute to a healthier community.

1. Spend time downtown. A commitment to shop and participate in the life of our downtown community can bring more positive activity into this area. Don’t perpetuate the myth that our streets are dangerous or scandalous. Support downtown business and initiatives.

comfort zone. Talk to a person sitting on the side-walk. Come to a meal at Hope Central and sit at the table with an openness to learn by listening to people’s stories. Bring a team to serve a meal or be a regular volunteer for drop-in, breakfasts or suppers.

3. Point people toward appropriate channels. When approached by a person in need respond by pointing them toward a place that can help them long-term. Familiarize yourself with the great resources offered in our community so that you can make educated suggestions. Learn

about places like Community Services, Mission Mental Health, Food Banks, Mission Friendship Centre, Haven in the Hollow, Hope Central, Grace Station, Women’s Resource Society, etc.

4. Offer your unique ability to assist. How could you help? Could you volunteer? Do you have a particular skill that could enhance a drop-in time? Do you have food resources or money to offer? Find ways to be a meaningful part of the solution.

As Mission continues to be known for volunteerism and community spirit, believe with us that there are solutions to addressing diffi cult problems by working together.

Join the movement of embracing every individual as a critical part of what makes up a community and ask yourself, “How do you defi ne the problem downtown?”

I LOVE Mission….Make a Connection!

Commission members spent several sessions sitting around a table with artists, teachers, authors, dancers, writers and involved community members to talk about Mission. It was invigorating and instructive, and despite the vastly varied experiences in our community, everyone agreed on one area of concern-connections!

Following the meetings, the Commission is moving ahead to try and establish a Neighborhood Program to bring communities together. Stay tuned for details on how you can host a neighborhood event this summer! A chance to meet your neighbors and build some connections in your community!Check out our webpage at www.missionculturalresources.ca.

Stay involved with the Cultural community by checking us out on Facebook and our web page.

Other projects on the horizon for the Commission in 2015 include a review of the Mission Cultural Plan Culture Days celebrations, and the public art inventory.

The Cultural Resources Commission meets the third Tuesday of every month at the Leisure Centre – the public are welcome to attend. Call Stephanie Key at Parks, Recreation and Culture at 604-820-5357 for further information.

Here is what the Rotary Club of Mission Mid-day is doing in the community...

Blessings in a Backpack is a unique results-oriented program designed to feed elementary school

children who may not have any or enough food on the weekends. Blessings was founded in the U.S. in 2003 to meet the needs of underprivileged children who are fed through government programs at school during the week, and have no food to eat at home on the weekends. So, Blessings arranges to have

on Friday evening. Then the kids bring the empty

for the next coming Friday. $100 feeds a child in the program for an entire school year. Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with staples that require little to no preparation. They return with their backpacks on Monday ready to learn.

The Rotary Club of Mission Mid-day began supporting Blessings in a Backpack in September of 2014 and is now sending eighteen Mission students

With the generous support of Rotarians, support for the program continues to grow and we are working with school administrators to identify new students to participate in the program.

Mission Youth House is a collaborative initiative to provide a place for youth to shower, do laundry, access youth focussed medical care, connect with other services and receive help from caring adults. The Rotary Club of Mission Mid-day has pledged its support to provide funds and resources to establish a fully equipped medical examination room at M.Y. House though local fundraising matched by grants from Rotary International. Rotarian John Retallick has stepped up as the project manager and is volunteering his services to oversee its completion with the help of a number of other volunteers.
