Bringing China Home (until 20 Nov) This exhibition explores Hawke’s Bay’s engagement with China through travel, trade, collecting, & conflict. It features photographs, diaries, letters, art & objects from China (& about China) from the HBMT collection & tells a vivid story of the province’s engagement with that country & its people – part of the broader story of Western interest in China. MTG Hawkes Bay, 1 Tennyson St, Napier 10.00am – 5.00pm $10.00 per adult, $7.50 per senior / student, free under 15yrs

South of Here: Matt Palmer (until 14 Dec) Matt Palmer’s images avoid idealised notions of scenic beauty & pristine wilderness. South of Here is a deliberate conversation about the altered landscape. Looking at the objects that are scattered across it like a still life painter surveys the table top. Trying to find beauty in places that feel more abandoned than lived in.

Hastings City Art Gallery, Eastbourne St East, Hastings 10.00am – 4.30pm

Speed-lines and Ziggurats: Deco House Style (until 26 Mar 2017) This series of black & white photographs by Richard Wotton celebrates the Art Deco houses of Hawke’s Bay. Many of the stark walls are decorated by lines that form steps (ziggurats) or stripes (speed-lines) & more, expressing the excitement of the time for trains, skyscrapers & all things modern. Wotton’s photography captures the charm of the houses & encourages a closer look at the familiar buildings around us. MTG Hawkes Bay, 1 Tennyson St, Napier 10.00am – 5.00pm $10.00 per adult, $7.50 per senior / student, free under 15yrs

This is the 1st time that this important body of work will be on public display. The Omarunui series includes 5 photographs that examine glass-plate negatives from the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington & 1 photograph of the Omarunui memorial, which was unveiled by veterans in 1916 to mark the 50th anniversary of the battle & subsequently knocked over in the 1990s in an act of protest. JONO ROTMAN (b. 1974) grew up in Wellington. He divides his time between NZ & the USA.
